venus in aries
ex: lily james, rihanna, marilyn monroe, lady gaga, tyler the creator, mariah carey, audrey hepburn, rdj, freud, gigi hadid, chris martin, melanie martinez
they are driven to impress others, show them new things and new experiences. they need to excel in their chosen field and feel in charge, directing the action. however, in relationships, they’re also attracted to strong-willed people - which often leads to conflicts. if they like you, they’re very direct and spontaneous. their greatest charm is their straightforwardness in social interactions, often combined with daring humor. if things go badly, however, their mood can change to combatively defensive and oversensitive. they’re not known for subtlety, and often like violent sports. fighting is natural for them, and they admire others who fight for causes. they highly value independence and always want to be number one, no matter what. they are not very patient and are terrified of boredom.
express affection directly, impulsively, enthusiastically; in love with the honeymoon phase of relationships.
assertive and demanding, which can add difficulty to intimacy.
values independence above all, in self and others
aries venus can be fiercely proud of their romantic attachments and loved ones. they can be very emotional, but rarely would you describe them as deeply feeling. they’re not very romantically sentimental or sympathetic; they prefer to be direct and blunt. the men are self-centered and not very giving; the women aren’t very patient or stereotypically feminine. the women don’t like overly gentle or patient men, preferring them to be aggressive and “compete” with her; they’re a true contradiction and quite complex. both like “quickies” and can be almost insatiable sexually, although quite selfish.
they can be selfish in relationships since they push their own ideas about how it should go, instead of talking about it with their partner. relationships start with a BOOM but fizzle easily since aries is not known for its longevity. they’re always looking for excitement, daily. they like to be enthusiastic and positive and let no one walk over them, even if they’re not overly assertive.
venus in leo
ex: fiona apple, madonna, mj, nicole kidman, tom cruise, amy winehouse, jlaw, whitney houston, niall horan, jason momoa, dua lipa, asap rocky, hitchcock
these people do nothing halfway. when committed, they can show remarkable loyalty. the problem is that they can go to such extremes of misplaced and impractical loyalty, that it outdoes common sense of objectivity. their reactions, while warmhearted, are well calculated and not at all spontaneous. as Grant Lewi points out, “No one with Venus in Leo has ever been talked into anything”. they want to make sure the right effect and use their affections to get what they want.
they possess sharply contrasting qualities: sincerity and generosity combined with a superior attitude towards others, and showing jealousy over others’ success. they have a huge, vulnerable ego and the merest “slight” is taken as a major offense: try leaving them on read too often or not showing up to their party. they’re very proud of their relationships and need to feel respected and admired by all. their greatest gift is probably their ability to vitalize others through their faith in them, conveying a warmth of encouragement to anyone who needs it.
express affection warmly, dramatically, playfully, and enthusiastically.
the need to be the center of attention or dominant force of a partner's life can encumber deeper intimacy.
can be extremely generous and loyal.
leo venus is rather in love with dramatic love. they crave grandeur and excitement, often staging affectionate displays or romantic situations. they have tremendous pride over their relationship and their own wonderful generous qualities (yes; they know how good they can be). although they’re easily offended by real or imagined insults, they’re quite insensitive to others’ feelings unless it’s related to the leo venus, somehow. a constant need for praise is their most tiresome feature, and they have an enormous weakness for flattery, one way they can be emotionally manipulated. at worst, they’re so self-centered they can’t relate on a simple, sincere human level and use others for self-aggrandizement. and if so, they can end up lonely, petty, and indignant.
they want to do a lot for their beloved, and make sure they enjoy every moment spent with the leo venus, and certainly don’t mind if other people notice their magnificent generosity. their own sense of identity is sometimes so tied up with their primary relationship, that they often go into crisis if things end, badly or not. they like physical demonstrations of affections, but are not very receptive on a true feeling level. they stimulate these displays of “love” in you, especially if in need of affection, but they can also drop you like a stone if they find someone who can praise them better and you’re not delivering.
their responses to love and affection are lavish, open-hearted and almost childish. the urge to spread sunshine throughout their partner’s life is genuine. flattery will get you everywhere with them, but make sure to keep this up if you intend to maintain a relationship. they can also be very sexual and give as good as they take.
venus in sagittarius
ex: joan baez, david bowie, nicki minaj, billie eilish, kendall jenner, jake gyllenhaal, jimi hendrix, jane fonda, mac miller
their reactions to life are rather happy-go-lucky and philosophical, explaining how resilient they are when confronted by the cruelty of life. some call it shallowness or avoidance of true feelings. take your pick, but it’s hard to stay mad when they disappoint. they’re often fickle and hard to please, but that’s due their chronic lack of satisfaction. they have a hard time dealing with routine, tedious reality, and facing the practical limits of life. they don’t enjoy living in the moment.
for them, there’s always room for improvement, and their philosophy of life is optimistic, always thinking a better reality exists just over the hill. they love surprises and you can expect anything from them. a need for space and freedom is essential for them: both mentally (learning, discussion, debate) and physically (activities, sports, traveling). they are also brutally honest about others’ hypocrisy or negligence, although they react to their own truth with a shrug because of their inflated self-image.
expresses affection freely, enthusiastically, generously and idealistically. motivated by an inner trust and faith in love.
tolerant and open-minded attitude toward love with a need for alignment of ideas; values honesty but may be insensitive to feelings.
sag venus wants to be hard, or at least noticed, in any social situation. and in a close relationship, the sharing of ideas and philosophical harmony is necessary for it to last. but for it to last even one evening, there has to be a common sense of humor or type of entertainment, since they can’t stand boredom and are naturally humorous people. they like exploring their relationship and often ask their partner some probing questions and enjoy teasing statements. honesty is, again, valued above all else, but they can be extremely insensitive and dismissive of others’ feelings and needs because of it. their casual remarks do real damage and reveal an irresponsible, and self-centered attitude towards love and sex.
they’re tremendously enthusiastic and unprejudiced about love and sex, and their sexuality is often not straight. they’re fun, but you can never flatter or praise them. you’ve got to earn their respect and usually glow with self-confidence to intrigue them. this venus placement is found in many who are impulsive and generous with affections; they are demonstrative, but also rather impersonal in their relationship approach, although quite charming. being a fun “pal” comes easier than being a truly intense lover; and the fact they grant their partner vast amounts of freedom reveals they like to maintain a level of personal distance, without restraint or heavy expectations.
these people see no reason why emotions shouldn’t be followed, and usually discount the importance of material things if their partner can’t offer them (unless there’s heavy Taurus on the chart).

hey friends ! it’s ya girl gigi , i prefer she/her pronouns , i’m from the gmt-2 tmz , which tbh , i don’t rly know what it means , and i’m twenty years old , coming out of my hole to introduce u to martina . she’s real dumb but so am i so i feel like we connect over that u know ? anyways , under the cut u will find some more info about her , n if u wanna plot pls smash that like button so i can scream @ u about how high school musical 3 rly was that bitch . yes , thats why it took me so long to get this posted . i have no shame about it .
ariana grande . cisfemale . she&her . / martina bianco just pulled up blasting 929 by halsey — that song is so them ! you know , for a twenty five year old singer , i’ve heard they’re really impetuous , but that they make up for it by being so sociable . if i had to choose three things to describe them , i’d probably say old band t-shirts , high ponytail & dirty sneakers . here’s to hoping they don’t cause too much trouble !
𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐒 :
𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 : martina bianco . 𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 : martie exclusively . please call her martie she will not answer if u call her anything else or maybe she’ll just cry abt it . 𝐚𝐠𝐞 : twenty five . 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 : singer / songwriter . 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 : closeted bisexual / biromantic . 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 : newark , nj . 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 : los angeles , ca / new york city , ny . 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 : ariana grande . 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐬 : sociable , sincere , clueless , impulsive , unbothered , insecure , funloving , creative , unsure , adventurous .
𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 :
martie is the only daughter out of five kids , and she was born to a traditionally italian family , from both her parents’ sides . they weren’t rich but lived comfortably , and had a really big family in general . holidays and birthdays were always huge in her family , and there was usually a funny argument that ended with the grandmas spraying everyone with a water hose . her parents weren’t very happy together , but tried their best to work through their problems and not divorce , since they were very much christians and didn’t really believe in separation . they did eventually divorce though , but only pretty later on in martie’s life .
considering she only had brothers and her mother worked long hours , martie didn’t have a lot of female influences in her life , so she grew up pretty unconcerned about more feminine matters , not because she disliked it but she was just clueless to it . when she grew older , she got a lot more into makeup , but fashion still isn’t her thing . nowadays , she has a personal stylist , but when she dresses herself , martie usually ends up in dirty sneakers and ripped t-shirts .
so , growing up , considering martie wasnt too interested in most of her brothers hobbies , she had to find herself something to do . she tried a great many deal of things , and ended up discovering she loved music , writing song lyrics , playing musical instruments , and singing . considering she was pretty good at it , her parents supported her wishes and paid for singing lessons & bought her a bunch of instruments and all of that .
[ HOMOPHOBIA / BIPHOBIA TW ] so she was pretty happy and chill for her late childhood & early teens , contrary to some of her brothers , martie didnt get in trouble with teachers and was a reasonably good student , so they never worried about her while she was growing up . that pretty much all changed when martie not only came out as bisexual to her family but also told them she was actually in a relationship a girl . her family was very religious so it didn’t surprise her when her mother cried for days & was clearly disappointed , but her dad raged and screamed and threatened her with all kinds of punishments if she didn’t end her relationship and never talked about her sexuality again instead , and his behaviour made her feel so scared that she did end up breaking up with her first girlfriend and didn’t touch the subject of her sexuality for many many years after that . [ END OF TW ]
it caused a huge shift in her family dynamics , unsurprisingly . martie felt like she didnt have a choice but to hide , and she really resented her father for forcing that on her & the rest of the family for giving her almost no support . her brothers tried their best , but it was really hard for all of them to stand up to their father . so she focused a lot on her music , because by then she was sure that it was her way out of that environment that was hurting her so much .
she was picked up by a label when she was 19 , and left her home in newark as soon as she could . choosing to stay with new friends and acquaintances as she worked her way into the music industry . after being featured in a few other artist’s songs & having a first single to become a smash hit ( side to side ) , martie released dangerous woman , her first album that climbed steadily up the charts until she was basically everywhere . it was a very sudden change of environment but she was very happy about it , at least she wasnt stuck around her dad anymore .
however , she is still just as stuck as she was back in her hometown , since once she blew up , her label & management thought it would also be a good idea to hide her sexuality , at least until she was more ‘established’ in the industry . newsflash , its been five years and they still wont let her come out about it . she’s definitely growing impatient , though , so that’s not something that’s gonna be a secret for too long probably . still , there’s not a lot of ppl who know abt her sexuality out there so far .
so , in the five years she’s been famous , martie kept in contact with a few family members , but definitely not her dad . her parents divorced a couple of years after she left , and her mom decided to make more of an effort to be around her & get over her prejudice to support martie’s choices , which helped heal their relationship in ways martie didnt really expect .
considering the career she has now , martie has managed to keep a relatively unproblematic image on the media . she’s had her controversial moments for sure , and there are definitely reasons for people to dislike her , but mostly she gets away unscathed by fans , the media does have a field trip coming up w untrue headlines about her tho .
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 :
okay so , martie is kinda like a not so big kid still ? she’s never had to actually be by herself her entire life , so adulting is something she has a certain difficulty doing . she’s very unbothered about life in general , so something really worrying that mostly everyone would freak out about will rarely ever bother her . but , she will freak out for three days if she gets asked to pay her own bills or something as mundane .
she also kinda lives in her own little world , and in a way , she can be very confident in the aspect of not really bothering about almost anyone’s opinions about her & her actions , if she wants to do something that will make her happy , she won’t really think about it before doing so , so she’s kinda reckless in that way . but she also doubts herself very much when it comes to self worth & like things related to her actual personality . we love multifaceted muses am i right ? lmao
martie is great to make friends with , she will pretty much get along with everyone ? is a super social being , loves being surrounded by people , probably has a bunch of her friends living with her because she just doesn’t like being alone .
loves working ! spends almost her entire free time in the studio , if u haven’t seen her in three days chances are she’s trying to finish a song . can get a little lost on it though so she definitely needs some looking after when she gets into songwriting mode .
overall a disaster child ? doesn’t know how to function but tries her best & isn’t that all we can ask ?
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 :
a secret relationship with a girl , work collaborators , a pr relationship , exes , the first love from high school maybe ? , roommates , best friends , protective friendships , good influences , bad influences , smth based on ghostin’ by ari , something based on you should be sad by halsey .

Glace Gazette Files: RainbowS
It’s impossible to talk about current music trends without mentioning the hottest new group on the charts: RainbowS. From to humble beginnings to super stardom, these girls are the living definition of dreams coming true.
We had the chance to interview these lovely ladies, and get the inside scoop on how they gained their claim to fame!
~ T. Mars
Please introduce yourselves to the lovely readers at home!
L: I’m Lexi. Lead guitarist.
S: Hi, everyone! I’m Sierra, your keyboardist!
G: I’m Gigi, and I’m the lead singer as well as the leader of the group!
O: Olivia, here! I’m on bass. Sometimes I’ll play lead if Lexi’s not feeling it.
Li: And I’m Lili. I do...drums some days and backup vocals on other.
Now, before we jump into the deep questions, let’s start off with a little fun, shall we?
Li: I’m...terrified already. [Laughs]
It’s real standard stuff, no worries! First of all, let’s get to know you a little better. What can you typically be found doing on your days off?
G: Days off...
S: Gigi never stops working. I feel like she’s at it nonstop.
G: That’s not true! I take breaks sometimes!
O: Suuuper rare when she does.
G: But when I DO, I like reading. Murder mysteries especially.
L: Me and Lili go on drives through the city.
Li: Sometimes we’ll go shopping but Lexi insists on eating first, so we just do these...spur of the moment restaurant tours where we hop from place to place until we’re sick.
O: Movie marathons. All day. Foreign dramas? The absolute best thing after weeks of practice. Give me a remote and a bowl of caramel corn, and i’m GOLDEN.
S: I don’t know how to answer this...! I don’t have a set thing I do other than sleep. And even that’s kinda fishy. Umm...I guess I like drawing and cooking?
G: Sierra never really stops either...
L: It’s a miracle these two are still kicking...
The grind never really stops for you guys, does it?
O: Nope. We’re always going at 1000% percent! We gotta stay on our toes for the fans!
Speaking of the fans, what’s the best fan interaction you’ve experienced so far?
O: Ohhh my god. Can I tell it? Lemme tell it.
L: Nobody’s stoppin’ you.
O: Okay! Okay! So, we were performing at O’Henry Arena and it was actually our first concert/meet and greet and we were super excited to have some hands on time with the fans. There was this one girl-- who looked like she couldn’t be older than 13-- who came up to us with these little bracelets she made herself--
S: At the time, we technically weren’t SUPPOSED to receive gifts, but she was so cute that we couldn’t just turn her down.
O: I wear mine all the time, actually! I could show you right now.
G: We don’t get the chance to do that sort of thing often. We try to do little things like stream or respond to fan letters online but doing things face to face on a more personal level like that is...
Li: Amazing, honestly.
L: It’s special.
G: Special! Yeah, it’s really nice to see how creative our fans are.
Creativity actually leads into my next question! What inspires you all as artists?
L: Food.
G: That’s so straightforward...
S: No good.
L: No good?
S: Mm-mm.
L: I mean, it’s true though. For me, at least. Good food gets me pumped to start working. Like, experiencing stuff through the senses in general...work for me. I’ll be out and I’ll smell something good and it’ll remind me of something and like that [snaps] I got a lyric in mind or a beat in my head.
Li: Lexi comes up with things seemingly out of nowhere. We’ll be out getting wings one moment and she just randomly has a verse about how much she loves chicken wings and she won’t stop repeating it until she gets it down.
L: I could be a freestyle rapper if they’d let me. If they gave me a mic, I-- [laughs] I could totally do it! Let me rap about pizza toppings at our next show.
Li: Next person. Next person!
S: For me, it’s moreso having to do with whenever my Muse strikes me next. I’ll sit at the keyboard and ask my Muse for help and then bam! I got a chord. Bam, I got a melody. It keeps piling on until we got a song we can work with.
G: Outside media is my inspiration. Like stories and things like that. Our first single, Color Core, is actually based on something I wrote when I was younger.
O: It’s still online somewhere.
G: Shh!
O: I invite our fans to find it!
G: It’s not online! It’s not!
O: Good luck on your quest, my friends!
What made you become musicians in the first place?
Li: This is what I wanted to do when I grew up, honestly.
G: Really?
Li: I wanted to be a pop star...only because at the time, I thought they ruled the world because that’s all I saw on TV.
L: That’s...that’s so weird! What are you even talking about?
Li: I was 8!
G: People told me I should be a songwriter and I tried that but nobody likes reading the lyrics without listening to the song so it just. Happened for me.
S: I’ve been doing piano for years now and if I let all my training go to waste, my folks would be beyond mad.
O: Because Gigi asked me to.
G: I never did that!
O: You did ask me if I was interested...and I said yes. Thinking it was a garage band and all. I didn’t know we’d actually be famous. It’s still weird to think that just a few years ago we we’re all just students huddled up in Sierra’s basement making songs...
L: I’m glad it ended up like this.
G: Yeah...I’m happy I get to sing with you guys.
S: Makes ‘ya feel all warm and fuzzy.
I’m afraid that we’re all out of time together...But if you have any closing remarks, feel free to go ahead.
G: Everyone, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for continuing to support us! Without you, RainbowS would be nowhere near as amazing as it is now.
O: Everything we do is for you guys. Everything. Every song, every performance...it’s all for you guys!
S: We’ll continue to work hard in the future. And hopefully...very, veeeery soon, we’ll go on a world tour and thank our fans from around the world.
L: Keep cheering for us, yeah? In return, we’ll give it all we got.
Li: ....You took all the meaningful things.
G: Lili, oh my god.
Li: Aha....thanks for reading!

Back to basics: Offshore sailing by celestial navigation alone
Navigating by sun and star in the electronic age is a big challenge. Andy Schell describes a voyage of discovery
Star sights need a visible horizon, which you only get at dawn and dusk. Photo: 59 North
I have tattoos of a rooster and a pig on my feet. They’re meant to protect me from sinking. I have a nautical star on my forearm, so I can always find my way home. I wear red pants at boat shows and lectures. I have a passion for the traditions of the sea.
Celestial navigation tops them, with its blend of romantic art and practical science. Since I first read Bernard Moitessier’s book The Long Way, long before ever going offshore myself, I’ve wanted to cross an ocean using only sun and stars as my guide.
In the spring of 2017, sailing north from the BVIs to Bermuda with the ARC Europe fleet, we raised the stakes – we’d sail the route on our Swan 48 Isbjörn navigating entirely by celestial means. We wanted to see if we could do it.
Isbjörn carries electronic equipment, but the crew revelled in navigating by the stars. Photo: 59 North
I first learned celestial navigation ten years ago from John Kretschmer at a workshop he hosted at his home in Fort Lauderdale. John is the reason I pursued a career on the ocean. He’s well known to most sailors in America and made history in 1984 when he sailed a Contessa 32 called Gigi from New York to San Francisco the ‘wrong way’ round Cape Horn, an adventure that is immortalised in his book Cape Horn to Starboard. The very day that Gigi rounded the Horn, 25 January 1984, was the day I was born.
During the weekend workshop I got to practise taking morning sun sights on the beach with the old Freiberger sextant that John had used to navigate around the Horn on that famous voyage.
John described celestial navigation in romantic terms, explaining it in a way that made it as inspiring as it was understandable. Here was someone who spoke my language, the language of the great sailing romantics like Moitessier and Sterling Hayden. John made celestial bigger than just navigating for, after all, the likelihood of a modern day sailor actually needing celestial is effectively nil.
Article continues below…
‘Did you sail that thing here?’ – solo across the Atlantic in a Folkboat
It’s a funny thing, the further I sailed away from northern Europe, the more attention my boat attracted in marinas…
Life-changing voyage: Sailing solo across the Atlantic in a 22ft sloop
On a cloudy midsummer afternoon, my best friend, Harry Scott, and I waved goodbye to our worried mothers and sailed…
Time is everything
“Has the boat motion really settled down a lot or am I just feeling better?” Tom, one of our crew, asked on the second morning of the passage north from Tortola.
He and Cheryl had the watch and were at the helm while the crew was gathered in the cockpit for the day’s noon sight. I led the process while eating a bag of corn chips in an effort to stave off the early-passage mal de mer. Thane had the sextant and Mike was note-taker and timekeeper.
“Is it the 8th? What’s today?” asked Cheryl. “It’s the 7th today, isn’t it? Or no, it is the 8th,” I replied, not so confidently.
Isbjörn is a particularly well-travelled S&S Swan 48. Photo: Tim Wright
Normally on an ocean passage the days really don’t matter. Not so when you’re using celestial navigation. A four-second error on the time you took the sight equates to a one-mile mistake in determining the sun’s geographic position. Time is everything.
Isbjörn had departed Tortola with the ARC Europe fleet and we’d initially sailed west down Sir Francis Drake channel, rounding Jost van Dyke to starboard and pointing the bow for Bermuda. The boat galloped north at first, carrying the easterly trades on a rhythmic swell under hazy skies. Our dead-reckoning plot was easy to keep track of as Isbjörn beam-reached up the rhumb line, full sail flying, at eight knots.
At just shy of 1,000 miles, the passage to Bermuda is long enough to find your sea legs, but short enough to forego that 5 o’clock cocktail without regret. The Gosling’s Family Reserve in Bermuda is worth waiting for anyway.
Photo: Isbjörn Sailing
But the Trades faltered sooner than we all wanted them to. Through the winter in the Caribbean, Mia and I had got so accustomed to sailing in 20 knots of breeze with small sails that it felt rather odd when we first sailed into an area off the coast of northern Florida more affected by continental weather than the tradewinds and lost the breeze for the first time in months. A weak cold front passed overhead and suddenly Isbjörn was on port tack.
Secret GPS positions
We had to eliminate the nearly-impossible-to-avoid GPS inputs while still maintaining some semblance of safety. The old Garmin chartplotter’s GPS antenna had given up the ghost, so we didn’t have to worry about that, or the VHF, which was integrated to it.
We had an AIS app on the iPad that allowed us to see targets around us and their CPAs, streamed wirelessly from the built-in Vesper XB8000 transceiver, but that would hide our own position. We had a paper passage chart, bound copies of the Nautical Almanac and the Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation.
Mia would keep a secret GPS record in a separate logbook in case of emergency. Ironically, friends and family following the rally from afar would know our position more accurately than we would through our YB tracker.
Thane had signed up for the passage in spite of the celestial navigation part of it, not because of it. He was an experienced offshore sailor, having sailed across the Atlantic westabout, double-handed with his wife, Brenda, on their Bavaria 37.
“Holy smokes, this is so cool!” he exclaimed the first time he managed to grab an evening twilight star sight.
Getting a reliable sight from the sun is tricky when it’s hazy or overcast. Photo: 59 North
The sun had only just sunk beneath the horizon to port. The western sky was painted an array of pinks, yellows and oranges, while overhead blue faded to black as night approached to starboard. If you looked hard enough, you could just make out the evening’s first stars. We were in that ethereal slice in time photographers call the magic hour and navigators call civil twilight.
Thane had used the ‘no scope, two eyes open’ approach on that first star sight that Moitessier had used on Joshua. ‘I felt that I was becoming an expert in taking star sights since I discovered that it can be done without the telescope, keeping both eyes open,’ Bernard Moitessier wrote in his book Cape Horn: The Logical Route.
‘In this way, a star can be brought down to the horizon because the latter can be seen quite clearly with both eyes open. It is impossible to do this properly while looking through the telescope where the horizon always looks hopelessly blurred. In my innocence, I thought I was the first to discover this method…’
During our one-day crash course in Tortola, I’d described to the crew this method in theory. With one sight that evening, on the rolling deck of a boat at sea where the accuracy of his sight had real-life consequences, Thane had instantly and enthusiastically bridged the gap to celestial in practice, experiencing the same joy of discovery that Moitessier had uncovered and written about some 50 years earlier. ‘Even the best navigators are not quite sure where they’re going until they get there, and then they’re still not sure!’
Sextant sights provide the raw data – you then have to try to work out where you are. Photo: 59 North
Breadcrumbs in the wood
Traditionally, navigation was about keeping a detailed record of where you’d been in order to plot a course to where you’d like to go. Hansel and Gretel knew how to navigate – the breadcrumbs-in-the-forest trick was the fairytale version of dead reckoning.
Navigation was rooted in superstition. Never did a sailor tempt fate by arrogantly declaring they were sailing ‘to’ a faraway port; it was always ‘towards’. This thinking contained equal doses of humility and flexibility that the modern navigator ignores at their peril.
Teaching celestial navigation in a modern context, then, involves filtering fundamental concepts through a particular lens. Take latitude, for example. It’s derived by taking a north-south cross-section of the earth and extending lines from the centre outwards, like spokes on a bicycle wheel.
AIS app on an iPad provides information on other vessels. Photo: 59 North
Where those spokes intersect the surface of the earth creates a given line of latitude, which is drawn on the earth’s surface around the world horizontally. The degrees between lines of latitude on the surface are actually the angle between those bicycle spokes.
Nautical miles on the surface of the earth, then, correspond to those angles. Everyone knows that one minute of latitude is equal to one nautical mile, and that 60 of these make one degree of latitude. But have you ever stopped to think how far a nautical mile is on the moon? Or on Jupiter?
A nautical mile on another planet is still derived in exactly the same way, but it’s the body’s circumference that determines the actual geographic distance of it on the surface of that body. A statute, or land mile, is contrived. A nautical mile is an elegant expression of geometry.
Dive a little deeper. The distance on the surface of the earth from 0° to 231⁄2° North, for example, is 60×23.5 or 1,410 nautical miles. It’s also 1,410 nautical miles from the moon’s equator to 231⁄2° north on the moon, but the distance as measured in feet or metres is much shorter because the moon isn’t nearly as big.
That 23 1⁄2° North, by the way, is the Tropic of Cancer. The Tropic of Capricorn, conversely, lies at 23 1⁄2° South. Those aren’t just made-up boundaries: the geographic tropics are de fined naturally by the limits of the movement north and south of the sun’s declination throughout the year as it traces a sine curve from season to season, due to the tilt of the earth.
The other half of the sun’s geographic position (GP) – longitude, or Greenwich Hour Angle (GHA) in celestial parlance – is directly convertible with time and changes by the second. The sun’s GP travels westabout through 360°, right around the earth, in 24 hours, or 15° per hour.
Logically, then, I can predict the sun’s GHA in my head if I know the time in Greenwich, 1400 UT, for example, would put the sun about 030°. GHA, unlike longitude, is measured through 360°; the sun can never travel east, after all.
In simplified terms, when we take a sextant altitude of the sun we’re creating a right angle triangle between it, the earth’s surface at the GP, and ourselves. Grade school geometry tells us that the two angles in a right-angled triangle must equal 90°.
Celestial navigation is very much a team effort – one crew member takes a noonsight while another notes the figures
So, the complement to the altitude projects an angle from the sun onto the surface of the earth which, just like in the latitude example above, can be converted to nautical miles. After accounting for the sun’s declination north or south, depending on the season, this is precisely how we get our latitude from a noon sight.
A single sextant sight produces a giant circle of position, with the complement to our sextant altitude describing the radius of the circle, the GP at its centre. If we had a large enough chart, and an accurate way to take a compass bearing towards the GP, you could plot this using the simplest of fixes, bearing and range, to pinpoint a position on that circle. Alas, we have neither.
So, in a nutshell, modern celestial using the Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation (Pub. 249 in the US), allows us to compare the sextant reading from our unknown location at a known moment in time, with a sextant reading from a known location that’s somewhere in our neck of the woods, called the ‘assumed position’, and plot the difference on a chart, producing a single line of position that just so happens to be a tangent to that larger circle of position… Deep breath!
In reality, none of this is important to the modern GPS navigator. But – and here’s why I love teaching celestial navigation so much – these Eureka moments about geography and geometry and the basic understanding the fundamentals of celestial makes everyone a better navigator, whether you actually ever pickup a sextant or not.
The ocean felt deserted. There were no other boats to be seen, and no more flying fish. No dolphins. Nothing but the routine.
I don’t stand a watch on our Isbjörn passages, instead maintaining a more traditional captain’s role, overseeing the big picture and forever on-call should the crew need me on deck. Again, I’m modelling Moitessier.
He wrote once that when the weather is nice and things are going well, the captain can sleep for 36 hours if he wants. On the other hand, when the weather is bad, and stress high, the captain must remain at the helm indefinitely.
When things are good, I’ll often take half of Mia’s nighttime watch. There’s something about being alone in the cockpit at night. It’s precisely why I go ocean sailing.
Sunrise and moonset
I relieved Mia pre-dawn at 0400 and settled in for my two hours outside while the crew slept. Firmly into the mid-latitudes, and after another clearing frontal passage, the sky had lost all its Caribbean moisture and haze, replaced by a clarity in the air rarely seen ashore.
The glimmer in the east came early that morning. In opposition, the full moon casually and simultaneously sank lower on the horizon. I couldn’t decide where to focus my attention; I wanted to witness that first glimpse of the sun piercing the eastern horizon, but didn’t want to miss Mr Moon dipping ever lower in the west.
Isbjörn sailed on a northerly zephyr and an oily sea, forcing me to concentrate on the helm in order to maintain her momentum, but distracting me from that beautiful sunrise and moonset. It was very fine light-air sailing, but there were troubles with celestial. Where were we?
We’d forgotten to account for the apparent altitude when taking the noon sight the day before, a correction to the sextant angle that’s applied to account for the refraction of the sun’s ray’s in the atmosphere. The log read 581 miles sailed since leaving Tortola when I wrote in the logbook on the morning of 10 May, our fourth day at sea. It had been overcast the day before, so difficult to take any sun sights, and the ones we did get were off.
Photo: Isbjörn Sailing
To boot, we’d gone 12 hours overnight, sailing well east of the rhumb line, close-hauled on a light northerly, which didn’t allow us to lay the course.
Non-sailors assume celestial is about navigating by the stars, at night. It’s not, of course – star sights do the job, but you need a visible horizon, which only happens at dusk and dawn. So it’s down to Mr Sun, who guides you most of the way, and on cloudy days Mr Sun is hard to find. You’re always sailing blind at night.
No matter. At 0300 on the morning of 12 May, just before the dawn of our sixth day at sea, Gibb’s Hill Light on the south-west corner of Bermuda hove into view right where we expected it to. The log read 838 miles sailed.
Accurate enough
Celestial navigation had gotten Isbjörn to Bermuda, legitimately, and with a crew of amateur sailors, two of whom had only just learned the methods literally the day before departure. I’d always wondered if we could do it, and now I know.
It’s certainly not a practical, efficient means, by anyone’s reckoning. They say that ‘close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades’. And in celestial navigation.
Andy’s tattoos reflect his love of nautical tradition
The interesting part is that, without a GPS, we never really knew how accurate our sights were, and we still don’t. In the end Gibb’s Hill Light appeared where we expected it to. Our sextant sights, DR plots and LOP reductions were accurate enough to get us there successfully.
Nobody cared whether our individual LOPs throughout the trip were within two miles of our GPS position or ten, and the crew enjoyed stargazing at night, quickly forgetting the chartplotter gazing we’re all so used to.
Not unlike Heisenberg’s famous principle, perhaps the most profound irony of modern navigation is that the closer we get to perfect GPS accuracy, the farther we get from ever knowing where we truly are.

100+ Gift Ideas for Mum for Mother’s Day
New Post has been published on https://gardenguideto.com/awesome/100-gift-ideas-for-mum-for-mothers-day/
100+ Gift Ideas for Mum for Mother’s Day
Require some thoughtful gift ideas for Mum for all budgets? Whether “its for” Mother’s Day, Christmas, Mum’s birthday or just to say’ you’re special ‘, here are our suggestions for all cost ranges in mind.
Mother’s Day is one of the biggest Gift Giving days of the year for that special dame in our lives that wiped our butt and boogers, and still rings to check and see if we are okay, even though we are now all grown up. That dame, she is special. She is always there for us. But Mum’s can also be notoriously hard to buy for. My Mum isn’t really into anything which makes her really hard to shop for, I usually end up getting her flowers and earrings every year which is a bit snoozefest.
We cover all budgets- from FREE gifts- right up to fancy gifts worth hundreds of dollars.
Not this year, I’m going to shop around. She has had a big year, and I want to thank her for all the times she picked up my kids from school or did my food shopping because I simply didn’t have day. Thanks Mum.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 26th August 2018
There are many, and I mean many, new arrivals this week so let’s just get on with it, I’ll try to keep everything brief.
Top 10
“Shotgun” by George Ezra stays steady at the top, as does its runner-up.
Yep, “In My Feelings” by Drake featuring City Girls is a non-mover as it stays at number-two.
“Eastside” by benny blanco, Khalid and Halsey, on the other hand, is moving up a spot straight to number-three. I’m legitimately surprised at how quickly this is increasing, but I really doubt this is going anywhere higher than here.
Oh, and we have our first of two top 10 debuts this week, with “Promises” by Calvin Harris and Sam Smith entering the charts at number-four, which would be impressive if it weren’t Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, who do stuff like this all the time.
I am happy that Loud Luxury and brando’s “Body” is entering the top five here, as it ascends a spot to number-five. The song’s really growing on me.
“God is a woman” by Ariana Grande takes advantage of the Sweetener album release and increases by six spaces to number-six. Not complaining at all, I like this song.
“No Brainer”, meanwhile, by DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo and Chance the Rapper, has fell hard, four spots to number-seven.
Oh, and you know how a lot of artists stylise their songs in different ways? Well, Ariana Grande did that with every track from Sweetener (except one or two exceptions) and yeah, especially with the exceptions, it looks so unprofessional and lazy. I bring this up because the next song is called “breathin” and it’s by Ariana Grande featuring ILYA, debuting at number-eight. Come on, guys, your song title looks like a text message. At least it’s not in the same route as Aphex Twin or Lil Yachty, and their messy tracklists.
“Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B has not moved at number-nine.
Neither has “Taste” by Tyga featuring Offset, still barely clenching on at number-ten.
Climbers
There’s one. Literally one song has climbed by any notable amount. Other than one song, the biggest we have outside of the top 10 is by three spaces, so, yeah, the 14-spot climber, and the only climber worth talking about, is “Don’t Leave Me Alone” by David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie, now at #23, which I’m not necessarily bothered about at all.
Fallers
Now here is where it’s at. Let’s talk about all the relatively notable fallers, sorted by genre.
Starting with pop, we have “Youngblood” down eight positions to #15, while “If You’re Over Me” by Years & Years is down four spots to #33 and “2002” by Anne-Marie is down five spaces to #37.
EDM really suffered this week, though, as Jonas Blue’s “Rise” featuring Jack & Jack has descended 12 spaces to #17, Tiesto and Dzeko’s “Jackie Chan” featuring Preme and Post Malone is down a whopping 16 spots to #24, while Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss” slogs down six spaces to #28, right next to “Ocean” by Martin Garrix featuring Khalid, down four to #29.
Hip-hop and R&B had tough drops as well, hell, you could argue, they struggled even more. “Don’t Matter to Me” by Drake featuring Michael Jackson jumps down nine spots to #27, as Drake’s other track “Nonstop” has stopped gaining any traction down four spots to #30, while ZieZie’s “Fine Girl” is down five to #35, as Nicki Minaj’s “Bed” featuring Ariana Grande absolutely collapses by a whopping 16 positions straight to #39, ironically a spot away from #40, which has its spot taken by “I Like It” by Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, down nine spaces from last week.
Dropouts
Usually, when there are a lot of losers, there come a lot of songs dropping out of the charts as well, and it’s not any different this week, as “Better Now” by Post Malone is just forced out of the charts from #16, with “STARGAZING” by Travis Scott closely following from #27. “This is Me” by Keala Settle and The Greatest Showman Ensemble is also out from #39, joining another soundtrack single from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, “When I Kissed the Teacher”, out from #40. The absolutely wretched “Barbie Dreams” by Nicki Minaj is out from #36, while “First Time” by M-22 featuring Medina is also pushed out from only #24. Wow, it was a massacre in terms of losers and drop-outs, probably due to the immense amount of new arrivals, despite a surprising lack of returning entries from the late Aretha Franklin, and any at all, for that matter.
The Ed Sheeran Update
Where’s Ed Sheeran, you ask? Well, “Perfect” hasn’t moved from #61 and “Shape of You” is down four spots to #80.
NEW ARRIVALS
Alright, I’ll try and keep all entries of a decent yet not extensive length, especially since there are freaking seven of these to talk about.
#36 – “In My Mind” – Dynoro and Gigi D’Agostino
So, from what I can gather, Dynoro is a mysterious UK producer who just recently made his breakthrough with this mash-up. Yeah, this is a remix, I suppose, but this is borderline mash-up as it not-so-subtly intertwines elements from both the 2012 track “In My Mind” by Ivan Gough, Feenixpawl and Georgi Kay and the hook of the song “L’amour toujours”, a song released in 2000 by Italian DJ Gigi D’Agostino, which was a smash hit in a lot of Europe, but didn’t chart here in the UK. Yeah, so they’re sampling two songs, one of which is a quite memorable and some may say nostalgic track in order to lazily find a way for people to remember their song so they can get a hit without much effort. All that aside, is the track good enough to redeem the shady business practices? No. Not really. As I said, it’s basically a mash-up so it’s hard to really judge the song on its own merits, especially as it’s just some generic house with a rather ugly bass-synth wobble and a mind-numbingly repetitive hook. Not feeling this one’s concept or execution, at all.
#31 – “Happier” – Marshmello and Bastille
Oh, hey, Bastille, doing another track with an EDM producer for no good reason! I do like these guys, though, they’ve made some damn good, catchy, fun indie pop and pop rock in the past, and I still return to some of their hits like “Good Grief” and “Pompeii” to this day. The collaboration they had with Craig David was... okay, but knowing Marshmello’s track record of being mostly utter garbage, I don’t exactly have high hopes, and after listening, I can’t blame myself. It has some pretty okay skittering percussion and some nice strings in the pre-chorus, but the drop is so weak, man. Bastille’s lead vocalist is not straining himself at all, but he’s not putting much effort in either, some of this just feels like talking over copy-and-pasted guitar strumming and a synth in the drop that sounds like it has better things to do than spending time with a hack like Marshmello. It probably does, to be perfectly honest. That last pre-chorus is pretty cool, though, because the members of Bastille actually get some good guitars in, and there is a bit more “oomph” to the production generally. That drop sucks so badly, though, God. The song ends with “I will go”, which is somewhat amusing, I suppose. Skip this.
#26 – “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” – The 1975
Okay, first of all: what on Earth is that godawful song title and what the hell does it mean? Secondly, the 1975, what on God’s earth are you doing, and why?
It’s dancehall-ish pop. It’s tropical, vocal-sample-infected dance-pop with some Caribbean influences that are now typical of modern British popular music, with some awfully autotuned vocals from our lead singer, Matt Healy, here, who said just a few days or weeks prior, that no big rock band is doing anything unique or interesting right now, compared to what the 1975 is doing... you say, as you make one of the most predictable, trash-tier electro-pop songs I’ve ever heard, taking a page out of the Imagine Dragons’ book of separating yourself entirely from the rock scene. Healy’s band is one of the most popular rock bands at this point in time, so it’s expected for them to make some pop tunes, but given Healy’s pretentious lyrics in the last two tracks they’ve released, which I didn’t like as much I wanted to but at least appreciated for what they tried to do, as well as his recent statements, this song just seems rather hypocritical and (not like Healy would have changed this) borderline unlistenable and amateur. I can’t even say I expected much better.
#22 – “sweetener” – Ariana Grande featuring Pharrell
This is the first of two songs to debut from Ariana Grande’s newest, recently-released album Sweetener. Now, I haven’t listened to the album in full yet, but I am looking forward to as the singles seemed promising. I loved “no tears left to cry” and liked “God is a woman” and “the light is coming” a hell of a lot, so I’m excited to check out the record. The title track, however, does not really show any of the promise I saw in those singles. Jesus Christ, this is bad.
It starts with a pretty monotone piano melody while Grande sings pretty greatly as always, but then the percussion and bass kick in for a repetitive, kind of nonsensical hook, which is just pretty insufferable, while in the verses, Grande prefers to talk-sing over Pharrell’s goofy “sheesh!” ad-libs, which also repeat throughout the rest of this song, for some inexplicable reason. Yeah, I’m assuming Pharrell produced this, and I’m also assuming that whoever transcribed the Genius lyrics to this, who had to listen to this on full blast God knows how many times just to get the accurate transcription of those Pharrell ad-libs, because they seem to be subtly different each time and while I appreciate attention to detail, I hate when that detail goes into something as moronic and pointless as Pharrell ad-libs. This gets a “sheesh” from me.
#16 – “All I Am” – Jess Glynne
Oh, okay, more Jess Glynne, we needed that after the trainwreck that was “I’ll be There”. So, what specific parts of her potential will be wasted in this song? Actually, wasn’t this promoted by Spotify ads? It must be good then. Well, it’s not bad, but it’s not particularly interesting either. It’s just some desaturated piano and annoying yet only brief vocal samples backing some house-like rhythm and Jess Glynne’s as-pretty-much-always fantastic vocals, which are only really all that prominent in the catchy hook. The wobbly synth-bass that shows up throughout kind of feels somewhat out-of-place but it’s also barely noticeable outside of the verses, so, call me stumped. I have no opinion on this song whatever – the pros outweigh the cons but there are simply not enough of those pros to make it all that good. It’s okay. It’s not like I’d change the station but it’s not like I’d turn the volume up or anything.
#8 – “breathin” – Ariana Grande featuring ILYA
So, this is the ninth track from Sweetener, featuring production, instrumentation and uncredited background vocals from Ilya Salmanzadeh, or ILYA, and it not having Pharrell related to it at all should be good, right? Well, kinda? I love the vocals here, but I’m not surprised by that at all, instead I’m surprised by how fun this instrumental is for such a dramatic song about anxiety. There’s a barely noticeable bass supporting a pounding drum beat and some nice synth and piano melodies, as well as what I assume are pretty rapidly-clapped handclaps in the second verse, and the drop is pretty fun too, with Grande ad-libbing over what could either be some strings or vocal manipulation, it’s anyone’s guess, but you know, it sounds good enough, despite doing absolutely nothing for me. It’s listenable and I’m not going to say it isn’t a damn good attempt at an inspirational anthem, but I’m not really all that in the know about why this song was any special, out of all the songs on the tracklist. Maybe when I listen to the rest of the album, the reason will be is that the rest is pretty terrible, and knowing Pharrell and his attempts at producing modern pop music, that’s probably the reason, but I’ll see. For now, this is pretty okay, but I don’t see it growing on me in time as much as stuff like “Better Now” and “One Kiss” have.
#4 – “Promises” – Calvin Harris and Sam Smith
Now, part of me hoped this was going to be utter rubbish so I could ask Calvin Harris to “promise me no promises”, but even if it was, I don’t think it’d be all that worthy of any jokes being made out of it. There’s some nice UK Garage-influenced percussion that Sam Smith usually excels in, but those backing vocals are bloody awful and the laughing is obnoxious, and Sam doesn’t seem to be putting any effort in at all. It’s not even catchy, and the piano is nothing more than an additional instrument to add to what seems to be some kind of experimental minimalistic artsy masterpiece I just don’t get, I don’t know, I seriously don’t see the appeal or any reason I should write more than I already have. What is the point of this existing? I’m curious.
Conclusion
I don’t have much passion for this show in particular anymore, and it’s weeks like this which get me to that point. When the artists aren’t bothering whilst making the art, why should I bother analysing it? Anyway, since I kind of have to, Dishonourable Mention goes to The 1975 for “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME”, yep, that’s right, it’s not even getting Worst of the Week despite being one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. The song that does its job as a pop song with the least care is “Promises”. Worst of the Week goes to Calvin Harris and Sam Smith for making a song that shouldn’t and probably doesn’t actually exist, yet here it is, and I don’t understand how this song even got in the top 100 other than star power. It’s not catchy, it’s not interesting and it’s barely even an accessible pop song, it’s just noise, with no real hook or anything that grabs me. Best of the Week goes to nothing and there’s nothing that is an Honourable Mention here, so why not tie Dishonourable Mention with Dynoro and Gigi D’Agostino for one of the laziest hit songs I’ve heard in a while, “In My Mind”, and introduce another category: “Sheesh of the Week”. The song that is just hilariously dumb and maybe even so bad it’s good gets Sheesh of the Week, and it’s pretty obvious that Pharrell and Ariana Grande get it this week for the category’s namesake, “breathin”. See ya next time!

Christiano Jordano : Passion Before Money
BPM Supreme®, Hard Beverages® and Big Joe® Present Interview With Christiano Jordano for Miami Music Week 2018.
Christiano Jordano joined us at the Nexus Radio red-carpet event presented by Big Joe®, Hard Beverages® and BPM Supreme® for Miami Music Week/Winter Music Conference 2018.
Christiano is an Italian-American Club DJ and music producer with success on the Billboard charts as well as dance radio.
Jordano talks about his new single “Angels in Tokyo,” a euphoric and emotional self-release track with minimal vocals. He also talks about his musical style which he describes as very ‘Anjuna beats’ and ‘Above & Beyond.’ However, when it comes to naming one of his favorite Italian DJs- he preferred the Italo-Disco vibes of Gigi D’Agostino.
Jordano had very inspiring advice that he would share with his 15-year-old self:
“Don’t worry about other people, focus on yourself. Try to figure out what you love to do and what really makes you passionate and actually go out and do that. Don’t go after money, go after something you’re passionate about that you can make a career out of, and just spend all your time doing that and everything will fall into place.”
In a heart-felt moment, Christiano shared that his mom is his number one supporter and a fundamental force in pushing him to pursue his dreams. We asked him who he would take with him on a trip around the world:
“I would have to say my mom because she is my number one fan, she’s my biggest supporter, and, man – I don’t get emotional, but she definitely pushes me to go after what I love to do no matter what.”
