Spoilers for 2.3

Some thoughts, speculations, and headcanons about our little dialogue with Ratio (+more)

1. This tells me that Ratio and Aventurine are friends (or as close to being friends as both of them are currently capable of, which isn't much, but still). Yes, what Aventurine thinks about TB could have been them discussing their mission. But I choose to think that they just chat with each other sometimes, because they actually enjoy it. Aventurine feels comfortable enough to just share what he thinks about the people he meets, and he knows that Ratio is interested in his opinions, and he's right. He listens and takes note. btw people being actual friends is my favorite trope for romantic couples.

2. Ratio seeing his relationships with Aventurine, and our TB, and people in general as a teacher and a student and being constantly in his teacher mode made me think. Probably all significant relationships in his life were those of a teacher and a student. He cannot see himself in any other role because he has never experienced it himself. I wouldn't be surprised if even his parents provided him with knowledge and education instead of parental love. This may also be why he's so frustrated with people who don't fit these two roles: normal people not interested in bettering themselves through education, students who don't take studying seriously, most scholars, and especially the Geniuses, for not actively sharing their knowledge or doing anything to uplift humanity.

3. Ratio seeing their relationship with Aventurine in particular this way is appropriately weird and a bit unhealthy, in my opinion (but what did we expect from him), considering that they are undeniably close. But that's probably the only way he knows to show his care for somebody:  to teach them stuff and help them better themselves.

4. On Avenrutine's side, he seems amused by it, in a good way (the way he playfully refers to Ratio in the descriptions of some of the 2.1 quests, "Your professor friend," and so on). He even seems to be a bit proud that an actual professor has taken an interest in him.

5. But what can he teach Aventurine? He might share his actual knowledge. I think the "Death" and "Dormancy" part of his note is him doing that. But he mostly sees his duty as a teacher in showing people that they can achieve a lot by themselves if they stop relying on higher beings who don't care about them and start relying on themselves (with little help from Ratio.)

But "relying on himself and achieving things" is what Aventurine has been successfully doing most of his life. So is it the "little help from Ratio" that matters here? Or is he helping Aventurine stop relying on his supposedly supernatural luck and realize how capable he actually is?

6. This. (btw 'philosophical zombie' means "a being in a thought experiment in philosophy of mind that is physically identical to a normal human being but does not have conscious experience" (from wiki), so basically just some weird concept in philosophy.) But what an admirably in-depth knowledge of his 'not partner' he's showing here. Are you equally interested in the inner worlds of all your students, doc?…

7. Anyways, that reminded me of what Jade said about the Stonehearts, even using the same word 'void'. So. Aventurine has a void in his heart, caused by his inability to protect people he cares about. It's very significant that Diamond gave him the power of Preservation specifically to help him fill that void, to be finally able to protect somebody he cares about. The problem is, he doesn't have anyone to protect anymore (he doesn't even see himself as worthy of protection). Until recently. So, and I'm being extremely self-indulgent here, if Ratio got in danger, Aventurine protecting and saving him would fill the void in his heart. And btw what can boost one's self-worth more than protecting somebody who's important to you? I mean, he should snap out of that 'I'm only worth the money my slaveowner paid for me' mentality sooner or later, I hope.

(the problem is, I'm not sure how it can play out now that he doesn't have his stone anymore. And he lost it, not protecting anybody but nearly killing himself and furthering the IPC's agenda. Although doing something like that without the stone would be even more significant)

Also, I hope Ratio won't realize that, and won't deliberately put himself in danger for Aventurine to save him. You know, for educational purposes.

8. He just runs around helping people, making sure everybody's okay, and, emm, 'enhance their living', that's his thing.  And even broadly speaking, with his scientific discoveries, and him saving people on Herta station. And considering that 'everybody's my student' thing, I feel like he sees himself as responsible for everybody (in his own way).

And some people still think that he's selfish and egoistic. He even gets angry when we ask for an autograph:

9. Aaand that's the third time he disappeared in the middle of a conversation involving Aventurine. I understand him, though. As somebody who also 'detests noisy gatherings', group chats aren't much better.

Extensive thoughts below the cut! (Warning: very long...)

Necessary disclaimer that all of this is of course just my headcanons and how I perceive the characters. I'm not claiming I know the Ultimate Truth™, but these two guys have claimed basically 99% of my brain capacity in the past 7 months and mean the world to me. I thoroughly enjoy picking them apart and analyzing them both as individuals and a pair because they scratch an itch in my brain that I simply can't get enough of. But as with all things, we resonate with different things in fiction and in life. Anyways, enjoy!

Boothill being ace

This is something I always worried talking about in public, since talking about sexualities in fandom spaces feels like SUCH a risky topic I usually don't even want to open, but it's very important to me. Being ace myself, I personally see him as sex-neutral to favorable. I think it's an activity he didn't mind doing, and even saw as occasional fun, but it wasn't anything really special. He preferred building strong emotional bonds with his family and friends. Romantically I think he had one or two crushes, but never really anything serious. The life he lived didn't allow for it, and the (queer)platonic bonds he had were more than enough.

With the change of his body, the physical aspect fell away, so it’s purely a mental thing now, and he already had next to no desire for it before. When the opportunity arose, maybe he would take up the offer, but he was also just too busy wanting to hunt Oswaldo down to indulge in pleasures like those too often. He didn't see people in that light and didn't miss it. (I also think that there were some... more forceful people that were curious and really wanted to experience what his cyborg body was capable of, which only turned him away from sex even more. So now it became a conscious avoidance, too, on top of the lack of attraction and medium-to-low libido.)

Sex really only starts to feel special once he gets with Aventurine, as he sees it as a way to bond and feel loved. I think sex is a very integral part of their relationship (but if I got into that, this would get WAY too long). It starts to feel even more fun and Aventurine is mighty pretty—seeing him blush and gasp and moan is what's rewarding, not the physical aspect and involvement of his body (especially since I hc that he can't feel anything below the neck aside from maybe his groin thanks to emulators). It's also why I see him more as a service top—Aven's pleasure comes first. That's what makes him feel pleasure. That gets him that mental high.

Aventurine riding him feels good not because of the actual act and feeling, but what it stands for. The power Aventurine holds over him. The intimacy it embodies. Knowing that he is the one to reduce Aventurine into a sweaty, moaning mess. How they both lay everything bare for one another.

There's also the fun aspect to him realizing that sex actually does matter to him in the context with Aventurine. Where losing his genitals wasn't really something he cared about too much in regards to sex (this can also be seen through a gender lens, but I'll be focusing on it in a sexuality way), some insecurity may creep in. If it matters to the person he loves, of course it also matters to him. He just becomes very aware of... everything. About their differences, both in the short-term and long-term. How that will affect the... everything they have. Whatever they have. There's a lot to unpack here. I promise I'm trying to keep all of this as brief as I can but I'm failing.

Boothill and touch

For Boothill, it's not about the actual, physical sensation, but about the intention behind it. Getting kissed on the inside of his wrist, where a pulse would be, is special. Where his heart beats even more so. To have Aventurine treat his body with care and affection—treating it human, despite him not even seeing himself as alive anymore, nevermind human, even if he laughs about it—is what gets to him. It also makes his spine such an insanely vulnerable place to kiss and touch, since he has to expose his back for it. The places his body has been scratched/damaged, like on his lower abdomen, are also highlights.

Basically anything goes and is fine to touch, but the more vulnerable a place would be when made out of flesh, the more intense he feels about it being touched and kissed. And especially his neck and face, since those are still human.

To be accepted and appreciated for what he is now, and not like he is lacking anything, is what matters. And Aventurine does just that.

Aventurine being demi

Aventurine being demi feels kinda self-explanatory. Even if he may use sexuality and sensuality as a tool, I don't think he truly experiences that attraction until a strong bond has formed, which... has frankly not happened often, if ever. Nevermind romantically. That requires you to be vulnerable and allow others close to your heart. That's what made the bars a little difficult to fill out cause... there's so many walls he has put up, but he acts in certain ways. He acts flirty and sensual, but it's not genuine. It is and it isn't. He's a walking paradox and probably struggles to really understand himself, too.

But Boothill makes him feel safe, which makes him want the man carnally (lol). It lowers the walls around his heart. Nothing sexier than explicitly being asked for consent and being respected and loved by a sexy cyborg who wears his heart on his sleeve, I'm afraid. Plus, I think Boothill not actually having a human body massively helps him in overcoming the first hurdle regarding his trauma.

Aventurine's sensitive areas

Similar to Boothill, the more vulnerable an area, the more it means for it to be touched. Especially his chest, hips, inner thighs and neck are sensitive and feel the best. Boothill kissed his stomach once and he has been obsessed ever since. His lower back? Yes please. Especially if Boothill's mouth and hands are busy elsewhere. A kiss to the center of his palm speaks louder than any words and it makes his heart ache.

I think his arm pits are ticklish so they're a bit of a no, but it's a soft no. Because he trusts Boothill so much, I think he's really fine with anything, at least down the road. It does take a little while to build up to this, but fortunately Boothill is very patient and understanding in this regard ☺️

Kinks & Limits

Limits

This is actually a section I struggled a lot with. If it's a hard limit, I don't even go there, and don't even think of it. So I feel like there are likely some others that I didn't put down because well... I just don't think of them cause they're such a no lmao.

For soft limits, especially in regards to Aventurine, I think it's pretty complicated. He has some self-destructive tendencies. There's a lot of inner turmoil because of his trauma—he wants and he doesn't. He wants to be tossed around, challenges you to use him, because it's what he's used to, but he also doesn't. This would get way way too long if I went more in-depth on how I see Aventurine and his relationship to intimacy as a whole, but. It's just extremely complicated, and I feel like someone like Boothill is exactly what he needs to heal from all of that. Someone that allows him to let loose, to differentiate past trauma and future pleasure. Because he's safe. And eventually, he will overcome those fears that hold him back from truly letting go. Even if it will take time. (I'm speaking in general here and Aventurine's relationship to physical and emotional intimacy, and not about the specific limits I wrote down.)

They both definitely have their limits, but also... I dunno. It just heavily depends on the situation and how long they've been together. I think there's some kinks they would eventually explore in a safe way, especially in regards to bondage. Some mild power play, maybe—which would especially be a big step for Aventurine.

Kinks

Aventurine likes to receive, but also to see Boothill break, either in a submissive or dominant way. He likes to walk on the fine line, to see how much he can get away with. To push and prod until the tables are turned. Likes to see Boothill whimper but also have Boothill hold his hips a little tighter as he's pushed into the mattress or nearest surface. Dynamics

How they are with others before meeting each other, how they are with one another at the start, after they get together, and how that changes them in general are all different. They constantly evolve and grow. There's so many facets to them, it was hard to pin it down to just a few dots. But I had already spent a good... I wanna say 11 or more hours on this, on top of the time it took to write all of this, so I didn't want to keep tweaking it even more :') So I’ll just be talking about a handful of things.

Who does what

This was a fun section to think about. Since I imagine that Aventurine fell first, I feel like he was both not subtle at all about his affections but also trying to play them off as just his usual behavior. Boothill, who is a little slower on catching on to his own feelings, really struggled with that. Although after he does realize his own feelings, and wonders if maybe it's reciprocated after all, he really doesn't wait around too much and goes for it.

I think Aventurine likes the idea of getting married, but the reality is just tricky with the lives they live. Commitment is also just scary to him, even if he does care deeply about Boothill (which is also very scary). Boothill also never considered to be settling down somewhere since he expected to lose his life on his quest for revenge, but Aventurine makes him wonder. But whether they live a domestic life somewhere quiet or enjoy traveling the stars together, one thing he knows for sure: he wants Aventurine at his side for it.

Boothill had a lot of siblings, both younger and older, so I think he has a massive soft spot for kids. Having a couple of rascals would be fun, but only if Aventurine was on-board as well. Similar to marriage, I think Aventurine likes the idea, but might doubt if he'd even be worthy or able of being a parent. Whether they do eventually adopt or not isn't as important as simply being together, though.

I think I'm gonna leave it here because this already got WAY longer than I intended for it to be... I just can't help but start yapping once these two are involved. I would like to introduce my new (accidental) OC! 

Meet Cordelia Hunt, aka "Cory"!! She is a lemur mutant in the TMNT AU world of The Day the World Broke by @saladmix. And in case you were wondering... yes, she's that lemur mutant.

Fun fact, the ring-tailed lemur is my favorite animal. Around 6 months-ish ago, I asked Saladmix if I may make a small request for a lemur mutant to appear in the story somewhere. Nothing specific or anything, even just a glimpse of one would suffice. To my delight, she had a spot in mind, yay! -fast forward 4-5 months to her debut-

Now, it wasn't intentional for her to become a fleshed-out character when she was added to the story. She was a no-name background character who served a purpose and that was to be the end of it. But, a couple of weeks ago after chapter 24 was posted, my brain wouldn't shut up about her. Cue all of the headcanons, personality, things she's accomplished in the past, what happened when the apocalypse hit, and how she got to where she was at that point in the story, etc etc etc. All at 2am when I should have been sleeping. (Because of course, when else would inspiration strike?) 

With Saladmix's permission, Cory now has her own story living inside my head that I may write someday. But in the meantime, here's some details on her:

She was adopted as a young girl, roughly age 2-3. Her adoptive dad was a dhole mutant, a humble man, and a hard worker. Made an honest living and did everything in his power to raise Cory well. It was just the two of them, and they were very close. She considered him her real dad, being with him for as long as she could remember.

She worked as a mechanic in her dad's auto shop in New York City. She had displayed an interest in her dad's work from a young age and he willingly taught her. She became quite skilled in working on vehicles and knowing how to repair them. 

Because of her auto repair knowledge, she was taken into the group she is a part of when we meet her in the story. Despite not agreeing with their actions, she joined this group fairly early in the apocalypse. It's more out of necessity for survival rather than desire.

She had a passion for geology and was saving up to go to school to study it. She had a big collection of rocks, minerals and fossils in her room, her most treasured one being the aventurine quartz.

When she was younger, her dad wouldn't let her bring an entire bucket of fancy-looking rocks home but allowed her to pick one "special" one to remember the day by. She kept that tradition ever since, always ensuring to bring home a special rock from each adventure. Every. Single. Time.

Her favourite colour was green- close second being blue- as it reminded her of nature. A lot of her spare time was spent in Central Park, or outside of the city to go hiking.

She was part of her high school's track and field team, even if she would have preferred other extracurricular activities. She made the top record in the Triple Jump at a track and field meet in her freshman year, beating it again in her sophomore year and has been undefeated since. Some claimed she was cheating since her species is known for their nimbleness and leaping, but the school board accepted it nonetheless.

She was an unfortunate target for bullies during her younger years. They would often pull on her long tail and call her Zoboomafoo or King Julian, mocking her with "Move it move it". Lame insults (because bullies are lame and always go for the cheap shots). But she became self-conscious and when she was anxious, she always held onto her tail to protect herself and feel less vulnerable.

I've got more, but will save that for if/when I actually write her story! Let me know if that's something anyone would be interested in reading?

Some things I want to change in the Penacony story arc

DISCLAIMER: *As much as I do like some parts of the Penacony arc, I feel that we should address some of the problems this particular planet has and what are the changes I would make*

- First and foremost is giving Aventurine, Boothill, Robin and Sunday melanin. The former two are Romani and Native American respectively and the latter two because they’re the only Penacony natives among the playable characters that we have and Penacony is supposed to be based off the Jazz age which is the culture for black people.

- Expand on Gallagher and Misha a little more rather than just have them be plot expositors.

- Give Misha more scenes in between 2.1-2.2 and foreshadow the Ena’s Dream thing a little more.

- Sparkle and Aven can still have a rivalry with each other but make Sparkle less racially insensitive and instead have her remark about Aven’s position within the Ten Stonehearts like she can call him ‘Stoneheart boy’ or something fun, pompous but demeaning like ‘Stonehead’ or something. (Sorry not good with that but I just wanted something to go along with her playful and devious nature)

- The plan that Ratio and Aven cooked up against Sunday was a pretty good plot but like with Sparkle, have Ratio’s (initial) insult against Aven regarding his race and heritage be removed. (I mean even if it was just an act put up by both men, I still think it’s disingenuous of Hoyo to make one character insult another character’s race and heritage)

- Black Swan is alright so far so she can stay.

- Same goes for Acheron too since she’s pretty good so far.

- Firefly and SAM are also in a good position so they can stay too.

- I would cut out some unecessary portion of the story during 2.1-2.2.

- Gopher Wood should’ve been the main villain that the AE crew should’ve fought against. Much as I enjoy Sunday being an antagonist, I think he would’ve worked better as being Gopher Wood’s pawn and with the help of the AE and Robin, they would band together to stop him.

- Gopher Wood’s defeat would be an antithesis of Cocolia’s defeat. Instead of someone who was manipulated by the Stellaron for a decade, regaining some conscious and heroically sacrifice herself, Gopher Wood would be defeated by the AE train (lol) and be deleted permanently.

- Of course, despite banding together, Sunday would still be taken in by the IPC because he is still responsible for the villainy and all that. (Robin’s mini sidequest post 2.2 would still be kept and still acknowledge just how little she knew about the things Sunday went through due to her work and all that)

- I’m okayish on Aventurine’s character and but not the racism behind it in his backstory and such. I do wish to change it but I’ll just leave it to Aven mains to cook up something so as long as it doesn’t involve racism in it.

- Speaking of Aven, I’m not going to lie when I said I was underwhelmed that the Cornerstones for Jade and Topaz doesn’t have the same power that Aven has but I still think they should have some kind of transformative power when they activate it.

- Like Jade’s for example. When she activated it, she should have some sort of reptilian features to showcase her snake motif and maybe like a third ‘eye’.

- Not to sure on Topaz since we don’t see what her Cornerstone power is like so I’ll probably leave it alone.

- Also, I would revamp some parts of the sidequests like the Cocona and Tiozanic sidequest for example.

- With Cocona’s, I wouldn’t add the option to let her commit su*cid3 and instead have the player convince her to follow her dreams. Oh and rename her into something (that doesn’t sound racist and colorist) more convenient like Rhonda for example.

- Tiozanic is fine but I wouldn’t let the aftermath of the sidequest have someone taking over her role, like yeah she was decent person initially but she still committed gen0c*d3 and is a terrorist despite being ‘changed’.

Quick, since Aventurine's warp event is here: how much influence do you think Aventurine's former master had on him?

I saw people talking about how in left screenshot we see the master wearing rings on his left hand, the hand that Aventurine leaves bare. But Aventurine also likes to wear rings, so is he copying this from his master?

There are tweets talking about the rings when Aventurine's design dropped so I went to look for sources. Prepare for some unscientific stuff, but here's a link if you want to read more. (The screenshot has been google translated for convenience.)

Based on this, we kind of get the idea that Aventurine is blinging up the forward-facing side of himself while leaving the more personal (vulnerable?) side blank.

You can choose to read this in several ways: he's always on guard, he's distracting you with shiny things so you'd look at his right hand only, he doesn’t have any personal goals/the left side is barren.

But maybe that's a moot point. Maybe it's only because his former master wore rings on the left hand and is this something he copied later on.

So did he actually pick up bad habits from that guy?

Short answer: No, I don't think so. I think it's a conscious decision on Aventurine's part to be as unlike his master as possible.

One of the things he said that made me think it's okay to work with him is

It's a promise that the people he uses will be fine in the end even if he loses. We know this is important to him because future!Aventurine says so in the maze garden

The 'him' here is Opal, whom we are told is one of the more ruthless members of the Ten Stonehearts. The convoluted Penacony plan wouldn't be needed, with all its risks and possible failure, if Aventurine played like Opal, but to him it was important to play fair (i.e. He wouldn't risk other people's lives just to get the job done. The chips will remain unharmed and only Aventurine is truly in danger.)

So when I saw this

it was my eureka moment: to Aventurine's master, the chips are worth nothing and are replaceable. The one who holds the power is the one who holds the chips. The opposite of what Aventurine believes and how he operates.

And that's why I think that this

doesn’t necessarily mean that Aventurine hates the world. He had gone out of his way to play fair all this time.

Why not cheat? Or brute force his way with the system like Opal or Sunday?

Because he's kind. Future!Aventurine also mentions that Aventurine and Dr Ratio have a lot in common: the conspiracies, calculations, and betrayal (which we know was all an act), but I think they're also similar in this way. Dr Ratio is not nice, but he is kind.

Like there's a reason Dr Veritas 'secretly saved four rabble rousers from getting turned into space paste by Duke Ifrit' Ratio is here and has agreed to work with Aventurine. To him, the chips are also important.

(Sorry for proving a point by comparing Aventurine to another character. I hope you get lucky pulls since you read this far!!)

Aventurine and his reader seem like a big headache for sunday hahaha have there been any instance where Sunday has tried to argue with reader about it? A big arguement about her seeing Aventurine and their toxic relationship?

ohhhh anon we/they most definitely are a massive headache for sunday; they’re the constant migraine gnawing at the backs of his eyes and tugging at his temples—which is to say, thoughts of them and their escapades of utter mischief are constantly infecting his mind, clawing at the edges of his conscious even when he is decidedly not thinking about it, honing his concentration on more urgent, more important matters.

because all we/they do is get into trouble together! upscale parties, obscene behaviour on the dance floor (in public, how despicable), rumours of risqué romps in the club washrooms, drugs and overdoses (thank the heavens aventurine possesses that so-called ‘luck’ of his, or they’d both be dead several times over, sunday is sure of it), nefarious photos slapped across the glossy tabloid covers that demote me from sunday’s precious, pretentious, classy Adult Star to something scandalous and sordid—reduced to trash, ruined. all of his hard work, his molding and mending of me into the perfect escort, elegant and expensive, destroyed after a few sloppy nights in aventurine’s arms. which translates to: sunday is constantly trying to ‘rebuild my image’ and ‘mitigate the damage’ aventurine inevitably causes.

sunday does try to talk to me/reader about this behaviour and the whole ‘relationship’ with aventurine, but there really isn’t much he can say, especially when aventurine isn’t forcing or coercing me into anything at all, and is literally just paying for my time/company. all other decisions are made with equal autonomy; aventurine doesn’t force me to do a single thing. sunday expresses his distaste, thinly veiled with worry and concern, but it’s ultimately up to me what i do with my clients.

as such, sunday is a bit torn. this whole situation challenges his utter NEED for ultimate control over her/me and subsequently also really triggers that desperation for complete and total power—to have everything organized meticulously, just the way he wants it. he hates that he is not a part of these decisions (since when did i stop coming to him for advice and guidance on every little thing?). at the same time, this is literally my fucking job, and he knows he cannot intervene. 

this whole gig was SUNDAY’s original idea anyway; the people of penacony deserve high class pleasure, he had told me softly; and oh, it’s such an honour that i get to give it to them, etc. sunday likes to delude himself into believing that he isn’t a glorified pimp—that he doesn’t own me, merely guides me, herds me in the right direction, like a careful shepherd with his loyal sheep. it’s all bullshit, at the end of the day.

anyway, he can’t just change the rules halfway through because he doesn’t like aventurine. and if aventurine keeps paying me to come out, there’s literally nothing sunday can do to stop it. at that point, it’s not a ‘relationship’, it’s merely a transaction. and it isn’t even like sunday can raise the prices—no matter how much a night with me costs, aventurine can surely and easily afford it.

Isolation no longer bothers him - that is what Dan Feng tells himself. He's spent countless years in painstaking loneliness, and now his chest (void of a heart) can no longer ache from the weight of his solitude. If anything, he cherishes the days when none encroach on his space. No intruder means no experiments, no torment, no taunting words or self-righteous beatings. He's already lost so much of himself, he can't afford to lose any more.

He didn't think he could ever trust another person again. But then, a stoneheart wormed their way into the cavity of his chest. Dan Feng wants to deny it, wants to fight the mere thought even as he knows it to be true. Kindness scalds more than cruelty does, now. It's also a pain he craves to feel again.

When Aventurine stops by this time, Dan Feng perks up despite his better judgement. He watches silently, not yet moving nor speaking but attentive in the way a wild animal might be once it has first formed a tentative bond. The comparison is apt, loathe as Dan Feng is to admit it. There is no poise left to his ragged body nor mind. He is more animal than man as this mindest alone could ensure his continued survival; which makes it all the more strange that a piece of jewlery would entice him enough to step forward. Such a gift cannot satisfy his immediate needs nor does he find purpose in tending to his appearance any longer. Even with the earring, he is much too battered to seduce anyone into releasing him. His body no longer holds worth past its medicinal properties.

So, though Dan Feng cannot explain the action, he still comes closer; squaring his shoulders with an assuredness he doesn't feel. He raises his arm for the gift, overly conscious of the sores covering his skin. This body isn't suited for beauty, but he pushes onward despite this. The tips of his fingers brush Aventurine's palm as he takes the earring to gaze at it. Undeniably, it is beautiful. His chest aches with it.

"Why?" he asks, his voice rough from disuse.

No gift comes without a price. This lesson, he learned long before his sins caught up with him.

Putting together the timeline of your fic is such a fun activity between chapters because as of chapter nine it's:

Boothill leaves Penacony with the Express

Boothill lands on Edo Star and kicks ass with Blade of all people

With the power of Elio, Blade takes Boothill to the Luofu and enters him in the Wardance so that in return, Boothill delivers a letter to Jingliu. The letter in question was not Blade's idea as Firefly has to remind him to write it, meaning that the letter is strictly from the Stellaron Hunters

Boothill lands on the Luofu and Borisin are fucking shit up

now we know that canonically, Boothill fights in the Wardance and comes in second place to Luka and Yanqing. Where he gets the time to go find Jingliu's transport ship, idk but I'm assuming it happens at some point because later, Sunday notes that Kafka and Blade seem upset during the Pier Point Massacre and that the Aeons are doing weird shit during it. I didn't know Boothill was tight with the Hunters like that but it's a small universe and Boothill's good at making friends

We also confirm that Boothill was at Pier Point during the massacre and this was BEFORE he got his facial makeover because Dan Heng is a nerd and finds video footage of Boothill's pasty ass attacking Pier Point. Boothill also commented during his time on Edo Star that he's still in contact with Aventurine AND that Sunday knew the Pier Point Massacre mostly involved several Stonehearts fighting each other. But Kafka said that the Massacre was "a battle between Emanators", not just between Paths. Aventurine and Boothill are notably NOT Emanators, so was Diamond involved in the fight? What other Emanators were there? Dan Heng mentioned that the Express was at Pier Point and that they reconnected with Boothill there, but he doesn't comment on whether Boothill's got his new face or not. I'll assume that Boothill's face was still its usual paleness then

So at some point, Boothill

Boothill gets to Pier Point, either with Argenti's help or Ratio's since Ratio and Boothill were on good terms by the end of Lone Star

Boothill meets up with the Nameless before the Stonehearts start blowing things up

Boothill gets his revenge on Oswaldo, completing his Hunt

Boothill LOSES the blessings of The Hunt and loses his confidence

Boothill remembers he made a promise to Robin and tracks her down, becoming her bodyguard and boyfriend

Now, somewhere between points 3 and 5, Boothill does something to his face to now be tan and growing a soul patch. He also cuts his hair and loses his hat and turns Robin's old neck jewelry into an earring because he's down bad. We also know that whatever actually happened, Boothill told Robin that he changed his face on Lushaka and that Dan Heng personally did the cosmetic surgery. Robin has talked to Dan Heng about it and Dan Heng confirmed privately with Himeko that this was false, but we don't know if Dan Heng confirmed this with Robin

However, Robin DID bring up Lushaka the morning after she had dinner with Dan Heng and Himeko, but we don't see what she's thinking or how she feels during the moment. What we do know for sure is that Boothill is deeply in love with Robin and would do anything for her. We also know that his body is actively deteriorating - Boothill's own word during chapter 8's sort-of-sex scene - and Boothill isn't as proactive about taking care of himself as Robin is. Robin is also desperately down bad for her cyborg husband

So the theory is: Boothill's face reverted back to what it was supposed to look like if he was a regular human once he stopped being powered by The Hunt, but he's too embarrassed to admit this for some reason. Is it that when he first reunited with Robin, he was too self conscious to say the truth and ever since has been doubling down on his lie? Idk, I'm hooked on this fanfic, it's so good!

Someone's been paying attention! Chapter 10's gonna challenge your theory a little once I finish it but you're not as far off as you'd think. There's just a LOT more going on

Yimanika "Mad Cow" gestured for his subordinate to let go, he raised his head from the table and patted the dust off his collar.

"You guys, the high and mighty corporate dogs, look down on the wanderer, right? But you're on our territory now, so you have to play by our rules."

"Mad Cow" emptied the magazine and loaded a single bullet into the gun, dropping it at his feet.

"Six times, after at most six gunshots, life and death will be up to fate. Do you dare?"

He crouched down and picked up the gun.

He would be lying if he said that he slept with a clean conscious every night. He’d be lying if he said he doesn’t feel remorse, the weight of the gun a constant reminder every time at what is at stake. 

But it’s either them or him, he reminds himself.

Them or him. 

And the answer is easy, so he always pulls the trigger.

"There have been too many people pointing guns at me, and some have even pulled the trigger... But guess why I'm still standing here?"

He stood up, stared into "Mad Cow"''s eyes, raised the gun, and pressed it against his own heart.

"Because in the end, the gun will always come into my hands."

"And now, I'm getting tired of this game... A one-in-six chance is far from enough, to challenge fate——"

Six consecutive gunshots rang out in the dead silent starship, after the smoke cleared, he raised the gun again and walked towards "Mad Cow", with a new bullet in the magazine.

"You have to learn to turn yourself into a dice first."

"——You refuse to surrender, but on what grounds? Just because of this clumsy game of chance? Or is it..."

He turned the muzzle of the gun and pointed it into the darkness.

"Her?"

In the direction the muzzle was pointing, a woman slowly appeared, also holding a gun. The moment he saw her, "Mad Cow" seemed to grab a life-saving straw.

"Ms. Jade, this is not what we agreed on..."

Just then, the two of them opened fire, and two subordinatein the darkness behind each of them fell to the ground.

"The company's enemies are really everywhere, aren't they?" The woman calmly put away her gun, took out a makeup mirror, and checked her appearance.

"Using your and my lives as bait, letting them fight for it, making them think it's an internal conflict but they were all caught in one fell swoop... It's a good plan, but it's too dangerous." He smiled to welcome the other party's arrival, but his hands were shaking slightly.

"A plan? No, it was just a test."

The elegant woman opened her palm, and a "Aventurine" with a strange color lay in her palm.

"It's nothing strange, to be desired, to be chased, to be cut, to be sold... This is the fate of a gem."

"But you still have a lot to do, it all depends on how you see yourself."

"What I'm more curious about is why such a grand scheme failed to benefit anyone in the end, even the perpetrator himself?"
