Isabel II and Her General Staff, on Horseback
Artist: Charles Porion (French, 1814-1884)
Date: c. 1862
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain
Description
This large-format group portrait is an ideal representation of the General Staff of the Spanish Army. In the centre of the composition Queen Isabel II, dressed in the uniform of captain general, wearing the Golden Fleece around her neck and the band of the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III with its scallop shell across her chest; on her chest and under her lapel two other Grand Crosses can be seen, that of Charles III and Isabel la Católica (Project cataloguing heraldic and phaleristic elements, Royal Academy of Heraldry and Genealogy of Madrid).
The queen heads the cavalcade accompanied by her husband Francisco de Asís de Borbón y Borbón Dos Sicilias , also dressed as a captain general, and by Francisco de Paula , infante of Spain . Accompanying the young queen, Porion portrays some of the military men who took part in the final days of Isabel II 's government: Narváez, O'Donell and Prim, who appear prominently alongside other generals who had already died at the time the work was created, such as Digo de León and Palafox.

In the middle of Valancy Stirling's fourteenth year, a great excitement came to Deerwood. Valancy heard the news from Cousin Olive, who had heard from her parents. Olive pulled Valancy aside after school one day and told her with great importance, "Have you heard? A Princess is coming to live here!" Sara Crewe meets Valancy Stirling.
Click the link or read chapter one below. Please be advised that this chapter contains a great deal of canon-typical Stirling Clan Behavior.
In the middle of Valancy Stirling's fourteenth year, a great excitement came to Deerwood. Later, after the commotion died down, no one could say who had first learned of the news. Among the Stirling Clan, everybody knew that Uncle Benjamin had heard the news first, and relayed it to Cousin Gladys when she came by the store for Redfern’s Purple Pills. Cousin Gladys had then told Aunt Mildred, whom she had had for tea that afternoon. Aunt Mildred had told Aunt Wellington, who had told Uncle Wellington and Aunt Isabel. The latter had made sure that the rest of the clan was duly informed, although she maintained that it would have been much more efficient if Uncle Benjamin had thought to tell her first to begin with. But when it came to how Uncle Benjamin had originally come by the news, suddenly everyone's memories seemed to fail and no one could quite say how it had happened.
Valancy herself heard the news from Cousin Olive, who had heard from her parents. Olive pulled Valancy aside after school one day and told her with great importance, "Have you heard? A Princess is coming to live here!"
Valancy, of course, had been a princess herself for years, safe in the walls of her Blue Castle, but a real life princess was a very different matter. She very nearly gaped at Cousin Olive, who wore a small smile of benevolent triumph at being the one who catch Valancy in so unladylike an expression. "Why?" Valancy managed after a moment. Deerwood, with its prim, well-kept, ugly streets and its well brought up, deathly dull inhabitants, seemed the last place any princess would want to set eyes on. Valancy could hardly believe that someone like that would come to live in Deerwood.
Olive did not seem to care about this vital matter, and she waved Valancy's question away with an airy, "Why not?" While Valancy was still trying to find a response, Olive started on her true reason for confiding in Valancy. "She's going to need an entourage," Olive said. She pronounced entourage as it was spelled. "She'll come with servants, of course, but she'll need some companions of her own stature."
Valancy privately thought that Olive was presuming a great deal, saying that the Stirling Clan was of the same stature as a real princess. For, of course, that was what Olive had wanted to discuss: whether she, Olive, would be one of the chosen ones. Valancy felt this a foregone conclusion. Of course Olive would be one of the princess' friends. Olive was the prettiest girl in school, and Uncle Wellington had married money so Olive always went around in pretty new clothes that set off her looks. Olive spoke charmingly and moved gracefully (although she was heavy on her feet, Valancy thought rebelliously) and she even cried prettily when she was upset. Olive could have been a princess herself, if she hadn't been born a Stirling.
That night at supper, Valancy timidly mentioned the grand news when her mother perfunctorily asked her how school had been. Mrs. Fredrick Stirling did not care how school had been, but she always asked, in case Valancy had sins or misdemeanors to confess. It was a gift, Mrs. Stirling felt, to allow Doss the opportunity to freely confess her misdeeds and practice humility, and Mrs. Stirling found it quite ungrateful how rarely Doss availed herself of this opportunity.
Mrs. Stirling and Cousin Stickles had, of course, already heard the news, and had, in fact, passed much of the afternoon discussing the affair with Uncle Benjamin. As such, Mrs. Stirling felt no compunction in rebuking Valancy for gossiping. "A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much," she said severely, and Valancy shrank in her seat. "And sit up straight," Mrs. Fredrick added. Valancy sat up straight and stayed quiet for the rest of supper. After supper, the three retired to their handwork, and Valancy reluctantly set to work piecing her latest quilt. It was a hideous piece, she thought, eyeing the dull brown wool, made of the offcuts of fabric no one had wanted to begin with. Her mother had bought it at a reduced price, after Uncle Benjamin couldn't sell the entire shipment, and had decreed that Providence provided and insisted that Valancy should wear only that wool until they had used up the last scrap. Those scraps were now Valancy's task, and she stabbed her needle into the work with uncharacteristically deep resentment. The princess surely did not have to spend her evenings slaving away at unneeded quilts. Indeed, Valancy knew she did not, because Valancy herself never had to piece quilts in the Blue Castle. She wrote letters to her friends and her beau (Valancy did not dare even think the word lover in the presence of Mrs. Fredrick Stirling), or danced late into the night, or went for long adventures in the woods surrounding the castle grounds.
At last, it came time to retire. Valancy set her quilt aside and said her goodnights to Mrs. Fredrick and Cousin Stickles, then made her way to her room with undue haste that she knew would be remarked upon come morning. She couldn't help it. She had a pressing appointment in the Blue Castle. After all, royalty was coming to Deerwood, and it was only fair that the Blue Castle be put in order to receive it.
***
Over the coming weeks, no one seemed able to talk of anything but the princess' arrival. No one knew when she was meant to appear, but a few days after the initial rumor, word flew through town that the grandest house in Deerwood was being prepared to receive her. The house belonged to Mr. Charles Clydesdale, a reclusive old man with no children. Everyone knew he had inherited a fortune and lost everything but the house, although no one could agree on quite how. A bad business venture, the men speculated at dinner parties and in mixed company. Gambling and liquor, those same men said with conviction when all the ladies were out of earshot. A love affair gone wrong, the ladies said knowingly when the men were not around to hear. Some terrible crime, the children told each other gleefully, hoping there were no grownups around to scold them for gossiping.
Regardless of how it had happened, those were the facts. Mr. Charles Clydesdale lived alone in his grand, crumbling house and spoke to no one. He had no packages delivered and only ever left his home to go to church. He had one servant to keep his house, an old maid of fifty or sixty who did his shopping and refused to answer any questions about her employer, no matter how persistently she was plied with questions or sly compliments. Valancy had been terribly afraid of him as a child, and felt sure that the darkest, most terrible of the rumors must be true. As she grew, however, she found herself thinking more than once that it must be lonely, living all alone like that with no one for company but a mean old cook. Two years ago, when the word went round that he was suffering from a terrible pain and Dr. Trent was making house calls twice a month, Valancy had once included him in her prayers. For this she had been soundly scolded -- adding someone new into her prayers without first asking permission to do was disrespectful of Providence and Mrs. Fredrick Stirling, and tantamount to blasphemy -- but although Valancy cried bitter tears at her disgrace, she found she could not regret the gesture itself.
It was this man who was rumored to be hosting the princess. Uncle James initially dismissed this as utter rubbish, nonsense invented by people with too much time and not enough work to do -- he looked straight at Valancy as he spoke, even though she was diligently working on her darning and had not set her needle down once all evening -- but as the days went on packages began arriving at Mr. Charles Clydesdale's door and it became impossible to deny that something momentous was afoot.
Valancy herself was the first to bring home the next piece of news, although credit would later be given to Cousin Georgiana who had learned the news later in the day and quite innocently reported it to the greater clan, unaware that Valancy had already told Mrs. Stirling and Cousin Stickles. The princess, it turned out, was named Miss Crewe, and she was coming from London. Valancy had happened to spot the name on a package at the post office while she was inquiring after her post, and she had gotten up the courage to ask Mr. Carewe about it. "That's the new missus who's coming to town," Mr. Carewe had said affably. "Here's your post, Miss Valancy." He handed Valancy a copy of the Christian Times and a letter addressed to Cousin Stickles. Valancy, certain that no one else in her household would have heard this news, practically flew home.
"Crewe, eh?" Cousin Stickles said, after reading her letter and tossing it aside. "'S not the name of any Princess I've ever heard of."
"I'm sure it's just an overblown story," Mrs. Fredrick said haughtily. She disliked all this fuss being made of a stranger, and one who wasn't even here at that. "She's likely just some woman who puts on airs."
"She must be terribly important, to be getting so much mail already," Valancy ventured.
"Anyone can get mail," pronounced Mrs. Fredrick, who seldom received any herself and had as such determined that anyone who did had too high an opinion of their own importance. "Just sign up for some horrid subscriptions and your box will be cluttered with post from now until eternity."
"This was a package, not a magazine," Valancy pointed out, emboldened by the fact that, for once, she had first-hand knowledge of what was being discussed. "There aren't subscriptions for those."
"It's very unbecoming of a lady to look at other people's mail," Mrs. Stirling said sharply. She disliked being corrected, and felt that the least her own child could do was refrain from doing so.
"I just happened to be at the post office at the same time," Valancy objected. "I wasn't looking at it."
"Don't take that tone with me," Mrs. Stirling snapped. "It's to bed without supper tonight for you, and if you argue with me again it'll be the same tomorrow."
Valancy lowered her gaze. "I'm sorry," she said.
"What was that? Speak clearly."
"I said I'm sorry," Valancy repeated, and Mrs. Stirling nodded.
"Good," she said. To Cousin Stickles she said, "What is it that Mildred wrote to you?" It was clear that the subject of Miss Crewe was off limits for the rest of the evening. Valancy worked at her knitting in silence and, when Mrs. Fredrick and Cousin Sickles went to supper, retreated to her room.
"I wasn't looking on purpose," she said aloud, in the safety of her room, her tone petulant. It was on that night that she began harboring a secret, entirely undeserved resentment of Miss Crewe.
***
Miss Crewe finally arrived on a blustery November day. Valancy was home with a cold, and Mrs. Stirling had decreed the week before that there would be no more talk of the girl under her roof, so no one in the brick house on Elm Street heard that she had arrived until church that Sunday. Valancy had started to improve, but she was still coughing a great deal, and so it was decided that Cousin Stickles would stay home with her and Mrs. Fredrick Stirling would make their excuses to Dr. Stalling after the service. Cousin Stickles sat her in the parlor where it was warm and rubbed Redfern's liniment on Valancy's chest, although it never did anything but make Valancy cough harder until the smell dissipated.
After church, Mrs. Stirling returned with Aunt Wellington and Cousin Georgiana, who were taking tea with Mrs. Stirling and Cousin Stickles. Cousin Georgiana often visited when Valancy was ill -- to see how close she was to death, Valancy had once thought, when she was deep into a bronchitis and too miserable to control her thoughts -- and Aunt Wellington made a habit of stopping in as Valancy recovered, to check on her condition. Olive never visited when Valancy was sick.
It had long since been decreed that Valancy was to speak as little as possible during her colds, as too much exertion of the lungs could cause the sickness to settle in deeper. So she sat in the parlor and listened as the adults talked, interjecting only to cough or, for variety, let out the occasional sneeze. It was under these conditions that Valancy finally heard the news: the princess herself, Miss Crewe, had attended church that morning.
"At least she's a proper Anglican," Cousin Stickles said. "That's a relief for you, I'm sure." This was addressed to Aunt Wellington. It had long been taken as fact within the clan that of course Olive would become friends with Miss Crewe when she arrived, and so it was indeed fortunate that there would be no need for Olive to besmirch her reputation by befriending a Presbyterian, or worse, a Methodist.
Aunt Wellington nodded.
"She had such a pretty air about her," Cousin Georgiana said. "Somber and polite, as though she was thinking of all the good folks who have passed through the church and heard the word of Providence before us."
"She wasn't alone, surely," Cousin Stickles said.
"Certainly not," Aunt Wellington said. "She had a gentleman with her -- her guardian, Dr. Stalling told us -- and a companion. Quite a plain girl, if I may say, but I suppose you wouldn't want a girl like that to outshine you." It was very clear in her tone just what kind of girl Aunt Wellington meant. Stirling women did not become servants, not even to princesses.
"Miss Crewe herself is quite queer looking," Cousin Georgiana put in. "Not pretty, exactly, but she catches the eye."
This caught Valancy's interest. She had always assumed that Miss Crewe would be beautiful, with golden hair and shining eyes. "What does she look like?" she couldn't help but ask. Mrs. Stirling and Aunt Wellington both looked at her severely, while Cousin Stickles put a hand over her mouth and reminded her that she did not want her cold to turn into pneumonia again this year. Properly chastised, Valancy fell quiet once more and, although the conversation remained on Miss Crewe for the rest of the afternoon, she never once got an answer to her question.
It would not be until the following day when, finally deemed well enough to return to school, Valancy got her first glimpse of the fabled Miss Crewe.

Steal the Queen
Warnings: female reader, fluff, loveless marriage, implied infidelity
Characters: Levi Ackerman, Isabel Magnolia
Prompt: Marleyan Warrior // Royal AU
Author's Note: And this is late again gdbjds. Yesterday was a Time. One of our dogs is very injured (he'll be okay) but now I have to clean his wounds and he is very very dramatic
You hadn't expected your life to go the way it had. Sure, you were the queen of the realm and you were raised to be prim and proper, polite even. You were raised to sit on the throne, to rule over the people but only in theory. No, the one you were wed to was meant to rule over everyone and he did. You couldn't even say that he was a bad king, just as proper and polite as you were, but there was nothing you felt for him. Your King wasn't even someone you felt was a friend, when you both only played the part of the "happy married pair" in front of nobles and commoners, it was hard to feel a thing for him.
None of that was unexpected, it was just as planned. Be raised to know every detail of life as a queen? Check. Marry into the Royal family? Check. Maintain a pretty picture of love? Check. Remain in a loveless marriage for your family's sake? Check, check, check. You weren't fond of it, existing only to sit there and look pretty beside him. It was when life went off the rails that you finally felt alive for the first time. It was when you met him.
He was a common thief, you knew there was nothing that should've drawn you in. Especially when you woke in the middle of the night, hearing someone rummage around in your bedroom. Your eyes met wide, brown eyes. You blinked once, opening your mouth to scream for the guards. A hand clamped around your mouth from behind you.
"Quiet." The voice growled.
"Sorry, Levi bro." The girl muttered, "She was asleep so-"
"Quiet." He repeated.
You simply sat there, heart beating against your ribcage. You would not risk your life, merely watching as this younger girl rummaged through your closet. More than anything, you were annoyed. Annoyed that this wasn't over and done with, annoyed that your husband was probably with his mistress and that's why you were the only one in this bed, and annoyed that you had so many responsibilities and almost no actual time to manage anything else. No, instead you had to handle far too much for your husband. Your King.
"I'm going to let go. Do not scream." The man, Levi, stated.
You nodded as best you could, he removed his hand from your face and stared at the girl. "Isabel, just find something." He scoffed.
"She won't." You finally stated, "But I can tell you where if you'll steal me, too."
You had barely processed the words that tumbled out of your mouth. The moon illuminating your facial features as Levi and the girl stared at you with wide eyes. Albeit, Levi's looked distinctly less so. You stared at him in particular, refusing to take back your request.
"Why would I do that?" Levi questioned.
"Levi bro! We can't do that!" Isabel whined.
"Because, I can tell you how exactly to sneak back out. Better yet, I can lead you out past all the guards myself." You explained, "And... Because haven't you ever wanted freedom?"
Levi paused, you could see how he considered your offer. You smiled sweetly when Levi finally gave you a nod, "Fine, yeah. I'm not calling you queen or some bullshit. We do this, you're a commoner like us."
"I wouldn't have it any other way." You whispered, finally standing.
Since that day, you had not left his side. Even when he became a knight of a nearby kingdom, Paradis, you remained there. You refused to ever leave his side again. Queen or not, you enjoyed the freedom you had as a commoner versus the wife of some big shot in Marley.

Chenford 5x20
Overall, I'm very happy with the storyline from this episode!
We left off with Tim telling Lucy he'll be fine with her being UC but from his face he's clearly not okay. I love that we're left on a kind of open-ended situation that will continue to be explored.
I'm glad Lucy finally brought up this conversation with him and was honest.
Tim wasn't honest with her, or perhaps - with himself. But that's understandable because he doesn't want to be the reason she doesn't choose something she loves and he doesn't want her to grow to regret him.
Lucy needs to decide for herself if she's going to be UC or not. It shouldn't come from outside factors such as Prim or being recognized from TV. And yes, she's heard the warnings from Nyla and now Isabel but they were both still encouraging to her and telling her that she could still do it and not be like them.
So I think she needs to go undercover for a long period of time and decide for herself if it's the right decision for her or not. It does seem to contradict her saying she wants to have kids soon but I guess she still needs to figure stuff out.
And of course Tim and her relationship should figure into her decision but Tim wasn't honest with her about his feelings, so it's complicated and I'm excited that they're going to continue to explore it over the next episode or two.
I loved Lucy's conversation with Isabel and the depth they gave to Isabel and her backstory, and of course I loved that Tim told Isabel Lucy is different.
I found it a little odd that in the beginning they were making it seem like Isabel was more of a threat just because she was his ex-wife and single, and they had Tamara looking into her but then kinda disappear...and she and Tim didn't really have an end scene giving closure. But honestly, I don't think she's a threat other than the fact that she's a reminder of what could happen when you go UC.
The comment about meditation bothered me, not because of how it related to Lucy, but because we know Tim does meditate! Or at least he knows the value of it, which we saw in season 3 with Katie. Maybe he actually does meditate and he's embarrassed to tell Isabel that he's "soft" now? Idk lol.
As for the other storylines, STR is not really my thing, the Bailey storyline was completely not connected to anything else and not needed in my opinion, and the Angela storyline, I wish had been a little more about her solving a case. I'm still not clear if she did all that pregnancy stuff in the interrogation on purpose. Also I wonder if she's not going to be in the next two episodes?
Overall I thought it was a really strong chenford episode and I really like the complexity of where things left off and I'm excited to see what happens next! I may or may not have a UC fic I've been working on that canon has still not completely made irrelevant so maybe I'll finally finish it...

City of Bones: Epilogue
please see the masterlist for notes about this series/collection of works
-
Clary looked at herself in the mirror in the elevator in the Institute. The doors shut behind her with a quiet creak. Most of her bruises and scrapes had faded to invisibility. She wondered if Jace had ever seen her looking as prim as she did today—she’d dressed for the hospital in a black pleated skirt, pink lip gloss, and a vintage sailor-collared blouse. She thought she looked about eight.
Not that it mattered what Jace thought about how she looked, she reminded herself, now or ever. She wondered if they’d ever be the way Simon was with his sister: a mixture of boredom and loving irritation. She couldn’t imagine it.
She heard the loud meows before the elevator door even opened. “Hey, Church,” she said, kneeling down by the wriggling gray ball on the floor. “Where is everyone?”
Church, who clearly wanted his stomach rubbed, muttered ominously. With a sigh, Clary gave in. “Demented cat,” she said, rubbing with vigor.
She heard a door click shut behind her and a familiar voice sound from a few feet away. “He’s not all bad. Though I’ll never forgive him for the time I was looking for Alec after I went on a solo mission at fourteen and he brought me to Hodge.”
She stood and turned to see Rowan leaning against the wall. They looked better than the last time she’d seen them—then again, that was in the back of Eric’s car, almost bleeding out from a giant gash in their hip, clothes torn and bloodied. Now, they stood clad in sweatpants and a plain black tanktop with a slouchy, worn-out sweater hanging off their one shoulder. The sweater was undoubtedly Alec’s in the way it was entirely too big for them. Their hair looked like they’d just woken up from a nap but they clearly didn’t look rested. She didn’t think she’d ever seen them look rested. Always tired.
“How’s your hip?” she asked gently, not wanting to pry. They seemed like they always had an issue with her, but she wasn’t sure what she did that made them dislike her so much. She chalked up Alec and Isabelle’s initial reaction to her as being the new person, but Rowan had been outright hostile without provocation in the beginning. More so than Alec and Isabelle combined.
They shrugged. “It’s better. Lots of rest for Alec and I. Isabelle’s being all mother-hen about it. I’m barely allowed to move and I didn’t even break anything.”
She smiled at them. “Glad to know you’re both healing. It’s, ah…” she paused, trying to think about how to phrase the next thing she wanted to say. They didn’t like her—she acknowledged that. And it was weird to get sentimental with someone that didn’t like you. She forced up the courage, anyway. “Thank you,” she said slowly, almost apprehensive. “You didn’t…have to take that hit for me. But you did.”
She was almost annoyed that they rolled their eyes, but she figured that was how they dealt with sincerity. Letting it roll off their back like nothing hurt them—it seemed to be a common thread among the shadowhunters she knew.
“Don’t worry about it. Any friend of Jace’s, right?” they asked, but she could tell they didn’t mean what they said. She was determined to figure out why they’d do such a thing for someone they only met two weeks ago and seemed to hate but now wasn’t the appropriate time for all that.
“What’s your deal with him, anyway?” she asked, voice much lighter. She was just curious—they seemed to have some feud that no one wanted to talk about. “You two get into a fight or something?”
They laughed. Really laughed. Even Alec made jokes when he was nervous, but they’d never seen Rowan look relaxed enough to find anything funny. They were much more stoic than he was. “Ask Izzy. She’ll give you the details. Long story.”
“Clary!”
It was Isabelle, swooping into the foyer in a long red skirt, her hair piled on top of her head with jeweled clips. “It’s great to see you!”
Rowan scoffed. “Speak of the devil and she shall appear.”
Isabelle shot a half-hearted glare over her shoulder at Rowan, who threw their hands in the air in surrender and stalked off with a slight limp. She did hope they healed okay after quite literally saving her life.

Since when do you like THG/TBOSAS? Tell me your fandom story 😊
Have you read or watched all the books/movies?
Thank you.
@curiousnonny
Okay so I answered a similar version of this question last year here so I just copied my answer over and put it under a cut because it's LonG but it's still the story!
Okay, I have been waiting to do this justice. But here I go.
I was one of those fans back in the day. I think I started reading the books in 2009/early 2010s. THG and CF were out, and I was literally counting down the days with my mom and aunt to Mockingjay being released. I was 12 at the time, in 7th grade. I got into the series at the age of the youngest tributes, at the age of Rue and Prim. My mom and my aunt recommended it to me, and I remember falling in love. District 12 was my hometown. An old coal down surrounded by the woods, I remember just identifying so much with that. I was little. Me and my mom got Mockingjay the day it released and I read it within a day. I was hooked.
I counted down to the movie. I remember every announcement. All the fan casts, the fan versions of Katniss' song. The buildup as to oh who's going to be Katniss! Who's going to be Peeta! What does Cinna's eye makeup look like. The clothes, I could NOT wait to see the clothes. The girl on fire dress. All of that. I remember finding out while sitting in my aunt's bedroom about it being Jennifer Lawrence. I remember the fan casts of Dianna Aaron as Madge Undersee (RIP). I can literally remember the feelings of cast releases. I bought every merch item that came out. I had a blanket, I had district 2 nail polish that looked like cement, I had the girl on fire 12 nail polish. I remember learning how to do the braid and it becoming my personality for an entire year. I publicly counted down to this movie release. My grandma made me a custom Team Peeta shirt that I rhinestoned for the premier. My best friend and I went to the movie at midnight with my Grandma. We went to them all, and she and I will be going to the newest one this November. I was 14, turning 15, and insufferable.
The Hunger Games defined me. I thought I was Katniss. I did that braid. My baby sister was 4 years younger than me. When CF released in theaters, I was the age of Katniss and she was Prim's age from the OG movie. That relationship of love between sisters is the most relatable part of the entire franchise. To this day, my sister reminds me of Prim. She is sweet and gentle and smart and innocent. And I would do anything Katniss did to protect her sister.
I got very into Clove for reasons unknown. Maybe because Isabelle Fuhrman and I were the same age. Maybe because I remember clove in the books being described as dark hair and dark eyes with freckles. thats what I sort of looked like back then. I'm 5'3, was never very tall. There is still hunger games fanfic I wrote in 2014 floating around out there of Katniss/Peeta and also Clato obviously.
To this day when I go into surgery, I have my hair in those little training ponytails Clove wore, because it keeps my bangs out of my face.
I distinctly remember wanting to be a blonde when I was 13/14. In 8th grade I kept dying my hair lighter with highlights. But about a month before the movie, I dyed my hair back to the dark natural brown. The way home from that appointment my mom pointed out to me "Maybe the hunger games, and Katniss, showed you that you can be pretty with dark hair and you don't have to change that." That has stuck with me for 11 years.
I fell out of it naturally, as I went through HS and College. I went to all the movies at midnight, but still, I was growing up and growing out by the last Mockingjay movie. Even in HS, for golf and dance I braided my hair out of the way. I did hunger games themed dance solos at competitions. Eventually, I did fall out of it as I got closer to college.
But like all things, you find your way back home.
It's been..14.. years since I read those books.
I still do my hair like Clove, but now as an almost doctor/future surgeon.
I still think of my home town as District 12 adjacent.
I still recognize the love of Katniss and Prim as the most important love and relationship in the whole series.
My type is still tall blonde boys with blue eyes (which..I got from THG movie).
I'll be at the midnight premiere of this movie with my best friend, like I did all before.
Recently I saw the movies on prime. I cried watching mockingjay part 2 because that was still so much like me and my sister. I watched again and I mourned the reality of what my favorite series EVER was.
This is a series about children fighting to the death. The horrors of fascism and the government. About actual war. The social commentary (The outrage of the capitol at the thought of Peeta and Katniss's fetus dying in the games, vs the reality of watching 23 children fight to the death every year and cheering is one of the most jarring and realistic reflections of society today). The media sensationalized THG to a love story just like the capitol. Looking back, from the age of Finnick in mockingjay, rather than Clove or Katniss in THG and CF, the way I see these films and this series is so different.
Thats what drew me back. Theres a comfort in this series, it was my favorite thing.
Theres a comfort I want back, in the most stressful season of my life.
But there is so much for me to uncover and unpack as an adult that I missed as a child.
It feels like I am doing a service to my younger self.
thank you for asking and thank you for giving me space to gush.

Lari and Belois observation from Ch 89 (thoughts/spoilers)
As many times as I re-read the available chapters and novel, i just noticed that
While it’s pretty clear that Lari considered herself a puppet to House Belois in TL1, Lehan remained a puppet for TL1 and most of TL2, it never occurred to me that when Lari described trying to be a “perfect, ideal noble lady” in TL1, that she was actively being groomed by the Belois to be the perfect wife for Lehan.
All we got is the beginning chapters and a few splattering of text in the story that said that Lari never expected to marry for love, was content with marrying some nice man and starting a family for the sake of bringing pride to House Belois - and she worked hard to earn her father’s approval (under his watchful eye). She suppressed her desire for fancy clothes and decorations, opting to wear simple ribbons and dark clothes that House Belois would often wear. She was seen, never heard. She never argued, spoke back, or voiced her opinion. She always acted prim and proper. She spent all 18 years in TL1 mastering etiquette because it’s what made her parents happy. In Vol 6, after Lari announces that she chooses Rupert over House Belois, the Count throws a rather embarrassing hissy fit, and shouts that after all he did for Lari, how dare she choose him and ruin the legitimacy of Vellnenli with Rupert’s low blood”. At that time, Lari realizes another forgotten memory. All she did in TL1 was meaningless - All the effort she used to “become the perfect lady” - including suppressing true self - all the praised she earned was the Count telling her “as expected as a high-born, of course you are able to do all this”. He never congratulated her for herself. He had only cared about her bloodline.
They had basically groomed her in TL1 to be that ideal lady, to pair up with Lehan, who had loved her since a young age. Of course, the expectation was that TL1 would accept since she was never close to lehan and she would understand that they adopted her for a noble purpose, so she would marry lehan and learn to love him and start a family with him.
Of course it’s only speculation on how TL1 would have turned out if they lived, but definitely in TL2 Lari broke free from that grooming and completely rejected it. There’s so much dialogue about how Lari was defying her parents, how she feels guilt for it, how they’re shocked when they see her touch or bicker with Rupert (going against decorum), that TL2 to them is a completely different person. Because she is. While she was very immature in TL1, hidden away, ignorant in a cage, in TL2 she’s been able to live her life, mature, and change, and become her own person. While they groomed her into an ideal version of “Isabelle”, now while she’s at the palace, she’s finally able to grow and chooses to obtain her own happiness as “Lariette”. :)
