Chak De and SRK
(A couple of months ago, for the 15th anniversary of Chak De, I wrote this article for a publication. It was commissioned, edited and published, but it was taken down the same day. The editor told me it was “technical glitch” but now, it’s been 2.5 months and the glitch hasn’t been sorted. In the meantime, I’ve heard of other writers’ work being taken down from that site if it spoke about minority oppression.).
When I first watched Chak De! India 15 years ago, one of the things that instinctively bothered me, though I was too young to articulate it then, was that when Kabir Khan and his mother leave their home, amidst the accusation of being a ‘gaddar’, no neighbour or friend is standing up for them. Is there no one in their mohalla who they were friends with, I wondered? Wouldn’t someone miss them? And wouldn’t they silently, if not publicly, ask the others to be more kind?
Fifteen years later, I know the answer. They wouldn’t. We wouldn’t.
As I sit down to write this, the news coming in from everywhere is proof that nothing much has changed in the last 15 years. Things only seem to have become worse. I read on Twitter that the Indian Women’s hockey team has lost the Commonwealth Games Semi-Finals to Australia 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Fifteen years on, Indian women’s hockey is notoriously neglected. Gender discrimination is rampant. And, of course, Muslims are still perceived as enemies of the state.
No one knows this better than Shah Rukh Khan.
Chak De! India was a story of the quintessential underdog triumph. It wasn’t just the triumph of a women’s team over the dismal conditions and mentality of families, media, and fans. It was as much (if not more) the triumph of their Muslim coach in his attempt to prove his patriotism.
Chak De has achieved cult status in the country. There are still memes referencing 70 minutes of crucial and intense time. The title song became a national sports anthem, and the dialogues are a part of everyday life. The brawl scene in Mcdonald's became an example of implicit brand placements, mentioned in B-schools and quizzes. “Ja Dikha de apne launde ko” was a mantra of female solidarity. There’s a lot to celebrate about Chak De and the impact it has had on our pop culture over the decade and a half. A sports film par excellence, it doesn’t lose its thrill even with multiple rewatchings. And, of course, Shah Rukh is gorgeous.
It also marks one of the first times he truly embraced his Muslim identity on screen. (Sure, he played a Muslim in Hey Ram, but that never captured people’s imagination the way Chak De did). In Chak de, the Muslim identity is a crucial part of the plot, and it is emphasized with the references to his name, his betrayal, and his religious/inspirational chants. SRK goes on to play the Muslim protagonist in multiple films after this — My Name is Khan, Dear Zindagi, Raees, and the upcoming Pathan.
In 2017, journalist Rana Ayub said about SRK in an article on NDTV, “In a country where it is rare to find a Muslim or a Christian character as the lead in films, with minorities usually reduced to caricatures and stereotypes, the fact that the biggest star plays a Muslim in three simultaneous films (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Dear Zindagi, Raees) is a strong message to a country, a rebellion that needs to be noticed and lauded.”
This week, we have another movie releasing by two superstars: one a Muslim man, one married to a Muslim man, with children named after rulers who happen to be Muslim- Taimur and Jehangir. Calls to boycott the movie grow louder, the posters and WhatsApp messages about the same more and more disgusting. Aamir Khan has declared that he loves India. Of course, we need to wear our patriotism on our sleeves. Whether it is with a birth certificate or with the shouting of slogans, with the display of the National Flag or standing up in the movie hall when the anthem is played, we are all being asked to prove our patriotism again and again and again. No one more than Muslims in India.
If you are a privileged Muslim actor in India, you can continue making movies worth 100 crores that will face threats of boycott, and maybe your family members will end up in jail for months on flimsy charges. For a regular ordinary Muslim person, you might get lynched if you are suspected of eating a certain kind of meat.
In the final scenes of Chak De! India, the team overcomes all kinds of external and internal challenges to defeat the favourites, Australia, and win the tournament. Yet, it is not just the journey of the women who have faced gender stereotypes, family pressure, anger issues, and race and language discrimination. It is as much a journey of their Muslim coach, who will finally make it back ‘home’ where he was labeled a traitor and forced to leave. It is a grim picture that Chak De presents. That nothing will ever be enough to get the kind of acceptance and belonging all citizens of this country should feel. Maybe if you do something as grand as winning a world cup, you might be spared for a few days.
Maybe.

mihkokwaniy
by joshua whitehead
mihkokwaniy
my kokum has many names:
the indian woman
the whitehead lady
a saskatoon female
but my favourite is:
the beauty queen;
they never meant to call her beautiful
what they meant by beauty was:
cheapdirtybrownprostitutedrugaddictalcoholicfirewaterslut
when they write: “an indian about 35 years old
naked from the waist down
died from asphyxiation
at the queen’s hotel
effects of alcohol
&sedatives”
they don’t mean beauty as in:
mino iskwēw
or: “pleasing the sense or mind aesthetically;
of a very high standard; excellent”
what they mean is
she is beautiful for a squaw in ‘62
she pleases the body
of white men who burn in the loins
for the teal-shade of a browning bruise;
when i type into google
“how to say beautiful in cree”
i get: shaoulle
& when i type that into google i get:
“brutal murder-sex assault case”
seeRE:rinelleharpercindygladuetinafontaine
that’s my grandmother:
she is a mino iskwēw
the beauty queen
a woman with a name:
rose whitehead
&shediedbecauseofit
i read somewhere that saskatchewan
is an economic machine
for producing rape—
seed&honey
& in tisdale you can buy a mug that says:
the land of rape and honey
that’s where my kokum is buried
& her grave is a modest little place
where rabbits visit & sometimes chew
where little dandelions bloom
grant wishes to the wind
to her children who are scattered
across the plains of kanata
looking for a quick fix
& for anger to heal
or at least amend
like it does for a judge
who gifts a man six years
for the death of three women;
i think of my nôhtâwiy
her son who lost his name to a polish man
& felt the sting of day schools
even if priests beat & made honey
with their fists smooshed
into the sweet rot of little brown boys
who liked hockey & lived in suburbs
with whites who made them wait
in the freezing cold
& broke their noses on the ice—
but you’re still not ready to apologize
for that just white yet
my kokum has made many headlines:
“woman found strangled”
being the most consistent
a fifty word article that calls for sympathy
not for the “strangulation death
of the whitehead woman”
but for the man:
steven kozaruk of esterhazy
who “was suffering from the effects
of alcohol and sleeping pills”
even with a “seven-man jury”
& “thirteen witnesses,” lives—
his whiteness is his weakness
(even if its biceps can crack a brown neck like a wishbone)
and that weakness is his innocence;
the life of my kokum is worth:
six years & fifty words;
all these things overlap
interweave, interlay, interplay, interact
penes
|inter|intra|
|probo|capio|vita|
terra|corona|letum|nullius
tansimaslow
my kokum is famous
a real holly golightly
i bet she even eats
fried bologna sandwiches
at tiffanys
aint that right gran?
when i visit your grave
in saskatoon
i see the face of kozaruk
on the prairie scene
fatteninginsuburbia
& here you are
with a rag-tag little monument
made of sticks & leaves
stems from jackrabbits
that seem to visit often
a little blue ribbon
god knows from who
& a sad little brown boy
with a million questions like:
how are you doing?
do you hate klik too?
what would life have been like
if you had lived beyond thirtyfive?
would i be alive?
would the cancers in my dad
not have crept & lived
spelled doom on his skin?
would i be able to speak cree
without having to google translate
this for you?
would you make me cookies
& teach me how to sew back on the limbs
to my plush rabbit floppy ears?
would you call me “m’boy?”
& take me to sundances
powwows, bingo nights too?
would you make sure i feed the rez dogs
when they all come around?
would you make me a jingle dress
cause i want to be a pretty dancer like you—
would you teach me what it means to be two-spirit
tell me i can be a beautiful brown boy in love?
make me say niizh manitoag—feel the power on the tongue?
would you teach me to knead bannock
make life from lard—
a real ratio for reckoning?
hi kokum?
can i call you on the phone?
i promise not to call collect
i just want to hear your voice
tell you i learned what it means
to say i love you
& feel the whole of cree
coalescing in my breath:
kisâkihitin; my god, kisâkihitin
hey gran?
can i ask you something quick?
are you okay up there in godknowswhere?
do you see what we’ve all done?
my dad says these things all happen for a reason
that i wouldn’t be here if they didn’t
hey gran?
i’m sorry—
you know that right?
did you have to die for me to be alive?
heygranheygranheygranheygran
i’ll let you be
& stop being sick’ning
i bet you’re busy
cooking macaroniandtomatosoup
for twelve hundred missing & murdered women,
girls & two-spirit folk
it’s just, am i supposed to hate him, gran?
tell him that with one death
he ruined the lives of an entire family?
i want to tell him that the life of a person
is an archive of memory
& when you he strangled the life out of you
in a queens hotel shoddy little bed
the last gasping breath you exhaled
held in it little particles
fragments of time:
a bay leaf boiling in tomato sauce;
a flake of tuna that a
cat named randy
licked&licked&licked;
the soft cry of a baby boy
plummeting into day;
the smell of sweet grass smudging
monsters from our bedrooms;
tell him: when you kill a memory
you snuff out metaphor
turn off the light in a home;
you destroy a world where children
are nursing still&still;
—& aint that the hardest truth?
to be honest
i’m no aeneas
no marvellous country house poem
no faeryland, no golden world
no chimeric homeric epic
i’m just a little brown boy
queered by his colour
writing for a kokum he’s never met;
but i promise you:
these spaces can transform
an injun into a warrior
who can claw, scrape, fight
who can write on a piece of paper
sign a name instead of an ‘X’
that says, “this is my kokum
& her name is Rose Whitehead;
and she is
beauty queen extraordinaire.”
I dedicate this poem to all missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit peoples; for their families, friends, loved ones, and kin.  We are a collective trauma that demands to be examined, reconciled, resolved, and healed.
Today we survive; tomorrow we resist.

exact same shirt, two years apart.
(full story under the cut; 18+ please)
i weighed 225 in april 2020, up from 205 in december 2019 (no clue how that happened as life for me barely changed when the lockdowns started); i’m at 266 now, and i gained all this weight in 2021 and a little bit this year, believe it or not. i actually lost weight in quarantine, about 13 pounds: wasn’t eating much and things going on in my social life in the summer of quarantine contributed to the losses. tried getting it back over the winter, and more so when alex entered the picture. then my stepdad passed in april 2021 and all of a sudden, there was a lot more food in the house. i gained 25 pounds last summer, going from 221 to 246, followed by another five over the winter and then 15 spread out over the course of this year.
i don’t mind it: if anything, it feels good. healthy, even. my pants fit better (those old ones in the top pic fell down at every chance: they give me the biggest muffin top now 😅), everything is fuller and rounder, and i can eat a lot more—i feel stronger, too. i was always curious about the world beyond 220 pounds—from 2015 when i hit 200, to 2021 when my stepdad passed, i bounced around that range and i was curious about the 230s. now i’m actually looking at 270. 270 pounds, i should be gigantic (and my mom is planning on making gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies pretty soon here, too. gingerbread, with sugar, there’s also a few chocolate chip cookies and some oreos in the cupboard, and persimmon cookies atop the fridge. and she wants to make bread pudding at some point. and there’s apple pie in the fridge. and there’s chocolate on the coffee table before me. when i said “fuck diet culture”, i meant it.)
actually i kinda am gigantic now. i’m big.
just for reference, this was me in december 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this is me just now
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my bras are tighter now, too. i had difficulty keeping them on my shoulders in 2019/2020: they keep everything in place now, like they actually fit.
i felt emaciated back then, too. my stepdad, with all his problems, often snuck food when no one was looking, and objected to my mom and me treating ourselves. i couldn’t eat much—and you gotta eat. you gotta nourish yourself. he passed and suddenly, i could eat to my heart’s content, all the healthy food and all the sweet stuff.
my body widened out, i now have a definite double under my chin, and i have a potbelly now, and it’s kinda sexy, tbh. i feel really healthy: everything is where it should be and i haven’t had a cold or anything since 2019, interestingly enough. i do have a little snoring problem, but that’s about it, though. i’m not in pain and i’m not “aching” for anything. i was thin before the world came crashing down, but i wasn’t having a good time, though. i love to eat. i love sweet, fattening food. i love vegan food. i love meat and pasta and cheese. i love so-called guilty pleasures. i love mexican food, indian food, chinese food, japanese food, vietnamese food, filipino food, french food, german food, italian food, what the baltic countries do this time of year and just gorge until new year’s… i want to “eat across” a city some day. i love to eat, and i love to eat a lot.
i wish i got chubby as a teenager, if i’m honest. my story would have been so much different (just imagine: a fat field hockey player rather than a gaunt anorexic one, i probably would’ve stuck it out much longer). and i wish i could tell 13-year-old me that it’s really not at all bad because your body actually needs to be fed and that your thoughts are lying to you and the whole world is lying to you, actually, and you can feel good by eating whatever the hell you want, and come with me in unpacking diet culture and all the bullshit that makes women (and men) destroy their bodies all for the sake of chasing ideals which are pointless anyway because to change is to live and be human.
i remember being 19 on a camping trip to the oregon coast over thanksgiving 2012 and the backstory is it was a potluck dinner, and i brought a grasshopper pie because i’m actually from 1960. and no one touched it (one of the boys brought a pecan pie and that was more welcomed) and there was no room in the miniature fridge in our yurt. so, i ate this whole pie aside from two pieces missing. solo. on top of two helpings of thanksgiving dinner. three quarters of this creamy mousse pie made with crème de la menthe, marshmallow, and a chocolate crust. and this was well before i got heavy, too, this was back when i still weighed around 150 pounds, and before i dropped down to 139, too. i often think about that pie, too, how it made my then-slim belly swell up and it felt so right, and if i can do it now. i think that was the moment of clarity for me, in hindsight: the moment i thought, “i don’t want to torment myself anymore.” a fleeting thought, but i do remember thinking it.
in fact, i actually have a pretty distinct memory of being five or six years old and wishing i could eat everything and become fat, like i muttered it to myself when no one was paying attention (i looked at my naked body when no one was looking and i wished to be fat when no one was looking, the belly kink makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? 😜). i have no clue what happened to it, but my aunt used to have this old black and white photograph of me wearing denim jeans and cowgirl boots, and i had no shirt on, and i was pushing my belly out as far as i could go.
i wasn’t healthy thin, either. got sick a lot and nevermind b.m.i., it’s ableist and eugenicist and serves no one. you want to go with waist to hip ratio (those measurements divided by each other; you want under 0.80 to be considered healthy. and guess what? mine at the moment is 0.74, which is perfect. yes, even with my belly, i still pull off the numbers).
so, i have literally genuinely felt this desire to be a heavyweight my whole life: 5 year old me wanted a fat belly, 13 year old me wanted to look good, and 19 year old me wanted to feel good. it’s part of my truth. it’s just one part of who i am, and i’m finally just comfortable enough to talk about it.
so, as i write this, yes, i don’t feel negative about it (if anything… you want the truth? i don’t feel fat enough. it’s not like i’m lazy or sedentary, anyway: i’m gonna eat a big slice of apple pie with ice cream and whipped cream right now and then all my mom’s cookies, and everyone obsessed with dieting—and covering up—can die mad about it).
the last time i posted pix of myself, a bunch of people unfollowed me and blocked me. their loss, i say, especially when you see these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that faith no more shirt has been through so much: of course i love wearing it now)
another kind of interesting thing about gaining all this weight? i feel more tomboyish than ever. i’ll go through the fat-related tags on here sometimes and i’ll look at fat women, and they’re all very feminine. whatever rings true for you, absolutely (the one dress i have, i tried it on and from the side, i looked pregnant with my well-fed belly 🤷🏻‍♀️) but i think it’s interesting that there aren’t a lot of “sportier” girls such as myself. i want to keep wearing shirts and sexy camisoles and skinny jeans and flared jeans that accentuate my legs and my hips.
yeah, man. this is all me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
all 266 pounds 😈🥵😘

Hi ocelot
I'm compiling (how many things am I compiling now? Halp) a list of names resources so the next time someone (Ghosty) asks me for help with names I can just have a treasure trove at the ready. Do you have any place you frequent for name harvesting that you could offer me?
This is scary because I have been thinking a lot about this recently! I actually have a poll in my drafts where I was going to ask people this very same question, but I was going to wait and see if I thought of any more sensible options. I also called it harvesting!

I personally note down a lot of names I see in the wild and then use them years later, but if I need to seek out names of a specific country of origin I like to visit to the Wikipedia page for that country's third most recent election or the women's hockey team for a match in 2005 (or something like that) for a bit of authenticity.
I no longer trust name generators and baby name websites for such situations, because if you're not super familiar with the culture it's hard to know which names are common or extravagant. Often there will be a page of names which all have a meaning like 'princess', but one is the equivalent of 'Sarah' in English whereas the other one is actually the equivalent of 'Princess'. Big difference in tone for your character.
I think that when I was a teenager I tried to write a book set in India and had characters that were basically called 'River Fire' or something similar, based on naively trusting what I was told were Indian boy's names with cool meanings, and luckily I had a good friend who knew better to correct me and suggest some better alternatives. I ended up naming a character after her cousin, as proposed, and then killing him off. So yeah, friends are a pretty good resource too!
I would say that a large chunk of the names I've used recently are straight-up invented. I will just put a few letters together until I find a combination that feels right for the character. Kova. Patuni. Thlass. Perhaps they're also real names somewhere, perhaps not, but I just mashed my keyboard to get there, Glup Shitto style. For my fantasy or sci-fi settings, that works just fine. It's only for the others that I actually have to think.

I saw one post that Megan was tagged in. It was a bunch of videos of her in a club with a brown guy who looked to be in his 30s. I couldn't tell what his nationality was and wouldn't call him an "old, Indian man". Anyhow he felt her up more than once and she had a stack of bills that she was throwing single bills on the ground. I guess she was making it rain? The videos were weird and kind of sad. She honestly seemed very drunk or something. I don't know how to find them but there is an inactive Toronto bunny blog where several anons react to watching the videos.
It wasn't mentioned on LipstickAlley because they don't track Megan as hard now that she's not with her ex.
She seems to have dabbled in sex work when not being maintained by a rich boyfriend. There is tea about her on other SM. Auston must know. They're both from AZ and people gossip. It probably isn't a deal breaker for him. I could see her being more open to stuff that other women would complain about as long as he keeps buying her stuff and taking her on trips.
Pretty sure there are other WAGs who were escorts or sugar babies before they met their partners. Maybe some guys just don't care?
If it is a deactivated tumblr the posts are gone (unless someone reblogged them and has the link). She did work as a bottle girl at clubs for a while so it could have been from her time then, or are you saying this happened recently?
Crosbys gf is rumoured to have been one, some have or have had only fans, it is somewhat common but not all that much. I think that hockey players don’t generally date sex workers, but may hookup/ be involved with them that way, but not completely unheard of.

"when i first came to play in the n*h*l there was more politics in the game. In the first place - it was the cold war. When i walk into the dressing room i can feel that there were still some guys who dont like you - not because youre good or bad as a player but because you come from moscow - from the sov*et union"
Unsurprising. But i think what hurts the most is the way white men (and women) can have this same experience - but not translate it to other minorities. They will realize how shitty it is to be singled out for your country - to be othered. But not even think about how it would feel for a player who is gay. Or a player who is black, or native american, or muslim, or any identity outside of the "norm".
And thus decades later we get homophobes in the dressing room claiming religion as a way to say 'we dont want *you* here specifically, you gay people'. (btw gentle reminder if you are a hockey fan who hasnt watched Indian Horse yet, please do!!!)

WhatsApp Groups- The posts & Junk within!
Most of us are members in many of the WhatsApp groups, but one thing that one finds in common in them is that in all these groups, majority of forwards, videos, write ups or stories of political propaganda of one or the other political or a religious ideology trying to drill down deep in us, in an attempt to brain wash us completely to make us believe what they wish to propagate, on a given date are the same and in some cases, a story that is posted on one date in one group, you would find that it had already appeared in another group one or a few days ago or you would most likely find it posted in a day or two in another group. The recent examples being the story about the footballer Lionel Messi or the victory of Indian Women Hockey Team in FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2022.
Out of hundreds of these every day posts, one would find only a few posts informative adding to one’s knowledge or enough entertaining to bring smiles on one’s face!
Seeing such posts and their repetitions, one is given to think, the members are either too eager to share at least something or the other in the group to make their presence felt or too enthusiastic to add to the knowledge of other members or in many of the cases they are too casual to forward the posts, thus adding to the junk!

On Sunday, the nation witnessed one of the greatest days in Indian sporting history. India won two gold medals in the 45th edition of the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary in both the Open and Women’s competitions.
In the Open competition, team of Gukesh D, Praggnanandhaa R, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala, with Srinath Narayanan as the captain, led throughout the tournament, winning 10 matches and drawing just one. The women's team of Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali R, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev, with Abhijit Kunte as the captain, demonstrated excellent composure and delivered, winning the final match against Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5.
2024 has been a special year for Indian sports. The Indian men’s cricket team finally ended an 11-year wait for a global title. At the Olympics, shooter Manu Bhaker achieved a series of firsts with two bronze medals and the Indian men’s hockey team won a second consecutive bronze.
And earlier this month, India would sign off from the Paralympics with 29 medals, registering their best performance ever in the multi-sport event.

Is hockey really the national game of India?
Hockey is often considered the national sport of India due to its historical significance and past successes, particularly during the mid-20th century when India won multiple Olympic gold medals in field hockey. However, India does not have an officially declared national sport. In 2009, a parliamentary response stated that there is no formal recognition of hockey as the national game, even though it holds a special place in Indian sports culture.
As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, there is renewed interest in field hockey, with the Indian men's and women's teams aiming for strong performances. The recent successes of the Indian hockey teams, including the bronze medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, have reignited enthusiasm and support for the sport. Despite cricket's dominance in popularity, hockey continues to inspire a dedicated following, and efforts are being made to revive and promote it ahead of the upcoming Olympics.

National Sports Day in India is celebrated annually on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand. Widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players in the history of the sport, he is often referred to as the "Wizard of Hockey" due to his exceptional skills and ability to control the ball.
Significance of National Sports Day:
Tribute to Major Dhyan Chand: This day serves as a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, who brought glory to India by leading the Indian hockey team to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. His remarkable achievements established India as a dominant force in hockey during his era.
The National Sport of India:
Every country typically has a national sport that is held in high regard and symbolizes national pride both domestically and internationally. Many assume cricket or hockey to be India’s national sport, but the reality is that India has not designated any official national sport.
Hockey as the Unofficial National Sport: While hockey has been informally considered India's national sport due to the country's exceptional performance in it, particularly in the early to mid-20th century, it has never been officially declared as such.
India's prowess in hockey is highlighted by:
▪️Winning eight Olympic gold medals.
▪️Producing legendary players like Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh Sr., and Dhanraj Pillai.
▪️Securing six consecutive Olympic gold medals from 1928 to 1956.
Despite these accomplishments, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has confirmed that no sport has been officially recognized as India’s national sport.
Which is the National Sport of India?
Contrary to popular belief, India does not have an officially designated national sport. While many assume hockey holds this title due to its historical significance and successes, this is not the case.
India’s Hockey Legacy:
The Indian hockey team is the most successful in Olympic history, with a record of eight gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. From 1928 to 1956, India experienced its golden years in hockey, winning six consecutive Olympic golds. The nation has produced legendary players like Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh Sr., and Dhanraj Pillai. Under Balbir Singh’s leadership, India secured its fifth Olympic gold at the 1952 Helsinki Games.
National Sports Day of India:
On August 29th, India observes National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The day also honours the nation’s sports heroes and champions, recognizing their contributions and dedication to bringing honour to the country.
Father of Indian Hockey: The three-time Olympic gold medalist Major Dhyan Chand is regarded as the founding father of Indian hockey, and his birthday, August 29, is observed as National Sports Day in India. Hockey has come to be regarded as India’s unofficial national sport due to the successes of Dhyan Chand and other players.
Indian Hockey Team’s Achievements in the Olympics:
India's dominance in hockey, introduced by the British, led to it surpassing many popular sports and becoming the country's most celebrated sport. The Bengal Hockey Association was India’s first hockey association, and today, Hockey India, a part of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, governs all men’s and women’s hockey activities in India. Based in New Delhi, it is a member of the Indian Olympic Association.
The Evolution of Sports in India:
Over the years, India’s sporting landscape has evolved significantly. The Indian government, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has implemented various initiatives to promote sports at the grassroots level. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) plays a crucial role in managing India’s participation in international sporting events, including the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. The government’s focus has shifted towards a more holistic development of sports, with an emphasis on nurturing young talent.
Initiatives like the Khelo India program aim to identify and support young athletes across various sports disciplines. This approach has resulted in a broader representation of sports in India, moving beyond the traditional dominance of hockey and cricket.
The Importance of a National Game:
While India may not have an official national game, the concept of a national sport holds significant importance for countries worldwide.
A national game can:
▪️Foster national pride and patriotism among citizens.
▪️Attract international attention and generate soft power for the country.
▪️Contribute to the tourism industry and economic growth.
▪️Promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy competition.
▪️Preserve traditional sports and pass them down to future generations.
The Future of Indian Sports:
As India continues to make strides in various sports, the question of whether a national game should be declared remains a topic of debate. Some argue that declaring a national game could provide a sense of identity and pride, while others believe it could limit the growth of other sports. For now, the government’s approach of promoting multiple sports appears to be working, with India achieving success in a diverse range of disciplines.
The Indian hockey team’s recent performances, including a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, indicate that the sport still holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. However, the rise of other sports, such as badminton, boxing, and wrestling, showcases the potential of India’s sporting talent on the global stage.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, while hockey has historically been considered the national game of India, the reality is that no sport holds this official title. The government’s decision to focus on promoting all sports equally reflects a commitment to nurturing a diverse sporting culture. For students preparing for government exams, understanding this nuanced approach to sports in India is essential, as it highlights the country’s evolving sports policy and the importance of inclusivity in national development.
Whether or not India ever declares an official national game, the spirit of sportsmanship and the pursuit of excellence in various sports will continue to define the nation’s athletic identity. As India prepares to host and compete in more international events, the world will witness the emergence of new sports icons who will carry forward the legacy of champions like Major Dhyan Chand.
Theme For National Sports Day 2024:
The theme for National Sports Day 2024 is ‘Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies’. This theme highlights how athletics can strengthen social bonds, unite individuals, and empower communities to promote inclusivity and peace.
How is National Sports Day Celebrated?
National Sports Day is celebrated with various competitions, sports events, and activities in schools, colleges, and sports organizations. Events often include marathons, fitness competitions between schools, athlete tribute ceremonies, and fitness challenges. Educational institutions also conduct seminars and workshops to emphasize the importance of sports and fitness.
How Can Individuals Participate on National Sports Day?
On National Sports Day, individuals can participate in physical activities and sports, host or attend neighborhood sporting events, go to workshops and seminars, and use social media to advocate for the advantages of an active lifestyle.
