I’d like to mention that I’m not just expanding on other regions of the world. On characters and their dynamics with one another in this crazy project of a crossover that I’m doing. I’m also expanding on the dragons themselves. Playing around with the fact that they’re like people, and not all people are good. Some people just really, genuinely suck. But the thing this post is about is to showcase all the dragons who I am adding depth and lore to that we didn’t see in the films. Or the games. Because I am bringing in dragons from the games. So to all the School of Dragons players (RIP, that game was my childhood), here are the dragons from the games that I am bringing into this story (that I can immediately think of, especially since there’s a ten photo limit) (pictures supplied by Rise of Berk)

This story revolves around a group of gijinkas and some side characters that all reside within Cobblevale City. we follow 6 Individuals who work as one of the general teams for the Legendary Entei who is part of the city's "nursery sector" meet the team

Team leader, Tally-Ho or Tally for short Cetitan Gijinka Age- 32 Nature- Sassy She is very head strong and takes no shit from anyone but enjoys being the Dotting older sister of the group

Tox the second in command and overall "badboy" Toxtricity Gijinka Age- 27 Nature- bold he doesn't like getting wet, so don't rain on his parade has a soft spot for the Talonflame in their group named Ames has a band, enjoys music A LOT

Mochi the youngest member of the team and the silent little sister Pyukumuku Gijinka Age- 20 Nature- Quiet She sees both Tally and Tox as her older siblings, and will protect them with all her might she talks in sign language cause opening her mouth can be catastrophic Graham the Morgrem of the group ate her pudding from the communal fridge 3 years ago and she hasn't let him live that down she loves getting hugs from Ames

Umi the Loud heavy hitter of the group Breloom Gijinka Age- 28 Nature- Hardy Tally's Ride or die, AND LOVES TEASING THE SHIT OUT OF TOX Thinks Graham is a bit of a pretentious ass, but he wears his heart of his sleeve so she deals with it extremely protective of Mochi and Ames (insert they asked for no pickles meme here)

Graham the Shiny of the team Morgrem Gijinka Age- 27 Nature- Impish? Funny his nature says Impish but he acts more bashful when he's out in public? Graham has an everstone on him because he doesn't want to evolve even if it means he will never reach his full potential as a pokemon, he just doesn't want to deal with his families expectations shines in general are because of a virus, they need to use substance packets to keep their daily metabolism from dropping most shinnies don't try to become Arena fighters, but Graham feels he has something to prove he falls hard for a shiny Ribombee who's a receptionist at the battle arena.... "you sure you ain't bashful bruv?"

Finally the last team member and the newest to join Ames Talonflame Gijinka Age- 23 Nature- Jolly she moved to Cobblevale city from her small hometown of Whistleleaf village, she was personally invited by "Uncle" Entei himself she has a secret she can't fully share yet but in due time it will be revealed with her flame body she GIVES THE BEST HUGS, kinda oblivious to Tox's flirting

ANIME ADAPTATIONS ARE NOTTTTT NECESSARY FOR ALL MANGA OH MY GOD. ACTUALLY IT WLD MAKE A LOT OF THEM WORSE. Anime adaptation baseline for animation has been getting a lot better lately (a very standard studio now could be on par with the most beloved and highly praised studio ten or twenty years ago) but NO MATTER WHAT the art- especially lighting- of a manga will almost always look worlds better than the anime adaptation, simply because more detail can be added when its a still image. Similarly, some things CANT be reasonably added from a manga without it looking weird. Comics can get away with noy having a background on a panel, be it out of ease or influencing the mood of the panel, but animation has a lot harder of a time switching from a background to a solid coor or design without good reason- its not impossible, and in fact very common of you look for it, but its just... not smth you can do as often as in manga

In the anime, the visuals are a lot closer to L's face, with light not seen at all. There is less detail, but there is a shadow cast over half of L's face /End ID]

Take the "I am L" scene for example. The original manga has more shock to it. More of a creepy feeling, even. The anime maintains that in a way, but it also sacrifices a lot of the original appeal of that panel- the bacground flash, Light's face, etc. I wont discredit the anime and say that they didnt do a great job replicating the feeling with great music and voice dubbing, but visual-wise its. a little lacking. I will give credit to them, the shadow over the face does a more than you would think to improve this scene.

This is a manhwa, but a lot of fans bashed the solo leveling anime for this exact reason- the art of the manhwa had so much more detail and complex lighting than the anime, bcs it would be unreasonable for animators for spend time on the lighting for a minor scene in the show, but its easy for a manhwa artist to do it. And this is DESPITE solo levelling animation and visuals being an INCREDIBLE adaptation of the mood and original panels

Pleaseeee click on the manhwa one to see the full thing. One thing about the manhwa vs anime is the fact that manhwas are often made to be scrolled vetically, where anime is a horizontal screen. The screenshot above of the manhwa isnt even the entire thing, it didnt fit in my screen. Imo the anime is AMAZING and does a fantastic job adapting it, but literally it Cant Do It Perfectly because of the difference in media form.

ALSO !! ppl forget that comics are an art form in of themself- the way the story is told goes beyond just showing the characters doing things. Panelling specifically is an incredibly influential aspect of it. YES, many authors dont put so much into the panels that a major facet is lost if made into an anime, but SOME DO

Sui Ishida is a genius in terms of panelling and using the art form to his advantage- I didnt even include my fav page of his here, bcs theres soooo many good ones and I hit the image limit lolz. He utilizes text in a way unreplicatable by an anime adaptation, which doesnt use that. Even if it did, text shown in an animation has a different feel to it than a comic, where thoughts, diologue, and narration all use text. Much like the formatting of Solo Levellinng, TG text cant be replicated in another medium.

Fujimoto has some amazing panelling in CSM, in the way he seperates panels. While this is the most notable one, theres SO many worth sharing if I wasnt constrained by an image limit. Utilizing the characters and scenes themselves as the panel borders enhances the atmosphere, and creates an even mote sinister feeling to the page.

Kamome Shirahama is anothet author with amazing usage of panels and formatting- when background or lore is given, the panels have a fancy, intricate border to indicate its a story being told- see the right image. She also uses the parts of other panels to interact with new ones (see left image), and often has characters interact with the borders themselves. There is SO much I can say about her work but actually I think watching this video will do you better.

this is a very well drawn panel and hatching/composition aside. how many floors does Ducklair have? because im assumig this isn't part of the 101 floors donald counted (i hope theres inter-city tunnels for quick travel or something i would love that)

okay i loveee this composition. the bottom panel basically being a full page spread is really cool (the white is probably mainly just for bleed space)

the hatching on this comic is really good so far! and coloring wise i think i feel like its strongest when it has funky lighting like in the last panel. like the purple here:

im sure the normal scenes will grow on me, but for right now some of the character's neutral colors clash a bit with the background for me

Silhouette Mirage (1997)

SPOILERS FOR A GAME TWO PEOPLE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET HAVE PLAYED

treasure is one of those strange developers that you don't typically see anymore except for indie circles. they hated marketability and rehashing the same game ideas and IPs over and over again, and when they made a game, they would always strive to make something brand new. this is particularly evident in the japan exclusive sega saturn game silhouette mirage, made by the same internal development team that made the really strange but cool platformer dynamite headdy 3 years prior. and if you thought dynamite heady was strange, then boy howdy…

this game is pretty niche in the catalog of the already niche developer; it has not been rereleased in any form besides a japan exclusive PSN release in 2010. this is a game that strives for originality above all else, almost to it's detriment. as simply put as possible, this is a 2d platformer/run-and-gun... thing. the main gimmick of this game is that there are two types of enemies, silhouettes (blue) and mirages (red). the main character, shyna, has an ambidextrous sprite and can switch between both these elements depending on which way she is facing. if you shoot an enemy of the opposite color, say facing right so that your sprite is red and then shooting a blue enemy, they will take damage and after enough hits, die. but if you shoot an enemy of the same color, it simply drains their spirit (think MP). if they dont have any spirit, they cant perform any special attacks.

there are 7 different weapons, called parasites, named after each of the deadly sins. i tended to use gluttony the most, as it shoots a giant laser for as long as you hold the button (the other weapons tend to be button mashy). but here's the catch; if an enemy drains YOU of all your spirit, it will kill your parasite and you wont be able to use it anymore. how do you get more parasites? a bunny sells them to you for cash. how do you get cash? you go up to an enemy and bash their fucking brains in with your fist, making them drop gold. you can even do this to bosses. there's like 40 different moves in the game like this and rather than being demonstrated to you organically, they are explained only once during a boring tutorial at the beginning of the game. by the time it was over i had already forgotten most of them as some are so situational they're not even worth using.

oh yeah, by the end of the game, there are some enemies and bosses that are neither silhouette OR mirage! you try to shoot them but all your attacks bounce right off. to handle these fucking assholes, you must wait for them to sporadically shoot a projectile at you and use your reflector to slowly chip away at their health over the course of 5 minutes. this is as obnoxious as it sounds.

if the whole two elements thing sounds like ikaruga, well, it is. silhouette mirage was the origin of the polarity switch system in that game, but i feel like it's handled better in ikaruga. i would've much rather had a button press to switch elements im weak/resistant to rather than it having it depend on which direction i'm facing. you CAN press a button to change which side of shyna is red or blue, but the animation for it takes so long and it drains so much of your valuable spirit meter that it's never worth it. oh yeah did i mention your parasite gets weaker the less spirit you have? and in the fucking awful playstation localization by working designs, your spirit meter counts as AMMO!?!?!?!?!?!!!?? just play the saturn version; it's even fan translated now.

okay, so the gameplay is kind of a mess, but how's the everything else like the aesthetics? in a word: very fucking good. the art style is immediately pleasing to the eye with some really nice pixel art, some fun enemy designs, as well as a cute and very likable main character. the music is incredible: it's the same composers as dynamite headdy and guardian heroes, so from that pedigree alone you're guaranteed tons of bangers. the levels you traverse also look really cool, from a nighttime city to a european castle and even a fucked up game show.

the story, as crazy as it is, ultimately goes into very dark and uncomfortable territory, much like a kirby game, and only got more and more interesting as i played. i particularly liked the endings; there are several and rather than just the typical "good ending" or "bad ending", they're both very subjective and what outcome that would be more preferable will depend on the person playing the game. as non-spoilerly as possible: would you rather restore the ruined earth to it's former state but be forgotten by history, or keep it as is and be celebrated and beloved for all of time by the few people that still remain on the planet? holy shit, is this a shin megami tensei game in disguise or what?! the ending to the game has been stuck in my head ever since i beat it, and truthfully, it made the very annoying climax of the game all worth it.

should you play this game? uh, maybe! are you a fan of treasure, namely of ikaruga and/or dynamite headdy? do you like weird, wacky, ultra unconventional games? do you like cutesy games with hidden dark sides? are you jonesin' for more import games to play on the sega saturn? if you answered yes to any of these questions, piraI MEAN LEGALLY OBTAIN THIS GAME anyway you can. don't bother with the american playstation port, as mentioned earlier working designs fucked with it's mechanics making it a chore to play and filled the script with outdated 90's references while simultaneously censoring the dicier content to get that sweet succulent E for everyone rating. it's not perfect, and it's not even the best treasure game on the saturn, but it's guaranteed to be a game unlike anything you've ever played.

i think he's silly and funny and sily and i like him

me and my friend talk abt how dragunov's movements are so surgical, rehearsed, precise. they have such windups but when they connect they hit fast like a gunshot (the sound design helps sm with this imagery)

ive felt this way for tk7 but i love how after grapples he usually has little tactical ways to get back up

the automatic, reflexive way he fights is so cool (and attractive?! goes without saying i feel this way), he just wants to dispose of his opponent and get on with it, he's all business..

his heat startup and new rage art animation feels that way too, the glove adjust and the growl.. he's like let's get this shit done with already !!..

his heat smash shoulder bash too phwee!! <3 he uses all his body parts in such a intentional way.. he knows where and how to hit and hits hard

pair this with how he acts outside of business, he's always lost in thought and humming and in his own world.. its emphasised especially in tk8. i still love how he was a bit more ruthless in tk5-7, but i'd like to think bc he's on vacation he's a little more chill. he still has cold intros and outros tho, i forget how chilling the camera stare is supposed to be because i just think its cool </3

i always liked gap moe in my favs so yippie!

he's insanely attractive even to nonfans for a character whose design motifs revolve around the living dead; pale skin, dark lips, half lidded milky eyes (but they shine so cutely), sharp skeletal features. despite that he looks extremely chiselled its crazy.. i forget how much of a beast he is compared to the other male characters (incredibly tall.. like a scarecrow [scaring birds...no wonder the ravens have such a tough time w him] and i think one of the heaviest characters in the game)

apart from a few (nonromantic) relationships i like to think he's very solitary, so i'm not too interested in a lot of ships w him, but i usually dont care too much abt that stuff. theres like one and thats it lol. i just like seeing him be really cool. i am crazy fond of self ships like player/character, but thats mainly self indulgent and disconnected from canon..

even tho bryan and victor are my favs i like.. am not interested in them interacting seriously with him. dragunov's like toooo cool headed to really pay attention to them. i will forever love the idea that the raven unit has such a hard time with him but he doesn't really know any of them, like when he sees them he just feels like 'oh, it's them again. back to work.' with bryan too i like to think bryan likes him as per the ttt2 implication? but then gets bored because he just dispatches people too quickly and moves on, haha. a little ankle biter. i dont think dragunov is a sadist to the extent he is.

speaking of victor, in their intro, theres a little surprised squeak when he rolls out of the way of the attack, im not sure which of the two are making that noise but if its dragu EEK its super cute.

i had such a hibernation period with sergei when tk7 started declining, the difference between tk8 and 7 is insane im happy it stoked my love for him again

ohh yea and one more thing my friends keep teasing me abt his intro in the story mode, whenever i land a grapple we always quote "and SQUEEEEEZES the life out of them"

in more silly thoughts, i think he gives great hugs. i think his core/chest is very warm but his arms and legs are cold. maybe.

I'm pretty new to closed species so obviously my opinion isn't worth much, but I was on Tumblr/other sites to look at art and characters of the CS's I'm interested in and came across this blog and others like it-- and drama happens everywhere so I'm not surprised a very online community like CSs/OCs/furries would have that -- but I AM suprised and kind of disgusted at seeing people complain about ... species creators being greedy? Personally, as someone who considered art as a lifelong career path but chose against it specifically for fear of financial instability, i really empathize with creators of CSs and other weird online art communities. maybe people who don't draw for a living can't imagine why someone would ask for $20+ to make a character in their created universe or pay $4000 for wips of a 100% custom design, or why people would be paying real money to buy characters that don't even have much art attached to them, because "YOU CAN JUST MAKE YOUR OWN", but that's not the point! the artists who have made these closed species have deliberately created an allure of exclusivity surrounding their CSs, yes, so that THEY CAN SELL THEIR ART! so that you, a user, doesn't go 'well I can just draw one of my own' but instead goes "wow, their art style and ideas are so lovely that I want to buy their work!" Like, these people are running businesses!!!!!!!!! that is literally the point!!!!!!! and seeing people complain that they're charging "too much" or are "too exclusive" for online pictures of cute animals/people/furries/hybrids/WHATEVER is just honestly so silly. it's a game! it's a luxury! it's out of your budget, yes, but shouldn't you be happy for an independent artist who has managed to create such a large community of fans around their work that they have the ability to sell their custom art for hundreds of dollars? that they can feel like the craft they've dedicated their life to perfecting is worth selling for that much? like, that's going to pay their bills!!!! come on!!!! don't be silly, guys. anyway I can understand the frustration if you can't get in on the CS's you want to be a part of or are also struggling financially, but Im shocked to see people in the independent art community bashing artists for literally just being successful. grow up!!!! 🐇

Hellooooo SSOblr. It me again. Just in time for Halloween! The idea was thrown around at the last meetup, so I’ve decided why not another meet, this time at the keep?

The theme for this will be masquerade! Dress your MC up, or don’t, it’s your choice! Costumes, masks, something that’s been in your storage and you’ve been waiting for a chance to wear it, anything goes. Bring a Halloween horse if you have one! Now, details.

I feel like if some people do that it's probably also influenced by the fact that this is to a degree a self insert medium and there seems to just naturally be a kind of spectrum in spaces like that from people making listener characters complete original characters very different from themself to someone giving only their favorites/the ones they related to similarities to themself to others who just straight up self insert 100% into all/most listeners even in their own art and when the artist is white/afab/a girl/women then well... there you go i guess

this also made me think of my own mental image of some of the characters erik voices and also something yuurivoice has said (whos original characters all have official art/designs) when people were asking about all his ocs being white and he replied he would feel weird/be concerned about him being white and then making characters he voices pocs and idk that just flashed back into my brain whenever i imagined some of the redacted characters as poc

but it's true there are still problems of this kind in most/all kinds of fandoms i just feel like on some level the fact that half the characters can be basically self inserts and the other half are all voiced by one white dude could influence these things even more, not saying it's an excuse, just some thoughts i had about this myself for a while now

I think ppl are starting to misunderstand what I said given it was just kinda vague and i didn’t expect it really to get much attention, but ladies and gentlemen I wasn’t talking about self inserts. I understand, I know there are gonna be creations of the listeners who are light-skinned and afab from ppl who are the same bc well, they are self inserts. Thats not what I was talking about though, at least a lot of self inserts feel unique to a degree bc ppl aren’t afraid to put their flaws in their inserts. Im talking about ppl who make the designs of the listeners and actively choose to make them white and or afab bc its mainstream or the only way to make a character due to white = better/standard for characters

But Im not trying to bash self inserts, its okay if your self insert is light-skinned and or afab just like you, there is nothing to be ashamed about that. Its when people simply create characters to be white bc lighter skinned is seen as the only ‘ideal’ version you’d want of any type of media with characters

it genuinely makes me kinda sad though. because i see people bashing on more modern paper mario games and yes, theyre right for the most part... but in saying "modern", theyre including the origami king in there.

the origami king was and still is a game i prefer over super paper mario. i just... think the story is better? its victim to bad character design but thats not necessarily the games fault. its the era it was made in's fault.

i cant really say why i prefer it better. sure, the plot is a bit silly with the main villain wanting to eradicate all toads because his father drew on him. but like... it kinda hits home for me in a way?

hits home because i have a very specific memory as a child. my mother looked through my sketchbook once, and saw a bit of art i did. the sketchbook was barely filled, mind you, but she still saw some stuff.

im getting off topic though. at the end of the sketches, she wrote a note in my beloved book. something along the lines about how she loves me and such.

that sound familiar? same thing got written on olly. so yeah, i get his frustration to an extent. that was literally his own body.

so yeah. along with other elements of the game, i think that plot element hitting home for me put it above super paper mario.

its funny that, me, a person who loves stories where the world is threatening to end and the tragedy that comes with the fact, didnt really like that element of the story in super paper mario.

i like count bleck. i like mr l. i like how silly the characters are in general. i like some of the plot beats, like that one time where you go to that one lizard fucks house thats covered in weeb shit. i like how heartfelt some elements are. i like that time where you were too late to save that one world. i like how you literally die and go to hell.

but i dont really like tippi and count blecks love story. which is weird, because ive seen stories like that in situations like these before.

i want to like it, because a ton of people say its good, but.

so ill take some time to tell any newbies some fandom veteran unspoken rules or just remind people of things

There is not "wrong" versions of the egos!!! There are a million and one designs a for every ego depending on the blog, artist, writer etc. Every marvin looks like a wildly different character and people have their own headcannon personalities, genders, orientations and more for every ego. Some people have multiple aus and characters intertwined. So dont go telling anyone their version of the egos is incorrect or not accurate because these characters have been up for interpretation for a VERY long time so please remember that. If you dont like someones version of the egos or its not accurate to whatever cannon comes out, shut the fuck up and leave the one who created that version of said egos alone. All your ego designs are valid and creative and fantastic and dont drop them just for the cannon if you dont want to.

Ego shipping is fine! So far we have had no cannon confirmation to say that theyre siblings, the same person, or related in any way that would make ego shipping wrong. If that becomes the case, most people with either drop it or actively start making the egos their new OCs to continue shipping their personalities and designs. however, if that doesnt happen, dont bash people for shipping the egos. The sanders sides fandom and markiplier fandom get along just fine shipping characters played by the same guy so just be less judgy if you feel the need to tell people you dont like what they like. And if you really dont like it, its not that hard to just block an artist or ask them to tag their ship art and filter the tag. Its really not that deep so dont go sending anon hate to people for shipping the egos.

Dont be fucking rude. End of. Just dont be rude. If you dont like a blogs interpretation of the egos, just block them. Its not that hard. Be. Nice. Most of us are, but theres some bad apples so please dont be one of them and support artists and writters and editors you like and ignore others.

Ego cosplayers are fine and some of them are really cool and talented people so leave then alone with your hate. If you think theyre cringe, dont interact with their content. Sean has stated he likes them and/or apreciates their skills so dont send ego cosplayers hate. Support their talents god damnit.

Reblog, for the love of god reblog. We arent as big a fandom as we were and we have some serious talent in here. @leobashi @d-structive @tracobuttons @mythicalitycosplay @soopticboop @koryabeebee to name a few. And their content gets nowehere without reblogs. This isnt tiktok, therers no algorithm and liking does essentially nothing so boost content when you see it to make sure our artists remain motivated and adored as they deserve.

Share your content! We love to aee it and theres a criminally low amount of jse content on tumblr these days so give us all of it.

Robbie is a non canon ego and dont bash people for him being their favourite, hes great and hes flexible, being non cannon. Dont get angry for people putting him in the main tag because he is pretty much a part of it all and has been for a while, trust me id know.

Dadzawa, Momnight? I’m curious, I haven’t really heard much of your specific thoughts on those two

oh boy yeah i have Thoughts but its gonna be a little long

Dadzawa- ranges anywhere from 2/10 - 11/10. I think its usually at about a 7/10 for me, and really depends on the kid he’s dad-ing. I like izuku, but i dont like it when it turns into All Might bashing, which is. frequent. i think he’s a good dad figure for izuku, but not the best. a very fun older brother figure though, love brozawa. For other characters, esp Hitoshi and Eri, its great. i often think about how hitoshi and eri can both be written with ‘choice’ bc they were the kids he picked, not assigned to his class. I do also think he’s the best of the possible dad figures for Bakugo, and really fun when people branch out and pick like, Uraraka or Ojiro or such to focus on with him.

Momnight- ah. *avoids eye contact* I don’t really like Midnight. in canon, she’s a 0/10. why must she continue about how her students turn her on. A very bad thing to have in a teacher and a horrible example of bdsm. im almost offended, honestly, with how she’s the only woman teacher at the school. (im still assuming Thirteen is NB, what with she/her and he/him being used in official translations and light novels.) Her fanon self is better, 5/10, but i'm neutral on her and not really sure how she came to be? also what is modern hero art history. Not my least favorite heroine to make a mom, but not my favorite either.

that said, flashback to high school midnight is a solid 9/10, she had spunk and was friendly and deserved better, and my personal version of her for my ageswap story is 10/10 bc i literally designed her to be what i actually wanted to see in her,,, and  the weaponized gaydar line is still my best work.

I Have Too Many Opinions. ep. 1

lmao. i got encouragement to post my opinions on fandom things and now i want to make a miniseries doing just that. so here i am. doing just that.

im putting it under the cut cuz this was 4 whole pages including the disclaimer. yes i put a disclaimer and i explain why.

Anyways, here is the first piece in what inevitably will become fandom info dump, this time on thomas astruc’s writing on miraculous ladybug. but only some of my opinions cuz we would be here all day otherwise.

So… a disclaimer before I begin… 

I do not hate Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir (yes i'm using their government name). I am quite a fan of the show actually despite its faults. I am also older than the intended audience but was obviously younger when the show first aired which is how my interest was piqued (the fact that its been 6 years and only 3 seasons says more about the show than me being a fan for that amount of time but also i never want to rush content creators cuz they're doing their best) and due to my age, there will be inherent bias in my approach of what i'm about to say as there is in EVERY opinion. The fact that it is an opinion should imply the presence of bias but most people tend to lack the critical thinking skills required to draw that conclusion ANYWAYS…

If I did hate the show I would not have this blog nor would I be even writing this because i tend to not give more than 2 seconds of thought to things i actively dislike (some of yall should give this a try) and i'm allowed to like things that are designed for an audience that i was originally a part of but grew out of. (I don't suddenly stop liking things because I'm older despite what many younger fans seem to believe about older audiences. I also don't need to be ‘allowed’ to do anything cuz i wasn't asking for permission anyways.)

This will not be character bashing, astruc bashing nor fandom bashing cuz, again, that would imply i hate any of those elements and if i did, i would not dedicate brainpower to them. Analyses and criticisms of media are fun and engaging and required if you wish to produce good enjoyable content. Now most of this should be already assumed and self-explanatory but people on the internet like to play morality roulette roll dice on purity culture and I rather have documentation that I am in fact not bullying fictional 14 year olds or a grown man. But alas, people get trigger happy whenever someone has less than 1000000% positive opinions on something they like and will throw out words they can't define (gaslight, baiting, toxic, problematic, gatekeep etc) in an attempt to defend their blind devotion, 

which is not needed, if you like something you never have to defend it, even if i don't like it. If you respond to anything I post saying you disagree with me, I will not argue with you. I won't debate back and forth and try to convince you that the things you like are wrong. Unless you are being absolutely tone deaf to what i'm saying, you wont get a negative reaction from me. So don't try to fish for a fight. Please. I got metaphorical hands for days and I'm mean, you don't want me hurting your feelings on the internet. Do yourself the favour. Difference of opinion is how we get diversification in media and is inherently a good thing. Now that that's out of the way, please don't ever let me have to say that again. I beg.

Now onto the fun stuff

I didn't know what I wanted as a first topic so my trusty internet friend @moonlitceleste suggested astruc’s writing… 

AND BOI do i got some opinions on ole tommy boi. Again I don't hate the dude. In fact, he has worked on a few shows that had defined my childhood, including but not limited to W.I.T.C.H. (all eps available on youtube for those interested, 2 seasons, general fun time all around).

So I don't think he’s scum of the earth but I do think his approach to writing mlb specifically has more misses than hits.

The first big miss is that he has no idea how to write 14 year old girls. At all. Almost every girl he has ever written feels like some terrible archetype built entirely for marketability and childish projection and pubescent self-insert (kind of). He has never been a 14 year old girl. I have. In fact when the show first aired, I WAS around the (assumed) age of the mlb characters. The behaviour he passes off as quirky or awkward or just the character’s genuine personality tend to perpetuate harmful stereotypes of teen girls found in the media and are never actually addressed as harmful. they just get swept under the rug. Marinette’s exuberant collage of teen heart throb model boi Adrien Agreste and her very painful almost fan worship she has of him (which flip flops like a paper sandal in the rain) being portrayed as a cute school girl crush uwu, Chloe being the y7 Regina George, Alya being the token best friend of colour with her ‘sassy’ personality (i want y'all to imagine me eyerolling so hard i bust a vessel in my eye), Kagami being the very damaging Perfect Asian Child stereotype. And before y'all get on your dusty soap box and defend going on about “BUT IT'S FOR CHILDREN”,,,, know this.

 i don’t give a solid fuck. 

Not one. 

Children arent stupid. Children are always going to remember the richy bitchy blonde who bullies the art kid, and the big kid, and the shy kid, and the non white kids, and was only nice to her equally rich white friend who she probably had a crush on or was only ever civil to her equally white lapdog. They're going to remember the half asian girl who was never allowed to actually be asian or the only black girl who existed solely as a soundboard for enabling bad habits or chastising the main character for the same habits she enables in the first place (boi aint THAT a topic for later). Like do i really need to explain that alya chastising marinette for taking max’s spot in gamer just to play with adrien rings absolutely hollow when she actively encourages her to sabotage the contest she’s in just so Kagami doesn't win?? Like I don't have to explain that right?? Again kids arent stupid and its quite something that Mari gets chastised for proving herself the best video game player regardless of her intentions just cuz it comes at the expense of max’s feelings/ego but is actively encouraged to sabotage not only kagami but herself by extension cuz kagami is ‘competition.’ Adrien is not a trophy to be won. And no I don't expect 14 yrs old to be perfect and to always make good decisions but these decisions are never addressed as being bad decisions. they get swept under the rug cuz those decisions were necessary for the ‘plot’ but astruc can barely keep characterization consistent and his characters suffer for it and it's the same children you preach are watching it that suffer as well. Cuz guess what? I KNOW 14 yr olds aren't like that cuz i've been there done that (this is the last time i'm saying that i promise) so I know astruc is just metaphorically throwing darts to figure out who says and does what without consideration for pre established personalities to drive the stalemate plot along. The same kids you say are watching this don't know that that's not how preteens work and will absorb and internalize those dynamics like baking soda and vinegar. Cata-fucking-strophically. 

And I haven't even gotten to the boys yet. Which honestly doesn't require much explanation anyways cuz they suffer the same fate as the girls. Tired archetypes with nothing to give them life. Nino falls into Adrien’s person of colour token best friend who dates the female lead’s person of colour token best friend so they can have cute double dates uwu. Except the plot goes nowhere and we have no inclination of romantic development beyond moments that only act to actively convince me to anti ship the lovesquare (i don't want to do that so i self indulge in fanon that actually cares about the characters and plot. may i interest you in True Sight on AO3?). Max is the residential nerd but it doesn't matter (cuz he and everyone are dumbed down for the sake of ‘plot’), kim is the sports jock (which interestingly subverts the asian comedic relief stereotype but only barely) and luka is cute older guy ™ that wears black nail polish and is in a band. The point of all this is to say there is no depth in the characters. It's especially blatantly obvious with the characters astruc doesn't like (chloe). Again, it being a show for kids is not an excuse to be absolved of putting effort into the characters you make.

This is one of the biggest misses astruc has. I haven't even gone into all the nuances of this particular miss. And i havent gone into how that works against him in the plot either. Mostly because the plot itself hasn't gone anywhere and partially because I wanted to go into the plot (or lack thereof) separately as its own miss. 

AND BOI is it a miss. 

SO home boy astruc wanted to reap the benefits of a serial show with ‘engaging’ plot without putting in any of the work to make a linear storyline and relying on the episodic format for, again, marketability. You can't have the best of both worlds, you are not Avatar: The Last Airbender. Which btw has a lot less episodes and a desired end goal that didn't involve top dollar. Legend of Korra did but that's not the point and it had its failings with that too. I challenge you, tell me how many episodes actually contribute towards a plot point or introduce new thematic elements to the show? Can you name them? I can and I'm going to include the plot points that moved the story in some direction if only temporarily. Yes only temporarily for some of these and i will explain later. (if you're in the server you already saw this list *wink*)

25/26. Origins- self explanatory, the beginning of the story, 

24. Volpina- introduction of the grimoire and Master Fu (kind of) and no, Lila is not a plot point,

28. The Collector- proper introduction of Master Fu,

37. Sapotis- introduction of Rena Rouge,

41. Syren- introduction of new aquatic power ups,

44. Anansi- introduction of Carapace,

47. Frozer- introduction of new ice power ups,

48/49. Style Queen- introduction of Queen Bee,

51/52. Heroes’ Day- introduction of Mayura and mass akumatization,

66. Startrain- introduction of Pegasus,

67. Kwami Buster- Marinette wears multiple miraculouses,

68. Feast- backstory as to how the miraculouses were lost,

69. Ikari Gozen- introduction of Ryuko,

70. Timetagger- introduction of Bunnyx,

71. Party Crasher- introduction of Roi Singe and Viperion,

73. Chat Blanc- alternate timeline that essentially means nothing but got a reaction out of fans anyways (myself included)

 77/78. Love Eater/Battle of Miraculous- Marinette becomes guardian and other heroes lose their miraculous,

New York Special- other heroes exist and there is an American miraculous box,

That's 21 episodes. 21 out of a heaping 78 plus 2 specials. Everything else was just your typical akuma of the day episode and everything that happened outside that had no lasting consequences on the plot thanks to the miraculous status quo. Was it entertaining to watch Lila stir the plot of the class dynamic? Hell yeah. Too bad it meant nothing by the end of the episode cuz we were struck with miraculous status quo. She literally doesn't appear again until Heroes Day. that is from episodes 25 all the way to 51, she means nothing and yet she is treated with the severity of a b-villain/rival thing. She means nothing by the end of Volpina if I'm being honest. She is only relevant for 20 mins of episode time she’s in then it's back to magic status quo that undoes any shift in dynamics and relationships. It's like Spongebob who can't get his driver’s license. The worst part is I actually like Lila and I wish the story treated her with the seriousness we as an audience are expected to treat her with. Despite being painfully inconsequential by the end of each of the 3?? 4?? episodes she’s in, it's entertaining to watch a character create drama just because. 

Too bad it means nothing.

Astruc is constantly building up suspense to something ‘important’ only for it to not deliver and fans are constantly having the rug pulled out from under us. Oblivio teased us with a reveal only that gets undone cuz memory akuma. Chat Blanc teased us with romantic development but that gets undone cuz time travel bullshit. Feast introduced more miraculous lore and the history of the guardians but that means nothing by the next episode or ever (i'm not including any reference to the season 4 trailer cuz i've been around the block a few times and im familiar with this lil dancy dance). Heroes Day teased us with a possible future team of heroes but that gets undone in Battle of Miraculous cuz ????? why?? (here's why; astruc was having a jolly ole time letting us know how irredeemable Chloe is at the expense of shooting his own stagnant plot in the foot. Again, discussion for later.)

Too bad anything that slightly swerves off course from the akuma of the day gets undone or ignored. Too bad nothing has any lasting consequence. I mean, if anything did, the episodes would have had a consistent order and release schedule so im not scrambling to watch the leaked ep in Portuguese or something while the french dub is two episodes behind while the english version hasnt even been dubbed. I really wonder how he plans to conclude the show when he’s so afraid to step out of the corner he painted himself in.

Again, not going into nuances. If you want you can ask for more specifics (i doubt anyone would) but this is really just a slightly detailed general overview of my opinions on astruc’s writing. 

I was going to include another miss in his approach to this show but imma save that for another time.
