For the Spirits—Chapter III: Keep Your Plans
At the risk of feeling dumb, check in
It's not worth the risk of losing a friend
Even if they say:
“Just keep your plans, I hope
That you never have to drop
Anything for me.”
—At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb by Twenty One Pilots
.
Yume had to resist the urge to sigh. She already knew how this would go. All roads led to tea, Pai Sho, and no straight answers. If she could go back in time and reach out to her younger self, she’d warn the tired face in the mirror to enjoy Iroh’s company while he still made sense.
She cursed the Crew under her breath, doing her best to give the General a smile back or, at least, keep a straight face.
Why did I even say yes to this?

Every Single Time Azula Insults or Criticizes Zuko
"The Avatar State":
Zuko:[Angrily.] What are you doing here?
Azula: [Holds up a shell in her hand.] In my country, we exchange a pleasant hello before asking questions. [Rises and walks toward Zuko and Iroh.] Have you become uncivilized so soon, Zuzu?
2.
Azula: You know, Father blames Uncle for the loss of the North Pole. And he considers you a miserable failure for not finding the Avatar! [Cuts to Zuko, who is panting heavily.] Why would he want you back home, except to lock you up [Cuts back to Azula.] where you can no longer embarrass him?
"Zuko Alone":
1.
Young Azula: You waste all your time playing with knives. You're not even good!
2.
Young Azula: [Sits back down, and looks at Zuko out of the corner of her eye and whispers.] You'll never catch up …
"The Chase":
Azula: [Coolly.] You mean you haven't guessed? You don't see the family resemblance? Here's a hint. [Covers her eye and deepens her voice, imitating Zuko.] I must find the Avatar to restore my honor! [Aang remains silent; back in her normal voice.] It's okay, you can laugh. It's funny.
"The Crossroads of Destiny":
Azula: You're so dramatic. What? Are you going to challenge me to an Agni Kai?
"The Beach"
Zuko:[Cut to closer view of Zuko and Mai. Angrily.] Doing nothing is a waste of time. [Rises from his seat next to Mai.] We're being sent away on a forced vacation. [Walks over and grips the railing of the boat.] I feel like a child. Azula:[Frontal view.] Lighten up. So Dad wants to meet with his advisors alone, without anyone else around. Don't take it personally.
2.
Zuko:[Frontal view from behind the girls. Losing it now; furiously.] I'm angry at myself!Slamming down with his clenched fists he causes the camp fire to turn into a pillar of fire, the girls recoil from the flames. Cut to close-up view from above of Zuko. Cut to a wide-view of the entire campsite as the flame dies down. Zuko turns away. Azula: Why? Zuko[Close-up.] Because I'm confused. Because I'm not sure I know the difference between right and wrong anymore. Azula: You're pathetic.
"The Avatar and the Firelord"
1.
Azula: It's never too early for a sitting with the court painter, Zuko. Make sure he gets your good side.
2.
Zuko: But how did he die? Azula: [Turning toward Zuko.] Didn't you pay any attention in school, Zuko? He died peacefully, in his sleep. [Cut to a shot of the full room, as Azula walks away.] He was ancient.
"Nightmares and Daydreams"
Azula: Hello, Zuzu. If you've come for a royal hair-combing, I'm afraid you'll have to wait. Zuko: So I guess there's a big war meeting coming up, huh? And apparently I'm not welcome there. Azula: What do you mean? Of course you're welcome there! Zuko: Oh, yeah?! I guess that's why no one bothered to tell me about it! Azula: Oh, Zuko. Don't be so dramatic. I'm certain Dad wants you there. You probably just weren't invited because it's so obvious you're supposed to be there. Zuko: Well, were you invited? Azula: Of course! I'm the princess. Zuko: And I'm the prince! Azula: Exactly, so stop acting like a paranoid child! Just go to the meeting.
"Sozin's Comet Part III":
Zuko: Sorry, but you're not gonna become Fire Lord today. [Jumps off Appa.] I am. Azula: [Laughs.] You're hilarious.
The most consistent things she criticizes him for are being too "dramatic" and immature.

ii.
she stAys behind when her brother goes to chameleon bay, the aVatar to the eastern air temple, and the Earthbender to her parents. the comet is four Years away.
iii.
she finds him One day, serving tea, a week after her friends were to retUrn. they fight in angRy whispers and ugly sneers. his uncle perSuades her, with tea on the housE, to hold off on reporting them to the earth king.
iv.
katara never does report them to the earth king, but her reports of missing friends go nowhere. The dai li won't let her out of the city, though she makes an admittedly impressive effort. her house burns down, and zuko swears (honestLy) that it wasn't him. uncle ofFers her shelter (of course he does).
v.
the three of them conspire to escape the city, to find the avatar and her brother and toph. in what zuko swears Is a compLetely unrelated coincidence (not honestly), their house burns down. lee entered the city a singLe man and slips out with papers for himself, a wife, hua mei, and his uncle mushi. he is old enough now to Be head of their little household. the comet is threE years away.
vi.
they wander between villages, hoping for news of the avatar, but the last time anyone had seen him was near the last time katara herself had seen him. she notices new shAdows under zuko's eyes as his old punishment returns to haunt him. worry lines furrow iroh's brow. katara can never quite shake the tension in her shoulDers or the nausEa in her throat.
vii.
they fall into some kind of rhythm on the road, even after ba sing se falls to the fire nation. unCle disappears for days at a time for pai sho and news, leaving lee and hua mei to find work in the villages they pass through. they spend the time alone talking about mothers and fathers and homes and destinies, and lee learns to braid hair.
viii.
word of the avatar travels south from pouhai and they pack up their lives and chase down the rumor but it's a trap, all of it. Azula picked off sOkka and aang and toph, one bY one. she's been waiting for katara. zuko's appearance, she says with a sharp, toothy smile, is an unexpected bonus (and then zuko is looking at katara like lee looks at hua mei but he's standing next to his sister and poised to throw fire at her and katara wants to scream).
ix.
kataRa wanted to fight, bUt her infaNt son stRapped to her back was a liability, and AzUla knew it. she escaped wheN zuko, too eager, fiRed at her, and his fire collided with his sister's already well-aimed blast, and none of them coUld see iN the aftermath; the comet, then, was a year away.

Protocol III of the Geneva Convention puts limits on using incendiary weapons on civilians or forests/plants. The Fire Nation wantonly destroyed forests and environments and have scarred many, many civilians. The Fire Nation has also tortured or murdered prisoners of war, and took Earth Kingdom civilians as slaves on that ship, additional protocol II.
We see Azula (perfidy of her false surrender and torture of prisoners of war. you can get into it about whether using hypnotized people count as slave labor too.), Ozai, Zhao, Yon Rha, even Zuko (especially article 33. But civilian hostages, purposeful targeting and assault of civilians as an intimidation tactic, wanton destruction of civilian property, targeting civilians, perfidy) (And this is if you don't even consider trying to wipe out the last airbender as conspiracy to and intent of genocide, even though I personally think it counts) all commit things that the Geneva Convention classifies as war crimes in 4K on the screen.
Iroh wrote a letter bragging about razing cities to the ground. Article 6(b) of the 1945 IMT Charter (Nuremberg) lists “wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages, or devastation not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly” as a war crime.
Iroh was also Mongke's direct commanding superior, and is thus jointly responsible for the actions he took against Jet's people. Which was more destruction of villages and attacks on civilian populations for the purpose of military terrorism and intimidation by an occupying force.
Fire Nation has also historically carried out False Flag operations under the guise of airbenders (perfidy) prior to the genocide (also a war crime), and conspired to commit genocide against the Earth Kingdom.

Flowers - Azula x reader - part I
Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII [main masterlist]
Azula x gn reader, no warnings, requested by 🌹-anon
651 words, enjoy :)
You watched in awe as Azula shot another wave of blue fire across the courtyard, setting the training dummy ablaze. As this had been the last part of her training, you quickly made your way over to her, leaving Mai and Ty Lee, who also were present, behind. You did this after every training session of hers, so they knew what was coming. Mai rolled her eyes and Ty Lee let out a small giggle as they watched you praise her, wishing to receive only the slightest bit of attention from her: "You were awesome, Azula!" "Of course I was. I always am.", she answered, seemingly more focused on taking off her training armour than on your presence.
Her reaction may be discouraging, but it was nothing you weren't used to after seven months of trying to get closer to her, so you simply went to the next step: "Do you think that we could train together sometime?" To your surprise, this actually made her look at you, she seemed genuinely surprised: "We? Train together?" Her answer made you feel a weird mix of worry and excitement. "I don't think that you could compete with me, y/n." She went to the dressing rooms after saying that, leaving you alone.
Now that was depressing. Ty Lee apparently had been close enough to understand what Azula said, because she sent you an apologetic look. She and Mai were more or less the only people who knew of your feelings towards Azula. Them and General Iroh. Well, you weren't sure about whether he knew, especially as he wasn't in the palace very often, and even when he was, no one could be sure about what he knew of. He had been giving you some weird looks when you tried to flirt with Azula though, so you simply assumed that he knew too.
But that wasn't important now. You quickly smiled back at Ty Lee and hurried to your chamber, already a new plan in mind on how to take Azula's heart. Okay, if you were realistic, it probably wouldn't make her fall madly in love with you, but it should at least make her like you a bit more, and possibly show her how much you cared about her.
You went into your room, walking over to the fireplace. There stood, blooming as bright as the sun, your new plan: a panda lily. It was a rare flower you had brought here from a trip (some might call it an invasion) to the earth kingdom. It needed very special conditions to survive, so you would only take it out of its pot shortly before you would give it to her, to make sure it didn't wither away before she could plant it in one of her pots. You wondered if she would choose a pretty pot? Where would she put the pot? You would have never thought that dreaming of flower pots could be so romantic.
You had heard of a conference that was taking place soon. Mai, Ty Lee, some generals, and most importantly Azula would be there. Even if you had not been invited, your rank allowed you to show up as a visitor. An opportunity you would normally have picked, but in this case you decided to show up shortly before the conference was over. You would give the flower to her when she headed out. It felt better to do it in a somewhat open space because the atmosphere would be less tense. Of course you would still do it in a discreet manner. You didn't want the whole palace talking about it.
You took a few moments to admire your flower, the one that would soon be held by Azula's hands, and gently pulled it out of the pot. Along with some earth you put it in a cloth and began making your way to the conference hall.

So I wanted to talk about how some of my "fictional father" rules and ideas work.
First up: What characters from what fandoms would make good fathers? (Sorry it's a long list. Also, if you're wondering why certain antagonists' were listed, there's more explanation further down).
Fandom: Naruto. Characters: Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi, Gaara, Yamato, Gai, Neji, Shikamaru, Iruka, Jiraiya, Itachi, Obito, Orochimaru, and Zabuza.
Fandom: One Piece. Characters: All of the Mugiwara crew, Trafalgar, Kid, Ace, Sabo, Crocodile, Doflamingo, Lucci, Smoker, Katakuri, the Akazaya Nine, Shanks, Buggy, Marco, and Rayleigh. (I could honestly write almost every character on here as a parent figure, but the list would be way too long).
Fandom: Jujutsu Kaisen. Characters: Lol, all of them.
Fandom: Attack on Titan. Characters: Eren, Armin, Levi, Jean, Reiner, Levi and Erwin.
Fandom: Black Clover. Characters: Umm... All of them? This fandom is beyond rich with potential parent figures, don't even get me started.
Fandom: Guardians of The Galaxy. Characters: Quill, Drax, Rocket, and Yondu.
Fandom: Marvel. Characters: Tony, Thor, Steve, Bucky, Bruce, Scott, Loki, Clint, and Sam.
Fandom(s): DreamWorks and Disney. Characters: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, Bruno Madrigal, Grug Crood, Death the Wolf. (And a whole bunch of others.)
Fandom: Criminal Minds. Characters: Spencer, Derek, David, Matthew, and Luke.
Fandom(s): Alien movies like Predator, Avatar, or Transformers for some extra flavor and diversity.
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender. Characters: Aang, Sokka, Zuko, Iroh, and Jet.
Fandom: 911 and 911 Lone Star. Characters: All of them. Every main character within these two fandoms is amazing.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
Why are certain antagonists listed?
Well that's because I'm obsessed with bad guys and I love imagining them in scenarios where they are actually good. Antagonists in general are very powerful, crazy and frightening, but if you keep those attributes and turn them into good people with good intentions, they make for some pretty awesome, likable parent figures.
So if I ever write an antagonist as a parent figure, just know that I'm intentionally making them good for the benefit of the reader-inserts and the drabbles. But, hey, if you wanna read and imagine them the way they originally are, then by all means I support you.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
I obviously have father figures covered, but what about mother figures?
There are lots of female characters I love, but I primarily want to focus on the males just because that is my preference. However, on down the road I do see myself writing mother drabbles. I wouldn't mind. And, considering the circumstances of the reader-inserts, a mother figure might be more suited for the plot. You never know.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
What will the reader-inserts be like?
For reader-inserts under the age of twelve, I will display it in the title as "child!reader".
For reader-inserts over the age of twelve, I will display it in the title as "teen!reader".
For child reader plots, I plan for them to be mostly fluffy and light-hearted. You know, young kids are curious, they're inexperienced, they're clumsy, they get scared, they get bullied, and so on and so forth. There's lots of topics and plots I can create for child reader-inserts.
For teen reader plots, things might get a little bit more angsty. As we all know, teenage years are absolutely insane. Teenagers are rebellious, they're curious, they're discovering their own sexuality, they're going through puberty, and they're trying new, dangerous and some times risky things. Teenagers are also very, VERY emotional, and under certain circumstances they can really struggle with anxiety, depression, social stability, loneliness and a whole bunch of other stuff. Of course there will be fluff in these drabbles, but also some light angst here and there.
For the most part the reader will be portrayed as the biological child of the character, but I do plan on writing lots of adoption stuff too.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
The father figures won't always be perfect.
As we all probably know, parents are anything but perfect. They make mistakes. Lots and lots of mistakes. And sometimes parents don't care that they make mistakes, nor do they ever try to right their wrongs and apologize. Some parents don't even want to accept nor understand their child. (I'm sure some of you know what I mean).
But whereas these fictional father figures may make mistakes, they also try to fix those mistakes and right their wrongs. That's what I plan to accomplish with my father drabbles. I want to create loving, supportive, understanding father figures who are willing to do anything for their child. Because when you're a kid and you struggle with life, a loving parent is all you really want.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
What about characters who are too young to have kids?
So an example for this would be any character that is around the age of 15-25 like Luffy. Well there are two simple solutions to this. Either I'll age up the characters or I'll say that the reader is adopted. It kind of just depends on what the drabble calls for.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
Why am I doing this?
Well if you're like me and you had a rough childhood, then you just kind of want to reimagine yourself in a scenario where you're happy, accepted, catered, loved, protected, safe and cared for. I just want this to be something akin to a safe place for people to come and find joy and peace in the drabbles that I create.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
Mild disclaimer: I know I have a lot of characters in mind to write for, but the process of my updates may be slow-going sometimes because I do have a full time job and annoying adult responsibilities. I try to write whenever I can. If updates seem slow, just know that I'm sorry and that I'm trying my hardest to supply you with all the fictional father goodness you crave.
Ta-ta my friends!

New Fic: Hot for Teacher
Needed to clear the brains a little so here's a short silly fic I made for @domaystic using the randomly-selected prompts: 05. Teacher E. building renovations III. poll.
Featuring professor Asami Sato and her new colleague, Iroh Mifune; a hottest teacher poll; and a terribly-timed power outage. This is about as cheesy as it gets, folks. Fun fact, this is also my 100th published fic with Asami in it.
Enjoy! I wanted to make it under 500 words and got close-ish?

Eight out of nine does as he sais and only one doesn't.
Each of the Gavrila sisters will have to face countless obstacles, take part in dangerous adventures and figure out how to make a differance and change the tides, all the while coming to terms with their own pasts and problems, and parenting traumatized children.

“One step at a time, one punch at a time, one round at a time.”
Le doy a la disciplina 5 estrellas.

To answer your question, I don’t think so. The hatred that the many of the writers and the larger part of the fandom have for who they wrongly perceive Azula’s character to be was (at the time of the final) too great. Though efforts to provide alternative “interpretations” of Azula and of her writing has reached great strives in the last few years. So perhaps fandom contempt for Azula has been going down. Unfortunately, not in time for the comics.
However, I postulate that if Azula was afflicted with an injury of the body (rather than of the Psyche) claims of her being a “sadist” or a “psychopath” would be much rarer. As it is her mental breakdown in the book III final that caused the (in major part at least) fandom perceptions. Essentially, viewing Azula as “always being crazy. Rather than, from Azula’s own actions In the war. Which may be regarded as “bitchy” (to quote a phrase) by some, but is not actually of a war criminal or sadistic nature. However, Azula was given a psychological rather than physical injury at the final. Thus, creating the perception that Azula practiced cruelty for its own sake. The fandom acts as if Azula is some kind of Elagabalus or Caligula (after the sickness) from birth. Which is of course, demonstrably false.
Take for example, the scene during the war council where she says (to paraphrase) “we must burn down their hope” it is more in line with the policy of destroying (and then making examples of) defeated rebels (and remnants of team Avatar). It is Ozai who jumps on this, and decides to burn down the Earth kingdom. Taking “hope” to mean Earth” . Rather than the EK people’s hope in each other and in their leaders (such as Haru’s father for example). This perception, is encouraged by her breakdown in the final, and less so because she is actually a “psychopath”.
Is it immoral? Of course it is. But we must understand the difference between warfare/intimidation tactics (which Azula suggested) and outright genocide (which Ozai escalated the suggestion too). Azula was simply, born to fight on the (morally wrong) side of the war.
After all, Azula did not have the benefit of relations trying tooth and nail to show her a better path as Zuko did.
Another example, can be Azula’s alleged “animal cruelty”. Where in Zuko’s memory of his childhood, he was throwing bread at the turtle duck pond (whole loafs at a time) in order to feed them. He asserted to Ursa that was merely imitating his sister, and feeing the ducks the way (to paraphrase) that “Azula does”. Ursa than admonished him, and proceeds to show the correct way to feed the ducks. A consequence of the final (and Azula’s mental breakdown) is the belief in Azula’s supposed sadism, such as claim that Azula used to throw rocks at the title ducks even as a child. Which is a (false) claim that I have seen in the past (though to what extent it is believed by the wider Avatar fandom, I can not say).
Azula’s supposed animal cruelty that came from her suspicioned “psychopathy” is further disproved in book II, when she had Mai and Ty Lee guard the bet of the Earth King. The bear Bosco. To little tactical, or practical gain. Of course, this is not to claim that she overly cared for animals beyond the abstract. But is to say that Azula, does not go out of her way to be cruel to animals to satisfy a (fandom perceived) “sadism”. A third example can be the “ smirking” scene as Zuko’s Agni Kai against Ozai. Azula as raised by Ozai to rationalize violence with strength. And her father with faultlessness. It also ignores the cultural context, that Agni Kai’s have in the Fire Nation. As well as the whole room of people full of adults who themselves enjoyed the “spectacle” that Agni Kai’s are. Even when it is a father against his young son. The only adult that was perturbed was Iroh. Who notably, is also the only adult figure (keep in the mind that Azula is at the time a mentally abused XI year old) to reject Sozinite FN culture at large. With the exception of Jeong Jeong and his supporters, but they were (I believe) no where near the FN royal court at the time of the Agni Kai.
Rather than rationalizing that Azula simply fell apart because of key factors. Some immediate, others more long term.
1. The betrayer by her brother after she (at least in Azula’s view, it is after all debatable on whether she actually did) stuck her neck out for him. Rendering their relationship from being one of rivals into a more mutually fratricidal/sororicidal one
2. The betrayal by her friend Mai and Ty Lee. Though the stress of trying to juggle being a friend, and being a commander most certainly didn’t help in this regard.
3. The abandonment of her father and the creation of a hollow puppet title. Allowing Azula to see that at the end of the day, she was merely her fathers (and Nations) weapon. Rather than a daughter.
I’d also say that Iroh abandoned her, but that would imply that Iroh was ever actually there for Azula (with sole exception of a singular scene in the comics) in the first place.
This is also course in addition, to the more long term parental issues Azula already had. From Ozai’s manipulations and mental abuse growing up to Ursa’s (unintentional) emotional neglect.
After all, we have seen in released pages from the coming comic, that Azula’s greatest desire was to serve her nation and (most importantly) to earn the pride of her family. Including Ursa. The fact that she has never (in her mind) achieved thus, or been taught how to seek this familial pride in a more… healthy manner (rather than a dogged pursuit of such) contributed to her breakdown (“hallucinations and paranoia”) during the book III final. Which in turn, brings about the (false) fandom perception of innate “psychopathy” .
That said, the writers wrote themselves into a hole with how powerful Azula is and was. So the writers had to nerf her character in some way. In order for the two protagonist at the end (Zuko and Katara) to gain victory. If Azula had not been given the injury on her psyche, she would have captured or slain Zuko and Katara. After all, even when Zuko was at his best, and Azula at her worst, she still managed to force a stalemate on her brother. Frankly, saying more about Azula’s bending prowess than Zuko’s. Even with the learned “dragon Firebending”. Though I do believe that Zuko would have eventually won the battle of attrition against the mentally unbalanced Azula in the final.
And Katara, would not have been able to defeat a mentally stable/sane Azula with the powers of the Comet backing her. Katara simply would have been unable to use her trick water (under the arena floor) adequately against a tactician of Azula’s magnitude. That said, Katara performed brilliantly against Azula during the final with what she had and won by skill and wits.
As a brief aside, by the time of the comics, Azula’s bending prowess had progressed to such a degree that she had essentially become Jove in the flesh (about one the few good things I can say about the comics). Katara’s bending progressed greatly in the comics as well. I’d say that they have progressed to having roughly similar levels of (quite considerable) raw power. In a rematch between them (without buffs like the full moon, or the comet) I have no idea who’d win. It would be a sight to see regardless.
But back to the main point,
The writers, simply chose to impose a psychological rather than physical injury in order to effectively cripple Azula. Thus, contributing to the (false) claims from the wider Avatar fandom about Azula being an intrinsic “psychopath” and/or “sadist”. Which in turn, contributes to the hatred that Azula revived from the greater part of the fandom. As I enumerated upon above.
Of course, this is all merely my own interpretation (which is of course subject to my own biases) of Azula, the writers, and the Avatar fandom at a large. I also apologize, for any spelling or grammatical errors this repost may have.
Gotta ask the Azula fans
If Azula didn’t have a mental illness, as in the show ended with her maybe getting a physical injury as opposed to hallucinations and paranoia, do you think she would have a better shot at getting a redemption in the comics? Would the comics have treated her better?
