I see a lot of discourse in writer spaces about 'discipline'.

I mean, yes, obviously you need to be 'disciplined' insofar as you have to actually write the project if you want it to be finished. Sometimes that involves a level of 'forcing it'.

(Not finishing projects, by the by, is not some great sin. I've got plenty of half-finished scenes and stories and novels on my Google Drive)

But a lot of writers who love to talk online about 'discipline' don't mean it that way. They talk about these rigorous routines they have where they write 10,000 words a day and spend six hours per day on their projects and, what, you don't do that? You don't have time? You don't want to write every single day?

No, no. You can't just write when the inspiration strikes. That means you're not disciplined enough.

In my opinion, this is just another example of how something works for one person (or subset of people), and so they generalise it as The Way To Be Productive (Or Else).

Not only does this leave behind people who just work differently, but also those with inconsistent schedules, unpredictable life responsibilities, disabled people like me- hell, even just hobby writers who can't or won't make that commitment.

You're not doing something wrong if you don't have an elaborate writing routine and strict schedule. Even if you do have a routine, it's okay to break it.

(Obviously you don't need my permission, and that's the beauty of the thing: go forth and write, writer! Or don't. Or go and get a snack. Drink some water. Focus on yourself today instead. I'm not gonna know)

I just think we all need to stop projecting what works for us onto everyone. Share it, yes. Bring things that might work for others to their attention. But let's stop acting like there's one way to write, because frankly that's plain absurd.

i just realised that i've finished my vials of tears of the bazaar grind, which means i can rejig my railway board from being a machine that prints airag into something more true to briar.

but... i've kinda come to enjoy having the widow on the board??? it would feel wrong if she wasn't there. maybe she was a mentor figure to the apologist when he was a player in the underworld of london, and he still feels a measure of attachment to her despite their now vastly differing positions and outlooks.

Fearless Liabilities by @femme--de--lettres: a wolfstar summer camp AU. I admittedly have not yet finished this one, but I have read enough to comfortably rec it. andies writing never fails to make me laugh-- like audibly out loud. multiple times. i don't know anyone who is better at illustrating absolute shenanigans as well as andie can and this story is SO FREAKIN' CUTE. it has romance. it has camp. it has complicated families and friendships and. yah.

Only Fools are Satisfied by grumposaur (aka tumblr user @pancakehouse). AGAIN. I admittedly haven't finished this yet, but i'm going to rec it because sports AU girlies rise up and-- YES. this is a wolfstar tennis AU. Do i know anything about tennis? No. Am I hooked? yes. I am in love with sirius as we all should be, and it is so fun. (also, i can't explain it, but tumblr user pancakehouse, there is something...so like...nonchalant and casual about the way you write? effortless, every sentence and i'm enjoying every bit of it).

Just what the doctor ordered by wrappedup: i feel like everyone and their dog recs this one (pun intended) but rightfully so. beware tall remus, but the banter and pacing in this is so good.

Hard to Find by accioromulus. this one is short, easy breezy read. the dialogue is so fun and quick and its just...simple and cute. Muggle Roadtrip AU.

Well they’ve had a decent if embarrassing kind of practice today, hopefully we’ll see some progress for quali in a couple hours
