Rewatched Amateur tonight and holy shit, I love Trust but, while I did spend some time thinking that might be my favourite Hartley film... nah I can't deny the raw undiluted autistic/sex favourable energy Isabelle and Thomas give off. These two people are the horniest mfs in existence that never had sex with one another, and despite the fact that they don't talk like real people at all they are somehow perversely, achingly human.

"How can you be a nymphomaniac if you've never had sex?" "I'm choosy."

And with that, folks, Hal Hartley casually brings about my ace awakening. Isabelle is iconic, and if this movie was made today she would get the recognition she deserves as a character, but alas too many remain unaware. Writing erotic novels at her local coffee shop that dovetail into maudlin poetry? Believing a rented pornographic VHS tape to be a sign from God and reaching out towards the flickering cathode ray tube screen in rapturous wonderment?

How can you not love this movie?
