irma la douce (1963) directed by billy wilder
"Shows you the kind of world we live in. Love is illegal - but not hate. That you can do anywhere, anytime, to anybody. But if you want a little warmth, a little tenderness, a shoulder to cry on, a smile to cuddle up with, you have to hide in dark corners, like a criminal."

Movie Review | Irma La Douce (Wilder, 1963)
Tumblr media
Shirley MacLaine is the perfect leading lady for this, because she's able to carry a convincingly wholesome demeanour yet imbue it with a certain edge, a certain sharpness of wit and personality, so she embodies the film's mix of broad humour and darker subject matter. If anything, she keeps it afloat even when the movie gets too broad or too bloated, and likely does a much better job in the role than I suspect would have been done by Marilyn Monroe, who was the original choice. It's interesting that Hitchcock didn't manage to do anything with this quality in The Trouble With Harry, but I guess he's more into blondes. One thing both movies do get however is that MacLaine looks great in green.
So for her performance, this gets a recommendation. But it's also made worthwhile by Jack Lemmon playing an insecure dweeb and doing an impression of an Englishman that feels like a hate crime, and by Lou Jacobi as his bartender and confidante who has seemingly held every job known to man. And for a big Hollywood movie from the '60s, the movie is refreshingly nonjudgmental about sex work and indeed challenges the hero's retrograde assumptions around it, if in an offhand, lighthearted manner. And because it's a big Hollywood movie from the '60s, you can enjoy how it renders the seedier alleys of Paris as one great big confection, captured in lavish Technicolor images.
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice James Caan in a cameo, as well as Tura Satana in a supporting role, making this neither the best (Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!) nor the worst (The Astro-Zombies) movie that I've seen her in.

I’ve got my Hedy Lamar pin curl set wrapped and having a smoke while my delicates dry.
Then begins the deliciousness that is getting ready cross cross applesauce in front of my wall mirror while singing along to my playlist.
A future cheers from me at tonight’s new years burlesque show in the case I’m not interested in being on my phone then.
Happy new year 💋
