India Rejects Pakistan Army Chief’s Kashmir Statement, Reaffirms Its Sovereignty Over Jammu & Kashmir

India has strongly rejected Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir's recent remarks about Kashmir being Pakistan's "jugular vein." During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked, "How can anything foreign be part of a jugular vein? Kashmir is a Union Territory of India. Its only connection with Pakistan is the need for that country to vacate the illegally occupied territories."

This statement reaffirms India’s long-standing stance on the issue, rejecting any external claims over Jammu and Kashmir, which India firmly considers an integral part of its sovereign territory.

Pakistan Army Chief Defends Two-Nation Theory

General Munir, while addressing a Pakistani diaspora event, also defended the two-nation theory, which played a pivotal role in the 1947 Partition of India. He emphasized religious and cultural differences with India as the foundation of Pakistan's identity. He said, "Our ancestors believed that we are different from Hindus in every aspect of life... our religions, customs, traditions, thoughts, and ambitions are distinct."

He urged the overseas Pakistani community to embrace their "superior ideology" and pass it down to future generations.

Munir's defense of the two-nation theory underscores the ideological divide between India’s secular democracy and Pakistan's religious identity-based foundation. Japan Introduces New 060 Mobile Number Prefix Amid Shortage of 070 Numbers

Japan is facing a mobile phone number shortage and is set to launch a new prefix, 060, as early as December. This move by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications aims to address the dwindling supply of mobile numbers, particularly the 070 prefix, which has only 5.3 million numbers left.

Currently, mobile numbers in Japan utilize the 090, 080, and 070 prefixes. The introduction of the 060 prefix marks the first significant change in over a decade, as all usable 090 and 080 numbers have already been assigned. The country reported 212 million mobile phone subscriptions as of March 2024, a substantial increase from 140 million a decade ago.

Japan’s mobile numbering system began in 1999 with the 090 prefix, which quickly became exhausted due to the popularity of flip phones, leading to the introduction of the 080 prefix in 2002. The rollout of 070 numbers followed in 2013, driven by the rise of smartphones. Notably, Japan has maintained more than one cellular subscription per person since 2011, according to World Bank data.

The new 060 prefix could accommodate up to 90 million additional numbers. Early reactions from consumers suggest a positive reception, with younger users generally indifferent to the change. The Ministry has established a council to gather public opinions until early November, after which a final decision will be made.

If approved, the new 060 numbers could be available to consumers by mid-December.

This thorough investigation of Connecticut police officers’ misconduct found that officers typically receive light punishments, complaints of misconduct are often dismissed, and police departments are not transparent about their officers’ histories of misconduct. The investigation found that these problems exist in part because police disciplinary rules are written by the police, both through union contracts and internal rules of conduct.

To be held accountable for their misconduct, police officers need progressive discipline. As Howard says in the article, “You can’t keep giving a reprimand.” Police disciplinary records should be made public so that community groups and the public can review misconduct allegations, the findings, and the discipline imposed. The public needs to know the officer’s prior discipline as well to ensure the police internal investigation unit is working properly.

Police departments in Massachusetts share the same problems that this investigation identified in Connecticut. In both states there are instances of officers being fired for their misconduct, but then reinstated by an arbitrator. One example from Massachusetts is officer David Williams, who was twice fired by the Boston Police Department. The first time, he badly beat a fellow officer in plainclothes, thinking he was a civilian. The second time, he used a chokehold on our client and then lied about it. Both times, an arbitrator overturned the Boston Police Commissioner’s decision to fire Officer Williams. Arbitrators should have less authority to override disciplinary decisions and to determine what constitutes excessive force.

People I know pay NYC law enforcement and their civilian team to harass people they don’t like without any legitimate reason.

I was living my life minding my own business and all of a sudden I have NYC law enforcement running scams on me.

The FBI, NYPD Internal Affairs, and the CCRB aren’t helping.

I’m staying optimistic.
