Drawing (Zoomorphic Calligraphy, Elephant)
North India or Pakistan, possibly Lahore, late 19th c.
Black ink on paper
“Ornamental calligraphy in the form of a running elephant, saddled with a double-seated high saddle. The whole embodies the name and titles of a Nawab of Jasra.”
V&A IM.19-1916
“See letter of Hendley to Caspar Purdon Clarke, December 31 1915 on NFMA/1/H1596, Hendley Family, where he notes that these were from 'the bazaar' and are the originals of those published by him and Chaubey Bisvesvar Nath of Jaipur in the Journal of Indian Art. Several of the calligraphic birds and animals reproduced in the Journal are signed and give their place of origin as Lahore, or the Lahore bazaar.”

Embroidered onto the sleeve is an Arabic love poem by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. It reads: قالوا: تموت بها حبـاًً، فقلـت لهـم ‏ألا اذكروها علـى قبـري فتحيينـي English translation: They asked “Do you love her to death?” I said “Speak of her over my grave and watch how she brings me back to life.” All proceeds from Hadal’s ‘Love Language’ pieces will be donated to Palestinian aid organisations.

ما شاء الله. '‘Eid sweets gifted by various staff members at the COVID center! ^^ The calligraphy reads “‘Eid Mubarak” (“Blessed ‘Eid.”) I was using the inside of the lid of my lunchbox (still half full of cereal) as a plate for these chocolates, shhh.'

What's Unique About Islamic Calligraphy Art?
Islamic calligraphy art is a beautiful and intricate form of visual art that celebrates the Arabic language and its poetry. Originating in the Middle East, Islamic calligraphy art has undergone many changes and expressions over the years to express more abstract ideas. While traditional Islamic calligraphy is still practiced today, artists have begun to experiment with new styles that express more open-ended ideas. This form of art bridges cultures from all over the world and is highly esteemed for its unique composition and details.
Symbolism And Meaning Behind The Calligraphy
A calligraphy is a beautiful form of art that has been used for centuries in Islamic countries. Each piece of calligraphy is unique, and each artist has their own distinct style. Some examples of Islamic calligraphy include the Kufi script, Diwani script, and Thuluth script.
The use of geometry and intricate detail to create a unified work is what makes calligraphy so beautiful. Symbolic artwork can often be interpreted in many different ways, which allows for a great deal of flexibility in how it can be used. Calligraphers often use religious symbols, verses, and motifs to create an aesthetically pleasing product.
Calligraphy has a long history dating back to antiquity, and it remains an important part of Islamic culture today. It reinforces spiritual values and cultural heritage while offering insight into traditional Islamic beliefs and practices. By studying calligraphy, you can gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating art form.
The Unique Style Of Islamic Artistic Expression
Islamic artwork is predominantly non-figurative, which means that the focus is not on depicting people or objects but rather on capturing the beauty of nature and the Divine. The language used in Islamic writing forms part of the artwork itself, adding an extra layer of beauty and mystique to each piece.
While many Islamic paintings feature abstract geometric shapes and motifs, there is also a great deal of figurative imagery present. This variety helps to captivate the viewer with its simplicity and mystery. Additionally, bold colors and intricate patterns are used throughout Islamic art to create a unique piece of artwork each time. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, these elements provide visual rhythm and harmony as well as added coloration for an ever-changing space.
Preserving & Appreciating Islamic Calligraphy For Future Generations
There's something special about Arabic calligraphy that can't be matched by any other type of writing. The intricate hand strokes, the variation between cultures, and the color schemes are all part of what makes Islamic calligraphy so unique. Islamic calligraphy has been around for centuries, and it has played a major part in shaping the culture and traditions of many different countries.
Today, there's a growing appreciation for Islamic calligraphy both in the Middle East and globally. Through preservation methods such as digitization and online exhibitions, we're able to bring awareness to this ancient form of art while promoting dialogue between cultures. At the same time, we're working to educate future generations about the tradition and significance of Islamic calligraphy.
Let us embrace the beauty of Islamic calligraphy and Islamic decals by taking the time to explore this wonderful tradition!

This artist I follow, Joumana Medlej, practices traditional Islamic painting and calligraphy, and studies recipes for early Islamic ink-making. In this blog series she is exploring ancient ink recipes used in grimoire magic and the making of astrological talismans.
This is for one, EXTREMELY COOL, and for two, the exact intersection of a bunch of my friends’ niche interests. So here you go. Plan to lose several hours reading this amazing blog.
