Hey can you clarify why Caesar is so wrong abt Rome when arguing with Arcade? I woulda wanted to hear his rebuttal :)
So Iā€™m far from an expert when it comes to Roman history but i do know a lot about facist talking points and Rome. And boy do they loveee talking about Rome(which is the basis of the Legion as a faction in general. Weirdo facist rome larpers). As mentioned in my shitpost they like to claim Rome Fell due to ā€œmoral degeneracyā€. Its kinda the oldest talking point in the book you can see it used by Nazis in the 1930ā€™s and The Daily Wire today. And an opinion i ascribed to the legion.
Many of these quote on quote ā€œdegeneracies ā€ that i hear from facists and neo-cons include taxation(which is a bit fair given lack of representation but they never frame this honestly or correctly, making the problem about taxes in general rather than lack of democratic representation)and womans rights. Thereā€™s also this vague idea of Romanā€™s ā€œstraying from traditionā€.If you look more at the nazi side they focus heavily on immigration/integration and race mixing which i personally donā€™t think are reasonings sallow or the legion would call degenerate as the very structure of the legion is based on forced integration.(adding this later but also ā€˜degeneracyā€™ as in homosexuality and orgies which is so stupid because that was a part of roman culture from the start but whatever! Facists are never honest!)
Arcade, and any honest scholar who knows anything about Rome, knows that ā€œThe Fall of Romeā€ had numerous causes.( and the overall framing of the fall of rome being a singular event is inherently dishonest, as it occurred over hundreds of years. Also for further clarification this is about the fall of the WESTERN roman empire which is what the dialogue tends to revolve around)
So what caused the ā€œfall of the roman empireā€. The simple answer is they lost to the goths but why was this so devastating? And why didnā€™t they recover?( its far from the first time Rome lost). Well as previously mentioned thereā€™s a lot of reasons. Arcade is well educated on Rome( the followers clearly have an extensive library regarding roman history). The points I see him using would be pointing out the internal political problems with Rome and its treatment of its conquered people. Specifically its enlisting of people into its army, taxing, and controlling of people(like the italians and gauls) while refusing them representation respect or proper citizenship. The last of Romeā€™s emperorā€™s was killed in an uprising from these armys full of second class citizens. Turns out building your military on conquered people you treat like shit is inherently unsustainable, and I see that as something Arcade would want to throw in Sallowā€™s face.

For those not tapped into Australian politics, King Charles is in Australia to conduct his "historic first tour to the commonwealth realm" i.e visting countries that King Charles is supposedly a monarch to.
Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe had requested an audience with King Charles for weeks prior to this visit, she wrote countless letters to speak to him. Unlike other commonwealth nations and other former Brisitish colonies, a treaty with Indigenous peoples in Australia was never formed. Their land was never ceded to the British Crown. After being denied and ignored, Lidia Thorpe, draped in a traditional possum skin cloak, stormed in the Great Hall during the reception for Charles at Parliament House in the capital shouting the following:

I met a girl when I was fresh out of high school in undergrad who frankly, annoyed me quite a bit, but I also had an inkling to continue to be compassionate to her given a few things about her life/background/family
I ran into her two years ago. Last week, her daughter turned 1. This girl, letā€™s called her ā€œPā€, is a really good example of why I never feel comfortable mocking trad wives
Her perfect trad husband, who was a shining young figure in the local religious community, volunteered in all sorts of groups, well loved in his workplace and everything else, beat her up at 1 month post-partum. I reached out to her after seeing her desperately asking for a stroller on a page, confused and slightly concerned knowing both of them came from wealthy backgrounds.
The reality for lots of tradwives living ā€œperfect livesā€ is this: P was immediately ostracised. All the wealth of her husband and her family meant absolutely nothing if she wasnā€™t in favour and doing what she was told. Her child and her well-being didnā€™t matter. P, at 25 years old, was basically deemed an oopsie, and left on her own to figure out how to pay for herself, a baby, find housing, and every other task you can think of.
Having known many of these women (and supported many of these women), another factor most people donā€™t consider is this: they are intentionally raised to be helpless. When I immediately offered my support to P, she really needed it. This young woman needed to be guided through how to apply for government assistance, how to weigh up rentals and apply for them, how to apply for jobs, how to sign up for childcare. How to sign up for your own power and internet, and how to connect them.
It wasnā€™t that she was ā€œstupidā€, or incapable, or spoiled. While it looks like theyā€™re being sheltered, in reality, these women are practically being held hostage. Sure, they might be allowed to learn things that are expected of them (see: basic cooking, baking, cleaning, child rearing, womenā€™s bible studies, hosting, and so forth) but they are heavily controlled from family life into marriage life, and they are never given the opportunity or the reality of what many of us would consider basic adult tasks.
Sheā€™s doing okay now. Her daughter turned 1, is happy and healthy. They live frugally, but they have a roof over their heads and the essentials. I often babysit for her so she can attend counselling, or go to a womanā€™s support group. She is painfully aware that she has so much to learn about how to live as an adult.
I donā€™t envy tradwives, but I donā€™t find any joy in mocking them either. Even when they live the most picturesque lives, theyā€™re also practically living a real life Jenga game. If (and often, when) it comes tumbling down, theyā€™re screwed too, and they often have 0 skills to help themselves or find community (that again, isnā€™t carefully curated).

They need to invent more fake celebrities like Hatsune Miku and Gorillaz and the Muppets because it's genuinely the most sustainable way to maintain a parasocial relationship with the entertainer class.

[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled "immortalityā€ after the poem by clare harner (more popularly known as ā€œdo not stand at my grave and weepā€). the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, ā€œdo not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.ā€ page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, ā€œi am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.ā€ the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, ā€œwhen you awaken in the morningā€™s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.ā€ the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, ā€œi am not there. i did not dieā€ / end id]
a comic i made in about 15 hours for my schoolā€™s comic anthology. the theme was ā€œevolutionā€
