And this is the last chapter of a Bleach fic I started in 2012! Finally, it is finished! Yay!

Reconnecting - It took his death for them to be friends again, and more.

They continued what had become a new tradition of mending and conversation. While he had no interest in the politics of the Gotei 13, it was nice to have contact with those who had been allies at one point. It made him feel they were almost friends or could be the more time he spent with them. Sometimes they joined him and Rukia for their mending and conversation nights, and he was content to use those times to really examine how he felt about Rukia as opposed to the rest of the Gotei 13.

And he had to admit to himself, after a time, that what he felt for Rukia was...more. He had trouble defining it as love, as he had no experience with love when he was in the world of the living, but it was more than friendly, he knew that. She was vastly more important to him than anyone in Soul Society, aside from maybe the children she taught. They had wormed their way into his heart and settled there, giving him a reason and a purpose to stay in the Kuchiki household.

One night when it was just him and Rukia, with the lamplight was high to make sure they could see their stitches, he took the opportunity to study her face. He had grown in the three years that they had not seen each other, grown taller and gotten more muscle and changed the style of his hair, but Rukia had simply grown more lovely. Her hair was longer and she wore it at a knot at the base of her neck, and she had gotten taller and more...developed. He felt warm at that thought, as he wanted to not have those type of thoughts, but she had grown up and grown more lovely and he had been surprised Abrari-san had not made any advances towards her.

“You look troubled.”

“Rukia’s voice broke through his thoughts, and when he looked up at her she had an amused look on her face. She pointed to the garment he was mending and he saw his stitches had become sloppy. He went and undid the stitches, his face warming more. “No. I am simply distracted.”

“Ah.” She set aside her mending and reached over to touch his hand. His skin tingled under her touch and yes, yes, he realized that he had those same “fond feelings” for Rukia that Captain Hitsugaya seemed to have for Karin-kun. “Tell me what is on your mind.”

He felt embarrassed to even speak of it. Had his life been so empty of love that the mere thought of admitting he had fond feelings towards her sent him into a petrified state? But her hand curled to hold his hand and after a moment he held her hand and sat there in silence for a moment. “You are important to me,” he finally said.

“And you are important to me, too, Uryuu,” she said, squeezing his hand.

“And I have...fond feelings...towards you,” he said quietly. He can’t look at her, keeping his eyes focused on their joined hands. He could hear her move closer, and then he felt her lean her head on his shoulder. He relaxed, and they sat in silence like that for some time before she spoke again.

“I have fond feelings for you too,” she said quietly. “Will you...will you stay here and we can see where these feelings go?”

He nodded. She lifted her head up and he turned to face her, and she leaned in and kissed him softly. He was surprised, but he kissed her back, gently, softly. He wasn’t sure how he would maneuver these feelings he had, but the fact she felt the same...well, that gave him hope that, perhaps, life in Soul Society would not be so bad. Not with Rukia by his side.
