Sasa tells: "In this series I have gathered works I took in winter. I live in Canada, and this season here can be a fertile terrain for meditative albeit fiercely cold walks. I find winter accentuates the graphic qualities of nature, while offering an invitation into a contemplative state enriched by silence."

"Sasa was born and lived in Budapest, Hungary, before moving to Canada. After completing her M.A. degree in Art History and working as a Curatorial Assistant at the National Gallery of Canada, she returned to study—this time graphic design, which has been her vocation ever since. In tandem with graphic design, her interest in and passion for photography has been growing stronger through the years. Her album, Of Trees and Birds and Snow and Silence, was published in 2015. Since then, she has won several international photography awards, and has participated in both solo and juried group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, and South Korea. Her works have been published and used for cover pages in books, albums, blogs, posters, literary journals and photo magazines, including her photograph in David Gibson: 100 Great Street Photographs (Munich, London, New York: Prestel, 2017), D. Tyler Bennett: The Coffee House Anthology—A Meeting Place for the Arts (Charnwood Arts, UK, 2016) as well as in LensCulture and Lomography Magazine, among others. Her photographs have also been shown in exhibitions worldwide, such as in the international juried exhibition at the Kiscelli Museum in Budapest, Hungary, a venue of the 2019 Budapest Photo Festival, and the exhibition of over 30 of her works at the ArtReach Gallery in Portland, Oregon, in 2021."

Michael John Gorman named MIT Museum director

MIT has appointed Michael John Gorman the Mark R. Epstein (Class of 1963) Director of the recently re-imagined MIT Museum.

Gorman replaces longtime museum director John Durant, who stepped down in 2023. Originally from Ireland, Gorman is the founding director of BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern in Munich, Germany, a newly established innovative center and museum space for life sciences and environment. Since 2015, he has been responsible for the development of the center’s vision, exhibition strategy, and operations and festivals combining science and the arts. He is also a tenured university professor for life sciences in society at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.  

Gorman was the founding director of Science Gallery at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, a groundbreaking public space for innovation, science, and the arts. From 2012 to 2016, Gorman served as CEO of Science Gallery International, a nonprofit he founded with university partners to support the establishment of the Global Science Gallery Network in cities including London; Melbourne, Australia; and Bengaluru, India.  

From 1999 to 2000, Gorman held dual postdoctoral fellowships at MIT’s Dibner Institute and Harvard University’s Department of History of Science, before becoming a lecturer in science, technology, and society at Stanford University. He is the author of books on topics ranging from Buckminster Fuller´s designs to 17th century art and science to the recent book “Idea Colliders: The Future of Science Museums,” published by the MIT Press. He has curated numerous exhibitions and festivals bridging science, art, technology, and design around the world.

(*)From January 18 through 23, 1972, cellist Charlotte Moorman and artist Nam June Paik performed Concerto for TV Cello and Videotape and TV Bed at the Everson Museum of Art. For Concerto, Moorman played the video cello, an instrument designed by Paik and constructed out of television monitors, and for TV Bed she played a traditional cello while lying atop an installation of monitors resembling a bed. Paik was on hand to explain his Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer, the first machine designed to purposefully distort video feeds across multiple television screens. On performing with Paik and the risks involved in doing so, Moorman told the Syracuse New Times, “All of Paik’s pieces are dangerous. Performing the video cello at the Everson, you’d wonder why I don’t get electrocuted with all those thousands of wires.” Charlotte Moorman grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she began taking cello lessons at the age of ten. Moorman studied music at the Juilliard School in New York, during which time she met prominent musicians and artists, including Yoko Ono, with whom she later collaborated on a performance called Cut Piece. Ono inspired Moorman to experiment with her music and performance, and Moorman ultimately founded the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, a festival wholly dedicated to the avant-garde in New York, featuring hundreds of artists from around the world. Today she is remembered as a groundbreaking and accomplished musician and performance artist. Nam June Paik was born in Seoul, South Korea and studied at the University of Tokyo before receiving a degree in musicology at the University of Munich. Paik is widely considered to be a founder of video art and was an early leading figure in the medium. He showed work in exhibitions across Europe and Asia before travelling to the United States in the early 1960s, when he began working with video.

Moorman and Paik collaborated frequently throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Though often controversial, and sometimes criticized for vulgarity, their collaborations attracted a global audience. Several of their performances made headlines, most notably Opera Sextronique, in which Moorman played the cello while topless. The performance inadvertently violated an indecent exposure law, and sparked a legal case in New York regarding censorship in art [1]. Other collaborations included Sonata No. 1 For Adults Only, in which Moorman played cello while stripping down to a bikini, and a performance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where Moorman played one of Paik’s compositions and half-way through, jumped into a tank of water, finishing the piece soaking wet. Paik hoped their collaborations proved that sexuality not only belonged in fine art, film, and television, but also in music, saying “Music history needs its D.H. Lawrence, its Sigmund Freud.”

Joseph Churchward: 

Joseph Churchward is a Samoan-born New Zealand graphic designer and typographer He was born on 20 August 1933 in Apia, Western Samoa, the only child of Mary Coe and George Charles Churchward. Mary was of Tongan, Samoan and Scottish descent, the granddaughter of an American whaler.

Joseph Churchward was an internationally renowned typeface designer whose work graced record covers, billboards, newspapers and popular literature such as posters and brochures around the world, both during his lifetime and beyond.

Tobias Frere Jones: 

Tobias Frere-Jones established himself as one of the world’s leading typeface designers, creating some of the most widely used typefaces, including Interstate, Poynter Old-style, Whitney, Gotham, Surveyor, Tungsten and Retina.

He joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Art in 1996 and has lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His work is in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Verena Gerlach:

Verena Gerlach founded her studio for graphic design, type design, and typography in Berlin. Since 2006, she has worked as a freelance book designer for art book publishers, museums, and artists. She started lecturing in type design and typography in 2003, and she now gives lectures and workshops all over the globe. Besides designing corporate fonts for global companies, she also is working on the typographic production for international, contemporary artists.

Nadine Chahine: 

Dr. Nadine Chahine is an award winning Lebanese type designer. She has an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, and a PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands. Nadine’s research focus is on eye movement and legibility studies for the Arabic, Latin, and Chinese scripts.

he has numerous awards including two Awards for Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club in New York in 2008 and 2011. Her typefaces include: the best-selling Frutiger Arabic, Neue Helvetica Arabic, Univers Next Arabic, Palatino and Palatino Sans Arabic, and Koufiya.

Carol Twombly:

Carol Twombly, born in 1959 in Concord Massachusetts, started her artistic endeavors as a sculpture artist at Rhode Island School of Design. After seeing the practical appeal of the field of graphic design, she switched from sculpture to graphic design.

Carol worked for many years as a graphic designer. She took part in a digital typography program at Stanford University which allowed her to study for a Master of Science degree. From there she won the Morisawa gold prize for her Latin typographic design.

Veronica Burian:

Veronika Burian studied Industrial Design in Munich and worked in that capacity in Vienna and Milan over a few years. Discovering her true passion for type, she graduated in 2003 with distinction from the MA in Typeface Design course in Reading, UK.

Veronika Burian is a type designer and the co-founder of the independent type foundry TypeTogether with José Scaglione, publishing award-winning typefaces and collaborating on tailored typefaces for a variety of clients.

Jessica Hische:

Jessica Hische grew up in Pennsylvania. She currently lives in San Francisco, where she works as a letterer, illustrator, type designer, and relentless procrastiworker. she is a designer, illustrator and typographer living in San Francisco. She has worked with clients such as Wes Anderson, Dave Eggers, Penguin Books, The New York Times, Tiffany & Co., OXFAM America, McSweeney’s, American Express, Target, Victoria’s Secret, Chronicle Books, Nike, Samsung, and Wired Magazine.

Johnson Witehira:

Johnson Witehira is a leading indigenous designer, researcher and consultant. His design projects consider how customary Māori knowledge and ways of thinking can be applied in contemporary settings.

His creative works extend across designed communications, digital, interiors, urban design, product design and public artworks. As a co-creative director at Indigenous Design and Innovation Aotearoa (IDIA) he now applies his design expertise to work with businesses, community groups, and Government agencies to instigate design solutions that effect positive change in people, practice and place.

Week 1- Looking at Designers Pt 2

Joseph Churchward: Born in August 1932, in Samoa, he was a New Zealand graphic designer and typographer. At the age of 15, he received an Art Distinction Award in Lettering from Wellington Technical College and shortly after began working as a commercial artist. In 1969, he founded Churchward International Typefaces, which became New Zealand's largest typesetting firm. Berthold Fototypes (a leading German Type company) accepted some of his fonts for international distribution and were soon used throughout the world. His typefaces are now digitally distributed and stand up there with the world's favourite typefaces.

Veronika Burian: Born in 1973, in Prague, Czechia, she is a type designer and the co-founder of the independent type foundry, TypeTogether with José Scaglione. She studied Industrial Design in Munich and worked in that capacity in Vienna and Milan for a couple of years. Discovering her passion for type, she graduated in 2003 with a distinction from the MA in Typeface Design course in Reading, UK. She worked as a type designer at Dalton Maag in London for a few years, spent some time in Boulder, USA and then to her hometown in Prague, and now is currently living in Cataluña, Spain. She is also involved with Alphabettes.org, a showcase for work and research on lettering, typography and type design by women. She still continues to give lectures and workshops at international conferences and universities.

Jessica Hische: Born in 1984, in Charleston, South Carolina, United States, she is an American lettering artist, illustrator, author and type designer. She studied Graphic design and interactive design at Tyler School of Art, after graduating in 2006, she worked with design firms such as Headcase Design and Louise Fili. She began Daily Drop Cap, a project in which every day she created a new illustrative letter, working through the alphabet a total of twelve times. The popularity of Daily Drop Cap really kickstarted her career as a letterer and has inspired many other designers to start daily lettering projects. Her clients include Wes Anderson, The United States Postal Service, Tiffany & Co., The New York Times, Penguin Books, Target, Starbucks, American Express, and Wired Magazine.
