Summary: you weren’t hiding your relationship but you and Iruka just never thought to tell others.

You sat at your desk lounging back in your chair, you had been waiting for your husband to finish his meeting with the hokage, you sighed and spun in your chair “wow, how long has it been since we’ve seen you act so childish” you stop and looked to the door to see Shikamaru standing with Kotetsu and Izumo, you chuckled and rolled your eyes.

“You fellas here for lord 7th?” You asked and Shikamaru hummed walking in and sitting across for you, the other two sat beside him. “What’re you doing here?” Kotetsu asked and you shrugged, “wasting my time, I suppose” you hummed relaxing back into your seat, Izumo nodded and looked as though he was lost in thought for a moment, “you haven’t been working for a while, why’s that?” He asked and you looked down at your lap for a moment.

Your stomach had just started to bulge from under your clothes but it was still able to be hidden with the right finessing, you and Iruka hadn’t planned for a baby but you were both excited for it, which is the reason why you’d mostly stopped working, now only looked after the really young children at the academy and did the simplest ’D ranked’ missions.

Nobody knew about your pregnancy and only your grandfather and Naruto knew about your marriage to Iruka, as both of you didn’t make it a big deal and didn’t want a large surprise, specially because you saved it for after the war and with so many people losing loved ones, it didn’t feel right throwing a celebration.

You looked back up at Izumo “yeah you’re right… well a lots happened, it’s just best I don’t work for awhile” you sighed and both Izumo and Kotetsu looked at you confused, however when you looked over at Shikamaru he had an almost knowing look on his face, “are you injured? It’s not serious is it?” Kotetsu stood up and Izumo looked at you concerned, this caused you to chuckle, they had always been like this even back in your days as genin on the same team. “Nah I’m not injured…” you stopped and thought for a moment, what harm would it cause if you told them. “…but it is serious” you smiled and watched at the two men went through a cycle of concern, relief, confusion and back to concern. While Shikamaru seemed to have gotten the confirmation he needed to be certain about his guess.

“What’s wrong… are you dying? Is your grandfather sick? Are leaving that village” the two asked questions simultaneously about the situation, “hey cut that out… how is she supposed to answer” you heard Shikamaru grumbled and watched as the other two men slumped back in their seats, waiting anxiously for your answer, “well it’s nothing bad… I guess I’m… well I’m…” you looked over at the door before looking back at the three men, despite the nervousness you felt, you smiled brightly “I’m pregnant” you chuckled and placed a hand over your stomach, there was a stunned silence from your old team mates, “congratulations, were you trying for a baby?” Shikamaru asked with a lazy smile and shook your head, “me and my husband wanted kids but we weren’t trying, we sort of let it happen” you explained and even shikamaru had a surprise look in his eyes at the mention of your husband, “I see… so you’re married, was it a private ceremony?” He asked and by this point Izumo and Kotetsu were foaming at the mouth from shock, “yeah it was, we married just after the war so it only felt right keeping it private, and we just never got around to telling everyone we’d gotten married” you smiled and Shikamaru nodded understanding your reasoning before he quickly pulled up the other two for their reaction to the news.

“Who was it…? Who’s taking our sweet girl from us” Izumo fake cried now finally coming to terms with everything, while Kotetsu nodded in agreement with him, “wow thanks dads, if you must know… I married Iruka… we had been together since we all participated in our Chūnin exam” you explained and they fell back into a state of shock, though you didn’t need to take anymore time to explain to them about your love-life as Iruka pointed his head into the room, “I’m done, are we leaving now?” He asked and you stood, nodding and walking over to him. As the both of you walked home you told him all about you interaction with the three men, you’d wonder if it was really that surprising the two of you were married and expecting, Iruka agreed that it wasn’t unexpected but understood how someone could be surprised, he’d told you he’d had lunch earlier that day with Naruto and told him about that pregnancy, you had wanted to keep it to yourself a little while longer but with how quickly you were growing it’d be to difficult soon.

Naruto didn’t care much for the sensei Team 7 had been assigned. The lateness was one thing—annoying, but bearable—but there was something shifty about him that raised all kinds of red flags in Naruto’s mind. The mask, the fake-ass eye-crinkle, the utter bullshit he’d spewed about his “likes, dislikes, and dreams.”

Naruto used to think anyone with a Konoha headband could be trusted—at least to an extent. Maybe they didn’t like him, because no one liked Naruto, and maybe they wouldn’t go out of their way to help him, but he used to think, at the very least, that Konoha shinobi were safe. Pretty stupidly trusting of him, in hindsight, but he’d never had reason to think otherwise.

Until Mizuki-sensei tricked him into stealing the scroll of forbidden jutsus, and then tried to kill him. It was a floodgate of bullshit coming out all at once, because he’d learned about the kyuubi, learned that was the reason most of the adults in the village couldn’t stand him—why people trashed his apartment and called him names in the street and refused to sell to him.

There was a pang of betrayal whenever he thought about the Hokage now, too. For so long, Hokage-Jiji was the only one Naruto could rely on, the only person he’d ever felt was looking out for him. Naruto couldn’t decide between being grateful, or feeling hurt—because it had never been about Naruto, but the kyuubi. And the Hokage had hidden so much from him, Naruto wasn’t sure if anything he said was true. Or if it was just more lies stacked on top of each other.

No, the only person in the world he knew he could trust without hesitation now was Iruka-sensei, because he had proved he was on Naruto’s side. Because you didn’t take a fuma shuriken to the back for someone you didn’t like at least a little.

But Hatake was an unknown, and that meant Naruto had to be careful.

So when Hatake ordered them all to share their own likes, dislikes, and dreams, Naruto rambled some nonsense that sounded enough like the truth that no one would call him on it, and enough of a lie that it couldn’t be used against him.

And when Hatake told them there would be a survival test in the morning, Naruto couldn’t help but think of Mizuki-sensei’s “special test” and felt some mix of exhaustion and dread and resignation sink into his bones.

Sasuke and Sakura left the moment Hatake dismissed them, but Naruto stayed behind. He could make himself anxious waiting for the other shoe to drop, or—

Or he could just do it himself.

“Are you going to try to kill me, too?” Naruto asked, blunt enough that it actually made Hatake rear back, actually made something like panic crack the otherwise impenetrable blank mask he’d been putting up the whole time.

“What?” he croaked out.

“Like that bastard, Mizuki. ‘Cause if you are, let’s just get it over with now. There’s no need to drag Sakura-chan or Sasuke-teme into it.”

Sasuke might be an arrogant jackass, and Sakura was as mean as she was pretty, but Naruto wouldn’t put either of them in danger. He wouldn’t let either of them get hurt just because they had the misfortune of being on the same team as him.

Naruto ignored the tremble of his hands by clenching them into fists, ignored the faint wobble of his lip by baring his teeth. He was a real shinobi now, and real shinobi weren’t afraid.

Except Hatake was a real shinobi—a jounin, even—and he had gone white as a ghost. “No. Naruto, no. I—fuck. No. I’m not going to—” He took a shuddering breath. “That’s not going to happen.”

Naruto just narrowed his eyes. Hatake sounded sincere—sounded shaken—but Naruto had been wrong about people before.

Still, there had been plenty of opportunity for him to attack, and he hadn’t taken it. Maybe Hatake was the type to play the long game? That seemed…like a huge waste of time, if Naruto was being honest, but he’d have to be vigilant, just in case.

“Sure,” Naruto said, relaxing a little, but not fully.

If anything, Hatake’s expression cracked further, but he nodded and, without another word, disappeared in a swirl of leaves.

Naruto waited to make sure he was truly alone before he slumped back down on the roof. So his new sensei was harder to read than anyone else Naruto had ever met. He sighed, throwing an arm over his eyes.

I’ll just have to get stronger, then.

the problem is Hokage Iruka fic has been in my drafts rotting away for so long I've found a kakairu fight I don't remember the context for, which is a shame bc i love conflict

this is tacked on after I wrote ab Gaara meeting Iruka in the hospital post sasuke retrieval, which really doesn't help explain what the purpose is supposed to be. but.

“Kakashi…” Iruka mutters quietly.

“You know it's true.”

Iruka tenses. His fists ball by his sides, shaking minutely as Iruka's jaw holds firm, keeping his tongue from lashing out.

“Hatake-san,” Iruka says sharply, “I don't know how to explain to you that your value isn't based on how other people regard you, on how they think you can benefit them.”

Kakashi looks away, “we're shinobi, Godamine-sama, you should know that's not true.”

Iruka scowls, “that's just being good at your job. I'm sure if you retire tomorrow and become a farmer, you'll be a fish out of water, just as good as a civilian child on their first day at the Academy.

That still does not equate your value! Your value is being alive, being able to make choices, decide things for yourself!”

“... I think you have a skewed sense of it.”

“There, exactly what I mean, deciding something for yourself.”

Kakashi snickers, and it's such a surprising sound, Iruka forgets where he is, what he's doing, for the whole duration of it, he's awestruck.

i keep thinking ab how konoha has gone through four hokages by boruto era. two of which in like what, four years. while suna has had gaara there for like two/three decades. gaara has known of five hokage's in his lifetime: hiruzen, tsunade, kakashi, naruto, shikamaru. not a very stable government if u ask me. danzo probably could have taken the hat easy peasy with the right propaganda.

this is just to say, Iruka being 5th hokage, he would have been there just as long as Gaara has been, only stepping down when naruto was ready for it, only in my sick twisted fantasies, Naruto would scratch his nose like Iruka does, "uh I've actually decided to become a teacher, like you," instantly filling Iruka with so much pride AND pain bc he was excited for retirement bc he never wanted this job to begin with
