Like many nineteenth-century artists, Ignacio León y Escosura expressed romantic views of illness—characterized by languid postures and emotional states more so than bodily realities—oftentimes projected onto female subjects. Such images linked femininity to idleness and created an exaggerated fiction that contrasts greatly with our present moment: today, American women are at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and, as The New York Times has recently reported, make up roughly two-thirds of essential workers.⁠
