Of all the many wonderful moments in Harvestella, I think some of my favorites are when Brakka and Istina are playing off each other. They have the weirdest, most absolutely charming dark humor and mercenary+assassin solidarity, especially when they're poking fun at Team Nerd Howls Moving Castle Heine.
Just... As they go into space:
Istina: Miss a step and you'll become a shooting star. 🙂 Brakka: We could all make a wish on you. 😌 Heine: Please stop 🙃

Another new fic today, and it's for Cres/Istina! This was also written for a recent fanworks exchange, and I enjoyed the chance to write a Harvestella fic. Istina and Cres don't interact much in canon, so it was especially fun to imagine what kind of relationship they might build together after the events of canon.

Asyl: Why is everyone so obsessed with top or bottom? Honestly, I’d just be excited to have a bunk bed.
Aria:
Aria: I'm gonna tell him.
Istina: Don't you dare.

Harvestella character analysis playlist:
‼️MAJOR GAME SPOILERS‼️
Ein - Out of Mana (Brand New) "I'm a ghost | I can't say I know that I'm even here | Or is this some eternal test | Hold me close | I'll never know if it's more or less | No reset"
Ein, but also, "you": The One Who Whispers To Them. Ein is a vessel, but also their own being. They are forced to confront impossible decision after impossible decision and decide how to create a future from it. No chance to redo, they only get one true shot to get things right.
-
Aria - Personal Jesus (Mindless Self Indulgence cover) "Feeling unknown | And you're all alone | Flesh and bone | By the telephone | Pick up the receiver | Make you a believer"
Aria is what I would consider the self-imposed martyr of the group. She takes on every responsibility as if it's her own and backs herself into a corner over it. Wants nothing more than to be able to rely on others but feels she can't. Ends up putting her faith in Ein to make the decision that she ultimately can't follow through with. She has no faith, but must.
-
Asyl - Two Letters (Bayside) "And it takes a lot to shake me and my body breaks to figure out |How to leave the past behind when it's around all of the time | And I don't know what I should call you"
The phrase "how to leave the past behind" sums up Asyl's entire character arc. He can't leave Otella alone, he loves her so much even if she scares and saddens him. He wants to do what he can for her, and if he can't then he wants her to leave the town alone. He doesn't believe her, but can't find it in himself to distrust her. The love he has for her blinds his judgement, but it's his best quality. He is loyal beyond all else, and it is his vice and virtue.
-
Istina - Only If For A Night (Florence and the Machine) "And the only solution was to stand and fight | And my body was bruised and I was set alight | But you came over me like some holy rite"
Istina's character arc follows her growth from rejecting her past to accepting it as a part of herself. The strive she was forced to live with, forced to fight for. A lifetime of pain inflicted to and by her, and she must somehow figure out how to not only look past but accept it. The only way to find redemption is to make it.
-
Heine - Ship in a Bottle (Fin) "You set sail alone, there is no crew | No one on the deck who can help you | This is all your own battle to win | This is your ship and you are the captain"
Heine is genuinely Grief Incarnate. He lets his mourning of Fiasola overtake his entire being. He can't let himself live without taking on those qualities of hers that she left behind. He changes from being the pushback of their dynamic duo to being the push and the pull. He feels himself to be alone, but in the sense of being dishonest with himself and incapable of forming true connections until meeting Ein. "Oh Captain let's make a deal, where we both say the things that we both really feel." He can't be honest with his grieving until he is forced to be, when there is no option but to be honest.
-
Emo - You Are The Moon (The Hush Sound) "Darkness, darkness everywhere, do you feel all alone? | The subtle grace of gravity, the heavy weight of stone"
An endless chasm of death, a desolation so profound it cannot be described. To have her home destroyed, her family reduced to nothing but memory, she is the only pillar left to save Lorelei from itself. She is alone, and yet she is kind, she is understanding. Someone with nothing, still willing to give everything for those around her.
-
Brakka - What Doesn't Kill You Will Make You A Killer (Rabbit Junk) "What doesn't kill you will make you a killer | Your eyes are screaming that you're high on rage | Nails, splinters, glowing embers | How you arrived, you don't remember | And you're never going back in that cage"
Brakka will do anything for revenge, at any cost, and when it's taken from him he becomes completely despondent. To him, it's his everything, his reason for being, the only reason to exist. Having it taken from his, it's worse than any withdrawal, it's a fate worse than death. But he must continue, there is no other option.
-
Shrika - Church (Fall Out Boy) "Trust me, that's what I will be | Oh, the things that you do in the name of what you love | You were doomed but just enough"
Thersites - Church (Fall Out Boy) "And if death is the last appointment | Then we're all just sitting in the waiting room | I am just a human trying to avoid my certain doom"
Two sides of the same coin. The love/loath that organized religion creates. Shrika, the caring missionary, and Thersites, the cynic forced to conform. Thersites wouldn't be compelling without Shrika's compassion, and Shrika wouldn't be compelling without Thersites' pessimistic realism.
-
Dianthus - Jitter Doll (Judyphonic Cover) "Its so loud | Through my head, came all this static noise around | What's the word again? They call it love, oh yes| That a human feels so deep"
Desperate to feel love, desperate to understand love, Dianthus is so close to the edge of corruption at any time. Her consciousness is at risk of ending up like Geist the more she interacts with the Abels, but she loves them. Even though she pretends to not understand, she does. There is a noise so loud in her wiring, and she knows it's love.
-
Geist - Starkiller (Bear Ghost) "Don't resist, just give in | Save us some time | Well, I'd ask for your soul | But it's already mine"
Song chosen more for the vibe and literal name of it, but it still fits the theme of Corrupted Geist not considering any alternatives. He has a hypercritical mindset and refuses to take no for an answer. He believes there is a correct answer to an impossible question, and as a result corrupts both literally and figuratively.
-
Unicorn - The Vampyre of Time and Memory (Queens of the Stone Age) "I want God to come and take me home | 'Cause I'm all alone in this crowd | Who are you to me? Who am I supposed to be? | Not exactly sure anymore"
If you had to chose between living in knowledge that you were created as a construct, everything you've ever known was falsified... Could you? Your love isn't real. Your identity isnt real. You are nothing more than an experiment created by God with artificial memories. Could you persist?

Harvestella Life Partners
So when I did my review of Harvestella, I thought you could only marry a select number of people that fell into certain catagories and to a point, that's true. The main thing that seems to determine who you can ask to be your life partner are two things. 1. They must be a part of your travel party , or someone you have a closeness meter with. (Though for some hilarious reason, the Mayor of Leithe Village, an elderly man, is an option you can send a letter too.) 2. The person you are asking must have a 10 closness level and have their personal storyline completed. Now, even if you are not going to ask someone, most of these people need to be at least level 5 closeness to get the full potential out of the jobs they awaken in you. The only exceptions to this are Cres and Unicorn who, while they have a closeness meter, do not travel with you, and Cres doesn't awaken any abilities in you. All the available options have a fairly sweet responses to being asked to be your life partner, so just choose who you like best. Now I'm going to be going into who you can actually ask, how long it takes them to respond to your letter (if they respond at all) and when you are supposed to meet them. Oh, and the Fall Seaslight Fairy (suggested name Juno, but I call her Ember) will be the one to take the letter to your chosen partner. Once you chose a partner, you cannot unchoose that partner, so if you want to experience all of the options, make sure to save multiple files of the COMPLETED game (or be willing to play the game from the beginning to get to the completed game), as you can only choose your life partner after finishing the story. There are a total of 10 life partner options
Aria-Will respond to your request to speak to her by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet her in her pod in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Asyl-Will respond to your request to speak to him by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet him in his home (or near the observations deck, I can't remember which) in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Brakka-Will respond to your request to speak to him by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet him in his hideout in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Cres-Will respond to your request to speak to her by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet her in her clinic in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Dianthus-Will respond to your request to speak to her by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet her the airship in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Emo-Will respond to your request to speak to her by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet her at the bar where she performs in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Heine-Will respond to your request to speak to him by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet him in his atelier in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Istina-Will respond to your request to speak to her by sending a letter 2 days later (so, if you send Ember out on, say the 19th of any season, you'll get a response on the 21st). Asks you to meet her in her room at the orphanage (the library, roughly) in the evening (between 7pm-9pm)
Shrika-Will not send a letter. Shrika will appear next day and drag you out of your house to do a ceremony of binding, because she absolutely wants to be your life partner.
Unicorn-Will not respond to your letter. 3 days after sending the letter, your quest is to go check on Unicorn in his forest.
Hope this helps. I don't want to give away how they all react to your request, though it's pretty obvious Ember is excited for you and about half the people you can ask, maybe more, maybe less, will remark she spilled the beans on what the letter is about.

WIP Wednesday - Hot New Fandom Edition
It's been a hot minute since I've posted anything for WIP Wednesday, mainly because I've been working on various zine pieces which must be kept under wraps. But I've also started numerous WIPs for Harvestella in the past 2 months~ since I started playing it. Most of it is fucked-up Therakka stuff lol but I have some other Ideas, including this piece I started about Heine/m!Ein.
This is about them getting together, and I think it was set between chapters 8 and 9? I can't remember entirely but I feel my replay (I'm at ch. 4 rn) will remind me lol. ANYWAY. Things eventually get a bit spicy but what's behind the cut is just Heine having (slightly alcohol-influenced) feelingz about Ein and his new band of friends.
(Also i Haven't watched Heine's proposal event so if anything in that contradicts what I've written here, I'll find out and change accordingly but I think I'm on the right track. )
I tried to get this under a readmore but tumblr doesn't want to work! Sorry! :(
Everyone. Their faces swim in his mind: Aria and her keen insight, her insatiable craving for the answers to life – all life; past present, and future. Asyl and Istina, the very personification of Nemea with their resilience and grace. Brakka, cold as Argene and twice as ruthless, and Shrika, so poised and possessing an indomitable spirit that perhaps can only be explained by a Holy Mother’s blessing. That delightfully strange Omen, Dianthus, offering a perspective Heine will never not find fascinating.
His dear Princess Emo, whom he rescued because no one should be put through the hell she was subjected to, but felt more of an obligation to (misery loves company, after all) than a genuine connection. Now, he can not bear to ever think of losing her. Her generosity and kindness, her pure soul unblemished by the destruction wrought upon her enclave, surpasses what he or Fiasola or any great mind could ever draft up, could ever dream of inventing.
And Ein. Oh, his wonderful, irreplaceable friend who, for reasons he still can not fathom, seems to care extensively about who Heine is as a man and not solely in what he accomplishes as inventor, nor is affected by the charms Heine’s learned to wield more as a means to deter, than to ever entice.
Heine has spent so many years in a sort of solitude; his purpose, his satisfaction comes from seeing what he can create, what can be discovered. His individual existence is insignificant compared to what lay out there, beyond and untapped and unearthed. He’d finally invited Fiasola into that world of his – rather, she kicked the door down and invited herself in, leaving him besotted with that determination and initiative of hers from the very beginning – and there was always going to be time for more. More ideas, more adventures, more talks and laughs and arguments and drinks to make-up over said arguments.
Until there wasn’t.
#wip wednesday#harvestella#no but literally if anyone knows how to add a readmore lmk bc it doesn't use the shortcut anymore#and i feel like an ass sharing stuff w/o readmores

still dont know what i think of harvestella lol.
just spoilers below at some point
its one of those "i hate this game im rolling my eyes constantly... but i keep playing and im obviously enjoying it", its like xenoblade 2 to me for that reason. i keep calling it slop bc it kinda is. its my stupid piggy slop.
i think i just like games where it feels like youre collecting a lot of things, completing lists, and have many mechanics overlaying each other. so, harvestella has that. the farming and getting new ingredients and completing the cooking sidequests and fishing feels good.
what had me rolling my eyes the entire time was the story and the writing. and by the end it got obvious that the directors wanted to make a story rpg and added the farming on top of that... but i was never there for the story anyways. they also had a particular twist they were writing for. and that climax is so good. but everything leading up to it is actually infuriating and everything after is just Standard RPG ending.
the writing is really predictable, but in a way that pisses me off. but im also aware that im taking it way too seriously. like. i could not care about at least half of the cast. a lot of them are just tropes. (istina, shrika, brakka are the worst imo. asyl is just nothing and boring.) and i dont know why they're there. i dont know why theyre following my protag into alternate dimensions and shit.
in the final fight i laughed because i was beating the boss's ass, and of course my protag falls to the ground and is laying down in the void. and of course these stupid characters call out to her. because thats what rpgs do. its like the story is just ticking boxes because This Is What Elements An Rpg Story Has. but they dont fit together in a way that makes me give a shit about the world.
ive seen ppl compare it to xenoblade in story. and that is only because of the massive reveals about the nature of the worlds existence. but i dont think its a perfect comparison because xenoblade makes me actually give a shit and be interested about the world. and the characters. and the way the world affects them. and the politics and history of the world etc. its only a "xenoblade twist" because it revealed a universe-level thing about the planet youre on.
the gaia/regaia stuff was really cool actually. it was so good in the moment that i got pissed that this concept was used. on this story. with these shitty characters that i dont give a fuck about 😭. what a cool idea to set up a trolley problem like that and have the deuteragonist betray you. love the idea of an apocalypse happening and creating a second earth and accidentally creating a second humanity and then having to choose which should live. but its used on these characters and this game. damn.
aria is one of the only redeeming qualities of the story to me. only near the end did i notice the pattern of having her, in chapter 5, say "i cant kill all those people" to basically following geist's steps until she gets to the point where she says "ok, this is the only way, we have to kill all these people." For a story about hope and the irrationality of human emotions, it was a good set up. and making the only way out of the trolley problem be blind hope was interesting.
i do not like how the game forces your hand on this though. i generally hate the protag character. i hate the dialogue options. this game constantly gives you two dialogue options that mean the same thing. and the choices mean nothing. why even give me a choice then. when you finally get a choice, it rolls credits on you instantly if you make the Obvious Bad Choice. and there's really no reason for ein to be the way they are, i think. the respect and trust other characters have in them is mostly undeserved imo. im not sure why the blank slate amnesiac is thrust into the hero role when all they do is stay silent or say generic things.
if i start talking about the character stories this will get even longer but i really did not like most of them. i really only enjoyed heine and unicorn's. dianthus was pretty good too. most of them i was just rolling my eyes the entire time like "of course that happened" "this is dumb" "damn can i go back to my farm and harvest my pumpkins jfc" "why am i even talking to this character they clearly dont want me around and hate me"
anyways i loved this game or at least i loved playing it. but it was a coins toss as to whether or not i'd enjoy any cutscene that got in my way. and there's no cutscene skip button. thats insane. in 2022. grow the fuck up and give me a skip scene button.
#completely disorganized no proof read GOOOOO#i just want to talk about this game not many ppl i know even know about it#also sorry if you liked this game i seriously dont. but i do. but i dont.
