Theres a lot of layers of general tragedy to bill amd fords relationship. Theres the obvious one a lof of people have remarked upon in aus and fix it fics- you know ford would have helped bill if bill had just told the truth. Ford clearly thought a lot of him and definitely would have done anything that was asked of him but admitting any amount of non-omnipotence and weakness was not something bill was willing or even capable of doing. He doesnt even tell ford the truth abouy euclydia, he is like. Dancing somewhere in the vicinity of the truth and THAT immediately triggers a meltdown even daring to imply a level of personal culpability through a lie of omission (that conversation happens not very long before the portal experiment, ford remarks bill has been gone foe an unusually long time following, and when bill does come back he is just on the warpath and everything goes to shit as we all know)

The other that i havent seen touched on is the way in which bill cipher was a character who, formerly at least, desired to be understood. He felt ostracized and alone and in a desperate bid to make others understand him he destroyed his entire universe, leaving him entirely alone and as far as im concerned pretty much ruined his life though the character would definitely not view it in that light. Then he meets this guy who feels the same way. Ford is isolated through a mixture of his own pride and a lack of social skills, hes brilliant and places a great deal of importance on that isolation, but in spite of that he hungers for companionship and, of course, for people to finally understand him. and clearly bill becomes quite taken with him. And yet he is still leading ford along like a lamb to slaughter to do the exact same thing he did that ruined literally everything- the portal would absolutely shatter earths reality in a way similar to euclydia. Yeah he clearly has a lot of very intense feelings about ford but those feelings did NOT stop him from wanting ford to accidentally commit omnicide.

The longer I play Obey Me, the more I feel like Obey Me is a story about how the MC, in their quest to seek acceptance by the people they care about, ends up destroying themselves in the process and losing the very thing that made them so special and loved in the first place.

In the beginning of OG, they started off as just a normal human who got whisked away to a weird ass world where literally nobody respects them. Despite this, they recognised from the beginning that these demons and angels were not so different from humans. MC's ability to see the demons as actual people and not just beings controlled by their sins was what allowed them to form close bonds with them. They had good intentions to reunite the demon brothers who had undergone centuries of misunderstanding, resentment, and pent up grief. Even though they were excessively nosy, MC's unique position as a complete outsider allowed them to see just how much love the demon brothers had for each other, and how they can become closer if everybody would just better communicate with each other. Serving as the bridge to better improve the brothers' relationships was what convinced the demon brothers to also see MC as a member of their family.

But as the MC became more involved in the Devildom's problems, they started to adopt the same toxic traits that had created wedges between the brothers in the first place. From relying heavily on their pacts to subdue the brothers, to allowing a curse to control Barbatos (even though they had the ability to break it), to going along with the brothers' manipulative scheme to trick Satan into reconciling with Lucifer when Satan ran away to the human world -- it's almost like MC has unconsciously picked up on some of their loved ones' behaviour. Gone are the days where MC brings in a new perspective to problems. Now, they just embrace the chaos and their more darker traits, for that is what is expected of them to survive in the Devildom. And since everyone within their circle puts them on a pedestal, this further affirms to the MC that this is how they should be.

Dealing with the affairs of the Devildom had also caused the MC to grow more apathetic. In the beginning, they had been actively taking steps to form pacts with the brothers and were generally very invested in freeing Belphie from the attic. They remained true to themselves and insisted that they form a pact with Satan based on mutual trust and understanding, and not just as a means to smite Lucifer. Despite being in a helpless situation, MC never refused to give up their agency. But the longer MC gets involved with these shenanigans, the more they grew... numb to everything.

Solomon bringing me back to the Devildom unannounced? Oh, sure. Diavolo and Solomon hiding the reasons for my sudden return? Not my problem.

Simeon facing a problem to the point of having a quarter of the cast acting as his bodyguards? Eh, I'll just ignore it until I can't anymore.

Watching and waiting. That's what they have resorted to doing.

And that mindset of kicking problems down the line until it lands on MC's doorstep and they have no choice but to act -- that's exactly how they have been acting when they were stuck in NB, hasn't it? MC didn't bother forming pacts with the past version of the brothers until they were given an ultimatum, and even then, they simply relied on the convenient timing of each brother struggling with an inner crisis to swoop in, resolve the situation and tick them off their checklist.

MC in NB seems like an unfortunate culmination of everything they faced so far. They're too apathetic to care about getting sent to an unfamiliar place once again, too desensitised to life in the Devildom to reclaim their agency, and too desperate to earn the love of their former family to even think about anything else. They became so co-dependent to the demon brothers that they seem to think they cannot live without them or their affection, even if the ones they are living with in the past are different people from the ones they grew to love in the present.

The phrase "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" fits way too perfectly for the Obey Me MC. After all, MC keeps getting rewarded every time they try to get themselves killed (or even when they actually got killed). Maybe that's the only way they know how to resolve problems.

So if they can't die as the hero, they'll just learn to live as the villain.

hi! i am not sure if you will have good advice for this but your photography guide made me think about this issue. i grew up quite poor (school supplies were a struggle every september) and now as an adult i am not as financially stable as id like. this has made me very scared to use any art supplies because im always thinking that im wasting them on not good enough projects or not good enough skills or similar thinking. however that leads to me having supplies bc of gifts and whatnot (ie watercolor paper) but not using it out of anxiety. do you have any advice? thanks!

There are two ways that I go about getting over this kind of issue:

Get out the supplies right now and start making any marks. Cut a piece of watercolor paper in half. Draw a line down the center of a page in grease pencil. Do anything to just start using it to get over the "can't open it, must save for special occasions/projects" mindset. Once you've broken the seal on a first use, it's a lot easier to use tools or notebooks or paints a second time.

Plan projects for yourself like they're assignments. Give yourself a deadline and materials list, write it up like a school assignment sheet, and then do the assignment.

And, if it helps to think of it this way: you're likely hesitant to use your materials because you don't want them "going to waste," but at the moment they are being wasted because they aren't being used.

It is solidly my opinion that art supplies used for art are never wasted; not all "art" is meant to be kept and a part of the process of creating art is practice, which should lead to massive piles of clumsily made, "bad" art that you wouldn't want to hang up on the wall but is nonetheless a part of the process of making art that you'd want to hang on the wall.

You may be looking at the watercolor paper and thinking "I shouldn't break into this because each piece of this paper needs to be something special to show that I value this gift" but you don't get better at painting with watercolors if you use them on printer paper. You need to use the paper (and the paints, and your brushes) to maintain and improve your fluency with the medium.

Many people are hesitant to "waste" sketchbooks or good paper or canvas or expensive paint because they think they are throwing away the good things they *could* make if only the had the perfect plan and create the perfect piece of art with each page and each new tube.

But these things are consumables. Your sketchbook is not a guitar, and it is not a finished song, it is a set of strings. The lovely watercolor paper is a gift for you to make art with, but it is also a gift for you to *practice* making art with and the practice is just as much a part of the gift as a finished artwork would be.

So you're not wasting it if you just get out your paper and start painting with no plan, or if you "mess up" a piece, or if you just use the paper for practice.

So, if you're trying to get yourself to use watercolor paper specifically, I have an assignment for you:

Watercolor Thumbnails Assignment

Materials: Watercolor paper, 2 colors of paint (your choice), Hard pencil Tools: Ruler, Small and medium brushes, Palette

Instructions:

Using your pencil and your ruler, divide the page into 10 equal rectangles.

Visit this website and click the "surprise me" button. Select 10 artworks to create monochrome thumbnails of. (you can click as many times as you need to, but the goal here is to do thumbnails of art that you aren't familiar with rather than seeking out art that you know well for this assignment)

Reproduce each of the images as a monochrome thumbnail in the ten rectangles you've marked on your paper. You don't have to mix a unique color for each rectangle, but you should mix a few different colors and use only one for each rectangle. For instance, if you are using green and yellow paint, some images should be yellow, some should be green, some should be green-yellow, some should be yellow-green.

Purpose:

To use your materials

Work on achieving different values with single colors by layering or diluting your paint.

Composition study

Time Limits:

Once you have collected your ten images and have your station set up, you should take no more than one hour to complete your thumbnails.

Hello, lovely Cowboy anon! What a cool idea, and thank you so much for the praise! I’m still new to the whole posting my writing thing, so I’m always a bit nervous as to how people will react 🙂

Warning: the character expresses some opinions about their looks that aren’t actually true; obviously, facial scarring doesn’t make a person scary or bad. This is just the mindset of the character, not the author.

You had a scar. It wasn’t a small one; it split your face in half in a jagged, red line, marring your skin and just barely missing taking out your eye. It felt like the only thing people noticed about you; usually it was the first question anyone asked. Everyone always wanted to know what horrific, sordid tale you had, but the truth was even worse: nothing special had happened. It was a bad injury as a child from an accident, though you couldn’t even remember what had happened, you’d been so young. 

Sometimes it felt like that was worse. If you had some gruesome tale, maybe it would distract from the scar and give you some confidence. Instead, all you had was a face even your parents struggled to look at and a huge physical therapy bill.

When you’d met Paul, you’d finally felt seen, like someone knew you for who you were and not what you looked like. He hadn’t even really asked about the scar, he’d been so focused on staring into your eyes. That’s what drew you to him, initially; he looked into your eyes. No one had done that, not as long as you could remember. 

Paul honestly didn’t really register the scar beyond it being part of your face. It was just another feature that defined you as unique, like your expressive eyes or adorable laugh. He hadn’t even thought about how anyone else would react, let alone how you would feel about it. All he wanted was to introduce you, his imprint and the center of his universe, to his best friends, practically his siblings. 

When you expressed concern about what the others would think, Paul assured you they would never do anything to hurt you. In fact, he told you, Sam’s girlfriend Emily had a similar scar, so everyone was used to being polite.

He was wrong.

The first thing Sam said when the two of you walked in was a snarled “Paul, what did you do?!”. He practically leapt across the room, dragging him bodily out the door as he struggled not to shift. The two stood on the far side of the yard, clearly arguing, Paul struggling not to shift. You weren’t sure what had upset Sam, but you knew it had to be serious for the, as Paul had described, normally calm man to be so angry.

The next thing that happened was Jared walking in, muffin hanging from his hand, as he exclaimed “holy shit! What the hell did Paul do to you?”. Then, it hit you. They were talking about your scar. For once, you hadn’t even thought to wonder what they would think about you, Paul’s confidence at their presumed lack of care had rubbed off on you. You realized Sam was convinced Paul had hurt you, had shifted and created the large, hideous crater across your face. All along, he had been wrong; the scar was all anyone would ever see. You couldn’t even meet Paul’s friends without someone thinking you’d had some horrific incident, forever injured by your imprint’s wild temper. 

You opened your mouth to defend Paul, only to slam it shut as your eyes filled with tears, damaged tear duct stinging at the salt. Your face fell, mouth wavering as you tried not to cry, and you flew out the door and down the yard. You raced to the car and hopped in, slamming the door shut and quickly backing out. 

The drive back was quiet and solemn, all alone for the first time in weeks, and you had to stop multiple times just to cry. You should’ve known better than to get your hopes up. By the time you reached your house, you had no tears left to cry. All you wanted was to bury your head in blankets and never come up for air, maybe save the world the sight of your face.

Once you entered your bedroom, you spotted Paul, shirtless, by the window. He radiated warmth into the now cold, dark room, looking sheepish.

“Hey. I’m sorry about what the guys said, Emily’s gonna talk to them and make them apologize. They didn’t mean to scare you off by talking about your scar…” He said, rubbing his arm in thought.

“I-I just thought that, maybe, someone would look at me for me, not my scar! It’s all I wanted, all I ever want, and you’re the only one that sees me! Am I going to be stuck this way forever?!” You vented, hands reaching up to clutch at your forehead in frustration.

“No, no! I promise, the boys will love you; it was just a surprise, is all. Please, just give them another chance,” he pleaded stepping closer.

“And you aren’t hideous. I love your face, scar and all. It’s part of what makes you who you are.” he continued, bringing you into a tight hug and burying your head in his warm shoulder. “If you want, I can beat them up for you, maybe give them a scar and see how they feel?” He joked, smiling at the soft, hiccuping laugh that rang through you. You sighed, further melting into his chest. 

“Hey, how about we cuddle? I can feel your goosebumps,” he teased, dragging you to the bed as you sighed. Laying down, he gripped your leg and threw it over his hip, wrapping his arms around you and rubbing your back. He pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead and traced your scar, whisper-soft. “I love you, okay? Don’t ever forget that.” He sighed, putting his chin to your forehead. You hummed, burrowing in deep, already drifting off. Maybe you would ask him to make the pack train extra hard as compensation.

I definitely think that this moment is all of the little moments where Isagi zeroed in on just defeating one person and trying to become the best piling up to his ego becoming pure hubris. Like before it was just Isagi slowly becoming more and more like a machine who works towards a goal, but I fear he has fully embraced his role as an analyzer of the field, to the point where he's abandoning the thing that really made him standout as an analyst to begin with:

His empathy. I read a post a while ago from someone who talked about how it's actually because Isagi is so empathetic that he's able to read so much about his opponents. And I really agree with that, because Isagi Yoichi is the most empathetic person the field. Or at least he used to be before he became enamored with making goals and scoring. Then he only cared about trying to score because he brought into the Blue Lock philosophy hook, line, and sinker.

I think this moment is a result of Isagi abandoning the things that he felt were holding him back from becoming a "genius" like the others, and that thing was literally his ability to understand another person by thinking about what it must be like to be them, essentially. He's only thinking about how they can fulfill their actions on the field, and not why and that was a huge core of early Isagi's mindset. Thinking about others isn't a selfish act, and is the least egotistical thing you can do. But it's what got Isagi ahead for the most part, and a key part about being an egoist isn't getting rid of the parts that make you unique, it's turning those things about you into weapons for you to use to your advantage.

It's a little ironic that he'd turn to Kaiser in the end for help defeating the "neo egoist league" all together, because Kaiser JUST learned the whole "I need to be more empathetic and caring of others to truly learn the value of myself" lesson, he had this whole inner monologue where he truly realized that using other people like cogs in a machine wasn't what made him a great striker. Or even a great player, and that his detachment to other people was the thing that was secretly holding him back, not the other way around.

And here is Isagi, becoming just like Kaiser, abandoning the thing that made him special as a striker for what he thinks he "needs" and not what is actually beneficial to him.

In a weird way, its almost like Kaiser and Isagi have swapped places. Isagi is the unfeeling antagonist who wants to use this all feeling "side character" to get ahead, and I think he's going to fail because he doesn't realize that he's falling behind in the wrong places. Early Isagi from before this arc would have whole moments where he'd talk to his teammates and even learn about how they think specifically, and even their past achievements, the things weighing them down etc.

But this Isagi has not once done that, and that's what has led us here. To an Isagi who is wholly addicted to the feeling of making goals that he has forgotten to consider the other part of what makes a striker great.

A part of me is still also thinking about Bachira in all this, and how we haven't seen in literally a year at this point. And I am wondering if when we do see them, it will be like two sides of the same coin (because if I remember correctly Bachira's team hasn't won a single game for some reason, even though Bachira's scored the most)

I can definitely see Isagi becoming full on "Logos" in his ideas, while Bachira is completely "Pathos" and is honing too much in on his creativity and not enough on how to make that translate into a victory. (i also just miss bachira in the story </3)

Matt's faith in the show is really important and well explored; one of the first scenes of the show is Matt going to confession (or, well, talking to his priest since he's not really confessing at that point). Matt struggles a lot with what he's supposed to do; everyone's telling him to kill the villain and he kinda wants to, but he literally says: "I know my soul is damned if I take his life". He struggles with his faith and goes with his doubts to his priest, and it's beautiful—also when he finally gets a costume for his vigilanteing he chooses to dress as the devil, lol. (His priest tells him that nothing makes people run to Church faster than the feeling of having the devil on their heels.)

a lot of the show is about how he justifies his vigilante actions with his faith, and whether he's doing the right thing in trying to help people or just using it as an outlet for his anger. the literal first scene of the show has him in a confession booth talking to his priest (who is a really interesting character too). this is not the scene I was talking about but it's such an excellent scene with matt talking to his priest: https://youtu.be/XHZ3NbEIDdw

honestly i dont wanna type too much but i feel that matt is a great example of someone who battles with his faith because he rarely loses his faith but rather fights with why he was made the way he was and put through what he was. He believes himself to have the devil inside him but believes that God put him there

ok in the comics barring the most current run matt has Mostly been a non-practicing Catholic that very rarely actually does any catholic Activities but ends up falling back into the Mindset and very occasionally dramatically taking confession (ex. in that one issue where he takes confession, basically tells the father that he is uniquely terrible and is thinking about violently murdering someone and when the father says "you can be forgiven" hes like "AUGFH-- NO!!!!!!!!!!" and runs out) when he's gone through some shit. and i love that its so relatable

This guy so catholic he spends an ungodly amount of time just chilling in the church. And goes there whenever there is a moral conundrum about killing people being Bad even though it would solve a lot of problems and stop said people from killing other people. This happens every other episode. Matt is the Catholic Guilt Guy. There's actually a lot of catholic stuff in the show as a whole. Just a compilation would be like three whole episodes long.

Hes great hes catholic enough to not outrught murder people but not catholic enough to not fuck before marriage hes a bisexual disaster at all times hes besties with a priest might i add hes great hes my special little guy

his catholicism is a huge piece of his characterisation he was raised by nuns in a catholic orphanage, the first scene we ever see him (as an adult and not a flashback) is him going to confession, he is good friend with his priest and has regular debates with him, etc also in s3 he has a huge crisis of faith after he lost A Lot where he stops believing for a while and it's linked to his identity crisis where he actually wants to kill another person (a hard line he previously chose never to cross) and wants to be only daredevil and not matt murdock, when he is both and needs both to exist also when he was a kid his grandmother used to say "watch out for the murdock boys, they've got the devil in them" and it created a surprising lot of his issues

So he's both catholic in the comics and the show but he's More Catholic in the show. Like, raised in a catholic orphanage by nuns (ONE OF WHICH IS HIS *MOTHER*), second scene in the show has him in a confession box kind. Matt Murdock goes out and gets the shit beaten out of him nightly and also beats the shit out of other people and purposefully leaned into devil iconography as his theme. When his nurse friend says, he takes a lot of punishment without one complaint he says "That part's the Catholicism." It is a Core Aspect of his character (at least in the show). He makes me insane. Also the same chemicals that blinded him created the teenage mutant ninja turtles and everyone should know that.

They went to confession to a priest who they had saved as their costumed counterpart and the guy recognized them by the voice, proving that it's possible and everyone else is just dumb

he takes "i wanna fight god" to new and incredibly violent levels, while also being a sweetheart and a goofball

Actually strictly WILL NOT kill criminals. Goes wayyy out of his way to avoid it. Fights with the Punisher about it. Goes to confession booth after nightly vigilante excursions. Feels so much guilt. "How have you been holding up?" "Like a good Caltholic boy" "that bad huh" - actual conversation with his priest

So Daredevil struggles with his mission as a crime fighter because killing criminals goes against his faith. He makes it a point to not kill criminals, believing that even bad people deserve a second chance. This philosophy puts him at odds against The Punisher, who is a relentless killer. As a Catholic myself, while I love the concept of a morally conflicted superhero, I think the worldbuilding around Daredevil is lacking. If he struggles with violence and killing, why doesn't he pray to warrior saints like Saint Michael, Saint Ignatius of Loyola (a former knight), or Saint Joan of Arc? Why isn't there a community of other Catholics he can turn to for guidance, considering New York City has a sizeable population of Catholics? And why are the churches he goes to always empty? Doesn't he know that the Catholic Church supports the just war theory? I think that would have made his burden more bearable.

He goes to church and confesses to punching people and says "imma do it again can i apologize in advance" and the father dude says "no you're meant to stop now" and Matt says "no" and they do this everyday. I'm not remembering it properly but this is a canon interaction i swear

i love him for having the funniest version of a trope i usually hate (person gets into confession booth and asks forgiveness not for what they've done, but for what they're about to do). usually this trope just looks silly to me bc like. the priest would just say "i can't do that" and you would have to either awkwardly explain yourself or just Leave. it's funny when matt does it because fr. lantom is probably like "what are you gonna do???" and matt's like "lol. lmao. 😊 hehehe." anyway we love this angry catholic man who dresses up like the devil to beat people up in hell's kitchen

I'm pretty sure you've already got plenty of submissions for her so I'll just say she was raised in what is basically a cult (technically a nunnery but let's be real) dedicated to keeping the body of the thing that will kill God behind the rock. One of their prayers is actually "I pray the rock is never rolled away". Harrow is extremely devout as penance for her earlier heretical actions in the tomb as a child (spoiler!) so the Catholic guilt really comes through

imagine being a catholic nun and you meet god, but it turns out he’s a twitch streamer from new zealand who became god because everything got a little bit out of hand. and just before you met him you gave yourself a diy grief-fuelled lobotomy with the help of your best frenemy. imagine how insane you’d be. now multiply that insanity by nine. that’s the fictional love of my life right there.

They're Catholicism with extra bones. Everyone is a nun. They have what is basically a rosary made from knuckle bones. They technically worship the same God as everyone else, but they're waaaay more focused on The Body in the Tomb (Mary) and we get a moment where we find out that while everyone else prays the equivilent of The Lords Prayer, they're doing the equivilent of Hail Mary. And they paint their faces with skulls.

She thinks leaving dry bread in a drawer is taking care of someone. She's in love with a 10,000 year old corpse (the same one they worship). She spent ALL NIGHT digging with her bare hands to make sure a field had bones every 5 feet so she could fight her girlfriend - I mean, greatest enemy. Spoiler territory: She's been puppeting her parents corpses since she was 8 years old. Instead of grieving her dead girlfriend, she gives herself a lobotomy. She makes soup with bone in it so she can use the bone IN THEIR STOMACH to try and kill them.

But seeing this from the extra chapter once again from the manga reminds me of how Yotsuba Nakano would fit in easily at the Blue Lock universe.

Her backstory and the way she suppresses a lot of things from herself is a good recipe to put her in a program that promotes individuality and egoism.

In her arc, she is mostly shown to be wanting to be unique from her sisters and how she was the most competitive among them even before she met Fuutarou. When her mother was still alive, it didn't have a good reception on her as she was most likely wants to have the five sisters to stick closely to each other and whatnot.

Her character revolves around to being told to step behind the line which has mostly contributed to her being mostly in the background compared to her other sisters who are shining in their own. While not the most saddest backstory I've seen, it's still one of the most tragic because it shows on how much a person like her wants to be different and be the best among the rest. If we're going to delve and understand her way of thinking and the guilt that surrounded her, it's moreso in the lines of, "Why even bother trying if you're surrounded by people who are going to tell you to stop?"

Hence, in just a realization came to me that if ever there will be a Blue Lock program in her world or if there will be a crossover thing between these two franchises, it's most likely Yotsuba who will participate in the program not just because she was the most sports talented sister out of the five siblings but because she was naturally a competitive and invidualistic person with a suppressed ego that needs to be awakened.

Her character is one of the most intriguing and interesting one because of how much that guilt became a massive burden to her to the point that she was hiding in a veneer of being a cheerful, airhead and a person who can't say "no" most of the time.

Because of her massive guilt when she was a kid, it translated to her suppressing her natural characteristics of being competitive and assertive and tried to accommodate the others regardless if this will hurt her feelings or not.

It doesn't matter to her if this will hurt her in the end because in her entire life she had always thought that she's not allowed to become special and not to be prioritized.

Which reminds me of how Yotsuba's conflict in character reminds me of Isagi during the first season of the franchise.

Of how they're both weak and how they weren't able to put boundaries with other people and say "no" to them directly.

Isagi's goal is to become the number one striker but because of the mentality "one for all and all for one" which was ingrained to them as a team throughout his life, he felt guilty for thinking selfishly for once and instead passed the ball to his teammate when in reality it doesn't have a high likely chance that he will score a goal which contributed to their loss.

In a certain parallelism with Yotsuba's character, she had always wanted to be unique and be the best among her sisters as seen on how she was going to great lengths and putting an effort and being competitive to what she does. She didn't want to become a replaceable individual especially if she was mistaken to be one of her other sisters so easily. But since her efforts were being unnoticed and wasn't deem important by the people surrounded her and that incident about the "school transferring" before the plot had begun in the manga, it had contributed to her deeming herself as unimportant and always prioritizing other people rather her own happiness and satisfaction.

It'll be intriguing if her character was to be put in a program that supported her earlier mindset of the pre-Yotsuba and flourish her natural assertiveness and competitiveness in her character.

And wouldn't it be interesting to see how her efforts will be rewarded until the end if that's the case?

Create a crossover! What is Devil May Cry crossing over with? How does it work? How do the characters from each world interact with the characters from the other?

Look, ya'll see my username, u know I'm gonna go with Pokémon.

specifically I'm thinking about pokemon naturally existing within the human realm, and demons are almost entirely separate from them. So all of the human characters have pokemon partners, with some exceptions.

All of the Spardas have a pseudo-legendary, and Dante specifically has Tyranitar. I wanted this line specifically because this species is known for causing a lot of damage, but have also been shown to be very sweet and protective if need be. It really fits Dante's 'don't come near me, I'm dangerous' mindset until Patty climbs all over it and it utterly adores her. It's also a hugger, so much so that Dante actively lets himself get poked to Hell because it looks sad.

As for Vergil, I'm going with the Salamence line. It's a very interesting line, having a goal-driven lizard eventually achieve that goal in the final stage. Vergil would have a hard time working with his partner, especially in 3 (where it would be a Bagon), because demons don't have pokemon partners. He leaves Bagon with Dante when he falls into Hell, thinking that the pokemon would not be able to survive there. It would stay with Dante for decades after that, until finally reuniting with Vergil as a Shelgon in DMC 5. It would take a bit, but it would eventually evolve after the boys got back from hell. Dante will forever lord the fact that his partner fully evolved before Vergil's (until Salamence smacks him with a Dragon Claw. Vergil approved.)

Nero would definitely have the Dragapult line! A dragon type (like Salamence) that has a large focus on family in its design whist also being completely unique from most other pseudos? Yeah, it's chock full of Nero vibes. The Dragapult evolution definitely only happened at the end of DMC 5, becuase the image of a Dragapult and DT Nero fighting with Silver Bullet in the bg is so fuckin sick. Also he was a Dreepy during DMC 4 and u need to know that he loved to sit on Nero's head or in his hoodie.

Patty next because propaganda. This one's up for grabs, but I think her first partner was a Dratini! Specifically one that kept showing up in the DMC office until Dante shoved it into Patty's arms. She's a Dragonair now, and often flies around the office just to annoy Dante. Also, shoutout to Patty for being the only human to get a pseudo because she's Dante's kid.

Trish didn't have a partner at first, since she was a demon. After going off on her own for a while, she ran into a Wattrel that kept using her motorcycle's wind to glide in the air. She found the little thing tenacious, and now there's a Kilowattrel half the size of Lady that perches in the DMC office rafters. It's high speed nature complements her fighting style rather well, along with the electricity.

Lady's partner is an extremely violent Scolipede. She really big and very venomous, so most regular people steer clear of her. She is also very tsundere, but actually doesn't mind when Dante or Trish are around. Lady takes great care of her, and often rides her in during jobs. Most people would tell you that's a horrible idea, but DMC employees are not normal people. Also Vergil was shot by one of her needles in DMC 3 when she was a Venipede, and now they are locked in a bitter rivalry. Lady thinks this is hilarious.

Nico is very happy with her Riolu partner, even if it was a gift from her dad when it was an egg. She doted on it very often, and even forced Rock to help her make a special egg warmer. When it did hatch, it quickly shared her interest in the art of metalworking and gunsmithing. Nowadays, he's Nico's assistant. He hasn't evolved yet, but Nico doesn't mind. He will when he's ready.

Kyrie's partner is a Sylveon, and a very caring one at that. Loves the kids, Kyrie, and Nero. Was an Eevee during DMC 4, and refused to leave Nero's side after Kyrie was kidnapped. Because of that, she is actually incredibly strong, so much so that Salamence was immediate put on edge when they met.

Some quick ones! Eva gave Sparda a Dieno when they met, and it was a very affectionate Hydregion during the boys' youth. Eva herself had a Alolan Ninetales, who was very protective of the boys and the baby pseudos. Both of these Pokemon are actually still alive in a rehabilitation center, although the boys don't know that rn. Morrison has an old Stoutland who can surprisingly handle battle quite well. Nina's partner is a very majestic and battle worn Kingdra, who is currently enjoying retirement. V did not have any pokemon, but he does talk about one he regrets leaving behind in the past....

And... that all their main partners! They actually have other pokemon as well, but these were just their first ones. As an example, Dante also has a Houndoom that he befriended in DMC 3 (as a Houndour) that knows a lot of bite moves. Why? King Cerberus rep for the mutual Coverage. Elemental coverage.

Finding Identity in Purity is a Mistake.

One of the things I've really had to challenge myself on, as somebody who has been pagan for 15 years now, is how insular and venomous some pagan spaces used to be online compared to how they are now, and how much the culture shaped me. At one point I was a member of a very popular Ásatrú (Heathenry as a term really hadn't caught on at the time and the term wasn't as loaded then) group, with maybe five thousand members. I was a teenager, and like most teenagers, I wanted to be accepted. Badly. And this was The Group. It had big, important community members in it. The culture was aggressively reconstructionist. There were Rules, both written and unwritten, and if you followed them you got to dogpile people who didn't. It was incredibly toxic.

This group was very proud of its "Shame Culture." That's not me trying to coin a term to badmouth them, that's literally what they called it. If you stuck out, you were Shamed. There were frequent threads dedicated to mocking members who were bullied out of the group. If you were out of line with the group Opinion, you'd be dogpiled until you lost your cool, and then banned for being angry.

As you can imagine, after a while I quietly left, but that group left its mark. I was out of the community, but I still struggled with its demand of absolute historical purity. Even more so when many of the group's Approved Beliefs began being contested by new research and being less popular. Suddenly well defined pantheons were no longer the law of the land and verboten deities (It's Loki, I'm talking about Loki) were acceptable, and somehow at 20 I felt like an old man yelling at clouds. Those things couldn't be right. Blót meant blood and Loki was made up and there was a perfect historical recreation of Real, Authentic Heathenry that was just waiting to blossom, after all the fake heathens and Wiccatru crazies (labels that were, upon reflection, aimed by group members almost exclusively at women and LGBT+ people) were chased out or shamed into submission. This is not a healthy mindset.

I hope it is obvious that I have not retained these beliefs. I regret ever giving them credence. It's a shame that I fell for them, but I am also not surprised that I did. They prey exactly upon the worst excesses of the feelings that can draw young people (especially young men, I'd say) to paganism in the first place- this idea of a unique, rugged, authentic spirituality hidden behind misinformation that only the brave and intelligent care enough to find. I was an angry, socially isolated young nerd, and that's exactly the thing that angry, socially isolated young nerds desperately want to hear: "Not only are you special, you're special on a cosmic level. You're one of the only guys who worship the True Gods in the Right Way."

I feel like moving towards Slavic Paganism helped me break away from that toxic mindset. First, in that it allowed me to be a beginner again as an adult. No expertise, no seniority, I had to sit down and listen. Second, in what I heard when I did: "We don't know." That was terrifying to hear when I started. What if I did something wrong? What if I messed up? Tearing the bandage off and realizing that those things mattered less than I had believed allowed me to grow.

Third, and probably silliest, was that it's called Slavic Paganism. I know, it's got other names, but those are, uh, complicated. But that second word was important. "Heathenry" lets you be separate. You're not a nut like those eclectic Pagans, you're a real Heathen. You tell somebody in America you're a Rodnover (or whatever other label you might choose) and they ask you what that means, and you mumble back "pagan" as quiet as you can. You have an identity beyond that, but you're not better because of it.

Don't fall for the grift that young me did. Wanting historical authenticity is perfectly fine. I still try and make my practice as historically accurate as I can, and people peddling outright lies as divine truth are still causing harm. But basing your identity on Purity is another story. Don't chase Purity, because you'll never catch it. It's a bald faced lie. The chase is long and fruitless and you hurt people as you pass. If you become obsessed with Purity, it'll eat you from the inside out and turn you cruel. Purity is the white whale of reconstructionist paganism, and it'll drag us all under if we let it.

H6 is objectively a pretty bad movie, but I can't help loving it for how fun it is, and for how Michael is so obviously angry the entire time. Man is just pissed the hell off lmao. He almost breaks out running at one point. He explodes a dude's head and crushes another's. Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle is so much more enjoyable than Anthony Michael Hall in Halloween Kills. Loomis is kinda cool. And the last twenty minutes or so just frickin rocks.

oh man I could talk for… some time about HKills/Ends and my thoughts on them lmao. I enjoyed them as a movie, enjoyed the experience, came out of the cinema and enjoyed them, but I think as I processed them it hit me just how badly they (personally) fit into Halloween for me.

I loved Halloween 2018 - I felt that, considering it was still a revival/reboot of a franchise that’s already been milked drier than a geriatric cow, it was well-paced, engaging, the plot was thoughtful and everything about it was fun. we had a return to Michael being a careless killer (and weirdly playful - putting sheets over things, messing about like he did in the OG ‘78 film) and we also had what I think is a really interesting idea between him and Laurie. I do like Halloween 2 and I think the idea of them being siblings is fun but personally the idea of them being entirely unrelated makes it so much scarier. she was just in the wrong place, wrong time during H78 and was the unluckiest person there to receive the full brunt of Michael’s attention.

in 2018 it shows just how much this got to her - and the film looks at the idea people had of Michael targeting her because she was special, or a sister, or anything - and makes fun of it. or at least that’s how I interpret it. Laurie is convinced that Michael wants her for some reason, and in 2018 she makes it her life goal to prep for his return, to prep her child and her house for him, she lives on full fear. and yet when he breaks out… (and it wasn’t even out of his own volition but rather someone broke him out on purpose)?

he doesn’t go for her at all. he takes his anger (if you’d like to go that route) out on Haddonfield in general, and Laurie is still so convinced that it’s about her that she puts herself directly into his line of sight and that’s when he starts attacking her again. it’s a really interesting idea I think, and this, plus the way 2018 returns to Michael as some unknowable and entirely undefined character - is he thoughtless, thoughtful, evil, mindless, supernatural, human - these ideas get thrown out of the window again when HKills and Ends roll around.

again I’m not saying people shouldn’t enjoy them. it’s half 1 in the morning and I’m rambling about my personal thoughts on the matter, and I did think they were fun films. I just wish that energy and concept got put into making a unique horror film for once and not continually revisiting H78 because I didn’t think it really fit in with what Halloween was about. but to get to what my point is here - I agree with the Paul Rudd/Anthony Michael Hall thing. I do think Kills was interesting because you could compare the trauma Laurie went through to the trauma Tommy went through but the film decided to make her look like some badass recluse, and to make him look like a mindless asshole. without any real point to it. I think Tommy did a lot better with receiving an aged-up adaption that was around Rudd’s age in H6, because it puts him in contrast as the child to Laurie’s teen babysitter. but anyway

also also but re: ‘Laurie thinks she’s special and Michael doesn’t even know who she is’ - whether you loved, hated, or entirely ignored Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022, I think it did a funny job of (imo) making fun of Laurie for this mindset she has. Sally is pretty clearly a copy of Laurie in that she’s grown up as a badass old lady who’s ready to face her young trauma and yet, when she’s directly face to face with Leatherface, he just ignores her and fucks off entirely. which is exactly how H2018 treated the connection between Laurie and Michael. non-existent on Michael’s side beyond a random game on a random victim, and only formed in any real way through Laurie’s trauma and fear. gonna say imo again but if the Halloween 2018 trilogy series really wanted to focus on trauma, and the ghost of trauma, and Michael as a ‘ghost’ manifestation of this… that would’ve been a much better route than making Michael fool around with some dude in the sewers. anyway

i've been reluctant to holly-theorise because it feels like a mystery and i really want to be surprised when i watch s5. but so far i feel like theyve hinted that 'mike is the key' (hop said in s3) so getting to holly could hurt mike, and in turn hurt will, or perhaps mike himself is important too (people dont like this cos they think it means stealing will's storyline, when.. its not a competition).

or it could be about getting to karen, seeing as groundwork was laid in the play that they could revisit, karen went to school w henry as well as joyce and hopper. so henry is getting their kids in revenge for something?

i like the seeds sown for her so far though. joyce asks 'did you see something?' and she says yes in holly jolly episode where the lights blink. maybe she saw something she shouldnt have?

or, thematically... kids often see the truth of things where adults don't... i wonder if there's something henry wants that disappears during puberty or adulthood. eternal life? something about the innocence of children and sexual awakening, freezing time in the UD, wanting will as a child, working amongst lab kids who are developmentally delayed. if so, it's giving philip pullman's northern lights series (about sexual awakening and eve's biblical 'fall from innocence'). we saw el bring max back to life. maybe henry wants the fountain of youth for his grand plan, and holly is very young? this would also make for an emotional ending in terms of the party eventually growing up and leaving hawkins - innocence lost.

Yeah, I think that's also why I've adopted the mindset of not getting attached to any theory or prediction anymore - loving the reality that the show can go a million different ways and I don't necessarily want or need to strictly figure it out, where before it was all idea, all theory all the time, let's figure it out! I don't need to have all the answers. The mystery will be funner going in with an understanding of the deeper themes beyond surface level at play in the show, but not with a rigid preconceived notion to the finer details and plot lines.

The thing that worried me initially about Holly was a weariness about a Will in season 1 storyline repetition and that's what my initial thought was for her - but I don't believe that will entirely be the case, that it's a situation of a missing kid lost in the UD for the whole season. There's got to be something else going on. I know the Wheelers are going to be important. And agreed - that just because the Wheelers, and Mike, are going to have storylines connected very intimately with the supernatural this season doesn't mean it's taking away from Will. Going to be very different.

The difference with Will is that his is going to be of an actual connection, some sort of otherworldly thing innate to himself, to his being, whether in the traditional sense of powers or similar or more akin to abilities others don't have. Something Henry wants and needs from Will specific to Will. So my worry was Holly having that same something special or unique - but I don't think they're going to be a 1:1 situation. The nod to her in season one - that is youth and innocence and so intrinsic to children, especially children in horror movies. It's not that the child has powers or is special - but that kids are more sensitive to the paranormal as a standard horror trope, as in real life. Kids afraid of the monster under the bed, that uncertainty of what's lingering in the dark, a whisper in the air because their imagination is broader and more accessible. They're still learning the world so they observe things that adults overlook or ignore. Holly could fit that role, somehow, without making her Will Byers 2.0.

YES! I think you are very onto something here. This seems very possible as a theme. The way that his victims all remain with him as a part of the lore we still need more answers for. The way that there's so much going on with the lab kids, with the age Will was taken, the way that I'm pretty sure something is going on with the children of Hawkins in season 5 but there's so many paths that potential theory can take. Love the fountain of youth theory.

This all makes me think of that speech in Poltergeist (a big inspiration for parts of the show in general - Will Byers of course, season 1 vibes, where we are returning thematically for sure...)

JeongMee Yoon

JeongMee Yoon is a South Korean photographer and was born in Seoul and Studied and got her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She is especially renowned for her photo series that she created in 2006 “The Pink and Blue Project”, which was also around the time she got her MFA. This was not her only well-known series, but it is the first one that comes up when you research her. These series of photos immediately draw the eye with their child like imagery of assortment of toys, books, and other things meant for kids. Not to mention, they are separated by color and also reflect a gender disparity between things meant for children with girls’ toys being mainly pink and boys’ toys being mainly blue. But that is just the surface level part of the project. Overall, it shows the view that consumerism and commercialism have on growing minds through media and the things they are trying to sell.

Not only dose this series show a disparity of gender ideals with color, but it also shows how companies market their products and make their products for different genders by making toys pushing stereotypical female and male roles. For example, toys marketing to girls tends to be thing like toy baby dolls and cooking or cleaning appliance while toys marketed to boys tend to have depictions of sports equipment and trucks. Not to mention the clothing, things like clothing is also shown to be extremely gendered as the blue pictures depicting things marketed to boys only depict shirts and pants while costumes tend to be things like superheroes. The pink side however has frilly shirts and dresses and skirts while costumes tend to be things like Disney princesses.

Again, this shows the things that are pushed on impressionable minds in a subconscious level by making these hard lines of what is considered for boys and what is considered for girls and also subconsciously tells them what roles are for girls and for boys. Not only that, but it also limits them at a young age what they are exposed to, again, with the aforementioned line that media reinforces, saying what is and isn’t things boys and girls can like.

On top of that, not only dose it shows how this effects children, but also how they are affected later on in life as the other versions of JeongMee’s series shows the people in theses series show them growing up and while the pink and blues are less prominent, there are some traces left in their life. Showing how this kind of marketing can influence our growing minds and overall mindset of gender and gender roles.

Looking at her other series, she relies a lot on color and obvious compositions that more immediately draw the eye around the picture. With the aforementioned “The Pink and Blue Project” utilizing single dominant colors and pattern from the different toys, cloths and other objects. Looking at the pieces from afar reminds me a lot of larger scale photos that are created with smaller image photos.

I think that they all have unique relationships with Logan so they perceive themselves as the special one and act accordingly even if that mindset manifests differently per sibling. I would also say that of all the kids, it’s Connor who is the outsider and is treated as such by everyone although yes, if we have only the trio, then Roman’s the odd one out. 

Connor and Roman are alike in that way. Logan messed with Kendall and Shiv so that they wholeheartedly believe they’re the anointed ones. Logan’s number one boy and daddy’s little girl. His Pinky. They have that “Dad loves me the most. He picked me. I’m his favorite” mindset, and that’s why they try so hard to please him. On the other hand, Connor and Roman are the outsiders in that Connor is forgotten and therefore a non-entity and people think there’s something too wrong about Roman to consider him a complete human being (this isn’t even touching upon Roman and sex, another way he’s seen as not whole). Connor and Roman yearn to get Logan to look at them and see that they’re real. They exist! They’re right in front of him! Notice/don’t forget them! The difference is that Connor has long since resigned himself to the idea that he’ll never get the love he seeks while Roman is desperately still trying.

I totally agree that Roman is “special” because of the physical abuse, though. I’m reminded of Roman gloating in “Too Much Birthday”; that made me so queasy because he’s aware of his relationship with Logan, but his emotions on the subject are tragically twisted and tangled. There’s also the extra “what Dad and I have is different” layer to it all because Logan himself is a victim of physical abuse and only Roman has that in common with him.  

This is a bit of an aside, but Logan’s suffering colors his perspective on what he does to Roman. It makes him regret what he does to Roman after the fact because he knows firsthand it’s bad and how it can hurt someone—but only up to a certain point. He’ll dismiss and deny the abuse and outright gaslight Roman into saying that it wasn’t anything because is it “really” abuse? A little slap? That doesn’t count because he knows what “real” abuse is, and real abuse leaves horrific scars on your back for life. That’s nothing.

In Logan’s mind, Roman deserves it anyway because Roman can’t stop and the lesson needs to be beaten into him. If Roman acted like a real person and didn’t go too far like he always does, there would be no need to hit him. Roman “makes” him hit him. He doesn’t hit his other kids. (He does, however, hit one other person in the show: Iverson, who Logan notably believes has something wrong with him because it’s implied that he’s autistic. Iverson isn’t a real, whole boy to him either.)

It’s not about weakness. He thinks Kendall and Shiv are weak, but he doesn’t hit them. He’ll psychologically mess with them. He’ll even mock them which strangely, he doesn’t ever do to Connor or Roman, at least when it comes to physical shortcomings for a lack of a better phrase because we all know he has no qualms about loudly saying what he thinks is wrong with his kids (S1 finale when he interrupts Kendall to say he can’t talk properly and goads/commands him to when Kendall’s stuttering gets intense and S3 finale when he singles out Shiv by imitating her because she’s just a stupid little girl in his eyes). But he doesn’t hit them. They don’t cross the line like Roman does because their desire for attention doesn’t manifest the way it does for Roman and because, you can argue, they’ve seen what will happen if they do.

It comes back to Roman not feeling like he’s seen as a real person, something that people—his family—have said to his face. He acts out to get noticed and continues pushing buttons to get a reaction for once because of Logan and when he does that to Logan, he gets unique attention. It’s not attention he wants per se, but at least Dad is paying attention to him. That’s what makes him special. That’s what makes him close to Dad—and the most like Dad. (Up through S4E2, excluding some wrestling with Shiv and Kendall that’s mostly stupid sibling behavior, he’s the only one who eggs someone to hit him and assaulting them.)

Kendall and Shiv think that too though they approach it from a different angle. They’re special. They’re close with Dad because they’re the chosen ones and they’re the most like Dad because of that which is why, I think, they end up refusing to return to Logan or put up with him anymore unlike Connor and Roman. Because Logan wouldn’t and they’re Logan. (And just like Roman, they then end up treating others the way they were taught by Logan and mistreated and abused by him.)

its like. roman being the only who was hit as a kid puts literally everything about him in perspective. in the way there’s something extra fucked up and extra broken about roman that isnt the romantic tragedy of kendall or the ‘daddys girl fights misogyny’ vindication of shiv. in the way of ‘there’s something wrong with you.’ in the way of his outsider status with his siblings, but Especially in his attachment to logan. if you’re getting singled out to be hit, who’s to say you’re not going to convolute that into thinking its because you’re extra special? that dad loves you in a special way that culminates into a special punishment? dad and i have a different bond because he’s struck me but has never struck you so it must be because what he feels for me is stronger

Matt's faith in the show is really important and well explored; one of the first scenes of the show is Matt going to confession (or, well, talking to his priest since he's not really confessing at that point). Matt struggles a lot with what he's supposed to do; everyone's telling him to kill the villain and he kinda wants to, but he literally says: "I know my soul is damned if I take his life". He struggles with his faith and goes with his doubts to his priest, and it's beautiful—also when he finally gets a costume for his vigilanteing he chooses to dress as the devil, lol. (His priest tells him that nothing makes people run to Church faster than the feeling of having the devil on their heels.)

a lot of the show is about how he justifies his vigilante actions with his faith, and whether he's doing the right thing in trying to help people or just using it as an outlet for his anger. the literal first scene of the show has him in a confession booth talking to his priest (who is a really interesting character too). this is not the scene I was talking about but it's such an excellent scene with matt talking to his priest: https://youtu.be/XHZ3NbEIDdw

And goes there whenever there is a moral conundrum about killing people being Bad even though it would solve a lot of problems and stop said people from killing other people. his catholicism is a huge piece of his characterisation he was raised by nuns in a catholic orphanage, the first scene we ever see him (as an adult and not a flashback) is him going to confession, he is good friend with his priest and has regular debates with him, etc also in s3 he has a huge crisis of faith after he lost A Lot where he stops believing for a while and it's linked to his identity crisis where he actually wants to kill another person (a hard line he previously chose never to cross) and wants to be only daredevil and not matt murdock, when he is both and needs both to exist also when he was a kid his grandmother used to say "watch out for the murdock boys, they've got the devil in them" and it created a surprising lot of his issues

So he's both catholic in the comics and the show but he's More Catholic in the show. Like, raised in a catholic orphanage by nuns (ONE OF WHICH IS HIS *MOTHER*), second scene in the show has him in a confession box kind. Matt Murdock goes out and gets the shit beaten out of him nightly and also beats the shit out of other people and purposefully leaned into devil iconography as his theme. When his nurse friend says, he takes a lot of punishment without one complaint he says "That part's the Catholicism." It is a Core Aspect of his character (at least in the show). He makes me insane. Also the same chemicals that blinded him created the teenage mutant ninja turtles and everyone should know that.

So Daredevil struggles with his mission as a crime fighter because killing criminals goes against his faith. He makes it a point to not kill criminals, believing that even bad people deserve a second chance. This philosophy puts him at odds against The Punisher, who is a relentless killer. As a Catholic myself, while I love the concept of a morally conflicted superhero, I think the worldbuilding around Daredevil is lacking. If he struggles with violence and killing, why doesn't he pray to warrior saints like Saint Michael, Saint Ignatius of Loyola (a former knight), or Saint Joan of Arc? Why isn't there a community of other Catholics he can turn to for guidance, considering New York City has a sizeable population of Catholics? And why are the churches he goes to always empty? Doesn't he know that the Catholic Church supports the just war theory? I think that would have made his burden more bearable.

He goes to church and confesses to punching people and says "imma do it again can i apologize in advance" and the father dude says "no you're meant to stop now" and Matt says "no" and they do this everyday. I'm not remembering it properly but this is a canon interaction i swear

She has so much religious symbolism when it comes to her relationship to Madoka. Madoka is God and Homura becomes Lucifer so that she can save Madoka and give her happiness.
