One year after the explosive defamation trial played out between ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard—becoming a grotesque pop culture spectaclealong the way—Depp is set to debut his comeback film Jeanne du Barry at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of the premiere, supporters of Heard have launched a campaign online using the hashtag #CannesYouNot, calling out the festival and Depp, whom Heard accused of verbally and physically abusing her repeatedly throughout their marriage. A jury found both parties responsible for separate instances of defamation, but awarded Depp $15 million, with Heard winning a $2 million judgment.

“If you support Cannes you support predators,” journalist Eve Barlow posted on Instagram. “Cannes seem proud of their history supporting rapists and abusers.” One slide of her post features Depp alongside photos of other Hollywood men with various abuse allegations made against them, including Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, Gerard Depardieu, and Luc Besson.

“We think it’s hypocritical for the Cannes Film Festival to have an anti-discrimination, anti-abuse policy, while opening the festival with a film starring Johnny Depp,” the operator of the Twitter account @LeaveHeardAlone told Variety. “The Depp v. Heard trial became the vehicle through which the backlash against the #MeToo movement went viral. Hollywood industries seem to be riding that backlash to return to the status quo.”

Also on Tuesday, Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, who is a Cannes juror this year and a historically outspoken advocate of Time’s Up, dodged a question about Depp during a press conference.

“You’re asking me that?” she responded when asked whether she’d attend the Jeanne du Barry world premiere. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically. You’ll see, I guess, if I will see it. And I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do.” (Depp’s film is not playing in competition at Cannes, and thus Larson, as a juror, is not required to see it.)

Another star who gave a similarly noncommittal response to the Depp debacle was Natalie Portman. When asked by Vanity Fair in May if she had an opinion on Cannes opening with the Depp movie, Portman responded, “I haven’t read much about that. But it can always be better. We will keep pushing for it to be better.”

"He was totally manipulated into doing this. There were eight so-called Republicans that got together with 208 Democrats to oust the Republican Speaker."As Graves noted, only a very small minority of Republican representatives — eight in total, including Gaetz — elected to vacate the speakership. And while it takes many more than eight votes to oust the speaker, the entire Democratic caucus voted in lock-step with the small group of GOP rebels, ultimately bringing together the simple majority vote needed to complete the task at hand.Graves' comments to reporters on Wednesday were not the first he's made in recent days disparaging Gaetz. onald Trump wanted this past night to be about him — his Republican Party, his candidates, his vision.

The polls, and worried Democrats, thought it would be his night too. But the majority of voters had other ideas.

Largely they appear to have rejected extreme political novices for candidates who stand up for them.

But behind the celebrations there is another story: disappointment, anger and — thanks to the divided society created by Trump — suspicion too.

On my travels around America, I am frequently struck by the siloed nature of so many communities. They exist in their own echo chambers.

In many cases, frankly, they are lost inside these conspiracy-filled places and they don’t know it. The other day, I was talking to a young Republican supporter in Pennsylvania — where the Democrats have secured a surprise, and crucial, Senate victory for John Fetterman. A number of times this supporter mentioned “cat litter”. “The cat litter in schools, it’s crazy…” he said.

At the time, I didn’t pick him up on it. It wasn’t a central part of our conversation. And it was only later that I googled “cat litter schools America” and I understood what he was talking about.

“Schools in parts of America are allowing students who identify as cats to bring cat litter into the classroom.” Of course, it’s not true. It’s nonsense.

The issue it stems from is an important one — the extent to which gender identification should be reflected in schools. Conservatives have legitimate concerns about this. But the “cat litter” story has been peddled by at least 20 Republican Party candidates. They sell it as fact — all part of the Left’s woke agenda, they tell people. Except it’s not.

It’s one of so many wild conspiracies — nonsense which drives people to vote for the liars who have claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from them.

America has always been divided. News outlets have been partisan for the last three decades but today things are on a different level.

Left and, particularly Right-leaning cable news networks are now wildly partisan. Anchors on stations like Fox do not present news but hours of divisive opinion. Anger and outrage trumps fact and debate. Local newspapers are in decline and have been replaced by partisan online sites and shock-jocks.

Beyond that, so often I hear people say “I get my news from other sources; I do my own research.” Too often, that involves getting lost on social media and buying information that’s not fact-checked simply because it matches their perceived experience.

After last night, Donald Trump has some reflecting to do.

President Biden will be relieved and surprised. But he’ll know too that one better than expected night does not represent a nation healed.
