Hello everyone! How's the weather where you live? It's too hot where I am; I hate how Spring (where I live) consists of cold days, a FEW warm one's, then the rest of it hot 😡 Most of you probably know this month is Asian-American & Pacific Island (AAPI) Heritage Month in the U.S. As an Asian myself I'm happy to celebrate my race and culture while uplifting other Asians. I'm a mixed South Asian and Chinese Caribbean (which also means the celebrations continue for others like me in June for Caribbean Heritage Month), a fusion that's kind of rare in the U.S., but nevertheless one I struggle to relate to. Most Asian literature and entertainment focus on those from the mainland (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, etc) so I couldn't sympathize or empathize with the characters 100%. I always felt like a bystander, constantly feeling left out or denied due to the fact I look racially ambiguous; only until I came across the Guyanese community here did I begin to feel more at ease with myself. I honestly don't know too much about Indo-Chinese-Guyanese culture but I know there are similarities. Right now I'm working on a list of Asian books I'll read for this month and can't wait to post my review of a contemporary novel that I can (finally!) closely relate to! It's an Indo-Guyanese-Canadian YA novel called In the Key of Nira Ghani by Natasha Deen, dealing with assimilation, culture-clash, and being a first generation Canadian.
