Just because he and Nico are together, it doesn't mean that he doesn't see it.

He's not a complete idiot.

He's been one of the people who's been first hand viewer of those longing looks for years.

Which longing looks you ask?

Well, the longing looks between Nico and Lewis of course.

Especially those looks Nico sends Lewis' way when he thinks no one's watching.

He tells himself it's okay. It's him who's together with Nico, not Lewis.

But truth be told, sometimes those looks are really hard to deal with.

No one wants their partner to look at someone else. Especially not like that.

The only redeeming thing was that Nico and Lewis had a past together.

But--- that actually really didn't help to calm Jenson's mind.

At all.

It only made him wonder even more of what happened between these two.

It felt like they spent eternity together.

Seriously.... Something must have happened between them at one point, right?

Or maybe it was one of those 'what if' type of thing.....

That was even worse.

Because now they didn't know what it was like and they never would.

Knowing them----it probably was exactly that.

Jenson had stayed silent. Just let Nico watch Lewis with longing in his eyes.

In the end, he was the one who Nico called his partner.

Him. Jenson. Not Lewis.

That's what was important. Or at least that's what he told himself.

But sometimes... Sometimes he couldn't stop himself from being short with Nico.

Nico most of the time didn't even notice. Too wrapped up in his own head. His own bubble.

But this time he noticed Jenson's snappy, snarky remarks and asked him what was wrong.

Normally Jenson would answer with "nothing," or say he didn't sleep well or something like that.

But this time he couldn't do it.

"You were staring at him again."

Jenson closed his eyes for a second, willing himself to have some strength.

"I literally have no idea who or what you're talking about."

Nico looked away. Jenson knew he got him trapped in a corner now.

Nico watches Lewis.

Of course he fucking does. Some habits can't just be kicked easily, especially when the time spent doing them was longer than the time spent not doing them. And it doesn't matter how much time passess, or how many times Jenson calls him out on it, or how easy it was for him not to reach for cocaine every time he felt down in 2017. You don't spend over twenty years with Lewis Hamilton, half of those being his teammate, without getting into the habit of watching him.

Lewis was good at hiding things from everyone. He's had to be. Any weakness was exploited, and if he showed any hurt, it doubled back on him three times worse. Nico knows this, because by the end, he was the one who caused it. But Lewis was very good at hiding things from people, except if those people knew how to read him. Then, sometimes, one could find out if Lewis' car specs weren't to his liking by the way his face scrunched before the race and use it, or see when a comment affected Lewis more than he let on and press on the already tender flesh to distract him enough to make a mistake. But those things only happened if one knew where to look, and Nico always knew.

Namely, Nico used to watch him for other reasons too, but those reasons haven't been relevant for a while. And even if they were relevant, it wouldn't matter, because Lewis refused to look back.

Nico sometimes thought it was his greatest victory, making Lewis go out of his way to pretend Nico didn't exist.

Sometimes, though, it just felt like his biggest defeat.

So Nico watches Lewis in the paddock sometimes. It's hard not to, when he's so sure of himself, walking around with an easy expectation that the path before him will clear itself. The annoying thing is that it does, always. It makes Nico smile every time he sees reporters scatter, aware they won't be getting anything from Lewis, except some good pictures if they position themselves right.

It's happening now, too. Lewis is walking through the paddock, Angela in tow, and Nico has to admit that his styling today is good. Sometimes Lewis missess in his fashion expression, but as more time passess, the less it happens. These days, his styling is almost impeccable. A Sky reporter goes to intercept him, but Lewis doesn't even register him. He just walks past, unbothered, an easy smile on his face. The reporter's face sours. Nico knows he's been aiming for a soundbite about the latest war, hoping to provoke Lewis into saying something stupid, like only a rich sportsman can. It's fouble points if it's Lewis, though, because of course it is, and now they will have nothing.

Good boy, Nico thinks. Give them nothing. They'll make something up anyway.

Lewis' smile widens suddenly, and Nico looks ahead at what has caught his eye. He tilts his head when he sees Sebastian walking towards Lewis, Britta talking at him rapidly as he nods.

Nico leans back on the column and fixes his sunglasses. This will be good.

Sebastian doesn't spot Lewis until Britta elbows him almost imperceptibly. The moment he sees Lewis he grins, and they do the handshake-then-a-half-hug thing befor ethey separate and start talking animatedly. Except; Nico knows Lewis.

Lewis lingers for just a moment too long after the hug.

Nico grins. He can spot how off Lewis will be in his time after not hitting the curb right up to the thousandth of a second. He can damn well spot when Lewis lingers too long in a hug.

He leans his head back as he watches Lewis and Sebastian. He thinks they are talking about the GPDA meeting, if the way they're standing close and speaking lowly is any indication. The biggest giveaway is the subtle anger in Sebastian's face, though. It's been a long time since that expression was caused by racing; human rights it must be, then. He shakes his head and tucks a stray curl of his too long hair behind his ear. Nico thinks how he should get a conditioner, but that doesn't prevent him from seeing the way Lewis' fingers twitch.

"Oh," he gasps. "Oh, Lewis, you idiot."

It's good that nobody's near him, because that was a slip he can't afford. Not for his sake, and not for Lewis'. He shakes his head. He'll berate himself later; he has to watch now. He has to know for sure.

It's really in the small things, that's the fact. How Lewis doesn't stop smiling. How he brushes some non-existent lint from Sebastian's sleeve. How he mirrors Sebastian's posture. How Britta looks at him without him noticing, with pity in her eyes. How Angela doesn't, looking everywhere else to see if anyone is watching.

Nico pulls out his phone and pretends to type when Angela looks in his direction. He gives it ten seconds more before he looks up again than he would if it was anyone else looking, because Angela doesn't trust him, and she never did. He respects her a bit for that. Not much, but a bit.

He keeps looking until they part ways with a clasp of hands and wide smiles. Lewis' back is turned to him, so Nico can't watch him anymore, but Sebastian's face is now fully visible as he turns to Britta and continues talking.

It hits Nico immediately. Sebastian doesn't know.

That's... not quite surprising. Sebastian was always very good at ignoring certain things that were very obvious to people around him, always focused on racing first and foremost on race weekends. With the way his career has been going, Nico is pretty sure Sebastian has no time to think about anything else. Nico can't help a small smile at that. He's pretty sure Sebastian won't be racing for much longer. Nico doesn't know how to read Sebastian that well anymore, but some feelings are universal, and once you see them in the mirror, you never forget them.

What Nico doesn't know is how long has it been like this, and that bothers him. He has to know; has to figure out when it happened. He's missed it somehow, the moment Lewis' feelings changed, and that doesn't sit well with him. He doesn't know when it happened, but he knows Lewis.

Lewis is competitive. Lewis doesn't like to lose. Lewis likes a challenge. Lewis doesn't go for the easy option. Lewis leaves enough room on track to avoid collisions. Lewis doesn't back off, except when he does. Lewis doesn't trust easily anymore. Lewis will overtake first before he allows himself to be overtaken.

As Nico watches Sebastian, Charles Leclerc steps into his path with his media officer. The smile on his face is the perfectly polite, Monegasque born-and-bred blandness that still shows off his dimples. Sebastian stops, and says something that makes Charles laugh, and then pulls him into a hug.

They both linger just a moment too long.

Nico can't help but grin.

"Well," Nico mutters to himself. "Yes. That would do it."

If you ever want to know why I love MotoGP more than F1, it's the mentality.

Don't get me wrong, the fancy F1 style which is mostly professional with some funny moments is perfect. But it's mainly glamorous. It's supposed to be the perfect Monaco sport.

MotoGP has the expensive aspect as well. But they are just a bunch of chaotic man that love motorcycles and no one is trying to change that for the media.

In f1 people get media training about the "Can you wank yet" question. The laugh about "lol" from max or the "if my mom had balls she'd be my dad" quote was quoted way too many times. The webber glass smash or the angry hat through from brocedes is still legendary. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg being "anything but lovers". I literally can't think of any significant media thing. Sorry.

Motogp is like... Let me post a picture of me touching my balls thorough my race wear. I think it was Quartararo who made a video imply that he's racing in fucking lingerie. They get ass smacks from their team before and after a session. Pecco and Bez are getting referred to as an old married couple. Rider jumping on (and fucking) each other in prac ferme. Jorge said that he'll marry his childhood rival in 2-3 years after they hugged (we know you're touch starved, Jorge but how good was that hig please?). Bez talking to Domizia (Pecco's fiance) and calling Bagnaia "OUR future husband". The Marquez brothers kissed ON THE MOUTH on International live TV. Martin and Aleix E. kissed each other in a club (I think it was them, no idea about the context). And Vale... trying to gather my thoughts and put this as eloquently as possible.

if you haven't caught up, recently jenson button gave an interview in which he gave advice to lewis hamilton about his move to ferrari. unsurprisingly, this spurred some 'discourse' (shudders) about how lewis ex-teammates-turned-pundits (mostly nico and jenson Imao) tend to give weird borderline-psycho analysis about lewis even though it has been quite a significant amount of time since they were teammates and who knows if this analysis is even too applicable to lewis as he has changed A LOT since his tenure with them.

and again, unsurprisingly, this brought out a chunk of the fanbase that can never pass up the opportunity to give a dig at lewis and treat guy's like jenson and nico's words like gospel. one frankly gross post went on and on and on about how unbothered jenson was during his time as lewis's teammate (no he was not) and how much of a paranoid weirdo freak lewis was about being challenged by a teammate (never mind the fact his first teammate was fernando fucking alonso).

and this is a worrying trend i see growing amongst a faction of f1 fans who try and ignore the context of lewis and his place in the sport. lewis is a black man in a predominantly white sport. jenson nor nico, no matter how much people will place them on some babygirl pedestal, will NEVER know what that means or what this is like so whenever i hear them recount their time together as teammates, the context of this is always lost.

in 2011, lewis had split with his dad as his manager and was going through a tumultuous time with his girlfriend, nicole. i don't know about you, but if my personal relationships with the people i cared about were on rocky grounds, that would tend to affect how i interact with people at my workplace. nevermind the fact that it was also magazine gossip fodder. that type of spotlight affects you heavy. especially working in the toxic environment of early 2010s mcclaren.

nowadays, lewis, at best, is professional and cordial with both jenson and nico which is not a problem but for some reason some fans think lewis's attention and time should be spent fawning and talking about these men. they're unable to see him as somebody that is not fanfiction fodder for their white faves and it is generally disturbing the lengths they will go to to justify their lack of empathy, compassion, and consideration of his place as he tries to exist within a space that was resistant to accommodating his identity (2007 barcelona testing anyone?).

and if it wasn't bad enough, these same 'fans' have the cheek to imply that hamilton is psychologically weak for not engaging with these guys beyond a professional level. the same man who was racially abused by grown white adults since the age of 12 is psychologically weak. wow. truly stunning. and these fans always give a half-hearted "yeah of course lewis has gone through some racial trauma but-" but nothing. end of. your what fav and you have no fucking clue as to what racial trauma does to black children and how it seriously impacts them. so don't ever try to erase this impact. you're overstepping: it's not your place.

so if it wasn't clear: lewis hamilton does not owe your white fav anything. if he wants to mind his business while rolling by in his scooter, that's not a problem. you brocedes/slagclaren types that only tolerate him for his proximity to these white men are frankly, racist, and your pathetic attempts to hide behind your racism because lewis isn't as perfect as he tries to be' (yeah no shit) make it such a hostile environment for black fans who can smell your bs from a mile away.

what do you think is the most defining reason brocedes fell apart? i've always been of the opinion that they could've come back from the mind games and all the hurtful shit they said to and about each other in the press (with time) but they couldn't come back from the fact that lewis hated losing/being second to nico. also i've seen some people say that, they wouldn't of fell apart as badly if they were on different teams but i disagree. i think they would've ripped each other apart no matter if they were on the same team or not. it's just the nature of brocedes y'know, to rip apart the thing you love. (god fuck now i;m thinking of that one poem that's like "have you ever killed something good for you just to be certain that you're the reason you can no longer have it?" auuugh head in hands head in hands)

hm I disagree very heavily. brocedes fell apart because they were in the same team competing for the championship. they've been in the same team before! they literally karted for 2 years together in the same team and they were best friends. even in 2013 when the merc wasn't good enough for the championship, they were buddy buddy as teammates trading a handful of wins. in 2008 when they were on different teams they did interviews about their friendship, lewis spun nico around for his and their first podium together.

if they were competing from different teams for the championship in 2016, I can see brocedes turning out more like sewis where they'd be rivals on track but cordial and even friends off it.

they're not ontologically coded to rip each other apart. the problem was mercedes, that both drivers felt the other was being more favoured while merc officially maintained there's no first driver. it's also the very unique circumstances that the hybrid era merc dominance meant they were each other's only rivals for most of the time. there was no fighting against the rest of the grid which forces you to work together, your biggest rival is your teammate, and that made things toxic. every weekend was swapping 1-2s but even the engineers and driver teams started viewing the other side of the garage as their competitors. it's also the fact that nico put up a hell of a fight, if there had been a clear gap like lewis and valtteri (even without team orders) then nico could've been forced to swallow the second driver role like mark webber.

ultimately it's a very simple story of there can only be 1 winner, and they both wanted to win.

For me Chewis is more real than Chestappen. Chestappen only exists because they are teammates, but with Lewis although they did not share a team, they sought to spend time together

Chewis has history, yes, and poor Checo was in the middle of Brocedes divorce, sharing podiums with those two... but not sure if one is more real than the other (considering that we are talking about real people and that's our take in their relationship). Chestappen didn't started with RBR exactly, Checo and Max had their moments since he joined the grid in 2015, but yeah, they got closer when they became teammates.

I like both ships, but Chewis was first, so it has a special place in my heart, but I read your tone in a way that you imply Max doesn't care about Checo, and Lewis does (maybe I'm wrong, sorry if that's the case), but I do believe Max is fond of Checo, even when others say that Max smiles at everything and is nice to everyone.

Anyway, I hope they get over this marriage crisis because I can't take more disappointment this season.
