Vaggie, irritably pushing her back at spearpoint, clearly resisting the urge to Stab reminds Velvette that Angel’s work hours with Velvette’s pathetic manchild of a friend are already a living hell for him, and he STILL talks back to Val anyway, and that’s WHY Vaggie is taking a seat at the overlord’s table, to try helping the other sinners that people like Velvette have left behind because they're too scared and spineless to help anything except themselves

Velvette looks actually pissed and not at all smirky anymore, leans in while ignoring the spear-

Carmilla smoothly starts the meeting right then before anyone other than Vaggie ends up losing an one eye

Velvette ends up being the one who spends the whole meeting unusually quiet, staring thoughtfully at Vaggie between making furious vent texts. She's somehow less upset about Charlie's pet murder angel sitting with the overlords than she is over losing her cool and almost skewering herself on Vaggie's spear like an idiot

That's a Vox and Val thing to do, that's why they need her, the only one of the Vees to NOT screw herself over some random looser who doesn't even like her

... but what if she could MAKE Vaggie like her?

If she could steal Carmilla's new tamed Exorcist- Charlie's right hand woman, part of why Val's toy still had a bolt hole in hell to hide in, and the only reason Alastor had met a hell princess with enough hope for her dreams she'd throw in with an overlord to finally get the ball rolling on them-

And Vaggie's switched sides before, miss ex Exorcist living in hell and picking fights with heaven. Why not help her do it again?

Poor overworked glorified secretary. Velvette knows for a FACT that her and the princess haven't been seen out on a single date since the hotel opened. With nothing else in hell for her but her girlfriend, that has to be getting to Vaggie, right? She could do with some appreciation.

If nothing else, the hell princess will probably be very sensitive to anyone else openly and personally appreciating her girlfriend. She might even do something rash, something to show the overlords and all of hell just how far they could trust in hellborn royalty.

Vaggie or no Vaggie, Velvette could work with that too.

She might even be able to blackmail Vaggie into working for the Vees, in exchange for NOT letting all of hell know that the hotel of supposed love and hope had a Exorcist stalking it's halls.

The beauty of that is Velvette wouldn't even have to sic any of her own souls on them. Just tell the Sinners the truth and watch the angry, vengeful, terrified mob tear Vaggie and everything she'd ever touched to shreds. All win, no loss. Vox would have already done it if he knew. She wouldn't mind sitting back with some popcorn and liveblogging the carnage with him and Val, if it came to it.

Ohhh but the satisfaction if she COULD take the Exorcist right out from under all of them...

And having an angel on their side would give the Vees one hell of leg up in whatever shit heaven thinks up next. They could really use a manager too, at this point in their business expansion- Velvette's got too much of her own shit these days to deal with Vox and Val's on top of it. A fourth Vee, in a coordination role, not interested in farming any souls or turf of her own, would be perfect- especially one that can cut through both bodies and bullshit.

Her name even fits with their theming. Velvette and Vaggie, the flipside to Valentino and Vox...

Hmm.

Velvette: Realizes she's been staring at Vaggie again, and Vaggie's noticed, and spares her exactly one second to give her a quick Glower before going back to arguing with someone.

I use Photopea to edit everything - It's a free, online alternative to adobe photoshop

I have a folder on my desktop with alllll the PSDs & resources I need in it

Then inside that I have a sub-folder containing my main editing bases & any of the UI PSDs I use super regularly

When I go to start an editing session, I open up the sub-folder (called 'quick editing access' - I have it pinned to my file explorer as well) and just select all the PSDs to open altogether in Photopea

Then I go from there just going with vibes & screnshot framing to judge what size template to put my screenshots in

I know some of ya'll will just want the links to resources, so I've kept my editing advice behind the cut for those who are curious ⬇️

My (kind of embarrassing) Credentials:

Here is a comparison of what my edited content used to look like back when I first started Simblr 5 years ago VS. what it looks like today - I'm gonna now dissect what made the biggest difference for me in improving my editing game

Obviously adding visual interest to your screenshots with icons, UI elements etc. does help them look more interesting - but for me the biggest difference between these two pictures actually comes down to colour grading, lighting, camera angles and overall staging

To break down the differences more visually:

So, how did I make my screenshots better?

1: Work out what visual style you want your simblr to be, and start emulating that style in your game

A lot of this actually comes down to the aesthetic things you do in-game before even taking the screenshots (eg: what skin you use, the kind of outfits and colour-scheme you dress your sims with and how you furnish their homes)

I'm sure you know a few simblrs off the top of your head that you like the content of, look through their posts and figure out what stands out about the ones you particularly like Is it the colour scheme? How are they staging their camera angles? How are their sims styled & dressed? Most simblrs have resource pages you can scroll through which will tell you exactly what aesthetic mods they are using to make their game look the way it does & sometimes they also have CC finds blogs where you can find similar clothing & cc to the stuff they use

To break this down in practice: I realised that I really like a maxis-match style when it comes to how my sims & their homes look, I want it to look simple, kind of cartoony and visually quite colourful So, when I went on a CC shopping spree to do a visual overhaul in my game a few years ago, and I only downloaded stuff that fit into that style I was looking for skins and hairs which had flat, less detailed textures, and objects / clothing that had been converted from other sims games to TS3 - if you like alpha style instead then you can only shop for stuff that fits in with that, or if you like a specific vibe (such as cottagecore) then only look for themed cc etc. etc.

2: Use Reshade, seriously!

I put off using reshade for the longest time because I thought that it was complicated to install & use - and while (like with everything) there is a learning curve, I got my head round it really quickly and now I use it without thinking

Again my advice for finding presets would be to look at simblrs you admire and find what presets they're using - or search up 'Reshade Preset' on tumblr and just pick one you like the look of - this will really come down to personal preference & what kind of vibe you're going for in your game

3: Colour-Grading & aesthetic design

I'm not the greatest decorator or home builder when it comes to creating something entirely off the top of my head with no reference, so when I'm building homes or decorating a room I always like to look on websites like Pinterest for inspiration

For example, here is a bedroom I recently designed based off a pinterest room - I added in some decor objects which are more specific to my sim's personality, but you can see the basic colour scheme & vibe is very similar to the other photo

In terms of picking a colour scheme for sims & their homes, I always use their favourite colour & traits as a guiding tool - this makes all of my sims look more unique and have a clear & defined sense of personal style that really helps me when coming up with ideas for decorating

Can you guess my sim Betty's favourite colour? lol - but having red as a starting point seriously helped me when deciding what vibe to go with for her bedroom, I just looked up 'cosy red bedroom' and that picture popped up - she's also a Snob and a Virtuoso, so I decided she'd probably be a classical music buff & a fan of old Hollywood - and I incorporated those aesthetics by using vintage posters and some music decor objects such as the CDs on the floor

I know this probably seems like it’s not relevant to photo editing but it 100% is - you need to have well-designed rooms and sims in order to take good photos!

4: Experiment with camera angles

This one is really difficult to describe but I'm gonna give a recent example of a screenshot I took:

You can see the second one (from a higher angle) is much more visually interesting and IMO just looks a lot better With the first one, I'd probably be inclined to put a moodlet or something over the empty space - whereas the second picture is full enough on its own not to need anything else

5: Useful mods & game cheats for you to know...

Game Cheats: -> hideheadlineeffects ON hides most of the headline effects like speech bubbles, plumbobs etc. -> moviemakercheatsenabled TRUE You need to do testingcheatsenabled true first but this cheat basically allows you to direct your sims to do any animation you want, which is useful for posing or storytelling purposes -> moveobjects ON I assume you already know about this cheat, but I use it all the time for moving my sims to a better location for screenshots - you do have to reset the sim afterwards though otherwise they will get stuck in the floor lol

Mods: -> no drift / lower level camera mod Allows you to get to those more interesting angles I was talking about earlier! -> Create your own visual effects mod Follow the instructions and create your own custom mod to remove the effects that you don't like the look of (eg: I got rid of the university life social boost things cos they annoy me) -> No camera fade Allows you to get way more up close & personal with your sims! -> Sethour cheat Suuuuper useful for scenery pictures or photoshoots

I hope that's useful, honestly, just keep at it! Keep experimenting, keep posting and make mental notes of what performs well vs. not well - the only way to get better is with lots and lots of practice in my experience

Like 5 years ago I had no idea how to use anything on photoshop - and now I'm really familiar with most of the tools - It took me a long time to get to this point, so don't beat yourself up if you're just starting out and stuff isn't looking how you want it to - just use it as motivation to try and get better!

Youtube / blog tutorials and other simblrs resource lists are your best friends when it comes to learning how to improve your game style & when learning how to use photo-editing tools :)

Also, an important final note is that I really really enjoy photo editing, it's part of the fun of playing the game for me! - If you don't, that's totally fine! Don't force yourself to do something you don't enjoy, you can just post your screenshots no matter how they look, this is simblr after all, we're all posting about games which are decades old atp, it's really not that serious :P

resources for learning Japanese

I'm just making this post because someone asked me! This is stuff I've used and liked; it's not comprehensive by any means. For every resource I enjoy, I know a bunch of Japanese learners who managed to reach a high level of proficiency without using it.

First:

The person who messaged me mentioned motivation. I'm gonna play devil's advocate for a quick sec, so bear with me. Japanese, for native speakers of English who do not know any languages similar to Japanese, is really time-consuming to learn. I am teaching Japanese to a student rn, and I just had a conference with their parents in which I straightforwardly said: In the time it takes your child to learn Japanese, they could probably have learned Spanish, French, how to sail, and a bit of carpentry instead. I'm personally learning Japanese for a lot of different reasons: I want to live in a country where I can afford health care and rent; I love Japanese literature and feel intellectually stilted without access to it; lots of my homies speak Japanese; etc. But there are real trade-offs, and I have sometimes wondered what my life would be if I'd gotten super into Dutch or computer programming or moss instead. It's worth thinking about whether the investment is worth it for you, and taking the time to write out why you're doing this.

The Resources

Grammar

A very nice guy named Tae Kim wrote a perfectly good textbook on basic Japanese grammar that he shares with folks for free (https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar).

Bunpro.jp: Bunpro is THE BEST!!!!! Really thorough, logical grammar explanations; they routinely clarify stuff for me that I've never fully understood before. In addition to explaining the grammar, they have tons of example sentences, most of which have audio tracks with recordings made by professional Japanese voice actors. AND you can add the grammar points you're learning to a flashcard desk and practice that way. Bunpro doesn't just improve grammar, but it really improves your speaking and writing skills as well imo; something about the way the flashcards force me to think really works on my active language skills.

GameGengo is a super cool YouTube channel where one guy explains grammar points while showing you tons of examples from real video games. https://www.youtube.com/@GameGengo

JapaneseAmmoWithMisa is another great YouTube channel where a native speaker explains a lot of stuff that I otherwise don't encounter in textbooks.

Kanji

I like WaniKani and think it's been the best thing for me in terms of knowing how to read kanji combinations that are kind of "weird," unusual, rare, etc. However, it took me a long time to realize that WaniKani really focuses on passive reading skills and not writing at all, so I do recommend practicing writing on your own.

I didn't own a kanji dictionary for years, but I've found them pretty necessary since I started focusing on my writing. Both of the above are equally good imo (the left is probably more readily available in Japan; the right is cheaper in the US). They both put the kanji in a logical sequence, from common to uncommon, and then have useful lists of frequent kanji combinations, tell you the stroke order, etc.

Listening

I really like FluentU, which shows you clips from native materials like movies, shows, commercials, interviews, etc., and then teaches you the vocab you heard, quizzes you on it, and shows you the video again so that you can see how much more you can understand. It's a little expensive to use, though (DO wait for their sales, which happen frequently), and you can definitely find a lot of free stuff to listen to online.

I love JFF Theatre, which has recently released movies from Japan, completely free to watch:

They used to only be allowed to stream movies for one month every year, and now they stream different stuff year-round, which is really cool. They usually have about 6 different movies at a time.

Textbooks

The Shin Kanzen Master textbook series, which is based on JLPT levels, is known for being pretty hard but is also v useful, especially if you're trying to pass the JLPT. The vocab textbooks are cool when you're N2 and above because they teach you tons of nuance between synonyms of words.

Misc

You can follow cool Japanese learners on Tumblr like @tokidokitokyo, @corvid-language-library, and @epivanosilon (and tons of other cool folks!!)

Literally yesterday I found the KuLA app (くずし字学習支援アプリKuLA), which teaches you the basics of how to read kuzushiji (pre-modern Japanese script) in a cute way. I love how the little bug-sensei starts off so optimistic but then freaks out when explaining how hard it is to read pre-modern texts lol:

I'm playing a Doctor Who ttrpg with @the-worms-in-your-bones that's set in the early days of the Time War, and I wanted to ask for your advice on something.

My character, Vendril, is ex-CIA. That is, they were CIA until just before the start of the campaign, when a mission went terribly wrong (it was mostly Vendril's fault). That mission resulted in Vendril's teammate regenerating, Vendril's TARDIS divorcing them, and Vendril sitting in a cell in the CIA's prison.

I'm working on a list of the things that Vendril got up to while working for the CIA. I know they've been off-world on missions prior to the campaign and going renegade. Do you have any suggestions for potential missions or other CIA tasks they could have either done or failed spectacularly at?

Part of my goal with this is to annoy Narvin as much as possible. Vendril does paperwork in a way that isn't wrong but also isn't how Narvin wants it done. ooh i've been vaguely hearing of this campaign for a while now, it sounds like so much fun!! and thank you for asking me about this i'm honoured <3 i've been thinking a lot about this kind of thing for the little cia spinoff i'm writing and here's the rundown:

the cia's main thing is protecting the integrity of the web of time, their secondary thing is planetary security and intelligence. and since the cia are the only institution that's pro-intervention, anything in those two categories that isn't a formal military or diplomatic matter could reasonably fall under the jurisdiction of the cia

for off-world "web of time" missions i usually go with time tech investigation (someone has time related technology they shouldn't have, mission is to confiscate and/or destroy it) or temporal anomaly investigation and repair, because you can cover a huge amount of ground with that. black market tech, a time explosion, people mysteriously disappearing from history, anything. and have your agent's mission brief be "go and deal with that" gives a lot of room for them to interpret the rules (and piss off narvin). could also have them intentionally change or damage the web of time for various shady cia purposes

security and intelligence off world is basically interference with various political landscapes for the purpose of maintaining gallifreyan power. this can involve targeted attacks, assassinations, coups, undercover infiltration, blackmail, bribery, shadowy influence, brute force, intimidation, and so on. for example, narvin secretly having those failsafe equations built into the monan hostworld thing so they'd have something to hold over the monans' heads. could also be small petty stuff like election interference on a minor planet that gallifrey needs a trade alliance with, or giving some temporal vandals a stern talking to. go wild honestly

for on-gallifrey stuff, there's not much to do with the web of time but you can come up with a LOT of fun internal security and espionage things to do. we've seen secretive weapons development a couple of times, gallifreyan election interference and general political scheming. dealing with terrorist plots, outsiders aliens and renegades, political prisoners, attempted coups and assassinations, internal espionage and sabotage/beef between the cia and other organizations, basically any of the political interference they do on other planets they can also do on gallifrey. some ideas to throw around could be like, they have to deal with someone in low town who's trying to gather power to undermine capitol authority in their district, or they have to kill/force regenerate some politician in arcadia who's going to tip a vote in an unfavourable direction, or there's a mysterious weapons shipment that went missing in transit

they can be as petty and silly or as big and dramatic as you need them to be for your character! and ALL of them have the potential to be failed at spectacularly and annoy narvin to death. cia agents are very good at being very stupid, especially when it comes to interacting with aliens, so if vendril's mission was like "gather information on a potential time cult from locals on this planet" it would be typical cia for them to bungle it completely and just get yelled at and sent away with no info at all lol

Alright, after running this blog for over a year I've decided to make an actual pinned post—complete with a guide to my tagging system.

First off, who am I?

I am the sole moderator of dinosquad-central, obviously. You may call me Dino Mod, and I use any pronouns, including neopronouns that do not begin with x or z.

My Favorite characters are Caruso and Buzz. I don't actually know that much about dinosaurs in general; I just think they're neat. I'm the event coordinator on the Dino Squad discord server. And I love getting asks! (Although sometimes it takes me a day or two to answer them)

I tag posts with #dino mod to indicate that they are either original posts from me, or things I've reblogged wherein I added something to the body of the post, rather than just the tags. So if you want to browse my thoughts on the show, that's the tag to do it.

Now that you know who I am, what's Dino Squad and where can you watch it?

Dino Squad is a 2007 cartoon about five teenagers who can turn into dinosaurs, and you can watch it for free on YouTube. The first episode is called "The Beginning", but the series is episodic, so the order you watch doesn't really matter after that. If you want to watch in in order, there's an episode list on IMDB.

Yeah, a couple of things, actually. But this is already getting long, so I'll continue under the readmore.

Firstly, I need to give credit where credit is due, and make sure y'all know that the person who made the banner I use for this blog, which is also the quintessential "there's like five of us" dinosquad fandom meme, is @scoutbot. Everyone say "thank you, scoutbot!"

My profile pic, on the other hand, is lifted from official Dino Squad promotional material, but if anyone wants to draw me a new one, I'd be willing to trade you a fic for it—DM me if interested.

Secondly, there's one type of tag I don’t list in the tag guide, and that's the type I use to fawn all over everybody's Dino Squad posts. In such a small fandom, every time someone makes something new for it, they do so knowing it won't get much engagement, so I want to make sure they get at least one person who with enthusiastically give a kind, thoughtful, personalized comment on their post. Creating for a small fandom can feel thankless, but I want to mitigate that as much as possible by saying thank you thank you thank you for hanging out with us and participating in our fandom.

I'll mention it a few times in this post, but as long as you tag a post with #dino squad (as one word or two) I am basically guaranteed to see it, and I'll reblog almost anything in this fandom. I do take doodle requests, although it depends on if I'll actually go through with it or not, as it's not a guarantee. Same thing with art trades, its a mixed bag on if i'll accept or decline. And regarding comms... yeah!! It might varry if they are open or not depending on when you're reading this, but! I do have a Kofi, and they will be open from time to time!

What programs are you using?

Clipstudio Paint on tablet! I typically use the standard "Real Gpen" and "Oil brush" for most of my works, with the occasional custom brush or two I've got downloaded.

Do you allow usage of your art?

Yyeeap! Feel free to use it for whatever, just credit me if you do.

What about AI? Can we use it in AI?

Absolutely not. I don’t support AI in the slightest, and ask you do not use my art in such manner.

How do you pronounce "Ombiblombi"?

Technically "Om-Bee-Blom-Bee", due to it being derived from the word "Zombie", but. Frankly i've heard so many hallarious takes I don't really care how it's pronounced. Take a crack at it bucko and whatever you come up with is completely 100% viable

Is it okay to DM you?

Eeh... thats dependant on the sittuation. I'd ask you please reserve those more for important topics, as I much prefer awnsering asks for regular conversations! But. Im not going to bite your head off if you talk to me there, so don't fret :]

Welcome to my little corner of the universe!! Happy to have ya!!

My name is Felix! Short for Felixian, long for Ian. You can call me any of the three, but I'm most used to Felix. I'm a trans guy who uses he/they/it pronouns!!

My persona (and IEYTD fan character) is Agent Felix! He's an agent-in-training with no handler, and is mostly working at solving stuff without using technology. He used to work for Dr Zoraxis in that field, not really caring if he got paid or not since he was doing what he loved. Eventually, he turned to be a reformed villain after hearing about Agent Pheonix's work. He's pretty gullible, and could switch back to the evil side if persuaded enough, but since he constantly wears an agency t-shirt he'll stick with the agency for a long time. (The agency knew they could manipulate him into staying for that reason.) He doesn't have a handler- in fact, he's been mostly self-training since everyone's kinda scared of him. (He has REALLY sharp teeth and can't bite anyone because of that. He has bit people in the past out of reflexes. He's working on it :D ) He's startled really easily and can barely remember simple things- he jumps at any loud noise, forgets where he puts his shoes, etc., yet somehow he remembers where people leave their stuff and forget. He's really helpful like that. He's always loved helping people, good or bad. He doesn't have telekinesis... yet. He's trying to replicate the kinesium device implant so it can be used for new agency members like him. He's also trying to figure out a safer, less terrifying way for it to be implanted.

By the way, if Felix hugs you then you are special to him in some way!! He loves hugs but is generally touch-repulsed UNLESS he really wants to hug the person. So it's really rare for him to hug anyone. Congrats to anyone he's hugged already!

Agent Felix is basically just me as a goober agent!! So please be nice!! If you're mean, we'll probably take it as a joke or something-

-He's a teenager, but the agency has no idea. He was known by Zoraxis and his operatives as the Teen Prodigy. Sometimes used as a compliment, the rest of the time used as a spite name.

-Self-taught in everything he believes he needs to know- science, math, art, English and Spanish. Science includes all forms of science but mostly geology, technology and psychology. He loves researching mental disorders, for some reason. (Some of the things listed were taught by Zor himself.)

-He also loves playing piano! He overheard someone playing it when he was about six years old and managed to convince them into giving him lessons.

-He's very sensitive to sound so it's likely that if an alarm goes off he'll just be stuck there covering his ears.

-He loves singing, too! His voice is high-pitched and gives him disphoria pretty massively, so he sings to relieve it. (He loves his singing voice!)

-The Death Engine actually traumatized him. He refuses to talk about it :')

-He's very weather-sensitive. As soon as it gets colder than usual he'll be wearing clothes for winter while it's only fall. He'll keep that outfit for a few months then switch to something less heavy. Same for summer- as soon as it gets hot he'll be in short sleeves and shorts, maybe flip flops if it's 5⁰ above normal. Then he'll ease back into regular clothes.

I’m an artist I guess, not professional yet, but trying to be. Your local accursed one. I guess this is a get to know me kind of thingy d(^^ ;).

As far as name goes, you can call me any part of my username :3. I’m not particularly comfortable disclosing my name and gender at the moment, but I’ll add them to this whenever I am.

Huuuge Castlevania (the games only) fan, so that’s mostly what I’ll be posting and drawing about. My favorite character is Simon Belmont, although I like most characters from the series :). I recently got really into Transformers and made OCs for it, so you may also see a good amount of that as well. I may also post about Fear and Hunger, Vocaloid, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and whatever else I’m into at the moment (which I’ll add later if I do change or gain interests). I also have a lot of OCs and projects for them, hopefully those ideas work out eventually.

[ It’s difficult not to read the Pearl Poet’s Sir Gawain and the Green Knight without envisioning a sort of Benny Hill–style montage of hot-potato sexual tension: Lady Bertilak chasing Sir Gawain around the castle trying to stuff girdles and rings in his pocket; Sir Gawain running full-tilt away from her with his fingers stuffed in his ears, listing women he’s disliked; Lord Bertilak throwing open a series of doors with a hopeful expression and making out with whoever’s behind them. The account the Green Knight gives of kissing, of giving kisses, of asking to be kissed, seemed as sound an account as any to me, who found the concept fascinating but the practice baffling and impenetrable. The best and strongest men in the world are all assembled together; who that loved men would not ride into that hall and beg one of them to cut off your head? And who has ever been injured by men and not been disappointed at the insufficiency of the wound afterward? Come over, but don’t stay over; look at me, but not like that; here, trade kisses with someone else who will act as my emissary—now what on earth did you go and kiss her for?—the game of bodies and beheading made very little sense as a trans person who had no language for the way I experienced my body or the bodies of others, no way to explain that I could imagine myself as a girl and I could imagine myself being kissed if I worked hard enough at it, but never both at the same time. Welcome to my house, now you have to kiss both of us made as much sense as any other set of rules about kissing I’d ever been offered.

The closest I could ever come to imagining a romantic interaction that would need to acknowledge the body was this: I would imagine myself at the local dairy where some of my friends had part-time jobs. A stranger would rush in and shoot me, wounding me mortally but not immediately killing me, then just as immediately depart. My friends would gather round in horror and pity, all wishing they had loved me better and admiring the beautiful, gallant way in which I prepared to meet death. I would say bravely that my final wish was not to die unkissed, and one of my friend’s boyfriends would solemnly and respectfully oblige; then I would die and the fantasy would restart, possibly with a new outfit. This had the benefit of infusing every hypothetical kiss with the urgency of the grave, while simultaneously freeing me from having to imagine what on earth might be expected of me after kissing, or worse, what asking to be kissed without the threat of death might look like. Had I had access to a phrase like “transmasculine resonance” at a younger age I might have found a certain transmasculine resonance in Sir Gawain trapped in somebody else’s house trying to avoid kisses from both men and women while worrying about unavoidable physical challenges and the threat of blood; as it was I instead developed a habit of leaving parties abruptly, usually after saying, “I’m going to the bathroom, I’ll be back in a minute.”

When I was just teetering on the verge of puberty, between sixth and seventh grade (I say teetering but this was the midnineties and everyone was still drinking that bad milk with all the hormones in it instead of the healthful modern raw milk that sometimes kills you, so I probably had a solid two or three years of menstruation under my belt at that point) I spent a lot of time on the bus ride home from school listening to the classic-rock station. This was for two reasons; the first was that none of my friends were on my bus line until eighth grade, and the second was that I didn’t own a Walkman until high school. There were a couple of songs popular on the suburban Chicago classic-rock station that seemed designed to introduce a white eleven-year-old to the idea of the blues as gradually as possible: Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One,” Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis,” and a smattering of Bonnie Raitt, all of which played on absolutely constant rotation. I was very preoccupied with the idea that I was never going to go on a date or be kissed, an idea I found both desolating and incredibly romantic, and they served as the ideal accompanying soundtrack for planning a sexy, sexless future. They turned out to be, in fact, relatively formative when it came to my idea of what sexy women sounded like and thought about. The best possible future I could envision for myself (while remaining realistic—it was one thing to imagine myself dying heroically at Oberweis Dairy while my friend Katie’s boyfriend honorably kissed me into the grave, but quite another to imagine myself trapped with a boyfriend of my own) looked a lot like soft-rock-infused yearning solitude. I could imagine myself as a grown woman only in total isolation from the rest of humanity, and believed the absolute sexiest thing a grown woman could be was “incredibly sad about Elvis,” just like Alannah Myles in “Black Velvet.”

Perhaps it would have been better for me if I could have seen the movie Velvet Goldmine or heard of the Smiths at that age instead, and transitioned at fourteen. I might have called myself Trenton and had a cis boyfriend at fifteen; I might even today be five foot ten instead of five foot seven and a half inches tall. But I did not have access to Velvet Goldmine or the Smiths; I had access to Alannah Myles and Sir Gawain and church and was going to have to make do with what I had. By the time I did encounter Velvet Goldmine and the Smiths I had already developed various strategies of self-protection, and was mostly safe from becoming unbearable about them. I wanted male romantic attention very badly, and couldn’t stand it at the same time; I briefly had a boyfriend in college and spent almost every night of the week going over to his house, flirting outrageously with him, then sneaking out the window to avoid spending the night, feeling as I drove home every time that I had just pulled off the most marvelous escape, while simultaneously missing him already.

The Green Knight on the ground now gets himself ready,

leaning a little with the head he lays bare the flesh,

and his locks long and lovely he lifts over his crown,

letting the naked neck as was needed appear.

His left foot on the floor before him placing,

Gawain gripped on his ax, gathered and raised it,

and sank clean through the clear fat and clove it asunder,

and the blade of the bright steel then bit into the ground.

but stoutly he strode forth, still strong on his shanks,

To force a roomful of men to admire your ability to withstand physical pain and visibly bleeding ax wound—it may be that there is such a thing as too much transmasculine resonance, and better for me that I would not come to know of it for years and years. If you’re bewildered by that, boys, you should come visit my castle and meet my wife sometime!

I don’t think it’s quite correct to say that I didn’t feel like transition was possible at all, much less for me, until I came to know trans men. It’s still less correct to say that I transitioned for trans men, not just because of them, and yet something about that statement seems true however much I might want to resist it. I don’t quite know how to acknowledge that truth without creating a separate, wholly sovereign category for trans men that can serve as lazy shorthand for “men, but good” or “men, but not really—well, yes of course, trans men are men! but not like that,” or, worst of all, “men, but safe, due to perceived dicklessness.” Anything that frames trans men as a sort of Skipper to cis men’s Barbie seems rooted more in wishful or even delusional thinking than in reality, and elfland never tolerates wishful thinking. But the point remains that my whole young life I carried around a great and a secret love for men I did not feel safe expressing to men, because they could not be trusted with the love I—foolishly, impulsively, unwillingly—had for them; when I began to know trans men later in my life, regardless of whether I found them variously attractive, boring, self-centered, passive-aggressive, badly dressed, charming, clingy, or rude, I was at last ready to set my love down and offer it, to name it with full confidence in the middle of a great hall. I’d been so in love with boys and never told any of them, and I was so ready to say so out loud, and so ashamed, I could burst.

But not knowing my other options, Alannah Myles was the best kind of woman I could imagine myself becoming—too in love with a single dead boy to go out with any of the alive boys who might be interested in her, which seemed like a pretty reasonable position for a grown woman to take, I thought as an eleven-year-old with two solid years of menstruation under his belt. I needed boys to leave me alone so that I could be properly alone with boys. Sexy women stood on porches wailing about Elvis and wearing full chaps over their jeans, and the most billowing white shirts imaginable; maybe someday I could be so sexy that men would pay attention to me but never get close enough to remind me that I had a body.

It’s a genuinely great and, I think, truly funny song; the moment the music stops to reflect on just how sad it was that Elvis died—“In a flash he was gone—it happened so soon,” Myles sings, shaking her head mournfully and lapsing into a respectful silence. Elvis is DEAD and that’s why I can’t go out with you tonight. Of course, any eleven-year-old’s idea of what adult sexiness looks like is bound to be ridiculous. And there was something funny too, in being thirty years old and throwing a tantrum in my therapist’s office about how I didn’t want to want to be a boy because boys weren’t going to be nice to me. The rules of elfland are always bewildering, but that’s never stopped anyone from wandering in before. ]
