everyone in the professional tea gossipers works in a sort of advisor job. iwaizumi is an athletic trainer, akaashi and y/n are both counseling psychologists (basically what you think of when you think of when you think therapist, but the actual name for their job is counseling psychologist as opposed to a clinical psychologist), and kita is a case/social worker for a nearby high school

y/n made kita's twitter, including his bio which was lowkey a joke but he looked at it and took it seriously, thinking to himself "yeah. that's a good reminder." so he never changed it

iwaizumi loves his gc okay <3 and he felt a little bad for knocking over and killing sawtooth blade l and as an apology he paid for sawtooth blade ll </3

the best way i can describe iwaizumi and his personality is that he's like omi in this fic if he was capable of expressing his emotions in a healthy way. "healthy way" in question being iwa's tactic of sending passive aggressive texts towards his friends who are already used to it and know most of the time his jabs are light hearted (for them. for iwa, it's his way of getting his anger out a little at a time. sometimes he means it when he says "idgaf" but they don't know that) rather than just shoving it all down like omi is <3

y/n has a ton of plants in her office! she prizes herself on having a very cozy place with lots of greenery. she likes to claim that having so much life in a room helps boost her clients' moods. akaashi says it doesn't work that way but what does he know

akaashi and y/n both are independent psychologists, their work is a private practice instead of being under a company, and they work in different offices/buildings but the entire gc is rooming together in one apartment

y/n was close friends with omi up until around their first year in high school where she also got a little close to atsumu. but then she drifted from omi and didn't see or talk to atsumu either as a result

she thinks her and omi got distance because she was going through a lot during high school and he just didn't want to be around that

Now, about Haikyuu ships, do you mind if I ask the same as that anon. Also the same format (strength, weakness and dynamic) for Iwaoi, Bokuaka and Ushiten?

For me, my otp (no 1) is Kagehina ; no 2 are Iwaoi & Kuroken (yes, I can't decide and love both ships dearly) ; no 3 is Bokuaka ; no 4 are Lev/Yaku & Ushiten and no 5 is takeda/younger Ukai.

Iwaoi will always be my #1 but I love so many haikyuu ships! your choices are really good and some are a bit unusual - how many people would put takeda/ukai in their top 5?

onto the analysis!

Iwaoi

oikawa's greatest weakness is his inferiority complex. it pushes him beyond his limits (NOT IN A GOOD WAY) and has probably caused iwa an undue amount of stress. he's probably got grey hair.

his greatest strength is his determination - he works hard and he matches his ambition and pride, which I like a lot. he lives up to everything he says he is, and he is able to match with the greatest volleyball players - who, despite their hard work, are undeniably at an advantage because of skill.

we don't often see moments of weakness from iwaizumi. if you were going to pick anything it would probably be stubbornness? while we don't see this trip him up, we can imagine how it might have gotten in his way. equally, his weakness might be that we don't see weakness. the only moment we get is his tears at the end of aoba johsai v karasuno, where he's upset that he wasn't dependable enough and couldn't get it for his team. perhaps it's his strength and care that cause him the most problems.

iwaizumi's strength is, like, everything. (kidding!). we see he is reliable, caring, and unafraid to call out on people's bullshit (especially oikawa's). everyone looks up to him. in terms of iwaoi, it's his reliability that makes him the best person for oikawa.

so we see!! we have quite a volatile, mood-swingy, unnerving character in Oikawa, and a solid, grounding presence in iwaizumi. ~can I make it anymore obvious~~?? iwaizumi encourages, grounds, supports, and - best of all - vouches for oikawa. would we like oikawa as much if we didn't see him with iwa? meanwhile, oikawa adds levity to iwaizumi and encourages him to work harder, go further, and - not to steal kghn's thing - fly higher!!! I do not think iwaizumi has any amaaazzziiing talent as a spiker. it's mainly that he's very strong (arm wrestling champion) and that he works with oikawa. also, they're both total weirdos, volleyball nerds, and sci-fi enjoyers. i love them a lot. (SEND ME MORE IWAOI ASKS I HAVE LOTS TO SAY)

bokuaka

Bokuto's greatest weakness is, obviously, his mood swings. it's very easy for him to give up when things don't go right. equally, his greatest strength is his quick recovery from these, his willingness to try again, and his thirst to do more.

akaashi's greatest weakness is he's tootally stressy and anxious. as we see during his breakdown, he puts a lot of pressure on himself - especially when trying to support bokuto's growth as a player - and this can have some pretty strong effects on him.

akaashi's greatest strength has to be his blunt personality. (not when playing volleyball, but in life in general). he says what he means and doesn't back down; he just owns it. it's a really admirable trait to have.

these guys are sooooo freak4freak. bokuto is loud, silly, emotional, friendly, and totally odd. akaashi is quiet, calm, composed, blunt, and totally odd. they bring out the best parts of each other and encourage each other to become better, as both people and players. to akaashi, bokuto is a star player. to bokuto, akaashi is the best setter in the world. it's canon to me that bokuto would still get akaashi to set to him during MSBY days whenever he needed some regulation.

ushiten (my beloveds)

ushijima's greatest weakness is the fact he doesn't understand people. it's difficult for him to be a true team player OR to combat other, opposing players because he doesn't understand their thought processes properly. this leaks into real life, where he doesn't seem to have many friends - though plenty of shiratorizawa people like him!

ushijima's greatest strength is blunt honesty. like akaashi, he just says what he means - unlike akaashi, he doesn't use this to (affectionately) bully people. he's genuinely a nice person who will praise when it's earned and correct when it's necessary. he does his best to make friends and i love him for that :')

tendou's greatest weakness ... he's generally perceived as a bit creepy by most people, which causes rifts between him and other players/friends/opponents AND forms a tragic backstory for him. while he appears to have overcome this hurdle, it still trips him occasionally. (I talk about why his strangeness is a good thing here).

tendou's great strength is his supportive nature. he's genuinely there to help people. he vouches for hinata at the training camp, he constantly comforts goshiki, he fucks around with semi and makes everyone relax & feel normal again. he's genuinely a kind person.

THESEEEE GUYSSS MAKE ME FERALLLLL they're so silly!! Ushijima doesn't understand people, tendou understands them too well. ushijima is blunt & honest, tendou communicates solely in jokes/sarcasm. tendou plays for the funsies, ushijima cannot imagine doing anything else but volleyball. they are both excluded, 'weird', unwanted, and they're BEST FRIENDS!!! now i want to read some funny ushiten. any recs?

and finally, yes, it's totally ridiculous to get upset over anyone shipping something you don't. I don't even block unless the ship is unethical OR makes 0 sense within the context of the media. Or just unethical. while everyone should curate their own internet experience & blocking keeps us from starting arguments, why lose a genuine friendship over it?

I'm not upset you ship yuki/kyo. I don't ship them but I know why you do. it doesn't hurt me - you do you!

Update on "Mahotsukai Pretty Cure! 2"/the adult MahoPre sequel

It has been over a year since Toei announced they were planning an adult sequel to Mahoutsukai Pretty Cure!, the 13th PreCure season that aired from 2016-2017, yet no real information on it has been released since. All we know is that it will air "in 2024" on the late-night ANiMAZiNG!!! program block.

Despite this, two recent bits of indirect information seem to paint a specific timeframe of when the anime will actually air.

To start off, we now know the full 2024 schedule for ANiMAZiNG!!!, with the Summer program recently announced:

The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids — Jan 7 - Mar 24 (Winter 2024)

Tonari no Yokai-san — Apr 7 - TBA (Spring 2024)

Iwa-Kakeru! Climbing Girls — Jul 6 - TBA (Summer 2024) (Rerun, originally aired Fall 2020)

The Healer Who was Banished From His Party is Actually the Strongest — Starts Oct (Fall 2024)

This means that MahoPre2 will not be airing this year, which makes it odd that it still has a tentative 2024 release date, right? Not exactly.

According to Toei Animation's recent financial report, for the fiscal year ending on March 2024, they still list MahoPre2 as in production for "2024." More specifically, they list it as coming out at some point after the second quarter of the 2024 fiscal year.

In Japan, for government bureaucracies and corporations, a fiscal year lasts from April to March of the following year. For example, the 2023 fiscal year just ended this past March, hence the recent financial report. The 2024 financial year will last from April 2024 to March 2025.

The second quarter of FY2024 ends in September of this year, meaning MahoPre2 will air at some point from October onwards. (Note that Dragon Ball DAIMA, another animated project under Toei, is also listed in the same category, and was announced with a set release date of Fall 2024.)

Given that we know the entire ANiMAZiNG!!! schedule for this year has been filled, it seems very likely that MahoPre2 will air starting in January 2025; that is, the Winter 2025 season. If it airs for just 12-13 episodes like OtonaPre did, that would still put it within the range of FY2024, ending just at the March 2025 deadline.

What seems likely then is that, if it's to be believed that the MahoPre girls will appear in the upcoming WonPre film coming this September, it will act as a bit of promotion for the upcoming MahoPre2 sequel coming out early next year. It makes sense as to why Toei has been quiet on the anime, as the main promotion cycle isn't meant to start until sometime this Summer.

Thoughts On: Iwakakeru! Sport Climbing Girls

Let’s not speak of this again || Awful || Bad || Okay || Entertaining || Good || Better than Expected || Really Good || Amazeballs || What is this vision of glory I’ve witnessed?!

There are very few sports anime with female characters out there, and of the ones that do have female characters, there’s so much fanservice that it’s almost impossible to watch.  Sports anime surrounding female characters also tend to be sports anime in every aspect except the fact that the sport doesn’t actually exist (AoKana or Girls and Panzer).  Some sports anime with female characters have a fair bit of both (Keijo!!!).

Iwakakeru, thankfully, does take after a real sport and has little overt fanservice compared to most, which meant that I enjoyed it far more than I initially expected to.

Competitive bouldering is a thing that I’ve been exposed to before due to a student I had, and it’s definitely a very interesting sport!  This is half of the battle with making a good sports anime.  If the sport is boring or there’s no way to accurately represent the sport so it’s both interesting and understandable to the lay-person, then that anime typically has very little success.  It also happens that an anime has to rely on inputting a lot of drama into the narrative, making the sport take second stage--and at that point it’s not really a “sports” anime.  The best sports anime have a good mix of narrative and sport, with the sport and love of the sport being the primary drive of the narrative while some focus on the narrative and the sport is there for dramatic affect (i.e. the difference between Haikyu!! and 2.43: Seiin High School Volleyball Club). 

Iwakakeru does a decent job of demystifying the sport of competitive bouldering, and while there’s a fair amount of drama, all of the dramatics center around competition.  It’s definitely very sport-forward, which is something that allows it to exist aside other true sports anime.

However, while the series is enjoyable, it lacks a bit of depth, and the balance between characterization and sport is a bit off.  Yes, there’s the typical genius newbie, the one who works harder than anyone, the encouraging and amazing senpai, and a wealth of eccentric competitors.  This is pretty standard in sports anime; however, the best sports anime give depth and dynamic to those tropes and archetypes in a way that Iwakakeru just didn’t.  It’s possible that the series could have, but so much of the series was rushed through that the characters often took a backseat to the action.  This isn’t abnormal for sports anime, especially those who only get a cour or two, but it’s a shame because it could have made Iwakakeru even better if it was allowed the time to give more depth to the characters and to the sport itself.

Ultimately, most sports anime with female characters go this way.  Hanebado and Harukana Recieve come to mind immediately.  It makes me wish that sports anime with female characters were given the same treatment by authors and studios as the sports anime with male characters.  But having played sports while female...I can’t say I’m surprised.  One day, however, I hope we get a female-dominated sports epic, but sadly Iwakakeru was not that.

At any rate, if you love sports anime and like seeing female characters represented in sports as something other than the bishojo manager, then check out Iwakakeru.  It has some faults, but it’s entertaining, treats the sport well, and is very minimal on the fanservice.  If you’re not a sports anime fan, then probably skip this one.
