Anyways this week is PKNA #0.2 here we gooo- THIS POST IS REALLY LONG SO OPEN AT YOUR OWN RISK

OK so I'm running a bit of an experiment this week - which is to say that in between this week and last week's reading I bought all the English copies of PKNA that exist (there's only 6) and I know the official translations took more creative liberties than the fan translations (which from what I understand are more direct) SO I'll be reading both a physical official English copy of this chapter AND pulling up the fan translation at the same time to compare and contrast noticeable differences in dialogue. Also that's why some of the photos will be screenshots and some will just be me taking actual photos of a comic book lol.

Right off the bat the official English has Scrooge calling Donald a muttonhead which I think is the superior insult here. Also he gets fancy red text in this panel

All of Uno's text is green as well, which is a fun touch! (It's subtle on camera just trust me on this one)

This is also the ONLY coloring difference I've noticed so far, which is that the bullets are now yellow instead of blue. Is that supposed to mean they're tranquilizer bullets??? Is it somehow less violent if the bullets are yellow now??? What are they, banana flavored??? Idk

I don't know if I'm gonna do the comparison thing for the upcoming 4 issues cause this took me like 2 hours to make this post lol (also I hit the image limit and had to combine a bunch of them into one). The major difference between the dialogues I noticed is that the official dialogue is a lot more flamboyant with its language (and Donald says a lot more insults). They also snuck in a few more pop culture references.

Duck Comic Reading Club Week 2

A bit late, but I finally read this week comic. It was a really good issue with a great villain introduction.

First, this cover looks so good. This how you put your villain in his debut, big on the cover, facing the hero.

And talking about Raider… I really like him. His design, abilities, and powers make him really cool. But I really feel that his first appearance is weak. Yeah, he needs the box, but making it the first thing your new bad guy needs is weird. The moment when he steals the truck, that should have been his debut in the story.

Sadly, I already knew Lyla was a robot, but the way the comic hints her real self, is really cool. She discovered PK identity easy.

At this point, I was thinking, this guy can exist outside time, how the hell is PK going to stop him?

I'm telling you, Raider is pretty cool.

And he's also clever. Using Fangus in his favor, good plan. Speaking of Fangus, the guy is a jerk worst than Gladstone.

Back to the good stuff, Lyla's story is other high point. I really like the concept of the Time Police and how they got through all mankind history in order to see that everything go as it should.

What I didn't like that much is the ending.

There's no way Raider didn't know about the eye of the storm. But well, I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Raider. No way someone as cool as him is going to be use in one issue.

Good issue, we had another threat for our hero and the world is expanding. Looking forward for the next one.

im reading this when i should probably be taking a nap, so i do not apologize if i sound very sleepy

... okay girl what do you know.....

this is such a good face. very good donald panel.

who is the color artist for PK why are there so many characters with bright pink??

this is a very well drawn panel and hatching/composition aside. how many floors does Ducklair have? because im assumig this isn't part of the 101 floors donald counted (i hope theres inter-city tunnels for quick travel or something i would love that)

not censoring angus bc this is a #real momment. also aww look at that scrooge :) hes so happy

okay i loveee this composition. the bottom panel basically being a full page spread is really cool (the white is probably mainly just for bleed space)

the hatching on this comic is really good so far! and coloring wise i think i feel like its strongest when it has funky lighting like in the last panel. like the purple here:

im sure the normal scenes will grow on me, but for right now some of the character's neutral colors clash a bit with the background for me

ok sorry my art brain is always on but like. first off this Flow is really interesting because i think most people would probably avoid that middle section where theres "sharp" turns (and personally, donald feels a little squished)

i was going to say wow this penguin guy looks sick i wonder if he's an actual charcter and then i realized the big metal thing is NOT armor that is their WEAPON and i am more dsappointed but yknow what sure. we need more penguin representation in duck.verse aside from those fuck ass penguins (referring to tus.kernini's penguins)

i would also like to note that the italian sound effects are very funny. i am told there is a SPAM later in the comic and i would like to see that come to fruition

DCRC Week #31

Only 2 weeks into the semester and school is already beating my ass, but you know who always has my back? That's right baby. Paperinik. New. Adventures. Always there for me when nobody else is.

Anyways um today is PKNA #26: Time Flies which is a fun and normal adventure chapter with absolutely no existential commentary on the nature of art whatsoever.

THAT'S RIGHT, WHAT YOU JUST READ FOR THE LAST 60 PAGES WAS ACTUALLY A SERIES OF AI GENERATED SLOP FROM THE YEAR 2255!!! FUCK YOU

Oh.

OKAY SO. Obviously the biggest hit of this chapter comes at the very end, when it's revealed that the entire story we've been following wasn't actually real, and this whole time we've just been reading an episode of a TV show that was entirely computer-generated. Of course, this comic was still made by real artists, because the technology to AI generate photos didn't exist all the way back in 1999 (thank god).

Had I read this comic maybe 4, 5 years ago, I would've probably just been like "oh huh. that's neat." and moved on. But reading this story now, in the year 2025??? Holy shit dude. The accuracy with which they approach the topic of AI art in this story is lowkey terrifying. You're telling me that Ducklas fucking Styvesant can grasp the concept of why AI art would be wrong in the year 1999, and we somehow have people in MODERN DAY that can't grasp why people are against it? 😭

This is another one of those scenarios where you read sci-fi media from the past that's exploring some kind of existential threat, in this case the existence of entirely machine-generated "art", and it's explored as some kind of scary far off "what if" scenario, but yet again we're brought face to face with the fact that this is actually happening NOW. Like NOW now. This comic predicted that computer generated shows would be a newly emerging technology in 2255, that makes us almost 230 years ahead of schedule in the real world. AND I THINK THAT'S FUCKIN CRAZY!!!!

If we're gonna go the route of making all the sci-fi horrors of PKNA into real world things can we at least get an Uno first? I would much prefer him existing over the AI slop that's all over google images now, thanks xoxo.

DCRC Week #16

Wiggity what's up my fellow book clubbers, today we're taking a look at the ethics of treating artificially made intelligent lifeforms as second class citizens and what the qualifying factors are to determine a being as truly "sentient" and deserving of basic social rights. And by that I mean we're reading PKNA #12: Second Draft which is a comic where nothing bad happens!

Ok so bad news, Geena fucking exploded and her droid rebellion is presumably over. The GOOD news though is that droids are destined to get their rights anyways, just in a less violent manor than in the timeline Geena had started. So... I guess that's a win?

Okay so there's a LOT to say about this comic (so much that I kept hitting the image limit and having to make edits to my post to make it more concise) but if I could summarize it into one word: damn. Like I'm just kinda sad now.

The whole concept of "do robots deserve to be treated like human beings" is a common argument to explore, we've seen it in all kinds of media before. The ethics that get touched on in this comic are nothing new, but I can't help but find this comic incredibly interesting to read in the year 2024. Maybe in 1997 the idea of robots integrating into our society seemed like a far-off concept, but in present day the ever-growing integration of AI technology really makes this chapter feel a little more close to home.

I mean, it's easy to be like "yeah, well of course the droids deserve to be treated like people." I mean, Lyla and Odin are droids, and we like Lyla and Odin! Odin is literally so lifelike that people don't even KNOW he's a droid. But I can't help but think about how this all ties back to the current ongoing debates surrounding the usage of AI, and specifically AI-made content. Obviously the AI we currently have is nowhere near the level of the characters in this series (chatGPT fucking WISHES it was Uno) but there's really interesting debates to be made here.

What qualifying factors determine whether or not a living being is deserving of the same rights we humans give to ourselves? Is it being biological? I mean, there are literally millions of types of animals on our planet, but we don't even treat them with the same level of respect we give to ourselves. So, is it intelligence? If we were to create a computer with the intelligence level of a living, breathing human person, would they be entitled to basic "human" rights? HELL IF I KNOW.

I love the way this comic handles exploring this topic. Geena isn't WRONG for wanting more, she's wrong in the way she went about it. Going as far as to literally alter the course of spacetime only further complicated things, for her AND for the other droids. Had Geena instead devoted her energy into droid advocacy in the modern day, things may have gone differently. This story isn't the end of droids getting rights, but it is unfortunately the end of Geena.

We ended on a happy note, but overall this story is a pretty melancholic one. Especially that whole "only machines can be rebuilt" like DAMN.

Anyways that's enough media analysis for today, time to take off my smart thinking hat and go back to being generally kinda stupid. I'm not gonna add anything about Angus Tales here at the end because I already hit the image limit lol. Umm shoutout to Angus Fangus for having like 110 parking tickets. Idiot.

DCRC Week #20 (Part 2)

Aight folks strap in cause now we're reading another spooOoOky story for the week of Halloween! yes I know it's november 4th now It's time for The Old Castle's Secret by, you guessed it, CARL MOTHAFUCKIN BARKS!!!! This also happens to be the second ever story Scrooge appeared in so heyyy a little bit of duck history today as well

Interesting to note here that Scrooge is already described as being rich, but apparently not millions of dollars rich, at least until he gets his hands on his family's huge stash of hidden treasure. What humble beginnings for a man who goes on to spend his time swimming around in gold coins <3

Ok so shoutout to this comic for giving Scrooge a gun and having him decide to shoot bullets at a ghost (stupid in theory but I guess it worked out cause it wasn't a real ghost but imagine if he just actually killed the guy, that would've been a bruh) and also congratulations to Scrooge for adding another billion dollars to his fortune! I love watching the rich get richer!!!!!
