your yearly reminder that Baby It’s Cold Outside is a song about a woman having CONSENSUAL sex, at a time when premarital sex was frowned upon. The female singer is offering up the token demurrals society expects her to, because it’s expected, not bc she doesn’t fully intend to stay and have awesome sex with a dude she’s into. The male singer knows this, and is in turn offering her an excuse to give to the neighbors in the morning (“it was too cold for me to go home, the only responsible thing to do was spend the night at his place. because of the weather, get your minds out of the gutter”). A 1950s audience would have understood all this, but the nuance gets lost in a modern age where women are actually allowed to say yes when they mean it.
Also the “hey what’s in this drink” thing was a common joke at the time, where the punchline was that there was in fact nothing in the drink. the woman’s making a joke that she wouldn’t do this if she was sober, oh goodness no! it’s only a joke bc both she and the man are in on the punchline: she is sober, and is only staying bc she wants to

what i love about neve is the fact that while she can hold together the whole "semi stoic and kinda suave" persona when you flirt with her, this woman is probably and genuinely just internally screaming every single time Rook says anything remotely sweet or romantic to her.
Like she is biting her knuckles and beating her head against her desk the second they leave the room.
I love her ✨️

The problem w writing fiction is that you'll be like tee-hee I'm going to write a story about a fucked up little scenario that's got nothing to do with anything in real life, just some pure messed up nonsense, and then you finish it and take a step back and go aw rats I made a metaphor again

Rook: *intense thinking*
Neve: What are you doing?
Rook: Trying to get the Lighthouse to manifest you a better bed
Neve: I don't think that's how it works
Rook: *still intensely thinking*
Neve: ...can you ask for it to be a queen-size?

It just sort of hit me that one of the reasons I like Neve so much? Is because she is a woman whose vibe is pretty unmistakably camp.
There are a million reasons fandom doesnt care about women characters as much as their men counterparts.
But one subtle way that I think gets overlooked, is that a lot of male characters are allowed to be sort of larger than life in this specific campy kind of way. They can look and act and dress a little... ridiculous. They can sashay around a space and own it. Give long monologues and steal the show with their personality and general vibe. Even if it's not how most people act irl, we accept it so often in fiction. And in queer parts of fandom, we appreciate it even more for the gendered performance of it all; how it draws our attention to the connection between character and identity and performance.
Meanwhile, women rarely get written like that. With the exception of certain kinds of villains.
But Neve is a good guy. Morally gray at the absolute outside. And she's kinda campy! She has a very particular way of speaking, she swishes and swaggers when she moves. She wears ostentatious and totally unnecessary hats and veils and big giant lapels, with ornate jackets and a super intricate (absolutely unnecessarily) leg prosthetic.
Oh, right, and every single outfit/piece of clothing is perfectly color coded in the exact same shade of bright, neon teal.
She's camp as hell!!
And I for one, love her for it

My Rook. AFAB/non-binary. Main is a Crow mage. Down bad for Neve Gallus.
I’m writing for the first time in, like, 15 years. I’ll post the link - as well as the art I’m working on for Veilguard - soon. As usual, Dragon Age has been a little light in the darkness. DA2 helped me come out the closet, so it’s safe to say I turn to this franchise when things feel bananas.
