GH: IRON MAN #171
There was a relatively brief period of time during which IRON MAN was a crackerjack reading experience. After more than a decade of mostly just floating along not being especially inspired, David Michelinie, John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton made the Armored Avenger into a real player. They put him up against more major threats, had him grapple with human foibles, and just made the whole of his…

Iron Man #208 (1986)
Iron Man #208 (1986)
Tumblr media
Tony Stark is understandably upset that AIM tricked him into building a space laser, but telling a war veteran like James Rhodes how to be a “man” feels pretty presumptuous.  Which is par for Tony’s character.
As Iron Man, he flies off to Boca Claliente, the island nation run by AIM,
His new armor has a “chameleon” mode that enables him to be invisible, and it’s visually drawn in a similar…

Iron Man #207 (1986)
Iron Man #207 (1986)
Tony Stark has been building a space station, and now AIM tricks him into putting a satellite into orbit that has a death ray. Also, AIM has taken over the island nation of Boca Caliente.
Iron Man destroys the evil satellite.
And that’s about it.  It’s hard to believe AIM can be allowed to live on an island after targeting the U.S. with a giant laser.

Iron Man #205 (1986)
Iron Man #205 (1986)
In this issue, Iron Man fights MODOK.  Now, MODOK was recently killed by the Serpent Squad—so how can he be back?
Easy!  He’s being run by remote control by AIM, who took possession of his corpse and has been using him as a laptop.  Seriously.  This was 1986, long before portable computers were a thing, so a giant, flying computer was still a useful appliance—even with a corpse rotting along…

Iron Man #203-204 (1986)
Iron Man #203-204 (1986)
After a brief fill-in for #202, we’re back to a complex Denny O’Neil script.  Madame Masque has pulled a body switch with Bethany Cabe, shown above.  Obadiah Stane made it all happen, but of course he’s dead now—but that doesn’t stop Masque from taking the opportunity to get close to Tony Stark so she can kill him.
But before she can, the real Bethany Cabe—again, in Masque’s body—shoots…

Iron Man #186-187 (1984)
Iron Man #186-187 (1984)
Vibro is a very ugly man who apparently never brushed his teeth.  He does some villainy.  Tony Stark is sober now, and trying to reinsert himself into the Iron Man life, and Rhodey seems to resent it.  Even though just a few issues ago, Rhodey wanted to give the suit back to Tony.
In a foreshadowing subplot, a couple brothers find the Brothers Grimms’ costumes.  Guess who’s gonna be appearing as…

Iron Man #164-167 (1982-1983)
Iron Man #164-167 (1982-1983)
This one is for all the marbles.  Actually, it’s for Tony Stark’s marbles.  And he loses them.
It starts with him being interrupted on his date with Indries, who was injured during the Knight’s attack on Start Industries and now, apparently, Tony is her sugar daddy.  He is interrupted because his security team has traced the attacking Knight to Glen Travail in Northern Scotland, and so Tony and…
