The amount of sunlight landing here the rate of water rushing per second the flow of energy through a surface—these are flux. Dysentery—the flux. Lost fluids. An act of passing in and out such as two crowds of people passing each other in a terminal. It can be painful. Once, I saw Debra in passing and she smiled. It was all we could do. There is no such touch in passing I don’t think. When she’d gone I’d fallen to the floor and thought supposedly flux is a substance for soldering metals and vitrifying ceramics and glass. Or perhaps I thought it meant continuous change. Cataracts get their name from waterfalls. Opacity rains osmotic rocks. It can be painful. It can be life on its way out. It can be—there are many forceful discharges that rely on downward motion.

Fall 2023 at the Poetry Project:
The Endless Feminist Reading Group Thursdays, 7–9pm ET // September 7–October 5 virtual
Within light there is darkness, but do not try to understand that darkness. Within darkness there is light, but do not look for that light. —Sekito Kisen, “Identity of Relative and Absolute,” 8th Century
In Madeleine L'Engle's A Ring of Endless Light, a teen processes the complexity of grief and the confusion of her desires through developing a telepathic connection to dolphins. The titular light is endless in that it contains both life and death, trauma and healing, suffering and joy, not as opposing poles, but as continuous substance. What does the ring of endless light encircle? Darkness? A mirror? An ocean?
In the Endless Feminist Reading Group, we will explore questions of eternity, timelessness, repetition, and relation. Some artists who might join us as guides inside the vastness include: Etel Adnan, Bruce Boone, Courtney Bush, Sean DeLear, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Fanny Howe, Imani Elizabeth Jackson, Benjamin Krusling, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Fred Moten, Adrian Piper, Gabrielle Octavia Rucker, Jackie Wang, Simone Weil, and Simone White. This feminist reading group will be facilitated by the Poetry Project's Program Director, Laura Henriksen. $75

please know there is a kindness to sweat. laid here as such i become/a lake. please read the gesture and return it
when you say you feel good in this world we make i say the feeling’s returned
how good it is to return, not as charity but of love
this feeling is not mutual but returned
— Imani Elizabeth Jackson, from “Slow Coup (for ancient music),” published in Apogee Journal

Public Collectors Courtroom Artist Residency #13: Imani Elizabeth Jackson.
Imani just got back into town from an artist residency at ACRE in Wisconsin, and I'm headed there next week, where I'll serve as a visiting artist. I'm always the artist and never the resident, I guess, but at least they'll feed me while I'm there and I'm looking forward to a little being taken care of. Imani is in the process of moving to Providence for grad school. She expressed interest in being a Courtroom Artist Resident about eight months ago and I felt like we'd better act fast so that this could happen before she leaves Chicago.
In the car ride to court we talked a little about ACRE and what she worked on there (writing, paper making, screenprinting t-shirts, and prepping some ideas for a performance) and about what we might observe today.
Today's residency felt somewhat atypical from the start. Is everyone on vacation? Are the judges at the beach? We started in Judge James B. Linn's courtroom and waited around for him to show up. He never did so we went to another courtroom, and then another and then another. It was about 50 minutes before we went into a court where something was actually happening. Most of the courts seemed to have very few cases today and twice I had to tell a judge or bailiff that we were just there to observe court because with so few people in the room or defendants that weren't in custody, our mere presence had the potential to cause confusion.
This wasn't Imani's first time at Criminal Court. Her brother has been dealing with the court system for several years now and she has attended his hearings with family members. It has been a while since she has been to one of his hearings and thus far that has been her only experience of court. Our decision about which courtrooms to observe was mostly determined by who was actually in session with at least some people clearly waiting for a case to be heard. We spent the most time in the court of Judge Joseph Claps who Imani soon realized is the judge that has been hearing her brother's case. We observed the judge handle a number of cases involving drugs, a domestic battery, criminal trespass, a DUI, some probation violations, and one woman who happily had her probation terminated.
One thing that has come up multiple times in today's residency as well as the one before it, is that defendants who have been drug tested and came up positive for marijuana, are being chastised for using a drug that is going to be legal for recreational use in Illinois starting on January 1st, 2020. Judge Clap told one defendant, "Personal use of marijuana doesn't start until next year. I wouldn't get ahead of the game."
Even on a slow day, we found more than enough to talk about over a lunch of tamales and a chicken torta at Tacqueria El Milagro. Like court, El Milagro was also slow, as business is for many places in Little Village because of fear of ICE raids. Please support these businesses, whether you live in Chicago or are just visiting.
I just completed the third booklet of Courtroom Artist Residency Reports. My conversation with Imani will go into the fourth booklet, which should see release an about four months. You can find the most recent booklet, and all others, here.

We think about what stereotypes say about blackness and water, blackness and swimming. Before the stereotypes that now exist there were claims about our great athletic ability, our enlarged lungs. Sinister alabaster always evolves our biology in its distorted imagination, in false study. Sinister alabaster always transforms us from mermaids into monsters.
Consider the oyster: gelatinous creature encased in mineral shell. Pearls, which essentially are tumorous growths, emerge from an intrusion upon the oyster, a grain of sand or another fine particle entering the shell. This is often used as a metaphor—as pressure makes diamonds, time makes pearls. What is left out, aside from time, is a muted, unacknowledged pain.

Do you have any advice for amab people dealing with height dysphoria? I wasn't able to find anything in the FAQ concerning dysphoria resulting from being too tall, and most of the advice I could find via tags was aimed specifically at trans women, but I'm nonbinary so much of it doesn't really work for me... I have a lot of difficulty with height dysphoria since I know that in the end it's the one thing I can never change.
Harper says:
Hey anon! You’re right there about a lack of height dysphoria tips for amab/trans feminine people, so I’ll try my best to make this a fairly comprehensive tip list. (So sorry if some of this isn’t relevant to you!)
From what I can tell, there’s nothing I can find about medically reducing height. HRT doesn’t seem to do much if you have already gone through puberty prior to HRT - the only thing that really reduces height is aging past your twenties. (Like how old people get shorter.)If I might ramble about my own experience as standing at around 6ft tall.
For me, what I’ve found is that it helps most to play into it when I’m out and about, which means putting on an outfit and a Look that shows everyone how gorgeous you are. (I’m being a little corny here I know.) It can help distract you and others from your height if you’re wearing something fantastic - you look good regardless.
This advice here suggests: “horizontal lines, striped clothes, knee-length skirts, tall socks/boots, contrasting colors for shirt and pants, ¾ sleeves, and thick belts will make you look shorter.”
My other method is to look to other tall people in the media/in my life. One way of dealing with dysphoria is to learn how to see your height in more positive ways, to make it work for you and with you. It’s comforting for me to know and see there’s plenty of other women and nonbinary people as tall as and taller than me. A lot of models, supermodels, actors, etc. are tall and wonderful, Gwendoline Christie for example, or agender 6ft 2 model Rain Dove.
Digging around on Reddit led me to some other tips, including one user finding confidence by browsing the Tall subreddit. Someone suggests that it helps them remember that there are plenty of other nonbinary people and women, cis or trans, that would love to be taller - this has certainly been my experience.
Pat Says:
I agree with what Harper said and I would like to add the I’m 5’11 and AMAB non-binary and it took me a long time to be comfortable in my height and what helped was to start separating in my mind the stereotypes that often come with height and how we see someone tall as Masculine and someone short as Feminine. Now I don’t even own a pair of flats I’m always wearing heels of some sort and I love it.
Lee says:
This ask started a transfeminine height dysphoria tag to check out!
People may have height dysphoria because of the association of being tall with being a man, but there are also tall women out there, and non-binary people of every height.
Sadly there aren’t enough tall famous non-binary people to make a list, but here are is a list I gathered of 50 tall women:
Aisha Tyler, 6'0"
Allison Janney, 6'0"
Ann Coulter, 6'0"
Brooke Shields, 6'0"

Jane Lynch, 6'0"
Kimora Lee Simmons, 6'0"
Kristen Johnston, 6'0"
Macy Gray, 6'0"
Maya Angelou, 6'0"
Michelle Wie, 6'0"
Uma Thurman, 6'0"
Brigitte Nielsen, 6'1"
Janet Reno, 6'1"
Jennie Finch, 6'1"
Venus Williams, 6'1"
Amy Acuff, 6'2"
Cara Michelle, 6'2"
Cat Osterman, 6'2"
Cheryl Miller, 6'2"
Elizabeth Debicki, 6'2"
Ireland Baldwin, 6'2"
Jeanne Robertson, 6'2"
Jenny Kropp, 6'2"
Karlie Kloss, 6'2"
Kat Smith, 6'2"
Kayte Christensen, 6'2"
Lindsay Davenport, 6'2"
Maria Sharapova, 6'2"
Tina Thompson, 6'2"
Blanka Vlašić, 6'3"
Dot Jones, 6'3"
Gabrielle Reece, 6'3"
Gwendoline Christie, 6'3"
Judy Gold, 6'3"
Kerri Walsh, 6'3"
Kim Glass, 6'3"
Yolanda Griffith,  6'3"
Candace Parker, 6'4"
Rebecca Lobo, 6'4"
Yvetta Hlaváčová, 6'4"
Carolyn Moos, 6'5"
Elena Delle Donne, 6'5"
Lauren Jackson, 6'5"
Chantelle Anderson, 6'6″
Vonda Ward, 6'6″
Kara Wolters, 6'7"
Lisa Leslie-Lockwood, 6'7"
Anne Donovan, 6'8"
Lindsay Kay Hayward, 6'8"
Note that they’re not necessarily role models, it’s just a list of women who are tall to show they’re out there. There’s a lot of athletes and actors in the list because they’re more likely to have their height listed online than people in other professions like lawyers or dentists.
