Downsized Commonwealth Games 2026: A Heavy Cost for Indian Sports
The passing of Queen Elizabeth II seems to have influenced the Commonwealth Games 2026, particularly concerning the venues and the reduced number of sports featured in this major event. Originally, the host city was to be Victoria, Australia, but rising costs associated with hosting 22 sports have compelled the city to withdraw. The Commonwealth Games have always held a special place for the late queen, who played a significant role in popularizing this event among the 74 Commonwealth nations, home to nearly 2.5 billion people—about one-third of the world’s population...click here to read more

What do you make of the moment when Kate shrugged William's hand on a Christmas show in 2019? The sugars use this to show how they actually hate each other, but I've always thought Kate just reacted immediately because they never did PDA and she was caught by surprise, as in to say "what are you doing? we're working"
I've been following the BRF since the Sussex drama, so I don't have decades the reflect on, but from what I've seen, it really seemed there was a no PDA rule. They also appeared much stuffy, even towards each other, with Kate standing straighter, making sure she was walking behind William, often keeping her hands in front of her as if to protect herself. But the last years, the seem more at ease in public, allowing some hands on the back here and there. And I've actually been wondering if H&M overdoing it with the PDA meant the BRF could actually relax a bit and allow some touching without looking unprofessional.
There isn’t a “no PDA” rule. The rule is that everyone is expected to be professional at work. And PDA - over the top PDA like the Sussexes - is not professional behavior in any industry, in any profession, in any country in the world.
William and Kate are affectionate and playful with each other. They always have been, long before Meghan had Harry in her claws:
Before their engagement: L - Graduating St. Andrews in 2005 C - Saying hello at polo in 2006 R - Paparazzi catching them making out. Date unknown, suspected sometime 2009 (based on William's hair).
Newlyweds: L - Canada, July 2011 C - Edinburgh, July 2011 R - London Olympics 2012
Early Parenthood: L - Christmas Walk, December 2013 C - Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, July 2014 R - Rugby World Cup, September 2015
Before the Love Bomb: L - Hiking in India, April 2016 (there's a well-known story from royal reporters on the India trip that William and Kate were close and affectionate until they spotted the reporters and photographers. Once they saw the royal rota, they immediately separated and became more formal/professional.) C - Private family ski trip, February 2016 R - Canada, September 2016
Before Meghan made her official debut with Harry and the BRF: L - Heads Together awareness event, February 2017 R - Wimbledon Men's Final, July 2017
And no, I didn't see "the incident" as Kate shrugging off William's hand because it was PDA. I see that moment as Kate adjusting her position in her seat and William briefly touching her. If you watch the clip, you'll notice that Kate's whole body wiggles; her shoulders, her trunk, and her legs. William just happened to touch her in that same moment. If she was shrugging him off, if she was recoiling from his touch, only her shoulder would have moved. It was a harmless, normal moment that happens to everyone.
Others may see it differently, and that's fine.
Harry and Meghan overdoing it with the PDA didn't open any doors for anyone to be more affectionate or show more affection. All they did was highlight the difference between working professionals who a) know they're on the job, b) know their roles for the job, and c) know that their job is bigger than their individual needs and people who think their love and togetherness is more important than the job.

Two weeks ago, female wrestler Vinesh Phogat became the first woman from India to make the Olympic finals—and was promptly disqualified for being 100 grams overweight.
On August 9, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from the sport of wrestling in a post on X. After the previous day’s incidents, it was a message that many had been expecting.
Vinesh experienced the highest of highs at the Paris Olympics. She defeated an unbeaten Olympic champion wrestler who was considered not just the favourite in her weight division but across every weight division at the quadrennial event. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, Vinesh also faced the lowest of lows at the Olympics. No one had ever reached an Olympic final only to be denied the chance to compete because they had failed to make weight on the day of the competition.
Vinesh had taken her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking at least to be awarded a silver medal by virtue of reaching the final. If she had succeeded, she would have set a precedent, but, much to the disappointment of the nation, her appeal was turned down by the sole arbitrator, Annabelle Bennett.
...
Vinesh has always been a fighter. Tragedy has followed her, yet somehow, against the odds, she has emerged victorious.
When she was nine, her father was shot dead by someone in her village, believed to be a mentally disturbed relative, just outside their front door. Her mother, a young widow, refused the custom of marrying her husband’s brother. She battled cancer single-handedly. Through it all, she raised a firebrand daughter, who refused to back down.
Her cousins, who grew up near her home, were the more famous girls of the family. Geeta and Babita were among the first to win gold at the Commonwealth Games. They had a movie made about them — Dangal — which made the ‘Phogat sisters’ iconic in Indian sports.
Vinesh didn’t feature in that movie. The events described in it took place too early in her career. But she wouldn’t be satisfied with being one of the Phogat sisters — she would become ‘The Phogat’ sister.
Talk to any of her peers .— and even some of her rivals in Indian wrestling – and there is, in some cases, grudging, genuine respect. She is considered the most instinctive and natural wrestler India has ever produced in women’s freestyle wrestling.
Her career is as much a highlight reel as anything out of a movie. No one in women’s wrestling compares. No Indian woman wrestler has won three Commonwealth gold medals as she did in 2014, 2018, and 2022. No one has won an Asian Games gold medal as she did in 2018. No one has won two World Championships medals as she did in 2019 and 2022.
The one medal missing from her collection is the Olympic medal — which she fought bitterly for.
...
Vinesh has had terrible luck at the Olympics — the only competition that seems to matter to Indians. In 2016, she was one of the favourites in the Indian team before her knee was bent out of shape in the quarterfinals. In 2020, she was one of the world’s favourites to medal in the women’s 53kg weight class. Then, suddenly, a freak weight cut left her physically and psychologically broken, unable to coordinate her movements on the mat. She lost to a wrestler she had beaten comfortably just a month before. Now, in Paris, another poor weight cut left her at the lowest point of her wrestling career.
Her battles, though, haven’t been restricted to the mat. Perhaps the most significant one Vinesh has fought has been for the safety of young girls in the sport. In pursuing this fight, she took on one of the most powerful men in Indian sports — Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
When her rivals were preparing for the Olympics, Vinesh was fighting on the streets of New Delhi, where she, and few other fellow wrestlers, accused Brij Bhushan, a five-time member of parliament and the long-time president of the Wrestling Federation, of sexual harassment.
The longer she stayed on the streets, the slimmer her chances on the mat became. Yet, she continued to prioritise what she felt was right. In doing so, Vinesh showed the kind of courage almost uniformly lacking in most sportspersons in India. Most of them, as the saying goes, “crawl when asked to bend.” Vinesh’s spine has been ramrod straight. She had the courage to take on the system without caring about the consequences. She displayed it even though it cost her what she loved the most — the chance to wrestle.
Only when her protest was forced off the streets and entered the court did Vinesh finally get a chance to compete.
This article delves into her struggle to rein in her weight as the Olympic timeline unfolded. It's horrifying to read.
TW for fatphobia and people with eating disorders and body dysmorphia: fatphobia:
Even as she had been winning, Vinesh’s nutritionist had been nervously monitoring her food and fluid intake.
She had a celebratory glass of juice in the morning right after she had first made weight – 300 grams. She had another couple of litres of fluid to rehydrate herself before her bout - another 2000 grams of body weight gained. A couple of light snacks throughout the day to keep her energy up meant 700 grams more.
By the time Vinesh was done with her day’s competition, she weighed 52.7 kg.
August 7:
As the hours rolled into the night, it was clear that something had gone very wrong. After weeks of dehydration, the human body, once it gets rehydrated, simply refuses to give up water. Even urination becomes impossible.
Vinesh didn’t sleep all through the night of August 6. She was on the treadmill for six hours and in the sauna for another three. She didn’t consume a bite of food or drink a drop of water. Every few hours, she stood on a weighing scale. The numbers were getting smaller but not fast enough. In desperation, her coaches trimmed the elastic in the bottom of her costume. They thought of chopping her hair and then did it.
But the scale didn’t budge.
The function of weight classes is to prevent outsized mismatches in strength due to body mass and minimize injury. Pathologizing what is clearly water weight to this extent and subjecting athletes to this kind of psychological torture due to minute variables is simply making what is essentially a safety measure into a punitive arbitrary criteria that has huge implications for racialized fatphobia for female athletes and the reinforcement of toxic diet culture across the board. It's misogynistic, unscientific and fucked. This article goes into more detail about Phogat's career-long battle with her weight— a yo-yo of losing too much, and then too little. Indistinguishable from an eating disorder, only one imposed by the standards of international sports.
You will never convince me that a white athlete would have been disqualified in the lightest weight category for a weight less than a bar of soap. The disqualification retroactively places her dead last, which is added cruelty. The refusal to revise this and even award her a joint silver is just adding racist insult to racist injury.
Phogat spoke two days ago about her devastation at being disqualified by racism and fatphobia with a three page post on twitter.
And on top of all of this, because the Indian National Congress political party welcomed her with a road show that outshone the alt-right BJP's own planned welcome, the Hindutvas in her own country have launched a hate campaign against her.
This copy-paste has "disqualified in Rio 2016" trending on twitter. It's doubly cruel and fatphobic because she wasn't disqualified for being overweight, she sustained a knee injury.
After the witch hunt against Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, I'm just so fucking done with the Olympics. The outsize importance of this competition is nothing but an anvil to break entire careers on and offers female athletes of colour on a platter for all the world's vultures.
#I grew up watching my own country beating Susanthika Jayasinghe to the ground#and then seeing her husband arrested for domestic abuse and battery after her career ended#and then the treatment of Caster Semenya left such a collective scar on so many women of colour and Black women#it all just keeps building up man#i'm really glad algeria turned out the way it did for imane#i hope they don't turn on her too down the line#but it feels like too much to hope for#vinesh phogat#i had no idea Dangal was based on her family! go watch it on Netflix it's really good!#india#racism#misogyny#fatphobia#tw harrassment#tw hate#anti bjp#indian politics#olympics 2024#women's wrestling#ableism#tw body dysmorphia#tw weight loss#colonialism#white supremacy#knee of huss

Worldbuilding for Werewolves in the Workplace
I actually typed out a bunch of my worldbuilding for Werewolves in the Workplace, instead of my usual cryptic scribbles on random bits of paper, so I thought I'd pop it into a Tumblr post in case anyone's interested.
Disclaimer: Here be spoilers for Werewolves in the Workplace, and these are my working notes, which means they're not all fully fleshed out explanations, because I knew what I meant :)
Under the cut cause long plus spoilers.
Vampire abilities
If it's the vampire acting on the world or the ability just affects the vampire, it's fair game; if it requires the world to change, no. Much of the stuff in Dracula that marks him as explicitly different (appearance, not healing) and could be used by someone to identify a vampire if it was accurate is propaganda, baby!
Off the table are things like: not reflecting in mirrors, can't enter a home uninvited (because that creates a physical barrier they can't pass), can't cross running water (because either some property in the water would have to change to create a barrier, or all vampires would have to be hydrophobic), afraid of/are stopped/burned by religious symbols (since it doesn't require the vampire to be a believer, there'd need to be some inherent vampire-repelling property in all religious symbols, or all vampires would have to be religiophobic).
Things that ride the line, eg enthralling, are yes with caveats, eg the person has consented, is impaired in some way, or believes they can be influenced without consent. They can phase (turn into vapour) because that's how they escape wherever they were entombed as dead after the change, since a lot of human cultures put their dead in inescapable situations. (That's how Nat escaped her grave, not that she's told anyone that). It's an instinctual ability that only some vampires retain the ability to use consciously.
A stake through the heart doesn't end them, you have to sever the spine, but they still turn to ash/dust.
Werewolf legal status
Werewolves were given legal recognition in the UK and the US in World War One so they could be drafted. It started in the UK, quickly followed by many Commonwealth countries, and then the US. Their legal status in other countries at that point varied; in some Nordic countries, they'd been recognised since the mid-1800s.
In WW1 in the UK, a werewolf tried to enlist in the Army, was denied on the grounds that he was a werewolf, and fought the decision through the courts, but the refusal was upheld. (This was amazing PR for werewolves and garnered a lot of public support: brave and patriotic werewolf wants to fight for his country and is denied etc.) However, the government realised werewolves were a fantastic source of near unkillable bodies they could throw at the Hun and pushed through legislation recognising werewolves as having the same legal status as humans and then promptly drafted the fuck out of them. Similar legislation was quickly introduced in Canada, New Zealand and some other Commonwealth countries, as well as Australia and India, where they was no draft but they were soon being turned away due to the sheer numbers of volunteers. The US quickly followed suit, because the military knows a good source of cannon fodder when it sees one.
Makin' werewolves
Werewolves and humans can interbreed but the offspring will only be a werewolf if the pregnant parent is the werewolf and they shift during the pregnancy. Pregnant werewolves pass the werewolf potential through the placental barrier; shifting while pregnant activates it and the baby shifts, too. If the pregnant parent is human, or the werewolf parent carrying the baby never shifts, the baby will be human. The same is true for werewolf x werewolf parents; the pregnant werewolf still has to shift during pregnancy for the baby to be born a werewolf, but it would be very unusual for them not to.
A human can only be made into a werewolf by being bitten with intent, which activates special salivary glands that produce the werewolf 'infection'—and it must be introduced into the body by a deep bite from a werewolf in wolf form; injecting it or swallowing it has zero impact—or because the werewolf parent that carried them shifted during pregnancy.
Vampire legal status
Vampires were given legal recognition in the early 1980s in the US and UK (with a similar knock-on effect to some other Commonwealth countries) under Regan and Thatcher respectively, because they were both approached by rich vampires who'd been passing as human with the money, power, and attitude to appeal to those fucks. Both Regan and Thatcher were hoping/expecting to get turned but even the most amoral vampire has more class and respect for the world than to inflict those fuckers on eternity.
The UK/US weren't the first. There were already a few countries that gave legal recognition to vampires, primarily in Europe, but even after the US and the UK picked it up, it was much slower to spread than werewolf recognition and a few countries passed laws that did the opposite—explicitly stated that vampires, being dead, had no more standing at law than a corpse and no one committed an offense if they disposed of one.
Random trivia: In order to make ending a vampire a criminal offence criminal codes/laws had to be amended, because homicide (murder, manslaughter et al) requires killing, ie taking a life, and vampires aren't alive. Some extremely conservative US states simply failed to amend their criminal laws, which means someone who ends a vampire there does not commit a criminal offence.
There were also a whole lot of interesting lawsuits after vampires gained legal status around whether life insurance policies had be paid out and whether wills were binding, given the person was still walking around (with insurance policies and succession legislation being amended quick smart).
Lyc-C or Lycanthropic Cancer (warning for discussion of terminal cancer, suicide)
Lyc-C is a cancer that only affects werewolves. It hijacks werewolf healing, which makes it basically impossible to treat. If a werewolf with Lyc-C gets an injury or any kind of damage that activates their healing, that feeds the growth of Lyc-C. This means surgery (or chemo) is rarely a good solution unless it's guaranteed the surgery will get all of it—and surgery on a werewolf is incredibly difficult—because both those things activate werewolf healing, which cause the Lyc-C to grow faster.
Werewolves with Lyc-C in a benign location can live with it for several years if they're extremely careful, don’t get injured, don't do anything to activate their healing, and never shift. If they manage that, Lyc-C will grow very slowly, but it's only a temporary solution. If it appears in a non-benign place - the lymph system, an organ, the brain etc - it will kill them fast.
Once the Lyc-C starts to seriously grow the end is inevitable. The damage it does activates their healing, which causes it to grow faster and spread in a vicious unstoppable cycle until the damage is enough to kill the werewolf. A lot of werewolves choose to suicide (or opt for assisted dying if that's an option where they live) when they know it's going to reach that point.
Vampire blood does end up being the key to a finding a cure. The team using Steve and Dr Erskine's blood have almost cracked it by the time Werewolves in the Workplace starts.
Dr Erskine's symbiosis speculation
Bucky thinks Steve was making things up to throw Shark-eyes off, but Dr Erskine genuinely speculates that vampires started out in a symbiotic relationship with humans. That thousands and thousands of years ago, they were a core part of some human cultures, taking on the role of protector after death. As the world changed and cultures changed, they were no longer wanted or needed, and ended up as predators.

I wanna hear about halo geopolitics so, lay it on me. Go as some might say "hog wild".
I’ll limit myself to just talking about earth to keep this relatively brief.
Starting in the Americas, the United States collapses and its “political remnants” merge with Canada and Mexico to form the United Republic of North America (URNA). We don’t know much, except for that the Commonwealth of Kentucky broke away from the United States, and then joined the URNA as an independent body, and it’s likely this happened for much of the US. The URNA doesn’t have much sway politically in the UN [also, there’s a distinction between the “former UN” and UN, we’ll just say UN for the new one for simplicity’s sake] and is mostly the site for a lot of military industrial production/recruitment.
We don’t have much information about the rest of Central and South America except that the Rainforest Wars were fought there in the mid 22nd century between the UN, communist rebels, and fascist paramilitaries that had been paid by corporations to put down the rebels but then broke off on their own. But we do know that Cuba becomes a world power after building a space elevator, so hey, there’s that.
Moving east to Europe, the European Union still exists and while we don’t know that all of the UK is part of it, or that the UK even still exists, we do know that London is part of the EU at least, and may be a city-state now as a result. The 2015 novel Halo: Saint's Testimony mentions the North Atlantic Protectorate forming and at least part of Scotland being in it, it seems this has replaced the United Kingdoms as a political body. Also not only does Czechoslovakia reform, but Halo: Nightfall mentions a character being born in the “Greater Czechoslovakian Authority” and we have basically nothing else lmao.
Hopping down to Africa, this is the continent we see the most of in-game, but politically is a bit muddled. We have a lot of information about what’s happening there at the time of the games, but not the history leading up to it, outside of Africa largely being wealthy and industrialized and having broken free of the economic imperialism that constricts it in the current day. We know from a Halo 2 map description that a number of African countries band together in what’s called the East African Protectorate, including Tanzania and Kenya, but both of these countries have dedicated paragraphs in the Halo Encyclopedia (2009 edition) and neither mentions this EAP, so it may have been abandoned as an idea for the setting. It’s also the same name Britain used for colonized Kenya so maybe it’s for the best they haven’t brought it up again.
Moving further east once again, we know that Korea, China, Japan, India, and Pakistan all hold a lot of sway in the UEG. Korea unifies and becomes a scientific/technological powerhouse, China maybe colonizes Vietnam (or maybe they just join up peacefully? doesn’t seem super likely given what we know about history between them) and becomes a major player, funding/launching much of the early colonization efforts into space.
Also because of the United Earth Government now, it seems that most countries don’t really exist as independent bodies anymore, and some sources call all nations defunct, it’s a bit unclear. It seems most like they exist as states/provinces now? I didn’t even mention all the megacorporations that seem to have more power than nations at this point, ok I’m gonna cut myself off here. Anyway if anyone actually read this far mwah mwah kissing you on the forehead sorry this was not brief at all lmao. Know that I could’ve said more!

INDIAN FEMALE WRESTLERS AND OTHER ATHLETES
Wrestlers, led by Olympic bronze medal winners Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, first took to the streets of New Delhi in protest on January 18. They accused Singh and several coaches of the sport’s governing body of sexually harassing female athletes.
Commonwealth Games women’s gold winner Vinesh Phogat said coaches and the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) have sexually harassed multiple women.
“Women wrestlers have been sexually harassed at national camps by coaches and also the WFI president,” the 28-year-old athlete said in January.
“I know at least 10 to 20 girls in the national camp who have come and told me their stories,” she told reporters.
Following government assurance that an oversight committee would look into the allegations, the wrestlers called off the initial protests on January 20. The sports also ministry stripped the WFI top brass of all administrative powers.
But Malik, who was India’s first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal, said withdrawing the January protest was a “mistake.”
“The report by the oversight committee was not made public and we have reasons to believe the culprits got a clean chit,” said Malik, who won the women’s 58kg freestyle bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The demonstrations resumed last month following what the protesters say was government inaction. In a letter to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief, PT Usha, the wrestlers wrote that Phogat was “mentally harassed and tortured” by Singh after she missed out on an Olympic medal in Tokyo in 2021, which led her to almost contemplate suicide.
The letter also alleged financial misappropriation on the part of the WFI with Singh at its helm.

Decided today that I have spent too much time lately seeing and hearing Tim Minchin play bit parts in other people’s shows, while I watch old comedy festival clips on YouTube and listen to Mark Watson’s radio shows and things like that, and not enough time on his own stuff. It’s probably been 3 or 4 years since I last had a night of just clicking through Tim Minchin videos and watching them. I used to do that every six months or so.
I’ve spent this morning fixing that, and it’s a great way to spend a morning. I start, as always, with the first Tim Minchin video I ever saw, and work outward from there. I remember it well, one day in 2014 when my friend from New Zealand was crashing on my couch for a couple of weeks. He was training for the Commonwealth Games, so he basically had a month of incredibly hard exercise and eating almost nothing (weight cutting: it’s bad for you and you shouldn’t do it, kids, I do not endorse it, but sometimes if you do it really well they let you fly to Glasgow and get beaten up by people from India, so that’s pretty cool), and was sore and exhausted all the time, so we’d get back from practice together and just lie down on the living room carpet and talk about nothing as a distraction from being sore and tired.
One night, we’d gone from discussing our shared left-wing political views to our shared views on what women in our sport were most attractive, and then started questioning whether the second discussion might sort of clash with the first. And he said, “I have to show you something,” and opened his laptop. We’d already bonded over shared love of Flight of the Conchords, so he was confident that our comedy tastes overlapped enough for this to not be wasted on me. And it wasn’t. I watched that one and immediately demanded to see more of this strange red-haired man. This red-haired man gets it.
youtube
Here are a couple of my other favourites, discovered since then:
youtube
youtube
The time he raised money to help survivors of the Catholic Church’s sex crimes to fly to Rome and hear evidence about it, by writing a song in which he called a Cardinal accused of covering it up a God damn coward:
youtube
I just listened to this one for the first time in several years, and I can’t believe I never realized before that the Chocolate Milk Gang has a theme song:
youtube
It occurred to me today that I haven’t seen much of him recently, and thought I’d look up what he’s done in the last few years. And good news! This isn’t a case of one of those people used to be awesome but then you find out they went in some terrible direction or other. These days, as far as I can tell, the biggest difference is that he’s moved away from the comedy-about-serious-subjects and toward more serious songs, which are beautiful and seem to be mainly about how much he loves his wife and kids. He’s grown his hair even longer and looks a bit like Bill Bailey now. So that’s pretty much the ideal answer when you think “I wonder what that guy who was great ten years ago is doing now”. Much better than the answer you’d get if you’d been a fan of, say, Russell Brand in his stand-up days.
I could show you what he looks like now by sharing one of those beautiful serious songs, which everyone should definitely look up, but I’m instead going to show you his current look (or at least, only a couple of years old) via this video he did at the 2020 BAFTAs, because “I know our job is to hold the mirror up to society, but I’ve been avoiding mirrors of late because it’s got so God Damn ugly” is a really good line. Tumblr won’t let me embed more than five videos in a post, but click on this link to see Tim Minchin looking a bit like Bill Bailey.
Also, it turns out that Rock ‘n’ Roll Nerd has a follow-up now, and it’s really fucking good. So good. Most musical comedians are comedians who can also play music; Tim Minchin is clearly leagues ahead of that. Amazingly talented musician.

BCCI’s Lollipop to the IOC - Turning Cricket into a Global Sport
Cricket, a sport with a staggering fan base of 2.5 billion people worldwide (According to Sport Pledge) is making significant strides towards Olympic inclusion. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been actively pushing for cricket's inclusion in the Olympic Games, with the ambition to debut at the LA28 Games. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), led by Jay Shah, has played a pivotal role in this endeavor. The Sportwiz explores the journey of cricket towards becoming a global sport, driven by the aspirations of the ICC and the strategic efforts of the BCCI.
source - IOC
Cricket has been making notable appearances in various multi-sport events, such as the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 and the Asian Games in 2010, 2014, and the upcoming 2023 edition in Hangzhou, Even this years African Games hosted in Ghana will consist of cricket where it will be played in the T20 format. These inclusions highlight the growing recognition and acceptance of cricket as a global sport.
source - ICC
The question arises: Does the Olympics need cricket, or does cricket need the Olympics? Cricket's immense popularity, with a fan base of 2.5 billion people and its status as the second most-watched sport globally, demonstrates the sport's strength and appeal. However, Olympic inclusion would provide an unparalleled platform for cricket to reach new audiences and further boost its global recognition.
source - business today
The ICC's bid for Olympic inclusion emphasized the massive viewership cricket attracts. The 2022 T20 World Cup garnered a staggering 1.2 billion unique viewers globally. Additionally, the 2020 Women's World Cup saw 89 million viewers tuning in, showcasing the increasing popularity of women's cricket. These statistics exemplify cricket's potential as a major draw for broadcasters, sponsors, and fans alike.
India's significance as a cricket powerhouse cannot be overlooked. The country accounts for a substantial portion of cricket's global viewership, with 76% of the 113.5 million viewing hours recorded during major tournaments coming from India. The BCCI, backed by India's massive cricket market, has offered the International Olympic Committee (IOC) a chance to tap into this unique viewership, potentially elevating the Olympic Games' viewership in the Indian subcontinent.
source - InsideSport.in
The BCCI's main revenue stream, broadcasting rights, presents a compelling proposition for the IOC. Currently held by JIO and Viacom 18 for $31 million, these rights contribute to the ongoing profits of the Olympics. If cricket is included in the Olympics, the ICC estimates potential revenue of $130-260 million. These figures highlight the financial gains that could be achieved through cricket's Olympic participation.
The number $31 million USD is larger than the previous years in terms of Olympics in India but if we compare it to a similar number showcasing the money that’s involved in cricket, in the next financial cycle of the BCCI the Pakistan Cricket board ( PCB ) who hold a share of 5.75% is approximately valued at $34.5 million USD.
PCB Chairperson Mr Najam Sethi
source - The Express Tribune
Cricket's economic value has witnessed a remarkable surge, as evidenced by the 300% increase in media rights value for ICC and IPL. The media rights for ICC and IPL soared from ₹16,347 crores to a staggering ₹48,390 crores. This exponential growth further solidifies cricket's position as a lucrative sporting asset.
source - Sportskeeda
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) now ranked as the second most valued sporting league globally, cricket's future looks promising. The IPL's substantial viewership of 380 million domestic TV viewers in the 2021 season and cumulative viewership of 383 billion minutes for the 2020 campaign across TV and digital platforms indicate cricket's enormous potential according to Jay Shah. As cricket continues to captivate audiences, its inclusion in the Olympics could propel the sport to new heights.
The bid to include cricket in the Olympics is anticipated to be decided in the final session of the IOC, scheduled to take place in Mumbai in October. Brisbane 2032 Olympics presents a realistic opportunity for cricket's inclusion, given Australia's cricketing heritage. Surprisingly, Los Angeles may also be a potential host, thanks to the approval of the bid by former Mayor Eric Garcetti, now the US Ambassador to India, fostering stronger relations between India and the USA.

Cricket's journey towards becoming a global sport is gaining momentum, with the ICC and BCCI leading the way. The sport's immense viewership, economic value, and potential for growth make it an attractive addition to the Olympic Games. As the IOC contemplates cricket's inclusion, the world awaits a decision that could redefine the sport and pave the way for a future where cricket becomes truly global.

alright all the irl people who know anything about this actually LIKE the man so this is the only place i can say it, but
harry styles gets on my nerves. the REASON he gets on my nerves is that he gives off the vibe of like—he’s like the human embodiment of being gay but not queer. i don’t think he’s even gay (he may be, he may not, i don’t even really care) but that’s what it feels like to me. it’s like the essence of the thing people are upset about, with pride being commercialized and becoming hollow and meaningless.
oh! i know. seeing harry styles speak (or sing. or apparently do some fashion icon thing) and people get excited about it, is like watching other queer gay people go up to the amazon booth at the pride festival excited for free swag and thinking its cool that amazon is here. that’s what its like.

“Because the unavoidable truth here is that the system is already rigged. And its rigged in a way that has allowed a party without popular support to drastically reshape an entire branch of government for the foreseeable future by appealing almost exclusively to white voters in some of the least populous regions in the country. That is not a mandate, and its not democracy. It’s a fucking travesty!
“We are at the end of a generational battle, and the heartbreaking thing is, we lost.
“And that hurts. It’s going to hurt for a long time, for a lot of people, in ways that could take a while to fully comprehend. But the next battle has to start right now; and it will be long—we didn’t get here overnight, and we won’t get out of here overnight. But we must be willing to fight tirelessly and with every tool and tactic at our disposal.”

to be honest i feel like both AOS canon and aos fandom don’t treat the vulcan genocide in the first movie with enough gravity. like. 80-90% of the time people don’t even call it what it is, let alone focus on what the effects would be on the remaining vulcans. we actually spend way more time talking about tarsus iv as a fandom than nero’s destruction of vulcan. and the more I write for AOS the more that wigs me out a bit.
the WHOLE PLANET is GONE. SIX BILLION PEOPLE were MURDERED in a matter of HOURS. it’s mass death on the largest scale in what I assume is recorded federation history. we could uh. dwell on that. a bit more. there’s probably something there worth talking about.

Sports Quota Recruitment 2024 | Everything You Need to Know About
As the year 2024 approaches, sports enthusiasts, athletes, and job seekers alike are turning their attention to one of the most popular recruitment processes in India-Sports Quota Recruitment 2024. This system provides an opportunity for athletes to secure government jobs, allowing them to combine their passion for sports with career growth. But how exactly does it work? What are the requirements? And how can you take advantage of sports quota recruitment 2024. What is Sports Quota Recruitment?
Sports Quota Recruitment is a program introduced by various government departments, public sector units, and public sector banks in India. Under this program, eligible athletes-who have excelled in recognized sports-are recruited into various government jobs. The aim of the sports quota recruitment 2024 initiative is to encourage sports in the country while also offering job opportunities to athletes who might struggle to find employment due to their demanding training schedules.
Typically, sports quota recruitment 2024 takes place in sectors like Indian Railways, banks, government ministries, public sector enterprises, and other governmental organizations that have identified vacancies under this quota.
Eligibility for Sports Quota Recruitment 2024
To participate in sports quota recruitment 2024, athletes must meet specific eligibility criteria. These criteria can vary slightly depending on the recruiting organization, but in general, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
Sports Achievements: Candidates must have a proven track record in sports at a national or international level. This may include participation in national championships, international tournaments, Asian Games, or the Commonwealth Games. Each recruiting body may have specific categories of sports for which the quota applies.
Age Limit: The age limit for sports quota recruitment 2024 typically varies between 18 and 25 years, depending on the level of the competition and the role being offered. Some posts may have an age relaxation for SC/ST or OBC candidates.
Educational Qualification: The educational requirements for sports quota recruitment 2024 generally follow the norms of the recruiting body. For example, for roles in Indian Railways or banks, the minimum educational qualification is often 10+2 or a graduate degree.
Performance Standards: Candidates must meet certain performance standards to qualify under the sports quota. This could include winning medals in prestigious sports events or achieving a set rank in national or international tournaments.
How to Apply for Sports Quota Recruitment 2024?
Applying for sports quota recruitment 2024 is a straightforward process, but it requires careful attention to detail. Here's how you can apply:

Proof of sports achievements (certificates, medals, rankings).
Educational qualifications (marksheets, degrees).

Fill out the Application Form: Once the notification for sports quota recruitment 2024 is released, fill out the application form online or offline, depending on the recruitment process.
Submit the Application: After filling out the application form, submit it along with the required documents to the specified address or online portal.
Selection Process: The selection process for sports quota recruitment 2024 usually involves an interview and/or a trial based on the sport you specialise in. Some organisations may also have a written test, though sports skills are typically prioritised.
Benefits of Sports Quota Recruitment 2024
The sports quota recruitment 2024 program offers several benefits to eligible athletes: # Employment Opportunities: It provides a chance for athletes to secure stable, government jobs without compromising their athletic career. # Faster Career Growth: Athletes recruited under the sports quota often experience quicker promotions, as their sports achievements are valued by their employers. # Financial Stability: Government jobs come with good pay, pension benefits, and allowances, which provide financial security to athletes who may otherwise struggle with income instability. # Recognition and Support: Through sports quota recruitment 2024, athletes receive recognition for their hard work and achievements, motivating them to continue excelling in their sports careers. # Time for Training: Government jobs under the sports quota are designed to provide athletes with flexible working hours, allowing them time to train and participate in competitions.
How is Sports Quota Recruitment Beneficial for India?
Sports quota recruitment 2024 not only helps athletes but also contributes to the overall development of sports in India. By providing job opportunities to top athletes, this initiative serves several important purposes:
Improving India’s Sports Ecosystem: The more athletes who have the resources and stability to focus on their sport, the higher the chances of success in international competitions. Athletes who don’t have to worry about finding a stable income can dedicate more time and energy to their sport.
Encouraging Young Athletes: The sports quota recruitment 2024 also inspires younger athletes to pursue their passion for sports. The opportunity to secure a government job through sports encourages many aspiring athletes to train harder and compete at higher levels.
Building a Healthier Nation: Encouraging sports and physical activity through initiatives like sports quota recruitment 2024 helps in building a fitter, healthier society, which is crucial for the overall well-being of the population.
Top Government Organizations Offering Sports Quota Recruitment 2024
Several government and public sector organisations offer sports quota recruitment 2024 opportunities. Some of the major ones include:
Indian Railways: Indian Railways recruits athletes under the sports quota for various roles like clerks, ticket collectors, and sports assistants.
State Police Departments: Many state police departments offer sports quota recruitment for positions like constables and sub-inspectors.
Public Sector Banks: Banks like SBI, Bank of Baroda, and others occasionally release notifications for sports quota recruitment 2024, offering jobs to athletes in clerical and officer positions.
Air India: Air India often hires athletes for various roles, including ground staff, through their sports quota recruitment program.
Other Government Ministries: Several ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Railways, and others, also provide opportunities for recruitment under the sports quota.
Tips for Success in Sports Quota Recruitment 2024
Stay Active in Your Sport: It’s essential to remain competitive and active in your chosen sport. Keep participating in tournaments, and strive to achieve higher rankings, as this will increase your chances of getting recruited through sports quota recruitment 2024.
Focus on Documentation: Ensure all your achievements are well-documented and supported by valid certificates. This includes attending national/international tournaments, winning medals, or representing India at higher levels.
Prepare for Trials and Interviews: Some organisations may conduct skill-based trials or interviews for sports quota recruitment 2024. Prepare for these by practising your sport regularly and familiarising yourself with interview formats if applicable.
Meet Educational Requirements: Make sure that you fulfil the educational qualifications required by the organisation you are applying to. You may need a 10+2 or a higher degree, depending on the job profile.
Conclusion
The sports quota recruitment 2024 is a golden opportunity for talented athletes who wish to pursue a career in both sports and government service. By offering government jobs to exceptional athletes, India is not only encouraging sports but also providing financial security and recognition to those who dedicate their lives to achieving excellence in their respective fields. Whether you're a professional athlete or an aspiring one, staying informed about sports quota recruitment 2024 could be the key to unlocking exciting career opportunities while continuing to pursue your passion for sports.

[ad_1] Left: Neeraj Chopra, Right: Jan Zelezny . Source: X You could well call it a coup of sorts. Superstar javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will train with legend Jan Zelezny from 2025. The last few days have seen a flurry of activities on social media, first with Neeraj posting an emotional message for his outgoing coach Klaus Bartonietz. The German was more than a coach to the Indian legend as he guided him through highs than lows. It saw Neeraj win two Olympic medals – gold in Tokyo and silver in Paris 2024. There was a speculation that Neeraj and his coach were parting ways. For all those who have read the athlete’s post, it was emotional and reverential, which defines Neeraj as a person. Klaus is 75, has spent years away from his family and wanted to return to Germany. The video of Neeraj hugging him and playfully joking with him told a story of how the duo had prepared for campaigns not only at the Olympics, but also the Asian Games and important World Athletics events. Most recently, Neeraj had finished second in the WANDA Diamond League finals. Even before Klaus had officially left, Neeraj suggested at a few media interactions in India, he needed to find a new coach who could take him to the next level. Zelezny has won four Olympic medals. Born in erstwhile Czechoslovakia, which later broke into the Czech and Slovak Republics, Zelezny is respected for his medals at the Olympics – one silver and three gold – plus what he achieved with the javelin in the big-ticket World Championships. Sample this, he threw the javelin to a distance of 98.48 metres in 1996. Nobody has gotten near that mark in the last 28 years. Recently, at the Paris Olympics, when Ashraf Nadeem crossed the 90-metre mark more than once, it was seen as phenomenal. Yet, when one compares 92.97 metres for gold from Nadeem with what Zelezny achieved, he is expected to guide the Indian to greater heights. Interestingly, the first press release came from the Czechia athletics association where Zelezny was more than happy to announce he would be working with an athlete (Neeraj) he has admired. Way back, when Neeraj met Zelezny in 2017, he had posted on social media how happy he was to come face to face with someone he had idolised. Neeraj had even mentioned how he had seen videos of Zelezny’s technique and the way he threw the javelin so beautifully. Now, it is like a mutual admiration club, where Zelezny will be hands-on with Neeraj. There is a catch, though, as Zelezny has committed to only two years. For athletics buffs in India, Neeraj can go full tilt at a third Olympic medal in 2028 at the Los Angeles Olympics. Neeraj Chopra with his Silver medal (PC: X) What they do not understand is, Neeraj has battled fitness issues, the latest being a groin injury. He competed with it through the 2024 season. Neeraj is headed to South Africa for an off-season training camp, where the focus will be on strength and conditioning. The big picture will be the 2025 World Championships, to be held in Tokyo from September 13 to 21. Neeraj and Zelezny will have ample time to prepare for it. The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games in the same year in Nagoya will also be important for Neeraj. The way talk has centred around when the Indian can hit the 90-metre mark, Zelezny may well be the best to guide him. As long as Neeraj was with Klaus, the relationship was one of massive respect. For those who had heard Neeraj speaking on his return from Paris, he had hinted, to go to the next level, he would need a new coach. So, Neeraj and the think-tank, comprising the Athletics Federation of India and the Sports Authority of India, had done their homework well. Zelezny coaching Neeraj from 2025 has, surprisingly, upset a few throwers back home in Czechia. There is a speculation that a few like Jakub Valdejch may opt out of the centre where Zelezny will be guiding Neeraj, along with a few more javelin maestros. It is well-known, the ‘throw’ events are very technical in nature.
So, there may be a few Czechia elite javelin throwers who will feel pressure as Neeraj can get better. Despite the Indian superstar winning two Olympic medals, social media has pointed out certain areas where Neeraj can improve, like his follow-through after the javelin is released. Some of them have attached videos and split images to support how Neeraj can get better. For the record, the SAI will foot the coaching bill of Neeraj’s coach, Zelezny.
