An urgent appeal for sending blood units from outside the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip appeals to all international and Arab institutions, especially the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Red Crescent Society in the Arab and Islamic countries, and the Arab Blood Transfusion Services to urgently work on providing blood units and their components from all blood groups due to the dire need to save the lives of patients and the wounded.

The Ministry of Health suffers from a lack of basic materials for blood donation, whether empty blood bags or viral testing materials, as well as blood group tests, as our people in the Gaza Strip have donated more than 40,000 blood units during the aggression despite the harsh conditions they are living in from displacement and starvation.

We call on all relevant parties to respond urgently to our appeal and send large quantities of life-saving blood units for the wounded and sick in the Gaza Strip.

About World Blood Donor Day:

Transfusion of blood and blood products save millions of lives every year. Blood and blood products are essential components in the proper management of women suffering from bleeding associated with pregnancy and childbirth; children suffering from severe anemia due to malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders, inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions; victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters and accidents; as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures. Although the need for blood and blood products is universal, there is a marked difference in the level of access to safe blood and blood products across and within countries. In many countries, blood services face the additional challenge of making sufficient blood and blood products available, while also ensuring its quality and safety.

In May 2005, during the Fifty-Eighth World Health Assembly, ministers of health from across the world made a unanimous declaration of commitment and support towards voluntary blood donation. Through resolution WHO 58.13, they designated World Blood Donor Day as an annual event to be held each year on 14 June. The resolution furthermore urges Member States to implement, and support well organized, nationally-coordinated and sustainable blood programmes with appropriate regulatory oversight. The support requires that governments provide adequate financing for high-quality blood donation services and for the expansion of these services so that sufficient safe blood can be collected to meet the needs of patients. In 2009, experts in transfusion medicine, policy-makers and nongovernmental representatives from 40 countries formulated the Melbourne Declaration, which set up a goal for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.

It was first initiated and established to be celebrated annually on 14th of June by “the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies” in the year 2004. World Blood Donor Day was officially established by the WHO with its 192 Member States in the month of May in 2005 at the 58th World Health Assembly in order to motivate all the countries worldwide to thank the blood donors for their precious step, promote voluntary, safe and unpaid blood donations to ensure the sufficient blood supplies.

World Blood Donor Day celebration brings a precious opportunity to all donors for celebrating it on national and global level as well as to commemorate the birthday anniversary of the Karl Landsteiner (a great scientist who won the Nobel Prize for his great discovery of the ABO blood group system).

World Health Organization is aimed to obtain the sufficient blood supplies from the voluntary and unpaid blood donors all over the world by 2021.

According to the statistics, it has been noted that only 62 countries are getting sufficient blood supplies from the voluntary and unpaid blood donors whereas 40 countries are still dependent for the blood donations on the patient’s family member or paid donors. It is celebrated to motivate voluntary blood donors in rest of the countries worldwide.

To make the blood donation act a precious gift to the receivers and get new life.

WHO run this campaign by organizing many activities in all countries highlighting people’s stories who need immediate blood donation to continue their heart beat.

It is celebrated to say lots of thank to the voluntary and unpaid blood donors all around the world for saving millions of lives.

It is celebrated to fulfill the 100% voluntary and unpaid blood donation need worldwide.

It is celebrated to motivate blood donors for safe blood donation for saving the life of mothers and babies (country’s future).

It is celebrated to reduce the death rates (mortality rate) because of insufficient blood supply. Approximately 800 women are dying off due to malnourished pregnancy, childbirth-related complications, severe bleeding during or after delivery and etc.

To motivate voluntary blood donors through educational programmes and campaigns in order to strengthen the blood transfusion services.

Focus of this year’s campaign

The theme of this year’s campaign is blood donation and universal access to safe blood transfusion, as a component of achieving universal health coverage. We have developed the slogan “Safe blood for all” to raise awareness of the universal need for safe blood in the delivery of health care and the crucial roles that voluntary donations play in achieving the goal of universal health coverage.  The theme strongly encourages more people all over the world to become blood donors and donate blood regularly – actions which are key to building a strong foundation of sustainable national blood supplies that are sufficient to meeting the needs of all patients requiring transfusion.

The day and the theme is also a call to action to all governments, national health authorities and national blood services to provide adequate resources and put in place systems and infrastructures to increase collection of blood from voluntary, regular unpaid blood donors; to provide quality donor care; to promote and implement appropriate clinical use of blood, and to set up systems for the oversight and surveillance on the whole chain of blood transfusion.

The objectives of this year’s campaign are:

to celebrate and thank individuals who donate blood and to encourage those who have not yet donated blood to start donating;

to highlight the need for committed, year-round blood donation, to maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusion;

to focus attention on donor health and the quality of donor care as critical factors in building donor commitment and a willingness to donate regularly;

to demonstrate the need for universal access to safe blood transfusion and provide advocacy on its role in the provision of effective health care and in achieving the goal of universal health coverage;

to mobilize support at national, regional and global levels among governments and development partners to invest in, strengthen and sustain national blood programmes.

people with traumatic injuries in emergencies, disasters and accidents; and

patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures.

The need for blood and blood products is universal, but access to safe blood and blood products varies greatly across and within countries.

In many countries, it is challenging for blood services to make sufficient blood and blood products available, while also ensuring its quality and safety.

Governments, national health authorities and national blood services must work together to:

ensure systems and infrastructure are in place to increase collection of blood from voluntary, regular unpaid donors;

establish and strengthen quality assurance systems for blood and blood products to ensure safe blood and blood products;

provide quality donor care;

promote and implement appropriate clinical use of blood; and

oversee the whole chain of blood transfusion.

Focus attention on donor health and care and provide quality service to blood donors.

Who Can Give Blood?

Most people can give blood if they are in good health. There are some basic requirements one  need to fulfill in order to become a blood donor.  Below are some basic eligibility guidelines:

Age

You are aged between 18 and 65.

In some countries national legislation permits 16–17 year-old to donate provided that they fulfill the physical and hematological criteria required and that appropriate consent is obtained.

In some countries, regular donors over the age of 65 may be accepted at the discretion of the responsible physician. The upper age limit in some countries are 60.

Weight

You weigh at least 50 kg.

In some countries, donors of whole blood donations should weigh at least 45 kg to donate 350 ml ± 10%.

Health

You must be in good health at the time you donate.

You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection.

If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure.  If the body piercing was performed by a registered health professional and any inflammation has settled completely, you can donate blood after 12 hours.

If you have visited the dentist for a minor procedure you must wait 24 hours before donating; for major work wait a month.

You must not donate blood If you do not meet the minimum hemoglobin level for blood donation:

A test will be administered at the donation site. In many countries, a hemoglobin level of not less than 12.0 g/dl for females and not less than 13.0 g/dl for males as the threshold.

Travel: World Blood Donor Day

Travel to areas where mosquito-borne infections are endemic, e.g. malaria, dengue and Zika virus infections, may result in a temporary deferral.

Many countries also implemented the policy to defer blood donors with a history of travel or residence for defined cumulative exposure periods in specified countries or areas, as a measure to reduce the risk of transmitting variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) by blood transfusion.

Behaviors

You must not give blood:

If you engaged in “at risk” sexual activity in the past 12 months

Individuals with behaviors below will be deferred permanently:

Have ever had a positive test for HIV (AIDS virus)

Have ever injected recreational drugs.

In the national blood donor selection guidelines, there are more behavior eligibility criteria. Criteria could be different in different countries.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Following pregnancy, the deferral period should last as many months as the duration of the pregnancy.

It is not advisable to donate blood while breast-feeding. Following childbirth, the deferral period is at least 9 months (as for pregnancy) and until 3 months after your baby is significantly weaned (i.e. getting most of his / her nutrition from solids or bottle feeding).

Every two seconds, someone in the world needs blood. Health systems worldwide are constantly in need of safe and adequate blood supplies to treat patients, yet there aren’t enough regular blood donors around the world.

Donating blood costs nothing, but for someone out there, it could mean everything. So, here are some things everyone needs to know about blood donation:

1. Your blood can be used in more ways than you expect to help someone in need

While most people assume that blood is only helpful in surgeries and trauma, many other patients require blood, such as cancer patients, burn victims, transplant patients and those with blood loss, anaemia, and other blood disorders.

2. Every drop of blood that you donate can help save a life in some way

Human blood has four main components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma, and each element is essential to the human body’s function. Check out the infographic below to learn more about the four types of blood donation – whole blood donation, red cell donation, plasma donation, and platelet donation.

3. Your blood forms new cells to replace what you donate

Each pint donated (about 470ml) is about 8% to 13% of the average adult’s total blood volume. However, one of the many wonders of the human body is its ability to restore donated blood. The human body can replace this volume within 24 to 48 hours and replenishes the red blood cells and iron lost in 10 to 12 weeks.

4. There is never enough blood

About one in seven people entering a hospital need blood, and the short lifespan of blood collected also means a constant blood donation supply is necessary. Red blood cells have a shelf life of up to 42 days, while platelets have a shorter shelf life of five to seven days.

5. Donating blood is as easy as 4 simple steps

6. You could be a speciality donor

Specialty donors are donors whose blood can be used for specific recipients and are usually in high demand. People with an AB-negative blood type have the rarest blood type in the world, and these donors are unique because their plasma is transfusable into patients of any blood type.

You are also a speciality donor if your blood type is O-negative, a universal red-cell donor for people with any blood type. Blood donors with this type a relatively rare and provide the most in-demand blood type used in emergencies and situations where a patient’s blood type is unknown.

7. It’s not just the patients who benefit from blood donation. There are perks for donors too

While blood donation won’t become a weight loss fad anytime soon, studies have found that donors could burn up to 650 calories per pint of blood donated. Studies have also shown various other health benefits from donating blood, such as maintaining heart health and lowering cancer risk.

In addition, donors get free blood screenings as all donated blood goes through rigorous testing to ensure its safety. In some countries like Malaysia, regular blood donors also benefit from free health screenings, Hepatitis B vaccine shots, and even outpatient treatment.

Of course, no perk is more important than the possibility of helping to save a life, and in case you didn’t know, one pint of blood can save up to three lives.

8. There is no substitute for human blood

Despite the progress of the modern world that has paved the way for medical marvels like artificial hearts and other synthetic organs, nothing has come close to replacing human blood. If that doesn’t tell you how crucial human blood is, we’re not sure what will!

Donating blood is an act of solidarity. So, let’s join the effort and help save as many lives as possible.

A Defense of Biological Sex - The Paradox Institute

Imagine, for a moment, if we as a society replaced the biological categories of male and female with socially defined identities. In this world, no person, system, or institution would differentiate between male and female. Instead, each individual defines themselves according to their own internal subjective perception. It may sound progressive or inclusive, but what would happen? Here’s nine reasons why biological sex (male and female) must be defended. 

#1. Truth - Science matters, and reality matters. The famous theoretical physicist Richard Feynman once said, "It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong." We progress by testing our assumptions against reality. If reality doesn’t agree, we must adjust our assumptions. Holding onto incorrect theories in the face of nature leads to nature roaring back with a vengeance.

#2. Reproduction - 1.2 billion years old, sexual reproduction is fundamental to life. In humans, as in most animals and plants, reproduction occurs through anisogamy, the fusion of two gametes which differ in size and form. Males develop a reproductive system organized around small gametes (sperm), and females develop a reproductive system organized around large gametes (ova). Without this system, Homo sapiens, and most other animals, would not exist. As two evolutionary biologists write in their paper, Gamete competition, gamete limitation, and the evolution of the two sexes, "The question of the origin of the two sexes is equal to the question of why do gametes come in two different sizes."

#3. Evolution - The existence of two sexes shaped our physical and cognitive evolution as a species. Sexual selection pressures produced the dimorphism of male and female bodies, led to the evolution of our brains, and built entire societies. The development of culture, art, and technology are, in part, the result of sexual selection on creativity and intelligence. In his book, The Mating Mind, evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller writes, "The human mind’s most impressive abilities are like the peacock’s tail: they are courtship tools, evolved to attract and entertain sexual partners." Thus, to understand ourselves as a species requires us to understand the evolution of the two sexes.

#4. Medicine - Understanding sex differences is critical for the application and development of safe and effective medical practices. For instance, emergency medicine must identify the sex of the patient for appropriate drug dosages and blood transfusions; sex-specific diseases such as prostate cancer in males and endometriosis in females require knowledge of the reproductive tract; and sex-related diseases and psychiatric illnesses, such as depression, anxiety disorders and personality disorders, manifest differently in males and females. Thus, sex differences in gene expression, hormone levels, and the reproductive system influence the effectiveness of medical treatments, pharmaceutical drugs, and psychiatric practices. Without understanding the genetic, hormonal, and psychological differences within and between males and females, medical research fails to function.

#5. Sports - Competitive sports are divided on the basis of sex for a reason. Compared to the average female, the average male has 33% more lower body muscle mass, 40% more upper body muscle mass, and 57% more grip strength. Plot a graph of grip strength data points, and you’ll find that the strongest 10% of females can only beat the bottom 10% of males. Overall, the male performance advantage compared to females is 10-50% depending on the sport. Elimination of biological sex as a criterion for sports marks the end of the female sports category.

#6. Crime - Informed public policy requires an accurate understanding of crime statistics, including sex differences in crime rates. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of violent crime, including aggravated assault, robbery, murder, and rape, is committed by males. In the United States, men commit 77% of aggravated assaults, 87% of robberies, 87% of murders, and 98% of rapes. Without tracking crime statistics by sex, policies such as single-sex spaces, designed to protect women and girls from predatory males, would have no statistical foundation.

#7. Safety and Privacy - Separating males and females into single-sex public bathrooms, changing rooms, and prisons, where people undress and are vulnerable, increases the safety of females from actions of predatory males, and it retains the privacy and dignity of both sexes. Where such distinctions between male and female spaces are violated, injustice follows. For example, in UK swimming pool and sports-center changing rooms, from 2017-2018, 90% of reported sexual assaults, harassment, and voyeurism happened in unisex facilities. Only 10% occurred in single-sex changing rooms. This pattern continues when males are sent to female prisons. In Wakefield, England, in 2017, a male rapist was admitted into a female prison. Why? Because he identified as a woman. While there, he sexually assaulted two female inmates. In 2019, 1 in 50 male prisoners in the UK claimed to be women. What would happen if those male inmates were also sent to female only prisons? Without single-sex spaces, the safety and privacy for women and girls would be lost.

#8. Fighting Injustice - Females across the world are subjected to sex-specific injustices. Practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), sex-selective abortions, and sex slavery are still common throughout the world. Take female genital mutilation. Concentrated in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, it is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have experienced FGM. Many countries have rates over 70%. Abstract A simple, colorimetric assay method has been developed for deferoxamine mesylate and a related bifunctional chelating agent, p-SCN-DFO. A classic back-titration is performed where an excess amount of a standardized zirconium solution is added to the chelating agent solution. The excess zirconium is then titrated with standard EDTA. A qualification study was undertaken to evaluate the integrity of the method. Accuracy, specificity, and precision were evaluated and found to be excellent. The method is traced back to an analytical primary standard thus avoiding the need to create and use compound-specific reference standards. Introduction An assay method is a typical quality control test for both raw materials and products in the pharmaceutical industry. It measures the amount of the target substance present in a material. Tracing an assay test to a primary standard lends a high degree of accuracy to the analysis. The reason is primary standards are extremely pure, stable, and have no waters of hydration. Over the years the American Chemical Society has defined several reagents as primary standards. Potassium dichromate and sodium oxalate are primary standards for redox titrations. Tris(hydroxymethyl)amino methane (TRIS) and Potassium hydrogen phthalate are acid-base primary standards. Calcium carbonate is a primary standard for chelometric titrations. Assay tests can also be traced to established reference standards. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) [1] provides reference standards (RS) for official articles in the USP or National Formulary (NF). An RS is typically specified in a monograph for use in the Assay test or an Identification test. An RS is considered 100.0% pure for quantitative applications unless a calculation value for an adjustment is stated on the label. For example, if a specific HPLC purity test shows the purity of the RS is 98.1%, a multiplier of 0.981 must be incorporated into an assay test. USP RSs are available for purchase for legal metrology purposes. The USP states that per the International Vocabulary of Metrology, they are defined as reference standards [2]. There exists a United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monograph for Deferoxamine Mesylate (DFO) [3]. The drug substance is used to treat sudden iron poisoning. It is also used to treat high levels of iron because of numerous blood transfusions. The USP monograph for DFO describes an assay test that is based on the use of a reference standard (Deferoxamine Mesylate RS). There is great value when scientists on different sides of the world can test a product to the same standard. However, since RSs typically lack the chemical properties of a primary standard, assay tests that can be traceable to a primary standard are inherently superior. There is no USP monograph for the related bifunctional chelating agent, p-SCN-DFO. It does not fall under the “official article” definition by the USP [4] That is, it is not considered a drug product, drug substance, dietary ingredient, dietary supplement, excipient, compounded preparation, other ingredient, device, or part of a device. As a result, there is no USP reference standard. DFO and its derivatives (e.g., p-SCN-DFO) are used as raw materials for bioconjugations. They can be conjugated to a peptide or antibody. Both compounds are commonly considered raw materials, critical raw materials, or registered starting materials when used in conjugations. For quality assurance purposes, however, the regulations of a drug substance are commonly placed upon them. Regardless of how they are considered, having an assay test with an appropriate specification on the material is a good idea.

A second goal of this work was to incorporate the use of a standardized zirconium solution into the assay test. Both DFO and p-SCN-DFO can be attached to antibodies and peptides for PET imaging with Zr-89. [5-8] Use of standardized zirconium solution can then demonstrate the molecules’ ability to bind zirconium [9]. The last goal was to qualify the assay method. In the early stages of drug substance development, analytical methods must be based on sound science. When a higher degree of confidence in an analytical method is desired, the methods are qualified. Down the road, when the highest degree of confidence in methods is required, validation is undertaken. The ICH Guidance Document Q2(R1) contains strict requirements for what must go into validating an analytical method [10], the requirements for qualifying a method are not defined. In short, a qualified method is a subset of a validated method. It gives the user more confidence in the reliability of the analytical results [11]. Much debate can go into what subset is appropriate to carry out. Our decision and justification are discussed. Materials and Methods The following reagents were ACS grade: ZrOCl2-8H2O, DMSO, EDTA disodium salt, xylenol orange, nitric acid, calcium carbonate, and hydroxy naphthol blue. Calcium carbonate is a chelometric standard with an assay of 99.95-100.05% on a dried basis. Deferoxamine mesylate was purchased from Millipore Sigma. The compound p-SCN-DFO is available as catalog number B-705 from Macrocyclics Inc. Deferoxamine mesylate RS was purchased from the USP and is catalog number 1166003. Class A volumetric flasks and pipets were used for critical volumes. The quantities used were chosen to optimize the number of significant figures while minimizing the quantity of materials needed for the test.A single EDTA solution was prepared and used by all analysts. Any error associated with this solution preparation or standardization is imparted to all assay test results equally. The solution was standardized using the calcium carbonate chelometric standard after drying. Hydroxy naphthol blue was used as in indicator. A sharp color change from purple to blue denotes the endpoint. Strict instructions for carrying out a test can be found in the supporting information. The zirconium assay method that was developed is a classic back titration. Excess standardized zirconium solution is present in a solution of DFO or p-SCN-DFO. The excess zirconium is titrated with a standardized EDTA solution. Xylenol orange is used as the indicator. A sharp color change from pinkish orange to yellow denotes the endpoint. Based on the volume of EDTA, the concentration of zirconium, and the concentration of EDTA, an apparent formula weight of the original solid DFO or p-SCN-DFO can be calculated. The ratio of the theoretical value to the calculated formula weight can then give an assay value. Strict instructions for carrying out a test can be found in supporting information. Three zirconium solutions were prepared. Analyst one used zirconium solution number one to perform all his/her assay tests on DFO and p-SCN-DFO. Analyst two used zirconium solution two and so on. The titrator that was used was an SI Analytics TITRONIC Basic. The burette holds 20mL and can dose in 0.01mL increments. Since its purchase, the instrument has routinely been tested to meet a 0.5% RSD for dosing small and large volumes. Since the endpoint can be determined with the naked eye, the assay test is performed by manual dosing. However, the titration could be automated with the incorporation of a photo rode if desired. For a residue on ignition test, a crucible with cover was placed at 900°C for two hours to clean. Solid

ZrOCl2-8H2O was dried to obtain an easily weighable solid that had a formula of approximately ZrOCl2- 4H2O based on the results obtained. This solid was weighed in the crucible after cooling. The solid was placed in the furnace for a total of 4 hours. Assuming the residue that remains is pure ZrO2, the percentage Zr in the original solid can be calculated.

Results and Discussion Assay Method Many colorimetric methods have been developed over the years for the determination of zirconium including those in the presence of interfering ions. [12-20] No method was found in the literature that worked for our application. Hundreds of titrations with varying conditions were carried out before settling on the optimal conditions. The method has many of the hallmarks of an ideal colorimetric titration. The titration can be performed quickly (i.e., minutes) so there is no long wait for equilibrium to be achieved. The method is colorimetric so there is no need for a UV/VIS instrument to determine an endpoint. The method is a classic complexometric method that uses EDTA as titrant, so no precipitation/filtration steps are required. The method uses commercial ACS reagents, so no expensive fine chemicals are needed. Lastly, solution preparations are simplified to dissolving solids in aqueous/DMSO solutions. No tricky heating or transfer steps that can add error are needed. The final conditions developed for the DFO and p-SCN-DFO assay test are found in (Tables 1,2). Due to the limited solubility of p-SCN-DFO in water, its sample preparation differs slightly. Conditions in (Table 1,2) are considered the 100% level. The order of addition is critical to prevent the zirconium from turning into an unreactive form in solution. Thus, the solutions or solids must be added in order from top to bottom.Preparation of Zirconium Solution The preparation of solutions of many metal ions can easily be prepared from their chloride or nitrate salts. The preparation of zirconium solutions is not straightforward. Unlike some transition metals, zirconium does not form a simple aqua ion in solution. The aqueous speciation depends on several factors such as pH, concentration, and counterions. [21-25] This work does not attempt to identify what species exist in solution under the conditions employed. It was sufficient to demonstrate the conditions we used were repeatable when preparing solutions. It was critical to prepare a zirconium solution that can easily be prepared and standardized. Originally, a NIST-traceable zirconium standard was tested. These standards are commonly used for ICP quantification of zirconium. Despite their preparation in acidic solutions, we could not come close to the zirconium value listed on the certificate of analysis. The solution preparation of this standard is not reliable for our purposes. Instead, we decided to prepare our own solution from ACS grade chemicals. The best solution preparation was made by dissolving ZrOCl2-8H2O in 1.0N nitric acid. ZrOCl2-8H2O was chosen over ZrO (NO3)2-xH2O because the latter is difficult to dissolve in acid solutions. It can be dissolved in a reasonable time only after heating. ZrOCl2-8H2O, on the other hand, dissolves readily in acidic solutions. Nitric acid was chosen over hydrochloric acid. When zirconium solutions are prepared in hydrochloric acid, the titration endpoint takes minutes. While it is a sharp endpoint, each drop of titrant near the end takes minutes to discern if the endpoint was reached. Since not every analyst has the same amount of patience, the nitric acid solution preparation was chosen instead. As a result, endpoints are both sharp and immediate. Regarding acid content, 1.0N acid was optimal although 2N HNO3 was also acceptable. When zirconium solutions were prepared in 0.1N HNO3 or less, or in >2N HNO3, the endpoint was unclear. It was critical to verify all the zirconium in prepared solutions is in a form that can react with EDTA, DFO, and p-SCN-DFO. A residue on ignition (ROI) test was used as a separate method to verify the results of the titration.

Three sources of ZrOCl2-8H2O were used to prepare and standardize three solutions of zirconium. The same sources of ZrOCl2-8H2O were tested for ROI. The % Zr was calculated using both methods. The results agreed to ≤ 0.8% absolute. This is a very good agreement for the comparison of two different methods. Consequently, we believe all the zirconium in solution is available to take part in the reaction.
