Allah’s name Al-Mushin— The Good Doer, the one who does ultimate good— is not mentioned in the Quran but occurs in narrations of the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Al-Muhsin is the one who loves and inspires doing good in His slaves and who possesses the perfect good and excellence in all He makes happen!
The Good Doer, the Supreme Doer of Good
Muhsin comes from the root haa-seen-noon, which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to be and to do good and to pursue excellence The second main meaning is to be beautiful, and the third is to be kind. The fourth main meaning is to be suitable, proper, and fitting.
This root appears 194 times in the Quran in 12 derived forms. Examples of these forms are ahsana (“does good”), ahsanu (“is best”), husnan (“good”) and al-muhsineena (“the good doers”).
Linguistically, hasana is the root for the words hasan (good), ahsan (better), and (al) husna (the best). The Islamic concept of ihsaan, or excellence, comes from the same root. A muhsin (male, plural muhsineen) and a muhsina (female, plural muhsinaat) are those who do good and who when saying someone did well, can say: ahsant (-i or –a), which means “well done” or “excellent!”
Al-Muhsin refers to the One who is perfectly good in His Essence and who does all His actions in the best possible manner, achieving excellence and reaching ultimate beauty and perfection.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Surely Allah is Muhsin and He loves ihsaan in everything; if you kill, kill in a good way and if you slaughtered, slaughter in a good way . . . [part of the hadith- At-Tabaraani and Al-Albaani, Saheeh Al-Jami]
Islam, emaan, and ihsaan
There are three degrees of Islam, which are Islam, eemaan, and ihsaan. Islam means submission, and when mentioned separately from emaan it refers to the religion as a whole, as Allah says: Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. [Quran, 3:19] When Islam is used with the word eemaan (faith or belief) it refers to outward deeds and words, as Allah says: The bedouins say: ‘We believe. Say: You believe not but you only say, We have surrendered (in Islam), for Faith has not yet entered your hearts…’ [Quran, 49:14]
The second degree is eeman, which means belief committed to submission and may mean one of two things. When it is used without the word “Islam,” it refers to the religion as a whole, as Allah ‘azza wa jall says: Allah is the Wali of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. [Quran, 2:257]
Allah limited the word emaan to those who adhere to His religion in full, inwardly and outwardly, as He says: The believers are only those who, when Allaah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses are recited unto them, they increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord. [Quran, 8:2] When emaan is used with the word Islam it refers to inward beliefs, or the actions of the heart.
Thus, when either emaan or Islam are used alone, there is no difference and they both refer to the entire religion. If there is any difference between them, Islam refers to outward physical actions and the word eemaan refers to inward actions of the heart.
The third degree is ihsaan, which in Arabic means doing something well, perfectly, and sincerely. Islamically it may mean two things: when used alone and not with Islam or eemaan it refers to the religion as a whole.
When it is used with either or both Islam and eemaan the meaning is perfecting one’s outward and inward deeds. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam beautifully explained the meaning of ihsaan: It means worshipping Allah as if you can see Him, and although you cannot see Him, He can see you. [Al-Bukhaari, Muslim]
How can you live by this name?
1. Strive for ihsaan.
Ihsaan is a complete way of life, so let this concept accompany you in all your actions. Strive for al-ihsaan in your relationship with Allah ‘azza wa jall as in being able to worship Him as if you saw Him and strive for al-ihsaan as good behaviour to others, like kindness to your parents, relatives, the poor etc.
When you have a guest, give them the best you have. When you are with your parents, show them the best of your manners. Also appreciate the ihsaan of others.
Strive for al-ihsaan as an act of excellence and in your relationship with yourself, meaning in every deed you do, you try your best! When you are at your job, do your best, when you are at school, try your best. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Allah has prescribed al-ihsaan in every matter. [Muslim] SubhanAllah, we are even asked as Muslims to sharpen the knife when we slaughter as to cause minimal distress to the animal.
2. Study the Quran to find out what is good.
On many occasions in the Quran the muhsineen, the good doers, are mentioned. The muhsineen are loved by Allah ‘azza wa jall and close to Him and Allah even describes actions characterizing them, pay special attention to these ayaat. Allah says: And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good (muhsin) – then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold . . .[Quran, 31:22]
Make it your mission to find out what the Quran says about what are good deeds and what their reward is, so you can apply them and become of the muhsineen inshaa’Allah!
3. Realize that Allah’s ways are excellent.
Allah is the only true Mushin. He is perfect in His Names, attributes, and actions. Truly realize that everything Allah ‘azza wa jall gives and takes from you, is for your own good, and let this inspire you to complain less and start being more content. Allah’s ihsaan is general with the whole creation; He created you in a perfect way without being asked and His ihsaan is specific. He rewards the good doers with the place of ultimate good: His Paradise!
4. Ask Al-Muhsin.
Allah ‘azza wa jall says in a heart-melting ayah in Surah Ar-Rahmaan: Hal jazaa’ul ihsaani illal-ihsaan – Is the reward for good [anything] but good? [Quran, 55:60] Each day ask Al-Mushin for ihsaan in all aspects of your life, in your inward and outward actions. Do you worship Allah as if you see him or at least as he sees you? Ask Him to bless you with the highest degree of ihsaan: apart from being aware He sees you, worshipping Him as if you see Him!
5. Study the names of Allah.
The beautiful names of Allah are called al asmaa ul husnaa. Study them and most importantly, live by them. https://understandquran.com/99-names-of-allah-asma-ul-husna
O Allah, Al-Mushin, we know that You are Doer of ultimate good. Adorn us with ihsaan in all our aspects of life and make us worship you as if we see You. Include us in the rewards of the muhsineen and make us live by the fact You are perfect and beyond excellence in Your dealings with us. Bless us with good in this life and the ultimate good in the Hereafter, seeing You in Paradise, ameen!
And Allah knows best.

Good akhlaaq and showing ihsaan are not just limited towards people, but towards animals as well.
So please don't place your pets in harm's way for the sake of making social media content. Don't put two aggressive pets together, or let them drink your soda / coffee, or put "makeup" on them. I've seen infuriating content of people recording two hostile pet cats in close proximity because “funny”. Not only is it straight up cruel and dangerous, but you will be asked and will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment.

Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. May He place beauty in every aspect of our lives, from who we are as people, to the way we see the world, to the way we interact with it.
The power of a Muslim comes in the way they act despite what happens around them. The closer you are to Allah, the more you will find yourself consciously choosing to act in a way that reflects that awareness of Allah’s nearness to You. This is ihsaan. You will always want to act in a way that Allah would find beautiful. You will hold yourself to account, choosing to speak & act with beauty & elegance, seeking Allah’s pleasure.
The more disconnected you are from Allah, the less mindful you are of your actions. If you find yourself growing less kind to those around you, remind yourself of Allah’s nearness to you so that you may regain that intentionality in the way you behave.
When you want to act in a way that encapsulates the beauty of our Prophet ﷺ’s teachings and akhlaaq, you will choose to bring beauty into any interaction, even when it is difficult. You will notice it takes great strength to be gentle when others express their strength through aggression, and to choose to build bridges when others tear them down. You will develop greater patience and choose to see the good in others, for one who loves Allah sees good in everything. You will choose to be the light in every difficult situation, expressing it in your words, tone, and even the decision to smile, because you represent something greater than yourself. You represent something that deserves to be represented with beauty and grace.
You can do so not expecting anything in return, because your reward comes from Allah. You don’t need your kindness to be reciprocated.
Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I not tell you upon whom the Hellfire is forbidden tomorrow? It is everyone gentle, lenient, accessible, and easy-going.”
There is a reason why Hell has been forbidden for those who are gentle. It takes great consciousness of Allah. May we act with excellence and gentleness, and dress our mannerisms with elegance and beauty, so that others may see the beauty of Islam in the way we treat them 🌸

Truth to be told I envy how religious you are. I'm Catholic, and while I do believe God is real, my relationship with him is rocky. My life has been so unpleasant that I can't believe God loves me, while even when you're sad you know Allah loves you. I wish I was like that…
(confess something you've thought about me on anon!)
Hey, if it makes you feel any better, for all my unbridled honesty I try not to talk too much about my own religious struggles on here, so it's easy to not get the full picture. I tend not to because many anti-theists (like any predatory religious group) will prey on your insecurities and emotions to manipulate you into "joining" them, and I have spent so much of my life being told I need to leave Islam if I want to assimilate that I just can't be bothered dealing with that here, too.
But I actually have to go to Islamic counselling for my own trauma from the behaviour of the post-9/11 ummah and my relationship with Allah, and it's definitely not as simple as just "knowing" Allah loves me. What I do earnestly believe in 100% of the time is that Islam is true; I can't describe it, it's just in the same way I know (most of) what scientists tell us is as true as it can be with the knowledge we have. Sometimes that makes it even harder; I can't leave Islam for the emotional reprieve of not being beholden to Allah and the sharia' because I'd be willingly ignoring facts for my own deluded bliss and it wouldn't actually make me feel better. Disclosing our haraam acts is also discouraged in Islam so I don't talk about it when I do them, but I'm certainly no exemplary mu'min either. I break a lot of rules and I mean a lot, to make a futile point to Allah I think. Akin to a 13 year old who's mad at his mum and breaks a window. It just doesn't appear that way to a lot of people because I'm always following the "core" ones (I've never broken my fast or committed zina for example).
What I'm trying to say is that I struggle, as it would appear, with the exact same stuff you do. It's important to not value your own religiosity by the standards of others' outward behaviour. I can't speak for Catholicism, unfortunately, but in Islam we actually have three "levels" of Muslimness; ihsaan (excellence of character), imaan (genuine belief) and islam (the rules and religion for which the outside observer can identify us). Not everyone has all three even if you might assume that on the basis of their actions (islam).

‎لقد تذكرتك - وتمنيت لك السعادة
Sincerely,
Your Dear Anon
Ibn al-Qayyim said: "From the perfection of Allah's ihsaan (excellence and bounty) is that He allows His servant to taste the bitterness of the break before the sweetness of the mend. He does not break His believing servant except to mend him. And He does not withhold from him except to give to him. And He does not test him (with hardship), except to cure him."
Allah جل جلاله says: "if you are grateful, I will give you more and more." [Quran 14:7]
Dua during hardship:
Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was distressed he would recite:
‘La ilaha illalahul ‘Azimul Halim, La ilaha illallahu Rabbul ‘Arshil ‘Azim, La ilaha illallahu Rabbus Samawati Wa Rabbul Ardi Wa Rabbul ‘Arshil Karim’
There is no God but Allah, the magnificent, the forbearing. There is no God but Allah, lord of the glorious throne. There is no God but Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and lord of the glorious throne.
[Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6346 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2730]

“Why me? Why do I have to face difficulties one after another?”
Allah saved Yusuf AS from a sin. How? By sending him to prison.
Sometimes we’re faced with a difficulty. We don’t understand it. We see it as a punishment. But, it might be Allah’s protection from greater trouble.
We learn that Yusuf AS did Ihsaan (good) wherever he went. Yet, he faced trials one after another.
Yusuf AS was dumped by his brothers, sold off, ended up at Aziz Misr’s house. But, he learned a lot there. He got to look at the world from a different perspective, from a governor’s house, from their point of view.
When he went to prison, he lived among common men, the lower people, it was a different experience that was necessary for him to learn for what he was going to receive later in life.
Him being a prisoner wasn’t wasted. There was a learning for him in it.
So, when you’re left alone, when you’re faced with a trial, look through it. Find out what Allah is trying to teach you and don’t let it go to waste. Keep doing Ihsaan (good) and don’t lose hope in Allah. Allah does not put us through anything without any reason.
Whatever circumstances Yusuf AS faced did not stop him from doing good. As a result, Allah helped him at each step. His worth was revealed every time.
People sold him just for a few dirhams, but the man who purchased him saw good in him. He was sent to prison, but the people there found him Mohsin (a doer of good). It was his good doings that made him reach the king who had a dream.
Imagine if he had stopped doing good, stopped helping others when he was sent to prison. Imagine if he had given up on doing good when he was falsely accused and deprived of freedom.
He could have said, “Why me? Why am I being put in so many difficulties? Why am I in trouble when all I do is good?”
But he did not say that. He kept doing it. And it was his good that saved him.
He helped two fellow prisoners, and one of them mentioned him in front of the king, and that is how he got out of the prison.

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says:
🌺 ❛(1) Those who spend [in Allah’s Cause] in prosperity and in adversity, (2) who repress anger, and (3) who pardon men — verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun.❜ 【Surah Ali Imran 3:134】
🌺 And (4) those who, when they have committed faahishah or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins — and none can forgive sins but Allah — and do not persist in what [wrong] they have done while they know.❜ 【Surah Ali Imran 3:135】
This a famous paragraph in the Qur’an where Allah gives us the descriptions of al-Muttaqun, the people of taqwa:
🌿 (1) They spend in Allah’s cause during both easy and difficult times 🌿 (2) They suppress their anger 🌿 (3) They forgive others 🌿 (4) When they made an error, they immediately remember Allah and seek His forgiveness 🌿 (5) They do not persist in that sin
The first 3 characteristics refer to our dealing with others, while the last 2 refer to dealing with our own shortcomings. But notice that just after the third characteristic, Allah says: ❛Allah loves al-Muhsinun (the people of ihsaan / excellence).❜
A Muhsin is a person of ihsaan, of excellence, who goes beyond the call of duty solely to seek the rida of Allah.
You’re not sinful if you don’t spend in Allah’s cause when you yourself are in difficulty. You’re not sinful if you’re angry with someone who has mistreated you. You’re not sinful if you decide not to forgive someone who has wronged you.
But the one who helps someone else who’s in difficulty, even though he himself is in hardship is a muhsin. The one who suppresses his anger so much that people aren’t even aware of his anger is a muhsin. The one who can forgive others is a muhsin.
Being ihsaan towards people is often tiring, and often very difficult. So perhaps this is one of the reasons why Allah says right after: ❛Allah loves al-Muhsinun.❜ As if to say, yes it’s difficult to give, yes it’s difficult to suppress that anger, yes it’s difficult to forgive, but do it because you want to be a muhsin, do it because you want to be loved by Allah. And what greater love is there than attaining the love of Allah subhana wa ta’ala.
Be reasonable. Put on your akhirah lens, and choose your battles wisely.

BIRRUL WALIDAIN - GOODNESS TO PARENTS.
Honor your parents, best way to do this is when they're living not when they're dead and gone. Some honor their parents only after their death. This is quite peculiar yet a palpable reality. That too is done by engaging in all sorts of religious innovations in the name of honoring parents. This is not right and opposes the prophetic methodology. This may be a reason for increased torment in the grave because for some parents who themselves did not practice the Deen properly and also failed to teach their children the proper, authentic Islam. This is a calamity.
And Allah said:
And your Lord has decreed that you do not worship except Him, and show good treatment for parents. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. (Al Qurʾān 27:23).
Birrul walidain originated from the world al birr which in Arabic means goodness, while its opposite is al ‘uquuq which means ugliness or disobedience. Birrul walidain can be interpreted as a good deed on parents or devotion to the parents. As mentioned by Urwah bin Zubair (radiAllahuanhu) that a person should always obey his parents and never to disobey the least.
Oh my brother and sister commit yourself to learning the Deen and from its legitimate carriers (the scholars).
May Allah guide us all.
AL IHSAAN CENTRE.
Striving to be upon Salafiyyah.

ISLAM 101: Basic Islamic Phrases: Part 4
Islamic Terms
Hijra: To migrate. This term refers firstly to the great migration of the Muslims in the year 622 from the hostile city of Mecca, which was controlled by idol-worshippers, to the safer city of Madinah (then called Yathrib) where Islam could exist freely. The Islamic calendar begins with the Hijra as the first year.
'Ibadah: This term is often translated as “worship” but it is not a correct translation. The word worship in English just means praying and bowing, like worshipping in a church. But the term 'Ibadah literally means “service” and it comes from the root word, “to serve.” When we say that Islam considers all life to be 'Ibadah, we mean that our whole life should be lived in the service of Allah. We are here to serve Allah. In Islam, any good deed, action or thought, even just holding a steady job or smiling at someone is considered doing 'Ibadah for Allah.

Iblees: Satan
Iftar: The meal you eat after sunset in Ramadan. Suhoor is the light breakfast before first light in the morning during Ramadan.

Ilm: Knowledge
Imam: Literally: leader. Although most Muslims take this term in the sense of a leader of the prayers, it does apply to the group leader outside of prayer as well. An Imam must be elected by the Muslims or at least accepted by them if he is appointed from outside. If the community rejects him, then he cannot be the Imam.
Eman: (Eemaan) Belief or faith. The root word of Eman is Amuna. It implies three meanings: 1) to believe, 2) to confirm that belief in your heart, and 3) to feel safe. Eman is what makes a person a Muslim. Often spelled “Iman”.
Ihsaan: Usually translated as “goodness”. The Prophet (p) defined it as knowing that Allah is watching you even though you don’t see Him.
Injeel: The Gospel of Prophet 'Esa (Jesus). The New Testament of the Bible is not the Gospel of Jesus. The New Testament was written by a lot of different authors well after Jesus went up to the heavens, and it contains stories about Prophet 'Esa, but it is not 'Esa’s message. The present New Testament was assembled three hundred years after the time of Prophet 'Esa by a group of white men on a Greek Island who voted on what their “holy” book should contain. Most of the votes were hotly debated! The Roman emperor who ordered them to do it then told all Christians to accept this new compilation of writings. All other Christian writings were ordered to be destroyed. The New Testament contains four books called Gospels: (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Hundreds more “Gospels” from other authors were burned. A few such as the Gospel of Barnabas and Thomas have survived. The Gospel of Jesus was never written down and is lost.
Insha'llah: If Allah wills something to happen only then will it happen.
Iqamah: The second call to prayer just before the actual prayer begins.
Islam: A submission to God. To surrender to Allah and find peace. To submit oneself TOTALLY to the lord.
Jahannam: Hell.
Jam'a: Together, in a group.
Jannah: Paradise, Heaven. It literally means “the Garden.”
Jibra'il: The angel that brought Allah’s revelation to the Prophet. Allah is so powerful and majestic that it is beneath him to reveal Himself to humans. We are like an ant next to a star in comparison to Allah. He sends the angels to do these small jobs, though He doesn’t need them. In English his name is Gabriel.

Jihad: A struggle
Jinn: These are another type of creature Allah created. They are invisible to us but they can see us. They were made from fire elements and thus are pure energy. They are not like ghosts or weird monsters. They can influence your thoughts, encourage you to do wrong, and whisper fears into your mind. They can be good or bad. The good jinn leave us alone. The bad ones, who are also called Shayateen, or Devils, want to destroy you. Astrologers and fortune tellers get their “predictions” and “readings"from them. Jinn spy on the Angels and learn secrets about the future, then they whisper it into the minds of the fortune tellers. Jinn live, die and have families like us but they exist on another plane altogether. The Prophets could control the Jinn but none of us ordinary people can. Although we believe Jinn can possess a human body, Islam teaches that it’s not very common. Don’t believe every “Jinn story” Muslim immigrants will tell you about their aunt or second cousin’s brother. Most of it will be superstitious stories that are culturally based.
Jumu'ah: The Friday Prayer in which all Muslims gather to hear a sermon called a Khutba. It’s time is in place of the Zuhr Salah, usually somewhere between 12 pm and 2 pm. It is mandatory on all men to attend. It is optional for women. The Prophet said if you miss three Jumu'ahs in a row then hypocrisy will start to enter your heart.

Kafir: People who conceal the Truth and actively plot against Islam. Usually we say the easier English word “unbeliever.” The plural is Kuffar. (Unbelievers.) The noun (unbelief) is Kufr.
Khalifah: This word means Steward, Manager or Care-taker. Allah made humans to be the Khalifah of the earth. In other words, we were given the earth as a trust to take care of. We shouldn’t ruin it or pollute it. The head of the Muslim Ummah is also called a Khalifah because he is to take care of the Muslim community. Muslims are supposed to elect a Khalifah, but there hasn’t been a world-wide Khalifah for a long time.
Khatib: The person who gives the Khutbah, or Friday sermon. The preacher during Friday services.
Kitabullah: The Book of Allah. (The Qur'an.) The word Kitab means book.
Mahr: The money (or whatever else) that the man has to give to a woman in order to marry her. It is called the marriage-gift and a woman can ask for whatever she wants. If it is money, it can be deferred and paid gradually over time. The husband can never take it away for any reason.
Malik ul Mawt: The Angel of Death.
Masjid: Literally means, “the place of bowing.” This is the name for a Muslim prayer hall or commonly known as Mosque.
Madhhab: This means, “School of Thought.” In Islam we have the Qur'an, the example of the Prophet and the sayings and guidance of the Prophet’s companions. Through the centuries, various Muslim scholars have tried to make those teachings easier for Muslims to live by through organizing them, talking about them and trying to use those tools to find answers to questions where those first three sources are quiet.
Of course different opinions developed between different scholars and some people chose to follow one scholar or the other. Those differences in ideas about how to follow Islamic rules are called “Schools of Thought.” There are 4 main schools today. Some people say you have to “follow” one of those schools to be a Muslim, but this is not true. You have to follow Islamic teachings but you don’t have to put some label on yourself. Each of the four schools is named after the scholar who founded or inspired it. The four are: Maliki, Hanafi, Hanbali, Shaf'i. The books and writings of the schools are a good source of information about the particulars of Islam, but our real label is, “I am a Muslim, and only a Muslim.” The Hanafi and Shaf'i schools are considered the easiest school and the Hanbali is considered the hardest in terms of social and personal rules. But they are all right in their own way and it is recommended to follow one in order to safe guard ones self from following ones own desires although it is not obligatory it is recommended.
Mecca: (Also spelled Makkah). A city in Arabia founded thousands of years ago by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). At that time it was called “Becca.” Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was born there in the year 570.
Medina: (Also spelled Madinah). A city about 200 miles north of Mecca. The Prophet established the Islamic community there. He passed away there and is buried there.
Mu'adhan: The person who does the call for prayer.
Mujahid: A person who does Jihad or holy war.
Mu'min: A person with Iman(faith). A true believer.
Mus-haf: The Arabic text of the Qur'an. “Brother, hand me a Mus-haf.” (Qur'an with the Arabic in it).
Mushrik: A person who commits Shirk (making partners with Allah). Usually an idol-worshipper. A Hindu would be considered a Mushrik because they bow down to many idols and statues.
Muslim: A person who surrendered to Allah and is working at finding peace.
Nabi: This term means Prophet.
Nafs: This is often translated as “soul” but it really means “the self,” i.e. “You and only you.”
Naar: The fire (of Hell).
Nikkah: The Islamic wedding ceremony.

Niyyah: Intention
