"...AND BY SLOW ARTS OF CRUELTY WERE CORRUPTED AND ENSLAVED; AND THUS DID MELKOR BREED THE HIDEOUS RACE OF THE ORCS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the many different types of orcs and orc makeup effects by Weta Workshop, all orc makeup iterations featured here can be found in Peter Jackson's first installment of the "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001). New Line Cinema.
"But of those unhappy ones who were ensnared by Melkor little is known of a certainty... Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressëa, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in eny and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar... And deep in their dark hearts the Orcs loathed the Master whom they served in fear, the maker only of their misery..."
-- "The Silmarillion," "Quenta Silmarillion, III -- Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor," written by J.R.R. Tolkien

From the sketch-heap: book-accurate Uglúk, captain of the Uruk-Hai. "There were four goblin-soldiers of greater stature, swart, slant-eyed, with thick legs and large hands. They were armed with short broad-bladed swords, not with the curved scimitars usual with Orcs; and they had bows of yew, in length and shape like the bows of Men. Upon their shields they bore a strange device: a small white hand in the centre of a black field; on the front of their iron helms was set an S-rune, wrought of some white metal." (LOTR, The Departure of Boromir)
"We are the fighting Uruk-Hai! We slew the great warrior. We took the prisoners. We are the servants of Saruman the Wise, the White Hand: the hand that gives us man's-flesh to eat. We came out of Isengard, and led you here, and we shall lead you back by the way we choose. I am Uglúk. I have spoken." (LOTR, The Uruk-Hai)
Jackson's films are gorgeous, but they take some liberties in the look of Middle-Earth and its' denizens; chiefly, in their material culture. The Weta team settled in on a lot of arms and armours from the late middle ages and renaissance- plate armour, sallets, crossbows, German longswords- but Tolkien drew his inspiration from late antiquity and the earlier middle ages; the time of myths like the Nibelungenlied, Beowulf, the Norse sagas, and the history of figures like Attila, Justinian, Theodoric, and so on, which heavily inform the content of his stories. It's all mail, all the time! I've given Uglúk's gear a rather Roman cast owing to that short, broad sword bit; his helmet is a late Roman "intercisa" type, simple and suited for mass-production, adorned with a Cirth-rune S. I'm a bit torn between gladius types, straight and leaf, and the rather exciting, potent cutter that is the Congolese Ikakalaka. I'm not completely satisfied with those shields, yet, but I like the idea of letters and numerals added to differentiate units and track personnel. Arguably, someone carrying a substantial warbow should restrict themselves to an easily-carried buckler. If you're wondering about how he's carrying his arrows, it's an in-battle method used by English longbowmen; as you twist your body to one side, the become easily reached.

Sorry but it´s hilarious to me that orcs are seen as dumb but in the Isengard scene they literally
Chop down trees, burn trees, create fuel
Make decent weapons
Make decent armor
Birth new orcs from mud I guess Saruman's got a bang pit somewhere
Learn to speak the common tongue
Become strong fighters
Learn to use a sword, shield, bow and arrow
Operate machinery including a trebuchet and heavy doors
Learn how to train and ride wargs
Mind you THESE CREATURES ARE JUST BORN LMAO
If you started an orc school they'd be geniuses

Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life. And now... perfected. Motherfucking Uruk-Hai.
Whom do you serve?

These are all very old, but they still hold up pretty well, unlike most of my older stuff
The Witch-King, Durin (maybe VI), and a captain of Isengard
The WK's helmet/crown is sort of based off Tolkien's sketch of the crown of Gondor and some designs I drew up for some regular Gondorian helms He's dressed in a full-body outfit that's held to his body by leather straps, it's hard to make well-fitting clothes for him since his measurements are a biiiiit tricky to take Neither of his hands are good, his left especially (which is why it's subtly cropped out of frame), otherwise there's nothing here that I think is tooo clumsy Designwise there's not much I'd change, I'd just remove the spike from his helmet (I remembered immediately after I drew it that he wears his hood over it), add some more weapons and stuff to his belt, and decorate his armour a bit (i have a different design for him as the ruler of angmar that's much fancier and i reeeeeally wanna draw that again now, so stay tuned for that)
Durin's crown is based on the design on the West-gate of Moria, just fancied up a bit His shield is based on one from Tolkien's drawing of Smaug, but he really deserves a prettier one :P I thought a hammer would be a cool, it's ceremonial and made of gold, silver, and pearl I think his design and the drawing holds up basically to how I'd do it today, though the mail's a little too dark (oh and I wouldn't give him the chausses, since I mostly tie those to Dáin and the dwarves of the Iron Hills)
The Uruk is still really really good from every aspect to me The feathers in his helmet mark him as a captain, worn in a plume like Men wear them, and they're eagle feathers that he bullied out of some mountain Orcs for some extra flair The cape is just for decoration, unlike in Mordor where it denotes status Same goes for the fur over his shoulders He could use a shield and some other equipment I guess, but otherwise there's not really anything I'd change about him!!
(yeah pretty much every single one of my older drawings is in the same pose from the exact same angle, it was a hard habit to break XP)

blorbo from mr. bilbo's stories
Probably one of my favorite random things about LotR is the fact that
a) Pippin did a Gollum impression in the books
b) Pippin had never MET Gollum before that point and never would
c) yet it was an ACCURATE impression, as it startled and was recognized by the orc he was speaking to
d) the only possible explanation for Pippin Took’s accurate Gollum impression is this: Bilbo, while telling stories to the eager children, must have imitated Gollum perfectly
