In his last semester of third year Midoriya has trouble getting an internship (again) because every person he interned with first year is dead or retired, and at this point he’s down to the last dregs of the OFA ember, and nobody really wants Deku to come and get himself hurt at their agency on their watch.

He gets one (1) offer, out kind of in the middle of nowhere, and he doesn’t want to complain about it, but the hero running this tiny agency is kind of a terrible hero. And also a terrible person. And there isn’t currently enough staff in the building for this fact to affect anybody —except for the new hero intern.

And Midoriya’s stuck in this interesting position of knowing that he’s being treated unfairly, but also that if he tells U.A. he’ll get pulled out of the internship, and he probably won’t get another one. For better or worse, this is his last chance to do hero work. And for that, he’s willing to put up with quite a lot.

What if Sorahiko was told to keep Kotaro and take care of him?

Look, this answer isn’t going to reflect favorably on Sorahiko, and I’m definitely projecting, so take this with a grain of salt: Sorahiko would do it, but he wouldn’t be happy about it, and Kotarou wouldn’t be either. It’s a worse scenario compared to Sorahiko guiltily searching for and obtaining guardianship over Kotarou post-Nana’s death.

I don’t think Sorahiko wanted to raise a kid. He clearly shared some responsibility with Nana re: fostering Kotarou (forever haunted by, “Shimura, the decision we made…”, by the way), and Nana didn’t entrust Toshinori’s education to him until she was forced to. Sorahiko didn’t want kids.

Kotarou’s gone by the time Toshinori’s in the picture. Nana fosters him out for the purpose of removing him from All for One’s list of vulnerable targets. The degree of separation if Sorahiko took Kotarou wouldn’t be anything meaningful UNLESS Sorahiko removed himself and Kotarou from Nana’s vicinity entirely.

If Toshinori hadn’t been with them (and inherited OFA), I do think Sorahiko would have chosen to die with Nana. Nana would probably say, “You have to take this Quirk and go, please,” and Sorahiko would be selfish and stick by her side to the bitter end. He’s not a very good hero in that sense.

Let’s assume Kotarou knows Sorahiko is his mom’s friend. Let’s assume that Kotarou refuses to let go of the Shimura name even at a young age, which either obliges Sorahiko to play along or to put his foot down and make Kotarou resent him further. Let’s assume that Toshinori’s innate optimism and sunshine did have an effect on Sorahiko’s attitude, even in spite of the grief post-Nana, and so without Toshinori’s influence, Sorahiko is just a resentful asshole in charge of raising an elementary schooler. ON TOP of them being potential contenders for All for One’s grudge game against Nana in particular. This is not the recipe for a happy found family.

The resentment Toshinori and Sorahiko have for each other is like, because neither of them are Nana. Toshinori wants his mom, Sorahiko wants his partner/friend, and they see each other in her spot and utterly failing to justify their being there. But the resentment is somewhat leavened by the fact that they know she died for them to get out, so it’s resentment == shared grief. And Toshinori gets booted to American soon after, so it’s not like they’re stewing in the same space for years and years.

With Kotarou, it’s the same issue of resenting each other for similar reasons, except Kotarou’s, you know. A child. So you’d expect Sorahiko to be the mature, reasonable adult but NO. Sorahiko is saddled with raising a kid he didn’t want, the kid doesn’t want him, and neither of them know what’s happened to Nana because Nana went off-grid/had no media coverage/historical records after she split off. No closure except for a letter and photo for Kotarou, and slowly fading memories. 

In a world where Kotarou still managed to grow up, marry Nao, have kids and invite Nao’s parents to live with them in suburbia--Sorahiko is definitely excluded from the family. Oh, Sorahiko is keeping tabs, but he’s more or less exiled to his should-be-condemned apartment building. Depending on whether you’re looking for a fix-it or not, Sorahiko finds his not-grandson before All for One. 

Funny parallel: Kotarou’s refusal to acknowledge Nana || Hosu Arc Sorahiko’s lie of omission to Izuku regarding Nana’s gender and identity. The possible Watsonian explanation to this is that Horikoshi might not have designed Nana yet, but also--Sorahiko. Speak up. Sorahiko’s habit of not explaining shit is generational.
