Hey can you clarify why Caesar is so wrong abt Rome when arguing with Arcade? I woulda wanted to hear his rebuttal :)

So I’m far from an expert when it comes to Roman history but i do know a lot about facist talking points and Rome. And boy do they loveee talking about Rome(which is the basis of the Legion as a faction in general. Weirdo facist rome larpers). As mentioned in my shitpost they like to claim Rome Fell due to “moral degeneracy”. Its kinda the oldest talking point in the book you can see it used by Nazis in the 1930’s and The Daily Wire today. And an opinion i ascribed to the legion.

Many of these quote on quote “degeneracies ” that i hear from facists and neo-cons include taxation(which is a bit fair given lack of representation but they never frame this honestly or correctly, making the problem about taxes in general rather than lack of democratic representation)and womans rights. There’s also this vague idea of Roman’s “straying from tradition”.If you look more at the nazi side they focus heavily on immigration/integration and race mixing which i personally don’t think are reasonings sallow or the legion would call degenerate as the very structure of the legion is based on forced integration.(adding this later but also ‘degeneracy’ as in homosexuality and orgies which is so stupid because that was a part of roman culture from the start but whatever! Facists are never honest!)

Arcade, and any honest scholar who knows anything about Rome, knows that “The Fall of Rome” had numerous causes.( and the overall framing of the fall of rome being a singular event is inherently dishonest, as it occurred over hundreds of years. Also for further clarification this is about the fall of the WESTERN roman empire which is what the dialogue tends to revolve around)

So what caused the “fall of the roman empire”. The simple answer is they lost to the goths but why was this so devastating? And why didn’t they recover?( its far from the first time Rome lost). Well as previously mentioned there’s a lot of reasons. Arcade is well educated on Rome( the followers clearly have an extensive library regarding roman history). The points I see him using would be pointing out the internal political problems with Rome and its treatment of its conquered people. Specifically its enlisting of people into its army, taxing, and controlling of people(like the italians and gauls) while refusing them representation respect or proper citizenship. The last of Rome’s emperor’s was killed in an uprising from these armys full of second class citizens. Turns out building your military on conquered people you treat like shit is inherently unsustainable, and I see that as something Arcade would want to throw in Sallow’s face.

For those not tapped into Australian politics, King Charles is in Australia to conduct his "historic first tour to the commonwealth realm" i.e visting countries that King Charles is supposedly a monarch to.

I met a girl when I was fresh out of high school in undergrad who frankly, annoyed me quite a bit, but I also had an inkling to continue to be compassionate to her given a few things about her life/background/family

I ran into her two years ago. Last week, her daughter turned 1. This girl, let’s called her “P”, is a really good example of why I never feel comfortable mocking trad wives

Her perfect trad husband, who was a shining young figure in the local religious community, volunteered in all sorts of groups, well loved in his workplace and everything else, beat her up at 1 month post-partum. I reached out to her after seeing her desperately asking for a stroller on a page, confused and slightly concerned knowing both of them came from wealthy backgrounds.

The reality for lots of tradwives living “perfect lives” is this: P was immediately ostracised. All the wealth of her husband and her family meant absolutely nothing if she wasn’t in favour and doing what she was told. Her child and her well-being didn’t matter. P, at 25 years old, was basically deemed an oopsie, and left on her own to figure out how to pay for herself, a baby, find housing, and every other task you can think of.

Having known many of these women (and supported many of these women), another factor most people don’t consider is this: they are intentionally raised to be helpless. When I immediately offered my support to P, she really needed it. This young woman needed to be guided through how to apply for government assistance, how to weigh up rentals and apply for them, how to apply for jobs, how to sign up for childcare. How to sign up for your own power and internet, and how to connect them.

It wasn’t that she was “stupid”, or incapable, or spoiled. While it looks like they’re being sheltered, in reality, these women are practically being held hostage. Sure, they might be allowed to learn things that are expected of them (see: basic cooking, baking, cleaning, child rearing, women’s bible studies, hosting, and so forth) but they are heavily controlled from family life into marriage life, and they are never given the opportunity or the reality of what many of us would consider basic adult tasks.

She’s doing okay now. Her daughter turned 1, is happy and healthy. They live frugally, but they have a roof over their heads and the essentials. I often babysit for her so she can attend counselling, or go to a woman’s support group. She is painfully aware that she has so much to learn about how to live as an adult.

I don’t envy tradwives, but I don’t find any joy in mocking them either. Even when they live the most picturesque lives, they’re also practically living a real life Jenga game. If (and often, when) it comes tumbling down, they’re screwed too, and they often have 0 skills to help themselves or find community (that again, isn’t carefully curated).

Quick reminder as we head into Trump’s first week in office. We are about to see an onslaught of executive actions designed to strip of us our rights. We’ve seen this before.

Many of them won’t be legal, many of them won’t take effect immediately, and some of them will be just plain nonsense. Trump alone can’t change the law (yet anyway- that’s Congress) and there is an official government process for enacting most executive actions that works slowly.*

There will be time to fight against these orders—either by stopping them entirely, weakening them, or at least slowing them down.

The purpose of doing so many terrible things at once is to scare us. Is to intimidate us to cede more ground than we need to. Don’t let them.

Stay engaged, stay angry, stay hopeful (or spiteful- me tbh), and—most importantly—stay strategic. Find an organization you trust, follow them, and take action when they ask you to.

(Side note- pick just a few issues to care deeply about and only follow a few organizations you trust. Don’t try to solve everything all the time or consume every piece of news. You WILL burn yourself out and that’s not helpful for anyone. Trust me, speaking from experience. Staying 15% engaged is better than 120% for three months and then 0%).

What we’re seeing right now is a backlash to decades of progress—a dying (and by extension dangerous I’m not gonna lie) breath of those in power desperate to maintain control. They wouldn’t be trying to squash us if there wasn’t something to squash.

TL;DR- there’s gonna be a lot of bad stuff in the news today. Don’t give into panic. There will be time to fight most of it. Stay engaged.
