Yes! Mr Murphy (Rewritten)
PART 42: SEX TAPE
Pairing: Cillian Murphy x Reader
Warning: Lots of Angst, Age Gap, Teacher x Student, Extreme Smut
PLEASE COMMENT AND ENGAGE!
The following morning, when you stumbled into the living room, you noticed that your dress had been hung up over one of the armchairs neatly and that there was no sign of Kit. It looked like she had packed up and left without saying goodbye, causing you a mix of relief and concern simultaneously. Relief, because your unease around her presence eased somewhat, and concern, because something about her sudden departure struck you as odd. Nonetheless, you decided to put these worries aside temporarily and focused on preparing for the day ahead.
You made some coffee and took a seat beside the window to read through Cillian's latest script, knowing that he wouldn't mind. Cillian himself was still sleeping peacefully, clearly exhausted from last night's chaos. He deserved a rest. Taking in the view outside, you felt grateful for the serene silence surrounding you. However, amidst the tranquility, there was an eerie sense of loneliness hanging in the air. It dawned on you then that even amidst Cillian's fame and success, his life was far from perfect and neither was yours.
You had recently received some letters from the department of immigration, reminding you that your visa was going to run out within six months and, unless you found a suitable employer who was willing to sponsor you, you knew that you had to return to the US.
Unbeknownst to Cillian, you had spent countless sleepless nights wracking your brain, trying to come up with ways to prolong your stay in Ireland, yet nothing came close to materialising just yet. Feeling guilty and fearful of burdening Cillian with your problems, you resolved to wait patiently for the opportune moment to confide in him about this issue but it like as though he had bigger issues to deal with right now as, suddenly, his manager knocked on the door.
"Up so early?" you asked after having opened the door for Ben, who was in his sixties and exhausted from last night's BAFTAs.
"Yes. Where is Cillian?" he asked immediately, and almost rudely, just as Cillian stumbled out of the bedroom, wearing only a pair of boxer shorts.
"Good morning, Ben" Cillian said with a yawn, rubbing his eyes. "Anything interesting?" he wondered, seeing that Ben usually liked to sleep in past nine.
"Interesting might be putting it lightly," Ben replied worryingly. "There's some bad news coming our way, unfortunately," he explained, and Cillian's brows furrowed.
"Oh, really? What sort of bad news?" Cillian asked, sitting down opposite Ben. His curiosity piqued instantly.
Ben glanced nervously across the table at Cillian before breaking the unsettling news.
"So, this morning, I was informed that there's this video on the internet now, featuring you engaging in explicit sexual acts," Ben explained, causing Cillian to choke on his cup of coffee.
Hearing those dreadful words, Cillian froze, unable to believe what he heard. His face drained of color as his world crumbled beneath him.
"What?" Cillian croaked hoarsely, scarcely able to find words. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still – reality suspended, disbelief palpable in every cell of his body. He couldn't fathom why someone would do such a thing, seeking vengeance perhaps? Or simply to exploit his celebrity status? Regardless, the thought of this sordid act being public knowledge sent waves of panic coursing through his veins.
"Am I on the video too?" you asked a little calmer than Cillian, but still confused.
"Unfortunately, not, because if you were, you at least could give a statement together when shit hits the fan,"
Ben answered bitterly, his voice dripping with fatigue. His eyes fell onto you briefly, conveying sorrow and compassion. There wasn't much more to add—this was indeed terrible news.
"Then who is on the video? Do you have a copy of it? I mean, is it even me on the video or is it photoshopped?" Cillian queried, barely containing his anxiety as his head swirled with questions.
"Oh, it's you and you seem rather drunk too, man. This is much worse than the public urination incident," Ben scoffed sarcastically, attempting to defuse the situation slightly as he handed him his phone.
Despite Ben's efforts to alleviate the gravity of the situation, it did little to comfort Cillian, who remained gripped by terror. All manner of scenarios ran rampant through his mind; all of them potentially damning to his reputation and career.
Reluctantly, he clicked on the video while you sat by his side, hoping fervently that none of it was true. But as the footage began playing, he realized the unimaginable truth: yes, there he was, captured in all his vulnerability.
He could hardly breathe as he watched himself perform intimate acts, oblivious to the fact that they were being recorded. Each stroke of his hand, each whisper, etched themselves indelibly onto his memory, forever marring the sanctity of the most private moments he had ever known. His face flushed crimson with shame, regret surging through his veins like lava.
Seeing him have sex with another woman brought back memories of painful rejections and broken promises.
Your own heart plummeted as well, imagining how it must feel to discover such a compromising video was released online. It didn’t matter how innocently it happened; everything had become muddled, cloudy in your eyes.
The sound of your breath quickened, mirroring the rapid pulse throbbing against his temple. The heat radiating off his skin intensified, giving credibility to the choking sensation rising inside his chest.
"Turn it off!" you choked, holding back tears. "Kit did this and the fact that you had sex with a woman like this makes me ill," you cried, incredulous at the idea of betrayal running deeper than anything you had previously witnessed. Even though your heart ached for Cillian, your rage mounted as you remembered the snarky remarks, the condescending attitude, and the calculated ambition simmering beneath the surface whenever you interacted with Kit. And now, she had stooped so low, trading in the privacy of others like currency.
"She wouldn't..." he began to say, struggling to maintain composure as you interrupted him.
"Yes, she fucking would and you are too blind to see it. Do you know how she talks to me? The things she tells me, Cillian? You have no idea how vile this woman is," you broke down.
Your jaw clenched tightly, feeling anger and frustration seething beneath your calm exterior. In spite of your turmoil, however, you knew that venting this rage directly toward Cillian would accomplish nothing except further strain already fraught relations. So instead, you turned your attention away from him for a fleeting moment, taking stock of the situation at large.
"What do you think Ben?" Cillian finally managed to utter after watching the video, trying hard to regulate his pounding heart rate. As if in response to his question, Ben let out a heavy sigh, reaching for his glass of water which sat on the nearby coffee table. With a quiet murmur, he drank deeply from the glass, his expression grimacing with disapproval and pity for his client and friend.
"Well, we need to handle this swiftly and decisively, my boy", Ben advised sternly, looking straight into Cillian's eye.
"First, we contact everyone involved – the media, any potential legal representatives and Kit," Ben said and, with reluctance, Cillian nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation.
A torrent of conflicting emotions cascaded over you in that moment, leaving you raw and exposed, nauseous with anxiety.
"I am sorry, I..." you interrupted them, feeling nauseous again, just like last night, before disappearing into the bathroom momentarily.
Upon returning, you noticed Cillian wiping his eyes vigorously, struggling to process the magnitude of his predicament. Your hearts continued to beat in tandem, the rhythm matching the crescendo of anger and despair mounting within both of you. Cillian reached out towards you instinctively, grasping your hands tightly, needing something tangible to anchor him during these tumultuous times.
"I am sorry this happened," he apologized sincerely, fully aware of his responsibility in this whole mess.
"It's not your fault. I mean, yes, you slept with her after we had broken up and it's pretty awful for me to watch you have sex with another woman, but I can't really be angry at you for something you did when we weren't together," you tried to rationalise, doing your best to suppress the jealousy burning hotter inside.
Cillian took a deep breath, letting out a shaky exhale as he attempted to compose himself. "You are perfect, you know that?" he spoke softly, stroking your cheek tenderly. The warmth from his touch offered solace amidst the storm.
Inside his head, he struggled with guilt and remorse over his transgressions, yet the genuine concern evident in his gaze was enough to quell the nagging doubt clawing at the corners of your mind.
Understanding your insecurities, he held you closer, drawing strength from your steadfast presence while Ben made several calls in order to get the video taken down.
"I think a statement from you would be helpful here," he said gravely, gesturing towards Cillian who usually hated talking to the press and, together with his publicist, they prepared exactly this. A detailed statement in which, finally, Cillian threw Kit under the bus after receiving critical information from the agency's team that the video had indeed been linked back to Kit's IP address.
"Who knows what else she is responsible for," Ben said recalling several articles which had been released ever since you came into the pictures as well as past cheating allegations which drove a wedge into Cillian's and Danielle's already fragile marriage at the time.
As your resentment escalated, so did your desire to confront Kit. Yet, the very notion terrified you, fearing retaliation or further humiliation. After discussing with Ben about the plan of action, including approaching law enforcement and issuing statements, you retreated to bedroom where you laid curled around yourself, wrestling with your demons once more.
Perhaps Kit was right when she said that you were not cut out for this life, that you were naïve and idealistic compared to those who frequented these circles. However, despite your doubts, it seemed impossible to escape the pull of this world.
Hearing the front door open and close, followed by familiar steps entering the room, pulled you out of your introspection. Turning towards Cillian, you saw him pale with exhaustion and worry as he approached the bed.
Reaching out for your hand, he gave it a firm squeeze. "We will make it through this," he promised earnestly, offering some measure of comfort in this chaos.
"I am not too worried about, well, the obvious, I suppose. But I am worried about how this will affect us, because I love you so fucking much," Cillian
confessed passionately, wrapping his arms around you protectively. His eyes reflected an intensity of emotion, conveying profound gratitude for your unwavering support during this challenging period.
Unable to form coherent words due to the lump in your throat, you simply leaned into him, allowing the solidarity of his embrace to offer consolation and respite. There was still so much left undiscovered about one another, yet somehow, this shared experience only brought you even closer together.
"I love you too Cillian, beyond anything I could possibly imagine. This thing with Kit won't change that," you assured him, intertwining your fingers with his, seeking solace in his unwavering affection.
"And neither should it," Cillian replied solemnly, kissing your forehead gently.
"I did watch the entire video. It wasn't very long but I noticed something stubble," you then admitted shamelessly to break the ice, avoiding direct eye contact. Despite being repulsed by the incident itself, curiosity got the better of you, wanting to understand why someone would record themselves having intimate encounters without permission.
"And what is that?" Cillian asked suspiciously, intrigued by your observation.
"You said my name, not hers," you explained carefully, choosing your words delicately, causing Cillian to smile.
"I thought about you, obviously," Cillian added reassuringly, his face flush from embarrassment.
There was an awkward silence before Cillian continued, "You do something to me that I can't quite comprehend, but you already know that, don't you?"
You giggled lightheartedly, grateful for his sense of humor. Gripping onto his arm tighter, you felt the weight of his words sink into your soul. "Yes, I do. I have you wrapped right around my finger, Mr Murphy" you expressed genuinely, appreciating his vulnerability.

It’d been some time since Cían had been in the company of Tiernan Hollaran. When he’d been selected as Ireland’s councilman following the switch over, Cían had been present in Dublin’s castle serving on the reserves for the guards, in between jobs as hired muscle and too curious to pass up the opportunity to check out the fresh meat swanning around the place as it's supposed rightful heir in some form or another. Cían had appraised him from above in the balconies amongst the gaggle of equally curious staff and formed his judgements but had made no attempt to introduce himself, instead making himself scarce as soon as the opportunity presented itself. He’d recognised Tiernan’s scent before he’d laid eyes upon him and though he’d spent the vast majority of his wartime years in a feral state with little clear recollection of events, he remembered Tiernan a little too well.
He’d made numerous attempts on the ghoul’s life on the battlefield, each one rebuffed and resulting in Kaden’s aid to pull him back around after getting himself out just before things got perilous. The game of cat and mouse hadn’t been intentional; Cían had wanted him dead at first. Over time, however, when it was clear victory was straying further and further from the fae side’s grasp, Cían had just been glad to have something to pass the time until the inevitability of his capture finally came. Whether Tiernan had been involved in it, Cían couldn’t recall. It wasn’t like it mattered, it wasn’t as if it changed anything. It was a sentence worse than death regardless of which scumbag was calling the shots.
He hadn’t expected to cross paths with Tiernan so soon after settling into the village but considering that his employer was a colleague of Halloran’s, he really should’ve braced himself for the reunion he’d half-dreaded, half-eagerly anticipated for far longer than he should’ve following the end of the war. Having been dragged into Euphoria to help the bar staff with a last minute stock count before doors opened for the night, Cían’s attention was immediately drawn to the club’s doors being opened as one of many of the night’s arrogant bastards thought they could wander on in whenever they felt like it regardless of what the signage read outside. “Oi,” Cían barked, dumping his armful of boxed straws onto the bar and turning to wander over to block the path of the intruder, Tiernan’s unmistakable scent hitting him a moment too late to halt the interrogation now that it was in motion. “Doors aren’t open to the masses, VIPs included, for another twenty minutes, councilman. De Luca didn’t say a word ‘bout expecting you early, either. Gotta ask you to turn it around and bless us with your dazzling company just a little later in the evening. It's club policy.”
#int. -> tiernan.#( i don't know how this got as long as it did. eek. no pressure to match length though <3 )#( lemme know if you'd like anything changed! idm at all )

IN THESE TIMES
The future of the four-day work week is looking brighter after the results of a major new study were released last month.
Nearly 3,000 workers at over 60 organizations took part in the latest trial of reduced working time — and the findings surpassed most expectations. A large majority of workers reported significant improvements in their quality of life. And it wasn’t just employees who preferred the shorter working week: more than 90% of employers who participated opted to continue the arrangement.
The U.K.-based experiment introduced a four-day week or equivalent cut in hours, with no loss of pay, from June to December 2022. Research teams at Boston College, Cambridge University and the London think tank Autonomy studied the effects. Overall, workers reported lower levels of stress and burn out, higher job satisfaction and less conflict between work and family demands. They also said they felt more capable at work and better able to manage their time.
Almost all (96%) said they preferred working four days and most put a high value on their new free time. Asked how much money would persuade them to return to a five-day week, 29% said they would want a 26-50% pay increase, while 8% wanted more than 50% and another 15% said no amount of money would lure them back.
Employers benefited as well. Compared with the pre-trial period, there were fewer staff resignations and days off for illness. Revenues saw a slight increase. Asked to score their experience on a scale from 0 (negative) to 10 (positive), the average among employers was 7.5 for productivity and 8.3 overall.
One likely reason for the trial’s success is that it recognized there was no one-size-fits-all formula. Each organization could choose its own approach to work time reduction so long as it offered significant reductions without loss of pay. The trial was also meticulously prepared, with two months of workshops, coaching, mentoring and peer support, drawing on experience from earlier pilots in more than 100 companies in the United States, U.K., Australia, Canada and Ireland. This approach was geared to help participants improve well-being and economic prosperity at the same time — by designing new working practices and changing company culture.
The trial took place during a pitched moment in history, as evolving digital communications combined with a global pandemic to wreak havoc on the concept of “normal” employment. More employees than ever could work anytime and anywhere with a suitable device and internet signal. And most everyone who took part had fresh memories of when workplaces closed down, human proximity seemed lift-threatening and online meetings redefined personal interaction.
In some ways, the Covid pandemic gave the four-day week a boost by forcing companies to adapt to new ways of thinking and working. One manager of a manufacturing company in the UK trial observed, “I think we have come out of the pandemic with a new outlook on life… There’s a greater expectation around flexible working, hybrid working — people are taking that opportunity to think ‘I want to do something completely different.’”

ah, here he is. three issues into hellblazer. john is very clearly someone that doesn't hold the popular political opinion, and with the values she held, it's clear why.
i live in. america. so i had to do some separate research on my own during my first read through and feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but she held a policy where basically the government would step back and let businesses collapse if they couldn't make enough money without government support. she didn't want trade unions. she wanted to base the economy on banking and service instead of manufacturing, so people in london ended up successful and pretty much anywhere else in the united kingdom wasn't doing so hot because employment was falling flat. then she pulled government support from the failing industries and people lost their jobs and so many people fell into poverty.
so yeah, after reading all of this, it made it a lot easier to understand why the demons of hell would support her and john would feel tortured listening to her acceptance speech. as you learn more about him through reading hellblazer- and, hell, even in this issue- he's against this sort of thing. gave a quid to a lady to feed her baby, and he's got a friend who's gay and eventually reveals that he has aids. of course, there's more, but i like to have scans as proof and i don't have too many at the moment.
john is for the rights of everyone. he wants everyone to have equal opportunity. the shit thatcher pulls doesn't really provide that, if london is the financial center and places like ireland, northern and western england, and so on are no longer getting support and communities are falling into poverty. it's like fucking people over because you don't think they deserve a chance and getting rid of industries because they're failing and pulling support from them is treating the government like a business rather than something that's meant to have your back when you fall. something that's supposed to lead and protect. you let someone fall into poverty, who are you protecting? the upper class, especially if you aren't doing anything to help get the people in poverty out of it. some might argue it's not the government's job to make sure you have the necessities to survive like food, water, shelter, and in our society a job, but. it is.
i could be missing some things on thatcher, so feel free to correct me or add to this, but yeah. that's the post.
#john constantine#hellblazer#british politics of the 1980s....#just. seeing moments like these really show you what kind of guy john really is#i think john is the kind of guy that really does care about other people but he doesn't know how to show it all the time#which translates into people thinking he's selfish and doesn't care about anyone#we see this. a lot. even in the new dc stuff#“we can't trust you” “you only care about yourself” even if he ends up putting his life on the line for everyone multiple times#saves the world in hellblazer at least a handful of times because “who else is gonna do it” even though he isn't directly affected at times#sigh. yeah#basically#i like learning more to understand his point of view on things

Gotta ask, you’re a lawyer, social worker, writer, NHL fan who’s been to many many games, you hold two degrees across various fields and universities, etc etc…how did you manage to do it all??? What is your life story??? Genuinely asking bc it is very admirable.
Black girl magic.
Genuinely.
When I was 4, I was sexually abused by a relative, then abused again at 6 by a neighbor. Around that same age, I was called nigger for the first time.
My dad was a military officer. I attended 6 different schools between K-8.
Through my dad, I am Black & Native. Through my mom, I am Black & Irish. My paternal grandfather was the product of rape, so he never knew his Native family. My maternal grandfather was a white Irish-American man who grew up in a sundown and attended lynchings as a young man. We learned about his racist past when my aunt went through his chest and found momentos & photos from the lynchings.
When I was a teenager, this same grandfather developed Alsheimers & would call me nigger, tar-baby, and porch monkey when I went to visit my grandma. Other times, when he didn't recognize me, he would approach me with just in his eyes. He would comb down his blond hair, adjust his clothes, then approach flirtatiously. I would have to avoid his hands.
We called him "Mr. Howard" and not grandpa.
In high school, my parents divorced, and we moved to my mother's hometown, where I befriended Black kids who were members of GD, VL, and LK. I got in trouble for fighting and was suspended and expelled from school activities for a semester.
Within a two year period, I lost 6 classmates to car accidents, including my senior year locker buddy.
In high school, I met a junior hockey player who had a crush on my best friend. He invited us to a game where he got in a fight & knocked a dude's tooth out. Thus, I fell in love with hockey.
I attended a PWI on a merit scholarship. I befriended mostly white girls, so that's how I learned about their inner group dynamics.
Got into law school. Did bad my first year. I never learned how to study. I have an excellent memory, so I would read something and retain it. That worked well in undergrad but not so well in law school. I turned my grades around by my final year, but in that same year, I lost my paternal grandfather and my roommate. My roommate died at her computer. They did multiple autopsies but never determined the cause of death. Marta just exhaled and died.
I was interviewing for a prosecutor role in Chicago when I started to have nightly visits from an old hag. I would be in lecture and have an impulse to jump from my seat and shred my clothes with my nails. I was representing a DV victim in her employment case when I had a panic attack and missed an administrative hearing. That was when I decided not to become an attorney.
After law school, I got a job at Amazon.com during its early days. I was there before the Kindle launched, and Jeff B was in my chain of command. I would get 3am emails from him. Had to leave when I found one of my coworkers sleeping under their desk.
So I moved to Ireland and got another degree. Wrote my dissertation on White Men, then returned to Amazon for a few months before jumping to work in government.
I have worked in the court system. I have been a child welfare social worker. I was hand selected to serve as a discharge social worker, working at an inpatient & FORENSIC hospital where I worked with pedophiles, murderers, and rapists. I was assaulted and left brain-injured by such a person.
I had to relearn how to walk and talk properly. I have lost jobs due to my disability and fought off abusive landlords who tried to evict me when I refused to sleep with him.
I have faced legitimate moments when I thought about ending my life, but I have such a strong desire to live. Tomorrow always brings a new day with new opportunities. I know every hardship & every trauma had only made me stronger.
Thank you for asking.

(Emphasis mine)
It's now been eight months since SAG-AFTRA members voted in favour of a strike authorisation in the games industry due to stalling negotiations over the Interactive Media Agreement.
The bargaining has been ongoing since October 2022 with companies including Activision, EA, Epic Games, Insomniac, WB Games, and more – all firms working with actors on voice and motion performances for video games.
While SAG-AFTRA has not moved forward with its strike as of yet, dialogue reached a bit of a dead end soon after the authorisation was approved
...
Crabtree-Ireland says he finds it hard to see how SAG-AFTRA would compromise on protection for all its members, which is what could eventually could lead to a strike.
"What needs to happen in order for this to move forward and us not to end up on strike against these companies is for them to revisit their resistance and their insistence on sort of splitting off our members and protecting some and not others – that's how this ultimately gets resolved," he says.
"So at this point, I would say there is a really real possibility that's trending towards probability that we will be on strike against them in the next 30 to 45 to 60 days. We want to exhaust every opportunity to try and resolve these things without having to actually pull that trigger on a strike."
...
Unionisation has historically been lagging behind in games, with workers in the industry slowly catching up with protections that are more standard in film. When we mention that reality and ask what needs to change for games to reap similar benefits, Elmaleh says she's interested to see what will come out of the current situation.
"The truth of any sort of basis of a union is that you have to resist," she says. "Corporations don't give things. Employers don't give things without resistance. To come into that awareness as a worker that you have something that they need, and that it is leverage that can be applied effectively – and has been proven to be applied effectively through collective action throughout history – is an awareness you need to step into and really take ownership of it. It takes a fight.
I'd highly recommend reading the whole article because it IS very interesting and breaks down the issue clearly but for the people who aren't going to do that:
If we get Hot Strike Summer: The Game (actors), we're not going to imply this is pointless or bad because it's not devs because EVERYONE deserves protections and a rising tide lifts all ships.
Kk thanks!
#industry bullshit#gaming industry#sag aftra#video game voice actors#also reminder that getting a fair deal is more important than a strike if the corporations agree to protections that is a good thing

Chicago's History in Rich Explorers
The City of Chicago, with its extensive and rich history, has witnessed significant transformations. As one of the largest cities in the United States, it has evolved from its founding by French explorers to becoming an industrial powerhouse. Chicago has navigated through numerous eras, leaving an indelible mark on America. Established in 1779 as Fort Dearborn by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a fur trader of Haitian and African descent and considered Chicago's first permanent resident, the city's historical tapestry is woven with diverse threads.

Early Settlements: Native American Tribes
The history of the United States is intrinsically linked to that of Native American tribes, who first settled in North America thousands of years ago. Tribes like the Apache, Cherokee, and Sioux were among the earliest people to inhabit the continent long before Europeans began exploring. These tribes lived a nomadic lifestyle for much of this time, forming small settlements as they followed migrating animal herds or sought out lands with more fertile soils. As these settlements evolved, becoming more extensive and intricate, they developed distinct cultural identities. Notable examples include the Iroquois Confederacy, an alliance of five Native American nations, and the Mississippian Mound Builders, who constructed expansive earthworks in present-day Louisiana and Mississippi.

19th Century Boomtown: Immigration and Development
The 19th century brought an influx of immigrants to the United States, particularly in cities like Chicago. Many immigrants were drawn to this bustling city by its promise of opportunity and potential for personal growth. This time marked a significant boomtown as new businesses, industries, and infrastructure began to develop remarkably. As these immigrants settled into their new city, they quickly made their mark by introducing fresh ideas and innovations that led to further economic growth. By the end of the 19th century, Chicago had become a major industrial center with an international economy rivaling other large cities worldwide.

Manufacturing and Migration: 19th and 20th Centuries
The 19th and 20th centuries marked a period of massive industrialization, and increased demand for manufacturing labor came with it. By 1900, in Chicago's metropolitan area factories. Many of these employees had come from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and other parts of Europe to work in the factories due to limited job prospects back home. This need drove many people to migrate from rural areas to large cities such as Chicago in search of employment opportunities. Chicago was once known for its large stockyards that processed livestock meat, but the city also grew into one of the most important centers for manufacturing in the United States. Immigrants were critical in fueling Chicago's remarkable growth during this time. They brought new skills and ideas that helped propel the city into a major center for innovation and industry.

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 remains one of the most catastrophic disasters in U.S. history. Sparking on October 8th, a small fire broke out on the Southwest Side of Chicago, swiftly engulfing the city. The inferno raged for two days, consuming over three square miles of land and devastating an estimated 17,500 buildings. The cause of the fire is unknown to this day, though many theories exist as to what may have sparked it. Some believe that a cow belonging to Mrs. O'Leary kicked over a kerosene lamp in her barn, while others suspect that faulty wiring or arson was responsible for starting the blaze. Whatever its cause, conditions were ripe for disaster due to an arid summer that left much of Chicago covered in sawdust and dried lumber - perfect fuel for any spark that might be ignited.

Growth Despite Adversity: Post-Fire Rebuilds
The City of Chicago is no stranger to adversity, and the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 is a prominent example. Despite this catastrophic event, the city was able to rebuild and grow in the wake of destruction. With determination and resilience written into its history, it is no surprise that Chicago has been able to once again find success after facing another setback: the wildfires of 2020. In June and July last year, more than 11,000 acres were burned by wildfires in northern Illinois due to extreme weather patterns across the Midwest. Fortunately for the citizens of Chicago, despite these conditions leading to some property damage, the city maintained its strong sense of community throughout its recovery efforts. After a summer full of dedicated work from local officials and volunteers alike, many areas have experienced positive change as they rebuild their city.

-:Education and employment in UK:-
Employment and education are vital components of the social and economic structure of the United Kingdom. Higher education, further education, and primary and secondary education comprise the three main sectors of the UK educational system. State-funded and private schools are available for children between the ages of five and eighteen who must attend school. Students in the UK can pursue a range of degrees at prestigious universities. Higher education is expensive, and in addition to tuition, students may be qualified for government loans to assist with living expenses.
Regarding jobs, the labor market in the UK is broad, competitive, and includes a lot of different industries. Opportunities for employment differ by industry and region, but London and the South East have a wealth of options. Workplace laws, such as those pertaining to minimum wages and anti-discrimination, protect employees' rights. Job seekers can look for openings via websites of businesses, government agencies, and online job boards; they frequently rely on networking to increase their chances. Contracts for employment come in a variety of forms, from permanent jobs to gig economy jobs that are temporary or self-employed. For those who qualify, the UK also offers unemployment benefits like Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit. There is a progressive income tax system in place, with wages varying according to industry, role, and location. Income tax and National Insurance contributions are subtracted from employees' earnings. It is noteworthy that policies and regulations pertaining to education and employment are subject to change, and there may be variations in the details between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as each region has varying degrees of autonomy in these areas.

Job Opportunities and Work Environment in Romania, Hungary, and the Schengen Area
In Europe, the job market has shown remarkable resilience despite the global socio-economic challenges of recent years. Today we focus on Romania and Hungary, two Eastern European countries, as well as the larger Schengen Area, and the opportunities they present to job seekers.
Romania, located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and South eastern Europe, has a diverse and growing economy. The Information Technology (IT) sector in Romania has been a strong driver of job growth, making it an attractive destination for IT professionals. In recent years, the country has gained the reputation of being an outsourcing hub, which has led to an increase in job opportunities in customer service and technical support. Moreover, jobs in the healthcare sector, engineering, and construction also remain in high demand.
Hungary, with its strategic position in the heart of Europe, boasts a robust economy with a strong focus on foreign investment. The automotive industry is one of the country's most prominent sectors, and it's continuously creating job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers. Information and Communication Technology (ICT), logistics, and manufacturing sectors are also among Hungary's largest employers. Teaching English is another area where foreigners can find job opportunities in Hungary, particularly in Budapest.
The Schengen Area, comprising 26 European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border control at their mutual borders, presents a diverse range of job opportunities. For those interested in the finance sector, Luxembourg and Frankfurt offer ample opportunities. Meanwhile, those keen on fashion and design might look towards Milan or Paris, and individuals with an interest in technology would do well in Berlin or Amsterdam. Also, the EU's "Blue Card" program is a work permit allowing high-skilled non-EU citizens to work and live in any country within the EU, excluding Denmark, Ireland, and the UK.
Despite the varying opportunities, some commonalities exist in job hunting across these regions. Networking is vital and can be done through attending industry events, job fairs, or through online platforms like LinkedIn. Fluency in the local language is a significant advantage, though many international companies operate in English. Understanding local job market trends, having a CV that matches European standards, and persistence are crucial for job success in these countries. To sum up, Europe's diverse and dynamic job market, as represented by countries like Romania and Hungary and the larger Schengen Area, offers a wide array of opportunities for job seekers. Whether you're an IT expert, a healthcare professional, an automotive engineer, or a teacher, there's a place for you in Europe's flourishing employment landscape.

Why Actors Are Going on Strike
BY LAURA ZORNOSA
Time.com
UPDATED: JULY 12, 2023 4:37 PM EDT | ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: JULY 12, 2023 4:28 PM EDT
Just after midnight on the West Coast, the contracts between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) expired—meaning that a deal between the two had not been reached. SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee unanimously voted to recommend a strike to its national board, which is expected to formally announce the strike on Thursday.
On June 5, nearly 65,000 of the approximately 160,000 members that make up SAG-AFTRA approved a strike authorization with a 97.91% “yes” vote. The union includes actors, dancers, DJs, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other media professionals.
Two days later, SAG-AFTRA entered negotiations on its agreement with the AMPTP, including Amazon/MGM, Apple, NBCUniversal, Disney/ABC/Fox, Netflix, Paramount/CBS, Sony, and Warner Brothers. On June 30, the contracts between the two were extended, and they now expire at midnight on Wednesday.
“There has been a sea change in the entertainment industry, from the proliferation of streaming platforms to the recent explosion of generative AI, and at stake is the ability of our members to make a living,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, said in a letter about the strike authorization referendum. “We must ensure that new developments in the entertainment industry are not used to devalue or disrespect the performers who bring productions to life.”
On Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA agreed to AMPTP’s last-minute request for federal mediation, which would bring in a neutral third party to help work toward a compromise. SAG-AFTRA clarified, though, that it would not extend the negotiations for a second time.
“We will not be distracted from negotiating in good faith to secure a fair and just deal by the expiration of our agreement,” the guild said in a press release. “We are committed to the negotiating process and will explore and exhaust every possible opportunity to make a deal, however we are not confident that the employers have any intention of bargaining toward an agreement.”
Among SAG-AFTRA’s demands are increased minimum pay rates, increased streaming residuals (neither of which have kept up with inflation), and improved working conditions. Royalty payments, which are contingent on the number of a show’s reruns, are no longer reliable. Streaming, which has shifted to shorter seasons over longer periods of time, has made less work available to actors. And union members want guarantees from studio and production companies about how, exactly, artificial intelligence will be used—they want to protect their likenesses and make sure they are well compensated when any of their work is used to train AI.
On June 27, more than 300 actors—including Meryl Streep, Quinta Brunson, and Jennifer Lawrence—signed a letter to the SAG-AFTRA Leadership and Negotiating Committee stating that “SAG-AFTRA members may be ready to make sacrifices that leadership is not.”
“We hope you’ve heard the message from us: This is an unprecedented inflection point in our industry, and what might be considered a good deal in any other years is simply not enough,” the letter reads. “We feel that our wages, our craft, our creative freedom, and the power of our union have all been undermined in the last decade. We need to reverse those trajectories.”
When was the last time SAG-AFTRA went on strike?
SAG-AFTRA has a long history of strikes and boycotts. In 2021, the union barred Donald Trump from ever rejoining because he obstructed the peaceful transfer of power to Joe Biden—and because of his attacks on journalists. (Trump had resigned from the group earlier that month.)
In 2018, SAG-AFTRA announced a strike against the global advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty after the advertising agency stated that it would no longer honor its long-standing contract with the union. Ten months later, the advertising agency agreed to sign SAG-AFTRA’s new commercials contract.
SAG and AFTRA, which merged in 2012, went on strike together for the first time in 2016, against eleven American video game developers and publishers, which became the longest strike within SAG.
In 2000, before they merged, SAG and AFTRA issued a controversial six-month work stoppage over the protocol for paying actors who appear in TV commercials. Twenty years prior, SAG and AFTRA jointly called for a successful boycott against 1980s’ Emmy Awards, striking for an increase in minimum salaries.
How the ongoing writers’ strike factors in
In 1960, SAG went on strike against AMPTP over pay, joining the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which had already been on strike for more than a month with similar demands, largely over pay rates. That marked the first industry-wide strike in Hollywood.
In a historical echo, today, the WGA has been on strike since early May. If SAG-AFTRA’s demands are not met this time around, it will join the WGA on strike, bringing Hollywood to a near standstill. In preparation, SAG-AFTRA has called for volunteers to serve as strike captains, and WGA captains—already on strike at several studios—have offered training from the picket lines.
What this means for movies and TV shows
If SAG-AFTRA members do go on strike, any film or TV production that has not already been halted by the WGA strike will essentially shut down. Overseas productions, in particular, where studios have tried to continue shooting some shows without WGA writer-producers, are likely to feel the impact.

One plus one equals 15
Article written by Sigurður G. Valgeirsson for Morgunblaðið on the 18th of September 2012: https://timarit.is/page/6028253#page/n29/mode/2up
Brilliant "Hilmir Snær and Stefán shine in this show, exactly as they did at the end of the year 2000 and all the characters are memorable" says, among others. in a review of the play Stones in his Pockets
Stones in his Pockets by Marie Jones. Actors: Hilmir Snær Guðnason and Stefán Karl Stefánsson. Design and costumes: Elín Edda Árnadóttir, Lighting: Halldór Örn Óskarsson, Translation: Guðni Kolbeinsson. Director: Ian McElhinney, Assistant Director: Selma Björnsdóttir. Premiere on the big stage of the National Theater on 15th of September 2012.
It is a good example of how active our imaginations are, despite everything, that two actors, who hardly change their clothes and have no special props to help them, can playfully keep a large hall captivated for over two hours.
In order for this to be successful, however, you need both a good story and excellent actors, and that applies in this case. Stones in his Pockets takes place in a village in Ireland where a big movie is being filmed and many of the townspeople have a job as extras in it. The work is actually turning a Hollywood film on its head, showing what really happens to the supporting actors between the time the glossy film is created. The opposite is the plot of the blockbuster, its stars, director, assistant director and security guard - people who live in some kind of artificial world.
The work paints a picture of the poor employment situation and limited opportunities of the villagers, weak hopes and broken dreams. The main characters are Jake Quinn, played by Stefán Karl Stefánsson, and Charlie Conlon, played by Hilmir Snær Guðnason. In addition, the partners act as thirteen characters, so it can be said that this is a show with many people.
Jake Quinn was born and raised locally. He has tried his luck in the United States but came home again with his tail between his legs. Charile Conlon has been laid off and suffered trauma. The former is extremely heavy-handed and full of accusations against himself and others for everything that goes wrong, the other is a bit of a clown who tries to make fun of most things. Underneath, however, there is a difficult experience.
Hilmir Snær and Stefán shine in this show, exactly as they did at the end of 2000, and all the characters are memorable. I especially mention Mickey, an old and experienced supporting actor played by Stefán Karl, and Jack Campbell, Caroline's security guard, which Hilmir Snær fills in well. Hilmir Snær also plays Finn, who is insecure and has a slight stammer, with great genius so that you instantly recognize the character.
It's especially nice to see how those companies manage to portray women. Hilmir Snær treated the movie star Caroline Giovanni so well that there was a real electric atmosphere between her and Jake Quinn. Stefán Karl was also very entertaining as the ambitious Aisling. She is the third assistant director, but she is aiming higher.
The show is all very well executed and the transitions flow perfectly. We can thank Ian McElhinney, the experienced director of the work, who has directed it in many places with a good reputation, including when it was shown in Iceland last time.
One of the things that made this show especially fun was how the band played to the audience and how the audience was drawn into the piece. Among other things, one of the spectators was forced to become a willing participant to the considerable joy of those present. Then the dance act of those partners is fantastically elegant and fun. In short, it was a memorable evening with good work and even better actors.

In today's digital era, the United Kingdom has embraced technological advancements to streamline its immigration processes, introducing the electronic visa, or eVisa. This digital record simplifies the way travelers and remote workers manage their immigration status, offering a more efficient alternative to traditional paper-based visas. For individuals considering remote work or travel in the UK, understanding the eVisa system is crucial.
What is a UK eVisa?
A UK eVisa is an online record of your immigration status, detailing the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. To access your eVisa, you need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Once set up, you can view your eVisa and prove your immigration status as needed. It's important to note that using an eVisa does not alter your immigration status or the conditions attached to your stay. If you possess a physical immigration document, you can continue to use it until it expires.
Eligibility for a UK eVisa
To access a UK eVisa, you must have permission to stay in the UK for longer than six months, granted in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. However, you cannot obtain an eVisa if you:
Have a visa valid for less than six months, such as a visitor visa.
Hold an EU Settlement Scheme family permit.
Possess an electronic travel authorization (ETA).
Are exempt from immigration control, including diplomats or individuals with the 'right of abode'.
Before starting the application process, ensure you have a phone number and email address you can use consistently, as these will be required each time you prove your immigration status online. Additionally, having a valid passport and your visa application number, or a biometric residence permit (BRP) number, will facilitate the process.
Benefits of UK Visas Over Traditional Visas
The UK eVisa system offers several advantages over traditional visas:
Convenience: The entire application process is conducted online, eliminating the need for in-person visits to consulates or embassies.
Efficiency: Processing times for eVisas are generally faster, allowing for quicker travel arrangements.
Cost-Effectiveness: eVisas often have lower application fees compared to traditional visas, making them a more affordable option for travelers.
Security: Digital records reduce the risk of loss or damage associated with physical documents and can be easily accessed or shared when needed.
Remote Work and the UK eVisa
With the rise of remote working, many professionals are exploring opportunities to work from different locations worldwide. The UK has recognized this trend and, as of January 31, 2024, permits visitors to undertake activities related to their overseas employment remotely while in the UK, provided this is not the primary purpose of their visit. This means that while you can respond to emails, attend virtual meetings, or perform other remote tasks during your stay, your main reason for visiting should be another permitted activity, such as tourism or attending business meetings.
It's important to note that the UK does not currently offer a specific 'Digital Nomad' visa. Therefore, if your primary intention is to reside in the UK for an extended period solely to work remotely, you would need to explore other visa options that align with your circumstances.
Addressing Delayed UK Visas
Many applicants experience delays in visa processing due to high demand, administrative backlogs, or incomplete applications. To minimize potential issues:
Submit your application well in advance of your planned travel date.
Ensure all documents are correctly completed and submitted.
Regularly check for updates on processing times and application status.
Planning Your Stay as a Remote Worker
When planning a visit to the UK as a remote worker, consider the following:
Duration of Stay: Ensure your stay aligns with the permitted duration of your visa. Overstaying can lead to legal complications and affect future travel plans.
Financial Planning: Be prepared to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay without relying on income from remote work conducted during the visit.
Compliance with Visa Conditions: Adhere strictly to the conditions of your visa to avoid any legal issues. This includes not engaging in employment with UK-based companies unless explicitly permitted.
Conclusion
The UK's eVisa system represents a significant advancement in simplifying the immigration process for travelers and remote workers. By understanding the eligibility criteria, benefits, and regulations surrounding remote work, you can effectively plan your visit and make the most of your time in the UK. Always ensure that your primary purpose for visiting aligns with the permitted activities of your visa, and stay informed about any updates to UK immigration policies.
