People keep asking me if I am enjoying the process of writing my book. I wish I could give an enthusiastic “yes”, but that’s simply not the truth.
Like so many of us, I’m a bit of a glutton for work. As of late, I’ve been struggling to find a way to balance work with at least a little bit of pleasure. So after an intense week of writing and editing my latest YouTube episode, I was inspired to take a little break from my daily writing schedule this morning.
I bought the latest edition of Tuscan magazine and slowly soaked in the beauty of every page. The sun came out today and playfully danced across each page. I felt content just being in the fantasy of this Tuscan-themed world.
And just like that, I found my joy in “la dolce far niente” or, the sweetness of doing nothing.

…are people actually debating whether the Papas are Italian?
While I don’t think it’s ever canonically established, given that Tobias is a pop cultural italophile and the majority of catholic popes have been Italian, and Ghost’s lore has it parodying and subverting Catholicism, I think it makes sense that they are…?
Besides, I think his accent sounds Italian—more so before Papa Emeritus IV, but even Cardinal Copia sounds very Italian to me.
#wtf are we just making up debates because we are bored?#please don’t mess with this canon#please don’t make the Papas something stupid

My school was small so every foreign language except for English French and Latin (those were mandatory for the school) depended on literally one person. I was never able to take Spanish even though I wanted to because the Spanish teacher left and they didn't get a new one while I was there. The Russian teacher went on maternity leave when I was in 9th(?) grade so there was just no Russian anymore. The Italian teacher was a German italophile who gave everyone a 1 and just watched movies with them
#there was also ancient greek taught by one of the latin teachers but it was at 7 in the morning so no one went#p

RECIPE: Arugula and Toasted Pine Nut Pesto (from Pasta Veloce by Frances Mayes and Susan Wyler)
Makes about 1½ cups (360 ml)
Ingredients
5 ounces (140 g) baby arugula
⅓ cup (80 ml) extra-virgin olive oil
½ cup (70 g) pine nuts
2 cloves garlic, crushed through a press
½ teaspoon crushed hot red pepper
½ cup (50 g) grated pecorino Romano
⅔ cup (160 ml) pasta water, or more if needed
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
Put the arugula in a blender or food processor. In a small heavy saucepan, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the nuts, reduce the heat to low, and toast until they are very light brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Pour the nuts and hot oil over the arugula.
Add the garlic and hot pepper. Pulse to a coarse puree. Mix in the cheese. Add the pasta water and puree to a saucy consistency. Season with salt and black pepper.
From the famed author of Under the Tuscan Sun, the most delicious Tuscan pasta recipes that can be made in the time it takes to boil water and for the pasta to cook
Frances Mayes is known for transporting readers to the charming Italian countryside in her bestselling books. In Pasta Veloce, Mayes brings that irresistible Italian flavor right to your home with 100 of her favorite pasta recipes. These well-loved recipes blend traditional Italian technique with magic from the Mayes and Wyler home kitchens where experiments are always in progress.
Pasta is the most versatile food on Earth. And if you do it right: fast! Pasta Veloce offers a multitude of under-30-minute, luscious recipes, all accompanied by Mayes’s evocative text. While there are numerous pasta cookbooks, few feature a true Italophile’s passion and eye for detail that can get a dish to the table in, as Mayes describes, “the time it takes to boil water.” From a Tagliatelle with Duck Confit, Chestnuts, and Coffee Reduction to a glittering Capellini with Golden Caviar to the perfect vodka sauce, Pasta Veloce is your guide on those nights when you’re ready to skip the whole production of it but still want to eat like royalty in a rustic Italian village.

Grecophile, italophile, indophile… how about a lover of everything?
Whatever small part of the ancient Greek thought I’ve exposed myself to endlessly inspires me and deeply haunts me, after whatever little I’ve read from the ancient texts of this very ancient land in which I’m born. Their originality not only in thought but also in all the arts, the excellence they achieved is awe-inspiring to witness even centuries apart, even to this day. I’ve finally arrived…

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (2024)
"Godzilla curls up to sleep in the Roman Colliseum like a cat bed. Which is cute but whilst doing so he has destroyed centuries of artwork and architecture and basically totalled my favorite city. It made me pissed at Godzilla. That's just my Italophile pretensions. But where was my rage when he destroyed Hong Kong or some nameless coastal Japanese city? I apologize for not speaking out against him then." -Sonny Gazelle

“FIVE INTERESTING NONFICTION BOOKS ON ITALY”
An Italian Education - Tim Parks
"Tim Parks’s best seller, Italian Neighbors, offered a sparkling, witty, and acutely observed account of an expatriate’s life in a small village outside of Verona. Now in An Italian Education, Parks continues his chronicle of adapting to Italian society and culture, while raising his Italian-born children. With the exquisite eye for detail, character, and intrigue that has brought him acclaim as a novelist, Parks creates an enchanting portrait of Italian parenthood and family life at home, in the classroom, and at church. Shifting from hilarity to despair in the time it takes to sing a lullaby, Parks learns that to be a true Italian, one must live by the motto “All days are one.”" (bookscrolling.com )
2. The city of falling angels -John Berendt
"Twelve years ago, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil exploded into a monumental success, residing a record-breaking four years on the New York Times bestseller list (longer than any work of fiction or nonfiction had before) and turning John Berendt into a household name. The City of Falling Angels is Berendt’s first book since Midnight, and it immediately reminds one what all the fuss was about. Turning to the magic, mystery, and decadence of Venice, Berendt gradually reveals the truth behind a sensational fire that in 1996 destroyed the historic Fenice opera house. Encountering a rich cast of characters, Berendt tells a tale full of atmosphere and surprise as the stories build, one after the other, ultimately coming together to portray a world as finely drawn as a still-life painting." (bookscrolling.com)
3. An Enchanted April- Elizabeth con Arnim
four proper English ladies who leave rainy England to go on holiday to Italy. Although these women have never met each other, they all respond to the same advertisement for a small medieval castle in Portofino. (amazon.com)
4. Pasta, Pane, Vino -Matt Goulding
This travelogue takes readers on a food lover’s tour of Italy, beginning in Rome and ending in Lake Como. Goulding brings the country to life, mainly focusing on the diversity of Italian food in different regions. However, it’s important to note that Pasta, Pane, Vino isn’t a cookbook!
Instead, you’ll learn about the history of Italian cuisine and the people shaping it today. You’ll also find 200 photographs inside this book which help illustrate Goulding’s stories.
5. The Italians-John Hooper
ohn Hooper’s entertaining and perceptive new book is the ideal companion for anyone seeking to understand contemporary Italy and the unique character of the Italians. Fifteen years as a foreign correspondent based in Rome have sharpened Hooper’s observations, and he looks at the facts that lie behind the stereotypes, shedding new light on everything from the Italians’ bewildering politics to their love of life and beauty. Hooper persuasively demonstrates the impact of geography, history, and tradition on many aspects of Italian life, including football and Freemasonry, sex, food, and opera. Brimming with the kind of fascinating—and often hilarious—insights unavailable in guidebooks, The Italians will surprise even the most die-hard Italophile.
