The Kusanagi and Munakata dynamic is so fun to me because nothing they ever say to each other is sincere and they are so similar and yet unalike. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about their dynamic! Love your analysis of all the characters

I absolutely love their dynamic, they hate each other so hard and express it through constantly being passive aggressive to each other, it’s beautiful. They both do have a lot in common all things considered, they’re both basically the ‘brains’ of their respective clans and fairly sharp in general, and both probably more aware than anyone about what Mikoto is headed towards. However they obviously have different feelings regarding Mikoto and how to handle him, Munakata doesn’t care for Kusanagi’s way of allowing Mikoto to do as he likes while Kusanagi presumably would rather Munakata keep out of things entirely. They’re also both pretty aware of Fushimi’s skills and abilities too, while Fushimi was clearly an outsider in Homra Kusanagi had plans for Fushimi to be his successor, and wasn’t pleased when Munakata saw that they had this kid with so much potential and just snatched him away. I really like how their dynamic goes in general, like how Munakata has no problem being openly scornful to Mikoto but when he’s dealing with Kusanagi he always puts on a veneer of politeness and Kusanagi generally responds in kind, like they both absolutely know what they’re dealing with regarding the other but still choose to fake politeness rather than being openly rude. And in a way that’s almost worse than how Munakata deals with Mikoto, like rather than just straightforwardly throwing punches at each other they’re being quietly catty and it’s glorious.

At the same time these two are I think in the most interesting place post-series and there’s a lot of parallels there too. As I said above, Munakata and Kusanagi are two of the most aware regarding Mikoto’s state and eventual fate, they’re both inextricably wrapped up in how it happens, both are affected by it, and both have to continue to move forward regardless. Especially when we get to the post-ROK era where Munakata isn’t a King anymore and has had to deal with the same issues Mikoto did regarding his Sword becoming unstable but in his case he survived, and now he and Kusanagi have kind of a weird bond even if they still don’t really like each other. I like the idea that this is sorta something they can commiserate on post-ROK — their respective relationships with Mikoto are different than the way the other members of the clan had a relationship with him, even for Anna, and in that way the two of them can understand a certain part of each other that others really can’t. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they like each other any more than they did before, but at least they have an understanding about it.
