J11 - Samedi 10 Juin

West Coast; Gairloch and Inverewe GardensÂ
Improved weather on the west coast so we went to Inverewe Botanical Gardens. Beautiful gardens that take advantage of the location on the very temperate and wet west coast to grow lots of plants further north than normal. It was great, but as we left I said, there's nothing in this garden that would grown in Madison Wisconsin. We took a boat ride that was supposed to show aquatic wildlife in the area, but the was't much of that. It was a good day to be on the water though.
Steve and Carolyn came down with some sort of stomach bug so we took the afternoon off and they skipped the rest of the meals that day. I took a short walk around the Gairloch area.

KM 2040 - Isle of Skye
Kompliment an Heikos Leistung!

It is located just to the north of Poolewe in Wester Ross, and is noted for the breadth of its collection. Scottish Passes and a Submarine - Days 11 and 12
So today we say goodbye to daddy and wave him off on an early bus towards Inverness. Itâs now just the child and I!
Our first stop was at Corrieshalloch gorge. It was deserted and we enjoyed a slightly damp wander along it. They have put some great viewing platforms in and it is worth a visit.
Then it was on to Inverewe gardens. Iâve said it before and I will say it again. National Trust membership is so worth it when you spend any period of time on the road. The colours of the Hydrangeas were just stunning and wildly varied in colour. Although the garden is past its proverbial best, thereâs still plenty to look at. We wandered around whilst Florence did their excellent children's trail quiz.
Then we had a brief stop at the quaint âbutton bothyâ - amazing what can be done with buttons!. Then a stop atâ the Gairloch museum. A lovely pace that captures the seafaring history of this area. I asked here about the possibility of seeing a Golden Eagle but It sounds like they donât tend to frequent here now, but once they did.
Driving onto the Applecross peninsula, I found a truly amazing WC spot with a most stunning view over the sea to Skye (thereâs a song in there somewhere! ;-))
We watched as the rain clouds moved in obscuring and the revealing Skye, Rassay and Rona. This was occasionaly punctuated by shafts of sunlight and of course, rainbows! Just let me say that this picture does no justice at all to the marvels of this coastline.
As the Sun went down we were then treated to a âfirstâ - we saw a submarine casually cruising along. Having never seen a submarine before, this was strangely exciting!
We then had the worst, blowing and rocking van night ever! I was convinced it was going to rip my Skylight off but come the morning, all was well.
We set off into Applecross and then i decided to take Daenerys up the pass to the Bealach na ba viewpoint.
Sods law occurred and here was our view from the top:
So, one for another day I think!
After our descent we stopped at a lovely waterside cafe at Lochcharron and found an excellent tiny handmade crocheted and textile goods shop. a little further on - the lady there was lovely and her handicrafts very reasonably priced so keep an eye out for it if you are ever that way!
Deciding that we were now âhard-coreâ pass travellers, I drove on to Ratagan Pass to get a view - this time it paid off!
After a brief visit to restock at the Aldi in Fort William, I beat a retreat from the peoples and drove to Glencoe We went for a wander to âSignla Rockâ and then I went to park up at Glen Etive for the night, which is near the Glencoe chair lift.Â
This was a site I had used previously on my trip to Scotland. However, on this occasion, we were quickly joined by another camper which then had some soap opera blaring out of their TV for a good hour. To make matters worse a motorhome then rocked up - clearly looking for somewhere to stay. There wasn't enough room left on the small patch of land and as it was now very dark and seeing they were having a dilemma. I got out and offered to move my van up so they could just about squish in. They were French and my French is as crap as their English but we managed to get things sorted.
Florence decided to spend the evening excavating gemstones from a block of plaster of Paris. As this is the van, one has to improvise, so her sunglasses became her âgogglesâ and some sheets of toilet toll became her face mask!
With the weather looking to turn colder and snowier in the next couple of days. I decided to haul ass back down South and home. Daenerys has done it again!
