Long-time readers of FYCI will recognize the name Hang Liu 劉涵, she’s been sideman / band member / touring musician and recording session player with countless TW artists. Search ‘Hang Liu 劉涵’ on the main page and you’ll get an idea of the variety of projects she’s done, in addition to her own band. Just in the last few weeks, we tagged her in posts about Waa Wei, Tizzy Bac, Anniedora, Crispy, PiA and Leaf Yeh.

She’s also a frequent participant in recordings/live shows that feature the 曜爆甘音樂工作室 Just Busy Music Studio strings ensemble. (We may not always tag her individually when the ensemble has many players)  The Just Busy fb has a lot of photos and clips representing the variety of work they do, some really cool gigs!  =D

That’s a heavenly choir of TW singers backing up ‘Maa Wei’ at TICC!   =D

The song is If (music/lyrics by Jackie Yu) from Waa’s 在哪裡 Where ep (2011). 

We previewed this gathering of singers a few weeks ago. Left to right, that’s Hang Liu 劉涵 (Infancy 隱分子樂團), DingBuLaDing 丁律妏 (Crispy 脆樂團), Paige Su 蘇珮卿, and Marvelous Mandark Ravel 梁丹郡 (I Mean Us, 甜約翰 Sweet John).

Listen closely to how they divide up the vocal arrangement.  And bravo to 丁律妏 for those stratospheric harmonies!  =D

The stage setting was arranged to keep Waa off of her feet as much as possible, not a lot of dancing/jumping as she is 7 months pregnant.

I would love to see VH release an ep of English versions of some of their songs and commence world domination!  That’s a common thing in J-pop and even K-pop, but you rarely see a TW band to do it.  Elephant Gym had a Japanese singer do an English-lyrics version of a song on the ‘international collaboration’ version of their new album. (Guitarist Tell Chang sings the Mandarin version on the domestic release).  And there are some indies that have done new Japanese versions of their songs.  (PiA and Cheshire Cat come to mind)

Yes, I know many TW/HK/China/Singapore/Malaysian bands have English songs, but I’m talking about C-indie bands taking great songs and presenting them to a new audience.  Anyway... =)

First glimpse from the new Paige Su 蘇珮卿 album, and it’s gorgeous!  =D

Before I listened just now, I was scanning the credits for familiar names, and I wondered why Paige’s drummer/husband Cody Byassee (白克迪) wasn’t listed?  Surprise – both the drums & bass are electronic on this track, I’m guessing the work of arranger Chuck Su.
