Monument Shopping Center is very lively at night with lights and signs that remind me of being in India. Several newish eateries opened in this shopping center this year, including Chaiwala Shop. Most  of the patrons of this shopping center are Indian.

The menu includes ten kinds of chai, available hot or iced, snacks, coffee, badam masala, pink milk, fresh juices, refreshers, shakes, Maggi masala, Indian burgers, Indian pizza, and Indian sandwiches, etc.

Cardamom masala ($4.50, hot): creamy and sweet. It was sweeter than I expected, but did taste handcrafted. I could see the spices and even the film that sometimes forms on top

Bun maska ($4): a soft round bun (looked like a hamburger bun and tasted like the rolls they use for pav bhaji), split and slathered with butter and cream. It’s sweet and buttery. It was okay. Very simple.

The shop is open late and has free wi-fi but it’s not cozy or comfortable. The chairs are hard. They leave the door open and it’s cold outside and cold and drafty inside. The lights are far too dim and the machine that they use to brew chai seems very noisy.

Food: 4/5 –  Lots of Indian snacks and food to choose from, including pizza, burgers, maggi masala, and sandwiches. The bun maska was simple but good (a bun slathered in butter and cream).

Coffee: 4/5 –  It’s a tea shop, so they have ten kinds of chai. The cardamom chai was milky and sweeter than I expected. They also have smoothies, juices, refreshers, and shakes.

Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, ask for the password

Ambiance: 2/5 – The decor is quite plain and very brown, the lighting is yellowish

Noise: 2/5 – The music is loud and so is the chai machine.

Plugs: 4/5 –Saw a few

Parking: 5/5 – Easy parking in the shopping center

Comfort: 1/5 – Unpadded wooden chairs are hard. They leave the door open on cold nights. The lights are too dim at night.

Bathroom: 3/5 – Single restroom

Art: 3/5 – None

Tips: Outdoor seating is also available. You can sweeten the chai to taste.

Honest Indian Vegetarian Restaurant, 3658 Capitol Ave Suite M, Fremont, CA 94538

I didn’t realize Honest was vegetarian until I started typing this review. The Indian street food menu is extensive (Indo-Chinese fried rice, noodles), paratha, sandwiches, Bombay chaat & snacks (e.g., pani puri, samosa, vada pav), dosas, Indian pizza, tawa, and several kinds of bhaji pav. Honest started as a street food cart in Ahmedabad, India in 1975. The food is made from scratch and they claim to not use frozen or processed products.

Vada pav (2 pieces, $10.49): This looked so good: two thick deep fried potato patties on soft pav rolls (similar to Hawaiian rolls but not as sweet), sprinkled with crunchy bits, and served with two sauces (cilantro chutney, tamarind chutney). The pav rolls were warm, soft, and fresh. The potato patties were hot with a crunchy exterior and spiced with mustard seeds and probably garam masala or something similar. They tasted like a samosa only in patty form. The patties or the spread on the pav were rather salty though. The tamarind chutney was very sweet. And the crunchy bits that they added weren’t crunchy or hot.

Chai ($3.49): It was a small glass but milky, not too sweet, and deliciously spiced. Sugar was provided on the side.

The restaurant is in a new building, and it looks clean and is spacious. All the diners during my visit were Indian. Jain and Swaminarayan options are available.

So anyway -

The point is that Pizza Tower still has a racist, outdated stereotype of Indigenous people in the Oregano Desert level.

It even has a achievement for rain dancing around a totem pole (totem poles are a Pacific Northwest thing, not a Plains Tribe thing). They war cry at you and they throw tomahawks (because it's always tomahawks or spears).

Bellyache about the screencaps being 5 years old if you want, but the stereotype made it into the game, so he hasn't changed that much. He didn't change enough to have a shred of awareness about using a racist stereotype. And before anyone tries: that trope isn't a hallmark of Wario games or 90s animation, it's a hallmark of racism.

Even if he "doesn't" make bigoted jokes anymore (though I would consider the Tribe Cheese one such joke), he made an entire level based around that trope.

And like every other time there's an anti-Indigenous caricature in videogames or popular media, it doesn't get mentioned, or it gets glossed over because the creator went "Oopsie! That was cringe."

The exclusion of the Tribe Cheese from that salvo of screenshots undermines the entirety of it, because it's a solid example of him not having changed enough to be conscious beyond "that was unfunny," and everyone just focuses on what he said and when - without the connection to how that mindset still lingers in the final product of the game.
