Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday Canada will impose punitive tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles — copying a similar initiative that the U.S. is already pursuing to stop a flood of what's been described as unfairly state-subsidized cars. Trudeau made the announcement at the federal cabinet retreat in Halifax where ministers are meeting to craft a strategy for the year ahead — the last year before an expected federal election in October 2025. Amid industry pressure to copy the U.S. program, Trudeau said a 100 per cent surtax will be levied on all Chinese-made EVs, effective Oct. 1. The tariff would effectively double the price of imported vehicles, as it is expected most of the tax would be passed on to consumers.

Longshoremen, July 1937. This shows the prevailing method of transferring bananas from the end on the conveyor that carried them from the hold of the ship onto the dock. They were then carried on the men's shoulders across the dock and into freight cars by the East River to freight trains going westward. In this photo, the boat has just arrived from Mexico with "Mexican Gold" bananas. This is Pier No. 13, East River, New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Line.

Jonathan Nicholson at HuffPost:
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump threatened on Monday to impose high tariffs on imports if he is elected, regardless of whether Congress could pass them or not.
“Number one, I don’t need them. I don’t need Congress, but they’ll approve it,” Trump said at an agriculture-themed campaign stop in Smithton, Pennsylvania. “I’ll have the right to impose them myself if they don’t. I’d rather get their support. The ones that understand business all support it,” he said. Prior to the Great Depression, tariff rates were mostly set by Congress. But in the wake of global trade barriers put up during the Depression, Congress delegated authority to negotiate international trade deals to the president, subject to congressional approval. But the president also retains some power to unilaterally set tariffs, including under national security and anti-dumping laws, according to the Congressional Research Service. Trump’s comments marked the latest round in the former president’s tirades about trade and threats to impose barriers whose cost most economists say would fall squarely on consumers.
Trump has consistently said he would impose a 10% tax on imports from most countries and has often threatened a higher tariff of up to 60% on goods from China, the world’s second-largest economy. Though Trump has billed tariffs as a cost-free way to raise huge amounts of money for the government and punish countries perceived as uncooperative with the United States, economists have warned they could cause havoc for the economy, especially if they ignite a trade war with other big economic powers.
Want a stable economy? Vote Kamala Harris. Donald Trump will unravel the economy into chaos if he is re-elected.

08/24/24: Saturday yard sale bonanza! I can't believe all these nice things I got this morning! A guy on Facebook posted his yard sale and he put up a pic saying most games $5 bucks. So of course my curiosity got me! And when I made it there, I saw a big table full of multiple games from different consoles. Quite a few commons that I had already. So I grabbed a few I didn't have. And as I kept searching, my stack got bigger. Japanese games were popping out too! I also found some nes and snes carts but the man wanted $10 each for those. And I bit on a few og nintendo carts. So I finally had to stop. I think I got enough. Five JPN psp games, five jpn DS games, one wii game, two ps3 games, two xbone and 1 ps4 game. Two ps1 games. And ps1 Dragon Quest VII jpn! Total for everything there was $135 dollars! And just to make it an even $140, I grabbed Pit-fighter SNES. And the guy was cool with it. I'm excited to add these to my ever growing collection!
