Our new Modernism Beyond Metro-Land guidebook features many architects, working in a variety of styles and materials. Walter Segal’s work is unique among them for its focus on self building and use of timber. The borough of Lewisham was the first place to embrace his ideas, which have subsequently spread around the suburbs and beyond.
After a number of years designing small projects such as houses, flats and offices, largely in brick, Segal began to explore timber construction with a temporary annexe whilst his house in Highgate was being rebuilt, devising a self build system using widely available and low cost materials, in standard units. He saw how anybody could use the system to construct their own homes, and via the anarchist writer and architect Colin Ward, found a sympathetic reception at Lewisham Borough Council. They eventually allowed him some land to start building in Forest Hill, constructing 7 homes in what would be named Segal Close.
Other houses were built in Ormanton Road and Longton Avenue, Sydenham and Elstree Hill, Ravensbourne, all using the Segal method and producing houses built with timber frames and infill panels. Another plot of land was given over for self building in Honor Oak Park, where 13 two-storey timber houses were completed in 1986, and the street named Walter’s Way.
The borough’s own architects department also took inspiration from Segal's ideas, with the scheme at Brockley Park, next to Segal Close, designed by Geoffrey Wigfall, using mono pitched homes built in brick and finished with timber cladding and grass roofs. Some of the houses feature “pods” at the front, to be used for extra living or storage space, and the estate is grouped around a large green space.
Segal passed away in 1985 but his ideas persisted with self build projects appearing all around the capital's suburbs, with collaborator Jon Broome continuing the philosophy with his own practice Architype. Self-built projects can be found at Headway Gardens in Walthamstow, Parish Gardens in Greenwich, Eridge Green Close in Bromley and opposite Segal Close in Brockley Park, as well as at many other sites around the suburbs. Walter Segal’s self-build houses will have an extended section in our Modernism Beyond Metroland guidebook, now at 94% of its crowdfunding total. The Church of St James and St Paul in Marton, Cheshire is one of the oldest timber-framed churches in Europe.
The church was founded in 1343 by Sir John de Davenport and his son Vivian. Two damaged stone effigies can be found in the gloomy space below the tower, 14th century knights bearing the Davenport crest, thought to be the church’s founders.
The short, shingled belfry was added in 1540. I was losing the light by this point in the day, but the interior of the tower annexe is filled with large timber beams like the towers of St Mary’s in Mundon, Essex and St Mary the Virgin in Pembridge, Herefordshire.
Significant works were carried out in the 19th century. The roof was lowered in 1804 and restorations took place in 1850 and 1871.
The first restoration, carried out by J. M. Derick, changed the windows to let more light into the interior. The second restoration was by William Butterfield and focussed on the tower, adding the west entrance and tidying up the structural beams.
A third restoration took place in 1930, renewing some wall sections and the shingles of the tower, and extending the east wall of the chancel with modern brick. The rest of the structure is the original medieval building, close-studded oak beams with wattle and daub infill.
The 1930 restoration uncovered a medieval wall painting on the west wall of the nave. Divided into eight large panels by the timber frame, it is believed the partial fresco depicts the Last Judgement. Two paintings by 18th century artist Edward Penney can be found on the west wall, showing Aaron and Moses with the ten Commandments.

Konstancalieva kăšta, view of stair leading to summer room
Arbanasi, Bulgaria
The summer living room on the northeast corner of the dwelling gives an overlook to two parts of the courtyard. Wooden stairs provide access to the upper level. The projecting wood-framed element is constructed of studs, infill panels and coated with a white-washed plaster. The wooden roof structure is extended to shade the window openings. This roof structure is supported by brackets to carry the weight of the clay tiles. (photo 2000)

hey, i just found out about the forum, and while i admit i haven't checked it out myself yet, i have a couple questions that i'd love to ask.
how is the forum in terms of user privacy? are passwords stored in plaintext? (please tell me they aren't.)
related to that, how can we be sure the website won't be an easy victim to attacks? if the forum were victim of a cyber attack, would user accounts be compromised?
lastly, what do you think of implementing a rule similar to 4chan's "don't talk about 4chan"? if we want to keep the website hush-hush and less vulnerable to male infiltrators, it might be good to promote secrecy in some degree, maybe even encourage willful misnaming of the website (but i'd like to know what you think).
Hi. Please check out the cybersecurity page for tips on how to stay safe on the internet and especially when using the forum. If people are not comfortable with any chance of a database breach, I would recommend not making an account. While I would love people to join, I care about being honest and making sure people are aware and okay with the risks of participating.
how is the forum in terms of user privacy? are passwords stored in plaintext? (please tell me they aren't.)
Passwords are not stored in plaintext. However, I will say MyBB's (the forum software I'm using) password encryption algorithm is not the best, so if the database were breached, it would be relatively trivial for a hacker who knew what they were doing to decrypt user passwords. MyBB plans to use a better encryption algorithm in its next release, and switching to that once it is out will be a top priority for me. This is why I suggest using a unique password for this forum (and tbh on any website it is best to use a unique password, you never know where the next database breach will come from).
related to that, how can we be sure the website won't be an easy victim to attacks? if the forum were victim of a cyber attack, would user accounts be compromised?
All passwords for all administrative accounts/logins related to the forum, its database, its server, etc. are very long and randomly generated, and are completely different from each other. Password hacking would be extremely difficult, likely impossible.
The biggest way I could see user accounts becoming compromised would be through a database breach (getting access to the database). There are two ways I see this could happen:
Someone directly uses the server account credentials to log in and breach the database (highly likely impossible as they would need to know where the server is located and the password for the server).
Someone hacking into an administrator account on the forum and downloading the database. This would be the more likely route, but they would need to know the password of an administrator account. This is how Kodi, a MyBB forum with 400k users, got its database breached. However, there are multiple ways to avoid this. 1.) I found instructions on how to lock down the MyBB Admin CP (Control Panel) with an additional password, which would mean a hacker would need to not just hack into an admin's account, but also know the password to the Admin CP. 2.) There is another option of editing the forum source code so that the ability to download databases from the Admin CP is completely disabled. 3.) If any additional administrators are needed, I could give them adjusted permissions which would not allow them to create database backups. Overall though, I don't think I will need to add administrators any time soon, if ever. (Moderators are different than admins.)
In the worst case scenario of a database breach, what would be leaked is similar to the Kodi breach above. This is why on the Cybersecurity page, I say: use a unique password, don't use an important email, be wary of the private messaging system, etc.
lastly, what do you think of implementing a rule similar to 4chan's "don't talk about 4chan"? if we want to keep the website hush-hush and less vulnerable to male infiltrators, it might be good to promote secrecy in some degree, maybe even encourage willful misnaming of the website (but i'd like to know what you think).
Hmm, well I've already announced the forum on Tumblr, so it's not very hush-hush already. :') My view is that male infiltrators would try to get in regardless. I don't think I can stop people from talking/sharing the forum, and I would prefer feminist women be able to find it easier. I would like to hope the application process would weed out most bad actors.

SCP AMTF Nu-7 Cosplay - Assault Pack Maneuvers
Depicted here is the theoretical appearance of a conventionally armed AMTF Nu-7 operative during assault pack maneuvers. While most missions undertaken by Nu-7 revolve around direct action light fighter operations with constant logistical support from SCP Foundation elements, there are times where Nu-7 must operate alone without any form of logistical support. Examples include anomalous exploration missions or deep infiltration into enemy territory that require the unit to remain within the working area for extended periods of time without support. In such a case the standard light fighter loadout so commonly seen would not be sufficient in terms of individual sustainment. The longer the unit stays on the ground without support, the more sustainment equipment they will need to survive. This includes water, food, medical supplies, ammunition, spare batteries, and spare clothing as well as additional survival equipment like water filtration and purification, entrenching tools, toiletries, and shelter. Most missions that Nu-7 will perform that aren’t 24 hours or less will generally take place within two days and two nights. As such, this operative is equipped with a 48 hour assault pack, specifically the Eagle Industries SOF 50L Version 1 Assault Pack Prototype. An assault pack will provide the aforementioned sustainment equipment for a 48 hour mission comfortably within its interior. It can be worn over the operative’s fighting kit, however the zip-on pack panel and external belt must be removed and placed in and on the pack before it can be worn. This is because the pack utilizes a ruck style pack frame and hip belt to allow the wearer to fit the pack exactly to their liking. This allows for the operative to continue to wear their plate carrier and be able to fight while wearing their assault pack if the situation demands it.
In a 48 hour mission scenario, generally speaking once the element is dropped off at the infil location, they then move to a secondary location where they drop off their sustainment kit. This is where they will resupply and sleep in shelter if need be. Once the element drops off their assault pack, they reequip their zip-on pack panel and belt and continue with the mission. Once the objective is complete they can resupply at their assault pack drop off point and rest or move onto the secondary objective. In reality there are several methods of utilizing an assault pack during a mission, what such a loadout offers is the flexibility needed to survive within the working area for 48 hours.
During exploration missions, it may not be necessary to wear full kit when performing reconnaissance. The operative wears a boonie hat in experimental UCP-D camouflage. As his standard active hearing protection is mounted on his helmet, he wears 3M Combat Arms Ear Plugs in this scenario. He is equipped with an L3 M24 7×28 Binocular with an ARD, or Anti-Reflective Device, mounted at the front. This is otherwise known as a killflash and it prevents the sun from reflecting off the front lens and giving away the user’s position.
During 48 hour missions it may be necessary for the operative to collect water within the working area. To complete this task the Foundation supplies several water purification and filtration methods. The operative is shown currently using a Sawyer Squeeze connected to a Cnoc 3L VectoX Water Container to filter water into a CamelBak Eddy. He additionally has a Steripen Ultra UV Water Filter and Aqua Research H2Go Chlorine Disinfectant Generator beside him.

X-Men: The Hidden Years 22 (September 2001)
John Byrne & Tom Palmer
Two momentous things happened in September 2001, and they both involved towers in New York.
Tumblr media
That's right, it's the final issue of this series! And it's all about the Fantastic Fucking Four! I went into my complaints about this series last time and this final issue bears them all out, while also being a mess: it's pretty clear they got the cancellation news at a late stage and had to hurriedly rework parts of the comic accordingly. The Fantastic Fucking Four - who are presently a Fantastic Fucking Five, because they feature a guest Inhuman, to make me dislike them more - wrap up the whole "Magneto and Namor invade the surface world" in the first half of the book, while the X-Men are still underground trying to escape the Mole Man. Great storytelling!
Tumblr media
Apparently in an attempt to hurriedly address all the themes this series has failed to address, the rest of this issue is plot threads being tied up while everyone philosophises about being a mutant. These three panels are from three completely different scenes and conversations, but they suddenly realise they have to hammer all this home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know what you're really wondering, though - does Xavier fuck the mom? Does he? Well...no.
Tumblr media
This is bullshit! Justice for the mom! Justice - or at least casual sex - for Xavier! The only interesting plotline in the whole damn book fell through! What would have happened had the series not had to wrap up so hastily?! We'll never know!
Tumblr media
Anyway, that's the end, with demonstrably hastily drawn art, as if Byrne and Palmer resented having to ever actually draw all the same characters in the same room at the same time. Hank, the oldest if the five, arbitrarily turns 20, meaning they're no longer an all-teen team, which is used as a punctuation point to stop the series. I mean...fine, I guess.
Tumblr media
So, yeah, I didn't like this series. The storytelling was bad but actually the main problem was that the art was so, so dull. Often technically bad - look at Jean's face right there - but almost always just flat and unambitious, which only put more weight on the storytelling, which in turn couldn't take it. As I talked about at the start, Byrne is such a legend but I guess this just came along at a lowpoint both in his career and in the X-Men's popularity.
So that was X-Men: The Hidden Years. We come next to, guess what, more later infill with the original team in the shape of more First Class! Yes, First Class is somehow not done: it came back for a 4-issue mini series which I'l be reading next. I hope you're as excited as I am.

Ardler, Dundee, late 1980's; 6 17-storey blocks, compromising 1,788 flats, completed in 1966-7. The design was a variation of a standard design built elsewhere (in two or single sections, Ardler being the only triple section blocks) across Scotland by the contractor Crudens, using concrete frame with brick infill. The adjacent 4-storey panel blocks were completed just after. The 'multis' were demolished from 1998 onwards along with the 4-storey blocks; the last two disappeared in 2006-7.

even with new administration, there were a lot of things already approved and in the pipeline for this year.
End of 2025, we should have 10x the offshore wind as we did at end of 2024, due to one project that broke the bottleneck for building.
The bottleneck was lack of a specific type of ship operating within US. It's currently working off Virginia. The prep work for similar project off Connecticut is currently underway, and as soon as Virginia is done, that ship switches up here. And is likely fully booked through 2030 with similar items.
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Intiative has been operating for 15 years, reducing co2 power plant emissions in new England and midatlantic. They did such a good job they hit their 2020 goals in 2018... and set new more aggressive ones for 2030, at least some members shooting for zero power plant emissions by 2030.
Thats 10 members, plus Virginia just joined so just starting that process Pennsylvania and North Carolina may join with next year or two, once legal challenges solved.
RGGI used model of taxing CO2 emmission via permit and permit auction money goes to direct utility assistance for low income folks, weatherization & energy efficiency to reduce demand, and green power projects.
Those green projects are all small, but lots of em. So no one big solar farm, it's 20 warehouses with solar panels. So invisible infill you don't SEE happening. But that's been chugging along for 15+ years and will keep going because it's a state, not federal, program.
Justice40 under the Biden administration prioritized historically undeserved and economically depressed areas for funding for climate resiliancy projects and green projects. It's been in place since 2017 so a lot of money assigned to it that's still working through system and all those will complete in next few years.
Trump could reprioritize how money for those programs is allocated, but it is a lot of very rural areas so he will get push back. Noooo, we need that money! And they do.
Since they're very poor and undeserved areas, it means you get a much bigger improvement vs better off areas. Swapping out a coal plant from 1940 vs one that upgraded in 1990 is a way bigger potential improvement!
The US military has been putting lots in alternate energy for last few years entirely due to security of being reliant on oil they have to get places, leaves supply lines vulnerable. So they will continue adding capacity for foreseeable future. And anybody complaining about it being "woke nonsense" can get told off about how many fuel convoys get struck in conflicts and how much better on-site solar and wind is than generator use.
So there's good things in process that likely can't be stopped. So even if us fed stopped new project funding entirely (unlikely), there's lots in process that will complete in next few years and continue building capacity.
Keep on your reps about it at the federal level, because msny will still go through. But don't forget to annoy state reps as well because they CAN keep on those smaller state projects and keep building capacity. And other states already did a lot of the work. These are proven technologies. Copy other states homework.
We have already averted truly apocalyptic levels of global warming.
Yes, read that again. Let it sink in. This is what the science now says. We have already averted truly apocalyptic global warming.
To quote David Wallace-Wells, author of The Uninhabitable Earth, from his huge feature in the New York Times:
"Thanks to astonishing declines in the price of renewables, a truly global political mobilization, a clearer picture of the energy future and serious policy focus from world leaders, we have cut expected warming almost in half in just five years... The window of possible climate futures is narrowing, and as a result, we are getting a clearer sense of what’s to come: a new world, full of disruption but also billions of people, well past climate normal and yet mercifully short of true climate apocalypse." (New York Times, October 22, 2022. Unpaywalled here. Emphasis mine. And yes, this vision of the future is backed up by the current science on the issue, as he explains at length in the article.)
So we've already averted truly apocalyptic warming, and we've already cut expected warming IN HALF in just the past five years.
The pace of technology, of innovation, of prices, of feasibility, of discovery, of organizing, of grassroots movements, of movements in other countries around the world, have all picked up the pace so fast in the last five years.
Renewable technology and capacity are both increasing at an exponential rate. It's all S-curves, ones that look like this:
Tumblr media
-via The Economist, June 20, 2024.
How much more will we manage in another five years? Another ten? Another twenty?
I know the US is about to fucking suck about the environment for the next four years. But the momentum of renewable energy is far too much to stop - both in the US (x) and around the world.
(Huge shoutouts to India, China, and Brazil for massive gains for the environment in renewables, and Brazil for massive progress against Amazon deforestation.)
We're going to get there.
Say it with me. We're going to get there.

What Is Architectural decorative Mesh and Its Applications?
What Is Architectural Decorative Mesh?
Architectural decorative mesh, often referred to as architectural wire mesh, is a versatile and innovative material used in various architectural applications. It is typically made from high-tensile, grade 316 stainless steel and is produced using a weaving process similar to that of fabric production. The material consists of several individual wires woven on large looms, resulting in a flexible yet durable mesh that can be adapted for numerous design purposes.
The mesh is commonly produced from 80% recycled materials, making it an environmentally friendly option for architects seeking sustainable building solutions. Despite its initial appearance of rigidity, architectural mesh becomes quite flexible when tensioned over certain lengths, allowing it to be used creatively in both interior and exterior applications.
Applications of Architectural Decorative Mesh
Façades: Architectural mesh is frequently used as a façade material due to its sleek and modern appearance. It can transform the look of arenas, commercial buildings, conference centers, educational institutions, parking garages, stadiums, theaters, and more. The mesh façade can appear reflective or transparent depending on lighting conditions and viewing angles.

Free Forms: Due to its luxury appeal and versatility, architectural mesh is perfect for free-configuration projects such as aviaries or exhibitions where unique shapes are required.
Ceilings: Interior applications include using mesh for ceilings to combine aesthetics with functionality by concealing technical installations while offering protection.
Walls: Mesh panels serve as excellent choices for interior walls by accentuating room features or serving as focal points themselves.
Acoustic Applications: Architectural mesh aids in creating acoustically effective environments by scattering sound waves through its round wires which also support other acoustic materials.
Security Screens & Partitions: Its strength makes it suitable for security screens and partitions that require both durability and visual appeal.
Protective Grilles & Enclosures: Used as protective grilles or enclosures around sensitive areas or equipment due to its robust nature.
