Predicting the Future
Here I am with the weekly fresh review in “Let’s Listen to”! Today’s subject is the first and last mini-album by the young visual kei band Vanity Sicks, entitled Foretell the Future and released today (even on Spotify). If you don’t know them, they formed last year and are composed by Inz (vo.), the famous singer of the band Megamasso, Yuusuke (vo.), Vincent (gt.), Ash (ba.) and Takahiko (dr.), all former members of the rock band Sun of a Starve. And now... let’s review!
-Creeper: the mini-album starts with a track featuring an animated and beating electro-rock sound, where the vocals are alternated between energetic and screamed, in a catchy and interesting opener for the release. ---> 8.5/10
-Eternal Blue: the guitar opens this song, with a really good rhythm and alternated vocals, this time featuring a softer tone; the rhythm is driven by a good drumming and the melody is enjoyable, especially in the guitar solo. ---> 8.5/10
-Your Side: a clear piano kicks off the theme of this song, with limpid vocals and a bit of falsetto; then the drums kick off and Inz starts singing in rap style and in general the song flows pretty well, helped by a structured melody, especially in the guitar riffs; a really good ballad, with an interesting vocal interpretation and a warm classical guitar ending the theme. ---> 9/10
-Omou ga mama ni (As it is): Inz’s faster vocals open the song, accompained by incisive guitar riffs, for a strong and beating rock sound; once again there’s an alternation between soft and aggressive tones for a catchy and quite enjoyable theme. ---> 8.5/10
-Plus Ultra: the b-side of the debut single is opened by a fierce guitar, for a strong rock theme, featuring relevant electronic elements; the vocals are spoken and quite unregular, for a generic theme, which doesn’t deliver anything different from what heard so far. ---> 8/10
-Up to you: electronic beats and rapid rhythm characterize this song, in an atmosphere between the upbeat and the nostalgical, driven by positive and interesting vocals and a balanced melody, easy to listen. ---> 8.5/10
-White Ray of Hope: the debut song of the band ends the release, with an incisive beat which slowly opens the theme, with a fast guitar and a rapid rhythm given by the drums, maintaining the nostalgical vibe seen in the previous track, for a balanced ending song. ---> 8.5/10
Final Vote ---> 8.5/10
After the short hiatus of Megamasso, the vocalist Inzargi tried to do something new and closer to his fresher style, becoming the vocalist of this band, whose genre is far and close to his older one at the same time. In general the sound Vanity Sicks offer is a bumping electro-rock, with interesting technique and a deep vocal style, given by the great experience of the singer, here accompained by someone which was quite accustomed to dual singing. And following up two singles, they come out with their final release, as they will disband on July, gathering all their potential and bringing up here, for an interesting rock mini-album, which goes to entertain and nothing else. So if you want to hear Inzargi outside of his Megamasso world, you should listen to this release. A mini-album for who appreciates Inzargi’s vocal talent and wants to listen to an entertaining rock release.
That’s all folks! See you tomorrow for the weekly time-travel in “Throwback Thursday”!
Thanks for the reading!

(Rough English Trans.) Interview with ryo, Inzargi and Yuki (master+mind)
(CLICK HERE TO READ THE ORIGINAL!!)
---PAGE 1--- Interview by Kaori Kasai
——Please tell us when did you met each other.
Inzargi: I met Yuki on a drinking party about a year ago, right? Yuki: That’s it. Inzargi: After that we had gone out together several times. We had even done duets in those drinking parties. Yuki: Right! That’s where we gather with a lot of people and where we share impressions about our different occupations. Inzargi: Also, one day, in a store event, we overlapped places at a different hour and Yuki wrote me a farewell letter. I read it so gratefully on the backstage. (laughs) I met ryo during a photo session but this is the first time we actually have a chance to speak so I’m really looking forward to it. ryo : I’m looking forward to it too.
——When was that photograph session?
ryo : About 3 years ago? We made a photo session for the cover of a magazine and for that reason there were a lot of vocalists together.
——Since there was a photo session you couldn’t talk a lot, right?
Inzargi: Yeah. We were pretty hurried, right? ryo : It was all crowded and busy, kind of “since you already finished the arrangements (hair, clothing…), get together please”. ——I see. Yuki, ryo, when did you met? ryo : I’ve seen him several times but this is the first time we actually got a chance to have a proper talk. Yuki: That’s right. It’s the first time we can greet each other and talk properly so I’m looking forward to it. —— So this looks (“it’s almost”) as the first time you meet ryo. I want to hear your impressions about him. Yuki: (<- Suddenly changes the topic) On the contrary, I wanted to visit LOFT so I want to know what is the reason to have us on this casting… ——You are three very talented singers but I think you are all very different so I made this casting because I wanted to see 3 vocalists with different colors and their bands interacting and playing together.
Yuki: I see. If the bands that play differ too much from one another, the public wouldn’t enjoy it. Inzargi: I want to be spoiled by Yuki. (laughs) In fact, I used to listen to him. Yuki: Is that it? Inzargi: Yeah. (laughs) When we met I was really happy but I never imagined that we would be singing together. I like the stretch (high tones) of his singing voice so much and I can immediately recognize his voice. As a singer as well, I’m in part jealous about him but, at the same time, it also serves me as stimulus. ryo has a really “ROCK” image but I love the fact that I can actually see his mildness. I’m really happy for having the chance to sing with them. ryo : In my case, other people usually have the impression that I’m a guy from a Nagoya-kei band. Until now I’ve been in a lot of bands, using black costumes and having a minor atmosphere and I had, relatively, shared the same stage with bands with similar hair styles*. Of course, I know them both and I think their presence and skills as are singers are amazing, so I do wonder if It’s okay if I get in between them. I usually don’t have a chance like this so I would like to learn a lot from them. I guess my category will be naturally this (kind of Nagoya-kei?) but I think there’s still at least one thing I can extend (musically speaking) so I’m looking forward to it.
*He usually plays with bands with kind of similar styles that you can categorize as ‘dark’ or ‘gothic’ so the members of those bands usually share characteristics like black hair.

The Precious Covers
Here I am with another time-travel in “Throwback Thursday”! Today’s subject is the second album by Inzargi, the famous vocalist of the visual band Megamasso, which is a cover compilation. It is named Visualist -Precious Hits of V-Rock Cover Song- and it was released on 21st March 2012; it features the covers of twelve songs among the most famous Japanese ones, all re-arranged and taken under other light. And now... let’s review!
-Yuuwaku (Temptation) [Glay]: the opening track, about a love beyond every sin, starts with a traditional rhythm and Inzargi’s vocals are animated at the right level; an energic rock ballad, which honours the original one. ---> 8.5/10
-B・BLUE [BOØWY]: the following track, about a painful love, is more softer than the previous one and it features a pounding drum; also Inzargi softens himself, but it is anyway enjoyable, probably more than the original. ---> 8/10
-I for You [Luna Sea]: the protagonist loves none than his lover in this song, started by a sweet guitar; a slow and fascinating ballad, where Inzargi shows than he can do harder songs. ---> 9/10
-Winter, again [Glay]: a town in a winter setting is the main image of this iconic song, which maintains the idilliac and nostalgic features of the original; Inzargi’s performance fits very well with the rest, in a song with a soft rock sound. ---> 8.5/10
-Romance [Penicillin]: a mistaken love, as explained here, is the main theme of another iconic song, which maintains or improves its original style; Inzargi’s vocals, more childish than expected, make this song nearer to Penicillin than ever, apart from the guitar interlude, which is more virtuous. ---> 9.5/10
-Spark [The Yellow Monkey]: a romantic night story is the main image of this song, started by a strong drum and an enraging guitar, where Inzargi sings in a different way compared to the original, with obscure and vibrant vocals, giving the track a different touch. ---> 9.5/10
-Another World [Gackt]: a world out of reality is the main image of this song, leaded by an energetic rock sound and by animated than ever vocals by Inzargi; a simple but enjoyable cover. ---> 8/10
-1/3 no junjou kanjou (1/3 Pure Heart Emotion) [SIam Shade]: love overcomes every imagination in this song. featuring a simple and happy rhythm; Inzargi sings in the same vibe of the original, which is anyway enjoyable. ---> 8.5/10
-High Pressure [T.M. Revolution]: summer is the love season in this song, where a whirling guitar opens to a rapid and playful rhythm; another simple but energetic track. ---> 8.5/10
-X [X Japan]: the anthem of the most important visual kei band, which gives strenght and hope is the core of this song, which has a stronger tone; Inzargi sings in an aggressive style, making this cover really awesome. ---> 9/10
-Forever Love [X Japan]: the eternal love is possibie in the best cover ever made in this album; maintaining the structure and the lenght of the original, Inzargi gives a new vocal identity to the ballad, showing his real talent in deep high notes and unexpected vibrato; a sublime work, which holds the comparison with the original. ---> 10/10
-However [Glay]: love is a bond which connects everyone indissolubly in this final cover, which is still on the ballad vibe, with a fresh and suggestive rhythm; a sweet track which fits the ending part. ---> 8.5/10
Final Vote ---> 9/10
In conclusion, Inzargi, homaging the great songs of the past, made a worth figure of himself. His incredible talent, which in his earlier years in Megamasso was not so exalted, goes from animated to mature singing, enclosing vibrato, high notes and vocal games; shortly Inzargi is a complete vocalist in his genre. And his brief solo phase helped him in being more aware of his skills and in fact since that time Megamasso grew in talent and creativity and that is why I started loving them more. I hope that Inzargi will improve more and more, because he is awesome in singing. An album for who wants to know Inzargi as singer, through the past hits of Japanese rock.
That’s all folks! See you on Sunday with a week-end special in “Focusing on...”!
Thanks for reading!
