The Rugrats Movie
“The Rugrats Movie” held up in my mind because of its powerful moments and great themes, but quickly washes away any nostalgia held for it after viewing it today.
Tommy Pickles is expecting to have a baby sister. Initially, he’s excited to have someone to look after, but gets second thoughts after Angelica warns him of being forgotten by his parents. When the baby is delivered, it turns out to be a boy. Tommy and his friends quickly realize that having a younger sibling might not be as fun as they imagined. They all get fed up with the new baby’s constant crying. When Phil and Lil try to get rid of the new baby in the brand new Reptar Wagon, the whole gang ends up getting lost in the woods. Now it’s up to Tommy to get everyone back home safely.
I remember watching this movie when I was younger and really being moved by a specific scene. It was the scene where Tommy, in a moment of weakness, is about to go through with effectively getting rid of his new younger brother forever. The scene was almost biblical to me, especially with how the brothers were framed in the rain. It really resonated with me because it echoed some of the experiences I had with my younger brother growing up. I, too, had moments of weakness when I thought it just wasn’t worth it to look after someone who seemed to not care about the repercussions of their actions. However, all it takes is one small reminder to show you why it’s all worth it in the end. Now, watching this scene with a more cynical and critical eye, it just doesn’t hit the same way anymore. The change in Dil’s character seemed abrupt and out of nowhere. Dil’s whole character banked on the fact that he was a baby and didn’t know any better. The scene I’m talking about doesn’t work for me anymore because he seems to gain a conscience after being threatened by Tommy. This not only implies that Dil was aware this whole time, but also implies that his change in behavior comes from fear rather than love. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the movie is decent. The jokes are still solid and the fact that they mess up words and phrases constantly is still cute. It’s just that the movie overstays its welcome even with its short runtime. That’s because it’s frontloaded. The beginning of this movie moves at a good pace. There are a lot of different things happening that make the viewing engaging. Then, the babies enter the woods and that’s when the quality takes a nosedive. They really don’t have much to do in the woods. It’s a lot of the same thing over and over again. The babies are lost, they’re trying to make it to a park ranger station, and they’re mad at Dil. Meanwhile, the parents are under a lot of pressure because the world is now watching them try to find their babies. The dynamic stays stale until it’s time for the parents to finally find the babies. I feel that if the movie had more to play within the second half, it would’ve been engaging throughout and easily earn a 4-star review. Maybe even 5-stars if the content really managed to hit emotionally.
