For Lula to be a climate leader, he must phase out oil
At COP28, the Brazilian president has sent mixed messages by aligning with OPEC. If he really wants to tackle the growing threat of droughts and floods, he must set a clear fossil-free, pro-nature direction for the UN climate summit he will host in Belém in 2025

The biggest-ever UN climate summit is well underway in Dubai with eighty thousand participants discussing hundreds of agenda items to avert the climate crisis, but ultimately there is only one goal that matters: reducing carbon emissions as quickly as possible by phasing out fossil fuels and eradicating deforestation.
By comparison, everything else is hot air. Delegates can talk all they want about green technology, net zero pledges, compensation payments, scientific studies and other well-intentioned initiatives, but none of that will be effective unless the world halts the build up of carbon dioxide and other planet-heating gases in the atmosphere. That existential challenge, upon which all life on Earth depends, can only be achieved by phasing out coal, oil and gas and restoring the health of the world’s climate infrastructure: the forests, oceans, wetlands and other centres of natural vitality.
If anyone was still in any doubt about the urgency of the climate crisis, this horrendously destructive year has surely made them realise we cannot wait a second longer: 2023 is already confirmed as the hottest year on record. July was the warmest month in more than 120,000 years. This has brought devastating drought to the Amazon, floods to southern Brazil, heatwaves to the Andean mountains, fires to Canada and death and destruction across many parts of the planet. This is just the start. If emissions from fossil fuels and forests continue to increase, then temperatures will continue to rise for decades. We will look back on 2023 as one of the coolest years of our lives. Soon, it won’t just be dolphins and fish that suffer mass mortalities, it will be people. “We are terrified,” a group of 1,447 scientists said in an open letter released at Cop28. “If we are to create a liveable future, climate action must move from being something that others do to something that we all do.”
The first week of Cop28 shows the desperate need for a new perspective. The process has been captured by the very people who profit most from increasing carbon emissions. The president of this climate conference is Sultan Al Jaber, who is the CEO of the biggest oil and gas company in the United Arab Emirates. As many climate campaigners have joked, this is like putting a fox in charge of a henhouse or asking Dracula to run a bloodbank. But it is not funny when the man in charge of addressing the most difficult and important challenge in human history goes on record to deny that eradicating fossil fuels is the only way to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius or that a life without oil would send humanity back into caves. These comments, which have been thoroughly rebutted by scientists, reveal the true face of the fossil fuel industry, which has been holding up progress for more than three decades.
All of which makes Brazil’s decision to align itself more closely with the world’s biggest oil cartel Opec, more disappointing. Announced at the start of the climate summit, the timing of this move could not have been more of a kick in the teeth to international efforts to tackle global heating. It is brutally pragmatic. Brazil aims to expand oil production in defiance of advice from the International Energy Agency that 1.5C is impossible if countries open new fields. The day after Cop28 finishes, Brazil will hold an auction of dozens of new oil development blocs. All of these steps will mean more drought, more suffering, more death in the years to come.

Russia reduces Su-75 'Checkmate' costs to win the sale of the fighter in India
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/07/2024 - 21:05in Military
Russia's effort to improve the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-75 'Checkmate' single-engine combat aircraft program is facing some obstacles. The project cannot move forward with state funding alone. Last year, potential partnership discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were started. Now, the opportunity to become a partner of India has come to the table.
ROSTEC reported substantial cost reductions in the Su-75 project, attributing them to certain "technical changes". These changes were influenced by the "feedback from a potential buyer" that led to decreased costs. Without any official confirmation, some sources suggest that India could be this potential buyer, as the Hindustan Times said.
youtube
Retired Indian Marshal Anil Khosla, in a recent interaction with the media, raised some significant points. He mentions caution, requiring that a detailed cost-benefit analysis be made by New Delhi before making any commitments. He also adds that it is essential for India to strategically assess whether a mutual pact can extract more benefits for India. Any decision must produce favorable results for both parties involved.
Interestingly, India is currently working on its own advanced jet fighter. The ambitious fifth generation combat aircraft (FGFA) project is already underway and New Delhi is heavily invested in its success. From the perspective of Indian defense and industry, can a potential alliance with Russia, a complex geopolitical partner, compromise India's local project?

Unmanned version of the Su-75.
However, this did not dissuade Russia. They are committed to seeking help for the Su-75 Checkmate project. Although India remains on the list of potential partners, Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade, says that Moscow is also keeping an eye on other foreign customers. The update of the aircraft's layout, control and weapon systems based on customer feedback has led to certain modifications.
It is worth remembering that ROSTEC recently presented the Su-75 at the World Defense Show 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as a way to attract the interest of potential partners or customers in the region. Russia has continuously expressed the importance of the Middle East in the development and trade of its armaments.

Sukhoi (United Aviation Corporation, UAC) is currently working on the first functional prototype of the Su-75 Checkmate. The plan is to be ready later this year, with tests scheduled from next year. They plan to offer the Su-75 Checkmate in three variants: a single-seat, two-seater and unmanned aircraft. All versions were patented in July 2023.
According to the UAC, improvements are being made to a new anti-radar coating paint scheme that aims to increase the aircraft's stealth performance. They made an announcement earlier this year, revealing that they had obtained a patent for the scheme. The vision, according to Russian UAC engineers, is to camouflage the aircraft so well that not only does it become difficult for radars to detect it, but also for the human eye, under cloudy weather conditions, has difficulty detecting it.
youtube
Sukhoi Aircraft Company, part of United Aircraft Corporation at ROSTEC, revealed the Light Tactical Fighter Checkmate at the international air show MAKS-2021, held in Zhukovsky, near Moscow. The foreign launch of this new model took place at the Dubai Airshow 2021, in the United Arab Emirates. Essentially a derivative of the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter, the new warplane is developed in an innovative way by the state-owned technology giant, Rostec.

so whats the deal with overkills the walking dead?
I'm glad you asked! (approx. 2,300 words)
So our story starts during Payday 2's first anniversary, the Fall of 2014. Players had to attain certain community goals to get new things to play with during their first annual Crimefest event, and the last two prizes were secret. They wound up being John Wick as a playable character, and the trailer for a new game Overkill was working on, based in the world of The Walking Dead comics. The premise was simple: it was set in the same part of the world as Payday 2, Washington DC, and would involve players trying to keep themselves and their camp alive during the zombie apocalypse made popular in Robert Kirkman's graphic novels and the AMC TV show. Given the fact that Payday 2 had proven to be a tremendous cultural hit around this time, getting the likes of Giancarlo Esposito and making cameos in the Wick movies at the height of their popularity, and given how at the moment it is very possible to argue that Payday 2 might have sold more copies than Super Mario Brothers 3, it would seem that OTWD was in good hands.
The problem, though, was their CEO. Bo Andersson used pressure he conjured up in Varvtre AB, a holdings company he was on the board of directors for, to become the CEO of Starbreeze when they acquired Overkill Software, the makers of Payday: The Heist and Payday 2. This also moved Bo from a role within the games industry alongside his brother to being his brother's superior and putting him in a firmly business role. This was good for Bo, because it would allow him to scrape capital from Overkill on their pursuit into superstardom to fund his own dream project: Storm.
Storm was a concept that Bo had been working on since 2008, the idea of bringing virtual reality back from being a curious novelty we played with in the 1990s into a mainstream competitive eSport. Players would wear tactical vests with computers built into them and a 5K resolution HMD that Acer would develop with the aid of Starbreeze in a massive bespoke arena, and using a combination of LIDAR scanning, realtime texture mapping, and the Valhalla game engine Starbreeze paid $8 million for, their physical arena would turn into a sci-fi deathmatch where players would cooperate to eliminate the enemy team and seek victory.
Bo Andersson was paying tens of millions of dollars to invent Laser Tag.
But how does this tie into The Walking Dead? Well, as a proof of concept, the work that Overkill had done in their in-house game engine, Diesel 2.0, would be ported into Valhalla to bring Overkill's The Walking Dead to life. Overkill's employees had long complained that Diesel could not compete visually, and even incorporating proper normal maps and bumping up the texture quality could not shake the appearance of a Source Engine or early Unreal 3 title. Despite releasing in 2013 and with the game now moving into 2016, onto the 8th generation of consoles, Payday 2 was not a looker and Overkill's The Walking Dead faced the same fate.
The problem, though, is that Bo Andersson bought the Valhalla Engine, which was being designed for VR first and foremost, much too early. The engine was literally incomplete, and the programmers had to write tools for the engine before they could write any code for the game itself. After nearly a year of work, they did bring Valhalla into a usable state, and used its VR prowess to power Payday 2's VR version. Bo also proposed a VR demo of Overkill's The Walking Dead to be hosted in Dubai, at VR Park (now titled PlayDXB), to demonstrate the game, the headset, and the VR technology to Middle Eastern investors who could free Bo from the shackles of Scandinavian game development and make him the worldwide name in VR. This delayed their actual non-VR Walking Dead game, which had serious funding from Skybound Entertainment and Robert Kirkman, past its intended 2016 street date. The game was nowhere near finished as Overkill staff were pulled back and forth to so many different projects within the studio. They received an extension to their deadline, Fall 2017, and work continued on the Valhalla Engine and the VR demo.
Fast forward another year. Starbreeze puts out Raid: World War II, a Diesel 2.0 title in which four players steal from the Nazis in almost exactly same manner as in Payday 2, starring John Cleese as the handler for the crew, and some trailers commissioned for their Walking Dead game using virtually zero actual in-game assets, and Skybound makes them an ultimatum: if the game is not out by November 2018, then they lose the rights to the license. They have wasted the rights holder's time and money for too long, and the project is dragging its heels with a CEO seeing it as a low priority to get their contractually-obligated co-op FPS for PCs and consoles out versus his ambitions of filling an entire space in Dubai with his name, his brand. Overkill developers, who had been clamoring for years to use an actual engine that makes sense for FPSes, finally get their wish, and Bo Andersson invests in commercial licenses for Unreal Engine 4. The problem now, though, is that the staff have a year to make the game in Unreal, with the caveat that they have zero experience in the engine. If they had made this move two years ago, they'd have the time to commit to learning the ins and outs, but they don't.
Overkill goes into crunch, with staff sleeping in the offices and working 100-hour weeks to learn Unreal and take what the documentation and tutorials offer them and implement it into their Walking Dead title, reverse-engineering the concepts they had implemented into the Diesel and Valhalla versions of the game and dropping them into Unreal. Bo Andersson, all the while, is going on vacations and not coming in on the regular, spending his time playing zombie games for inspiration and coming to the staff with his own ideas for the game based on them. Glory Kills, Special Infected, robust base maintenance mechanics and the ability to command teams of non-player survivors on missions all wound up in the game with little actual regard for how these pieces fit together. By the time that he realized he should be more actively hands-on, he only had a scant few months to spend with the staff at the final mad dash to make a playable product. The game was playable at E3, with two demo levels, and one of them playtested so poorly that the staff had to pull it from the rotation, but when Bo heard this feedback he would not tell his staff. He told them the game was testing great at E3, that people loved it.
Overkill's The Walking Dead released on the 7th of November, 2018, a week after Payday 2 ended support by letting players kill fallen angels and solve a giant puzzle wheel about the in-game lore in order to turn Bain, the player's main contact, into the US President via a body-swapping artifact used by the ancient kings of Kataru, who were gifted immortality at the same time common man was gifted the knowledge of good and evil at the Garden of Eden. While the clown-themed robbery game ended on a confusing note, Overkill's The Walking Dead was getting started to a whole heap of roughness. The game's combat was frustrating, with hordes of walkers that had to be put down one clumsy charged melee swing at a time and human enemies who fired off AKMs and MP5s with reckless abandon. Their noise would draw hordes, which would need to be contended with via your own noise, as dealing with a few dozen enemies with melee combat was awkward and difficult.
Being grappled by a zombie cost a health bar and a half in a game where your starting character had on average four healthbars to their name, and the underlying gameplay, despite being completely linear missions in level and objective design, were just Payday heists at the end of the day. Hell or High Water involved you raiding a camp owned by The Family, an antagonistic gang your camp is at war with, and stealing their supplies. In turn, they arrive at your camp and you kill five waves of them in Worse Than Walkers, in a move no different than Payday 2's Safe House Raid mission, with no zombies in sight. The camp-building mechanics, which were tied to player level and their ability to tend to the needs of their workers, were a confusing mess of UI elements that did not mesh together, and all weapons were earned in a gachapon-style case system and would degrade over time, requiring the player unjam them, fix them with the supplies they need to keep camp morale up, or watch them fall into disrepair. There was also no tutorial mission, with the game opening with The First Shot, the E3 demo mission that tested so poorly they stopped running it.
Overkill's The Walking Dead performed poorly, both critically and commercially, and Starbreeze went right into damage control. The game's high price tag to low gameplay ratio was combatted with a $30 version that required paying for the missions $60 players got for free. Season 2 went into production very quickly, with fixes to the base game, new weapons, and new survivors being promised within the coming months. Unfortunately, this was too little, too late, as Skybound issued a cease and desist to their business partner after just three months of sale, and by February 2019, Overkill's The Walking Dead was just as much a corpse as the undead shamblers present in the video games.
Perhaps what sealed the fate of the game wasn't its overall quality, as The Walking Dead is home to a large number of subpar games, but its tone and gameplay. Overkill's The Walking Dead is a very staunchly libertarian take on the franchise, pitting the player with the idea that they are to be a colonizing force, destroying an antagonistic camp and treating the other people just trying to survive as cannon fodder not unlike if they were just walkers with guns. This is no surprise given another face at Overkill, executive producer Almir Listo, having a robust fascination with libertarianism and the cult of personality that surrounded fringe Right-wing groups. Almir himself is not a conservative, but he has proven time and time again that he thinks the way Donald Trump talks is funny and has an interest in American conservative viewpoints and conspiracies as an outsider looking in, likely not helped by an unnamed comics writer taking over Payday 2 in its final year to turn the game about robbing banks into one with an ancient conspiracy and Nephilim to mow down with your MG42 or M16.
The Walking Dead is a story about its people and how they're shaped by the conflict, by the apocalypse that surrounds them, and while Kirkman expressed early interest in the sound-based horde gameplay encouraging quiet takedowns and swift, accurate gunplay, it is very possible that the idea of not just a bad Walking Dead game, but a bad Walking Dead game from a popular studio that fundamentally misunderstands the world of The Walking Dead and needs to fall back on generic bandits and raiders to fill its spaces a la Bethesda's open world titles was a bad look. We'll never know for certain, though, as the game has been pulled from sale for ages.
But this brings us to sometime last week. September 21st marked the launch of Starbreeze Studios' (formerly Overkill Software's) Payday 3. The game features a lot of the stuff they had worked on for The Walking Dead (weapon models, a rework to the Shield enemy, armor working exactly like health in OTWD) but also a ton of its own ideas, and in general the gameplay is very solid. The issue, though, is the progression and a number of bugs that hamper the experience, alongside requiring a Starbreeze Nebula account and online connection to play, with no offline mode to speak of, which caused problems when the servers for the game were down for its first three days after launch. Starbreeze promised a patch was coming shortly thereafter, but on October 21st, a month after the game released, someone with ties to Starbreeze, fed up with the Starbreeze Nebula account requirement and persistent Internet connection to play a game with obvious issues and no Patch 1 release date in sight, released the final build of Overkill's The Walking Dead. This featured a proper tutorial, made the original The First Shot into an optional random encounter a player could take on for additional resources, a slew of new weapons, a wandering trader who could sell you blueprints to the DLC's guns, and the rest of Season 2's missions. The leaked build is not playable online but is DRM-free, running just fine completely offline and preserving the game for future generations to point and laugh at, albeit without any help to ease the difficulty for a game that expected four human players at a time.
Perhaps the weirdest part of the leak is that it brought out a handful of fans from the woodwork who view Overkill's The Walking Dead as an underrated gem buried before it could truly shine, individuals who feel the game could be one of the studio's best with enough polish, and as a result Robert Kirkman has been once again inundated with people asking about the now five year-old game, hoping to give it another chance. I, personally, feel that the clumsy pacing, questionable storyline bearing little similarities to the graphic novels it's based on, and the over-reliance on generic bandits voiced by Payday regulars Josh Lenn and Joseph Balderrama prevent the game from being anything but a really weird footnote in a company's confusing, convoluted history.

Karina Gonçalves David, a small-scale farmer representative from Brazil, is concerned by the presence of powerful and polluting firms. “If they are inside, they have an advantage. This place is about solutions to face the climate crisis but the companies are appropriating it to do lobbying. They are going the opposite way.”
The world’s top five meat companies’ emissions are estimated to be significantly larger than those of the oil firms Shell and BP, while the dairy industry’s 3.4% contribution to global human-induced emissions is a higher share than aviation.
Outspoken meat lobby groups are also on the ground in Dubai, including the North American Meat Institute, which as recently as 2022 claimed the extent of human-made climate breakdown was “unknown”.
Producers of pesticides have also turned out in high numbers this year, up 30% compared with 2022.
Together, Bayer, Syngenta, BASF and their trade association, CropLife, which has pushed back against attempts to enact new climate measures, sent 29 delegates.
Raj Patel, of the sustainability thinktank IPES-Food, said: “Just as with the influx of oil lobbyists, industrial agriculture businesses are scared. They have read the science and they know how much their business has driven the climate crisis.”
Big food and farming representatives are keen to steer conversations away from dietary change, which is under discussion at the summit. On Sunday, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation will release the first draft of its plan for achieving a sustainable global food system, which is expected to call on rich nations to cut meat consumption.
This follows the recommendation of the Eat-Lancet Commission, which suggests people consume no more than 15.7 kg a year. In 2020, the average American consumed 126kg of meat.
Smallholder farmers are worried they will be sidelined by the power of the agribusiness lobby. A recent report showed small-scale producers get just 0.3% of international public climate finance despite producing a third of the world’s food.
Most corporations, lobby groups and NGOs that attend the Cop climate summits have “observer” status, but the analysis shows an increase in the number of industry representatives attending Cop28 with their national governments, making companies and lobby groups party to diplomatic negotiations.
Participating as country delegates, says Nusa Urbancic from the Changing Markets Foundation, means that industry may be perceived more as peers by policymakers who then give greater credibility to their positions.
The highest numbers of agribusiness representatives were brought in by Brazil, with 36 delegates linked mostly to the meat industry. Next in line was Russia, which handed out 15 passes to people affiliated with fertiliser companies and lobby groups, followed by Canada, which offered tickets to eight more delegates from fertiliser firms.
Fabrício Muriana, from Brazil’s Instituto Regenera, who is attending as an observer with the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, said: “They are here because they knew it would be a food Cop. It’s a cynical move because these people are not even beginning to scratch the surface of reducing harm, let alone addressing climate. We need stricter criteria on who is coming, and with what intentions.”
Big food companies have announced a handful of voluntary initiatives at Cop28. One is the UAE- and US-led Aim for Climate partnership, which has been criticised for skewing heavily towards techno-fixes and the commercial interests of large corporations.
The new analysis gives only a snapshot of the industrial agriculture sector’s influence. Agriculture and trade ministers, which fell outside the scope of the analysis, have been fierce advocates for the interests of agribusiness at UN events in recent years.
Government officials from Brazil and Argentina – both big producers of beef – pushed to water down scientific recommendations about reducing meat-eating in the latest IPCC report.
The US agriculture secretary, Tom Vilsack, a former dairy lobbyist, told industry groups before Cop28 that the US would use the summit to advocate for its market-based approach to agricultural policy, which shuns calls for regulation of industries such as meat and dairy.

The United States will work with other governments to speed up efforts to make nuclear fusion a new source of carbon-free energy, U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry said Tuesday, the latest of many U.S. announcements the last week aimed at combatting climate change.
Nuclear fusion melds two hydrogen atoms together to produce a helium atom and a lot of energy—which could be used to power cars, heat and cool homes and other things that currently are often powered by fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. That makes fusion a potentially major solution to climate change, which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Still, fusion is a long way off, while other clean technologies like wind, solar and others are currently in use and could be increased.
“We are edging ever-closer to a fusion-powered reality. And at the same time, yes, significant scientific and engineering challenges exist,” Kerry said, in Dubai for U.N. climate talks. “Careful thought and thoughtful policy is going to be critical to navigate this.”
Researchers have been trying for decades to harness the reaction that powers the sun and other stars — an elusive goal because it requires such high temperatures and pressures that it easily fizzles out.
Kerry wants to speed that up in hopes of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times, a benchmark set by the international community. He urged nations to come together to “harness the power of fundamental physics and human ingenuity in response to a crisis.” The strategy lays out five areas for international partnerships: research, the supply chain and future marketplace, regulation, workforce issues and public engagement. Kerry spoke at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum.
The United States and United Kingdom announced a partnership in November to accelerate global fusion energy development, and the United States announced its own vision last year for research needed over the decade. In southern France, 35 nations are collaborating on an experimental machine to harness fusion energy, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale, carbon-free source of energy. That project has been plagued by delays and cost overruns. On Friday, Japan and Europe said they were launching the world's largest fusion reactor.
Both China and Russia are partners in ITER, and China in particular is moving aggressively to promote fusion research and development, said Andrew Holland, chief executive officer of the Fusion Industry Association.
"We're trying to build a global posse to get there before the Chinese so the Chinese don't dominate another new technology," he said.
Before he left for Dubai, Kerry put on a hardhat and toured Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Devens, Massachusetts, a company racing to design, build and deploy fusion power plants.
Until now, all nuclear power has come from nuclear fission reactors in which atoms are split — a process that produces both energy and radioactive waste. The global nuclear industry launched an initiative at COP28 for nations to pledge to triple this kind of nuclear energy by 2050. More than 20 have already signed on, including the United States and the host of this year's talks, the United Arab Emirates.
Fusion doesn’t produce the radioactive waste of nuclear fission. In a global race to make it a practical and possibly limitless power source, more than $6 billion has been invested to date, according to the Fusion Industry Association. There are more than 40 fusion companies globally now with over 80% of the investment in the United States. Thirteen of the companies emerged in just the past year and a half.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems has raised the most, more than $2 billion, according to the association.
Like the 35-nation effort, Commonwealth is trying to create fusion inside what's called a tokamak. The doughnut-shaped machine uses powerful magnets to confine and insulate a plasma so it's hot enough for the fusion reaction to occur and stays hot longer.
A year ago, in a major breakthrough that used a different technology at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, scientists for the first time were able to engineer a reaction that produced more power than was used to ignite it, called net energy gain. Their process uses lasers.
Physicists around the world view the doughnut-shaped machines as the most promising kind of magnetic fusion device.
Tokamaks have been getting bigger in size for better performance. Commonwealth Fusion was founded in 2018 by researchers and students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Using breakthroughs in superconducting magnet technology combined with science from their own compact tokamak, the MIT group set out to build a magnet tolerant of high temperatures that could achieve really strong magnetic fields, using little electricity.
Their hope is to build a smaller, less expensive unit more rapidly, to make fusion commercially viable for the first time, said Professor Dennis Whyte, a co-founder of Commonwealth who leads the Plasma Science and Fusion Center.
“If fusion becomes economically competitive, we've solved energy for humanity forever, forever. It's like, of course you go after that," he said in an interview. “The compulsion that’s coming both from climate change and from energy security means it sure seems this is the right time to make the big push to get there.”
The company and the university collaborate closely. In 2021, they turned on their superconducting electromagnet and demonstrated a record-breaking magnetic field, making it the strongest fusion magnet of its kind. Whyte said he knew then fusion had changed forever.
But despite the hype, reliable and cheap nuclear fusion energy is still a pipe dream, said Edwin Lyman, director of nuclear power safety for the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington. Fusion is far less likely than other alternatives to be commercialized on a timeframe that would allow it to help prevent the worst effects of climate change, he said. Lyman said the enormous price tag could also rob more promising alternatives, such as renewable energy, of resources they need to thrive,
Yet 19 fusion companies think they will deliver power to the grid before 2035, the Fusion Industry Association said in July.
Commonwealth is designing its first power plant, which it's calling “ARC,” to connect to the grid in the early 2030s.
ARC is intended to make roughly 460 megawatts of electricity. About 60 of those would be used to run the plant, for a net output of about 400 megawatts, enough to power tens of thousands of homes. It's projected to cost roughly $1 billion to $2 billion, according to the company, and fit on a space the size of a basketball court.
Before that, Commonwealth says it will build and test a prototype tokamak it calls SPARC, hoping to turn that on in late 2025 or early 2026.
CEO Bob Mumgaard said he thinks clean energy from fusion can decarbonize heavy industries that are big emitters of greenhouse gases.
“That’s our future play, it’s the really hard stuff, the stuff that gets you to zero," he said in an interview.
Along the walls at Commonwealth runs a pattern of white dots at hip level, one for each of the 10,000 fusion power plants they think the world will need by 2050. Mumgaard said it's a daily reminder the world uses a lot of energy, most of it from fossil fuels, and that has to change.

Top 4 Ways To Save Time and Money Through Proper Packaging at Logistics Services In Dubai

It is more crucial than ever to reduce company expenses since prices are rising as a result of inflation, supply chain issues, and labor shortages. By using the right packing strategies, suppliers and retailers withlogistics services in Dubai may guarantee increased cost and time efficiency. Here are four quick ways that altering how you package your shipments might help you save time and money.
MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE, PROTECT CONTENTS
When planning your supply chain, packaging is sometimes disregarded. But it plays a crucial role in maintaining both customer happiness and a sustainable profit margin. Your chances of receiving a damaged or delayed cargo, which is expensive for you and invariably results in lower customer satisfaction, are reduced if you package your shipments correctly and quickly.
There are a few strategies to make sure your packages are correctly wrapped, including:
Not leaving any voids in your packaging. Empty space is an ineffective use of space and can allow items to move during travel, harming them.
Always position the object in the box's center, leaving about 6 cm between it and the side walls.
Shipping many items inside of a bigger product using separators for increased efficiency.
Use a strong seal to shield the package from weather (moisture) damage. Additionally, this will assist guard against the loss of items in transit.
Invest in good shrink wrap, and fasten items with care.
DECREASE THE WEIGHT
During the logistics services in Dubai weight and breakage frequently go hand in one. The number of pallets required per truck may be calculated with the aid of the appropriate weight for the various shipments. Some strategies for lightening your shipments and improving their effectiveness include:
Obtaining precise measurements through the use of vendor boxes, packaging that is standard size, or choose and pack in boxes for different sizes. By selecting the proper sizes, you may comply with regulations and avoid any carrier fines.
Using lightweight or weight-efficient packing to reduce shipping expenses.
Using well-designed packaging can make moving your packing easier and preserve your inventory more effectively (for example, when packaging is piled on top of one another during transit).
SIMPLIFY PACKAGING
Businesses frequently utilize the same size package types for a variety of shipments to streamline the process during logistics services in Dubai. Although this appears to be a terrific approach to streamline and improve your shipping process, you could be missing out on longer-term cost reductions that are more significant.
Dimensional weight pricing is one strategy for lowering weight and dunnage. This pricing strategy refers to setting a package's price based on volume as opposed to size. This might assist you in selecting the appropriate-sized box for your product and lowering your shipping expenses as a whole.
PROPERLY LABEL YOUR SHIPMENTS
This is a crucial step in the procedure to lower claims, lower the number of missing shipments, and much more. Correct labeling guarantees that the contents, destination, etc., are accurately documented. You may appropriately label your shipments in the manner listed below:
Using high-quality label materials produced on industrial/commercial printers, clearly identify the sender and recipient addresses on the contents of the box.
Place the label where it belongs on your packaging. Never place the label for an LTL shipment on top of a pallet; always place it on the sides.
For tracking and visibility purposes, make sure the tracking number is distinct and apparent.
Utilizing a third-party logistics provider (3PL) like Focal Shipping might help you improve the efficiency of your shipping process given the number of variables to take into account. Call or stop by Focal Shipping to find out how we can assist you in choosing the best packaging options for your shipments so that you may improve revenue, satisfy customers, and save time.

Reducing impact is not enough, businesses need to move toward regeneration

This Monday, the Brazil Climate Summit Europe, a spin-off of the conference held in New York since 2022, will take place in Paris. The event will focus on telling the stories of different industries and companies that have built sustainable and thriving businesses in Brazil while following the best ESG practices available.
Natura&Co, the beauty and cosmetics group that recently committed to a much more proactive approach to its ESG journey, will be an important part of the conversation. In an interview with The Brazilian Report, a media partner of Brazil Climate Summit Europe (BCS Europe), Angela Pinhati, the sustainability director for Natura&Co Latin America, gave us a sneak preview of some of the insights she will share with the audience.
The timing could not be better, as the group has begun transitioning from sustainability to regeneration as the soul of its business — or, as the World Economic Forum put it, “from reactive resilience to more proactive regeneration.” The official communication came out in December during COP28 in Dubai, but the transformation had been in the making for some time. Months before the announcement, the group updated its sustainability plan, raising the bar of its decarbonization, deforestation, and diversity targets.
“We are currently in transition. Sustaining the world the way it is is not enough. But more important than having this sense of non-conformity, of helping people in times of crisis, as is happening now in Rio Grande do Sul or the drought that hit the Amazon region last year, companies must embrace their decarbonization goals,” says Ms. Pinhati, adding that both public and private organizations need to move towards regeneration. “The urgency to act has never been so present,” she says, referring to the increasing frequency of extreme climate events.

5 Steps for Mainland Business Setup in Dubai, UAE

If you're thinking about setting up a mainland business in Dubai, UAE, there are a few things you should know to ensure a smooth and successful process. Here are five steps you can follow to set up a mainland business in Dubai:
Step 1: Determine the Business Activity
The first step in setting up a mainland business in Dubai is to determine the business activity you want to undertake. You need to select a business activity from the Dubai Department of Economic Development’s (DED) list of permitted activities.
Make sure that your chosen activity is aligned with your interests and skills. This will also ease up the process of obtaining a Dubai commercial license as business activities dictate your license allowance.
Step 2: Choose a Legal Structure
Once you have determined the business activity, you need to choose a legal structure for your business. The most common legal structures for mainland businesses in Dubai are Limited Liability Company (LLC), Sole Proprietorship, and Civil Company.
Each structure has its own set of requirements and benefits, so it's important to consult with a legal expert to determine the best option for your business. A mainland or a freezone company formation in Dubai is suitable for companies looking to expand in a shorter time frame. This entails the decision-makers choosing a legal structure that suits the business in the mainland, and/or freezone.
Step 3: Reserve a Trade Name
The next step is to reserve a trade name for your business. The name must be unique and comply with the DED's naming conventions. You can reserve the name online through the DED website or in person at the DED service centers. A mainland business set up in Abu Dhabi or Dubai requires attention for naming. It would decide the growth trajectory as well.
Step 4: Submit Required Documents and Obtain Approvals
After reserving the trade name, you need to submit the required documents to the DED and obtain the necessary approvals. The documents include the Memorandum of Association (MOA), Articles of Association (AOA), and other relevant documents. The approvals include a commercial permit, initial approval, and trade license.
Step 5: Register with Relevant Authorities
Finally, to successfully establish a mainland business in Dubai, it is imperative to register with the appropriate authorities. These include the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dubai Municipality, and the Ministry of Labor. These registrations are essential to ensure adherence to the legal requirements and regulations of the UAE.
It’s Time to Move Forward with your Business Venture
Setting up a mainland business in Dubai requires careful planning and execution. By following these five steps, you can establish a successful business in Dubai and contribute to the thriving business community in the UAE. But, to be in the right direction, it is always recommended to consult legal experts and business setup consultants in the UAE.
