HEY GUYS HAVE I MENTIONED HOW DARRY & PONYBOY CODED VIRGIL AND PIETRO FROM BOUND SMP ARE???

Okay, so for those of you who missed it, Jamie and Connor named their stream today after this one song from the Outsiders broadway musical called “Little Brother” and oh my god it goes so hard for so many different reasons. But that’s beside the point. Although that song in particular is sung about two different brothers than the ones that remind me of the birdthers, it gives me an excellent excuse to rant about two of my current hyperfixations; the Outsiders musical, and Bound SMP.

So, the first time I really started to see the resemblance was during that one stream where Virgil shows up at Rune’s door with a switchblade knife, all skittish and worried. It reminded me so much of that one scene where Johnny and Ponyboy show up at Dally’s house and are like “what do we do??”. And I know the end results were different (Pony and Johnny run away, whereas Virgil is convinced to stay), I still think the vibes were right.

Then again, during this stream with Virgil and Pietro. The entire time they were talking all I could see is that scene at the end where Ponyboy and Darry finally make-up after Darry hit him. I still enjoy Sander sides a fuck ton, but I've been out of the fandom for years now. That being said, I've been rewatching it recently and here's a really cool thing I've noticed!

So while they are characters and all of the sides feel fully fleshed out and realistic, they are also aspects personified and it was done SO WELL

Like of course Logan would get very stuck up and controlling with certain stuff, that's how logic operates. Especially with adhd, logic is usually the voice of guilt in the back of your head when you do things wrong. On the other end, logic is also silly, you sometimes remember something random for no reason. And of course Logan gets ignored a lot! How often do you listen to your logic 100%?

Of course Roman is grand and has large ambitions too big for his boots, that's what creativity feels like. Yes, Roman will be self centered, because if you're an artist (like Thomas) creativity is a big source of pride for you, especially if you post online. Roman being insecure makes sense when you think of imposter syndrome and how popular Thomas is. Obviously Roman loves Disney and cartoons, they actively spur on creative juices.

Of course Patton is pushy and controlling with his beliefs, that's what morality does! Growing up religious would only make that more extreme. Of course he's commonly listened to and taken at face value, your ethics/morals are some of the heaviest driving forces when they kick in, and it takes a lot to shift them. Obviously he's the least mature, your morals are instilled when you're young and you never really grow out of them. But he's also a dad because older male figures are stereotypically the ones that teach you morals in the first place!

Of course Virgil is so rude in the beginning but gets an acceptance arc, anxiety is a bitch to live with that fucks with everything else, but you need to learn to work with it, not against it, similar to any other emotion. He used to be part of the dark sides cause when you don't know what to do with feelings like that, you end up pushing them down or hurting yourself. He hates not being taken seriously because when you completely ignore and blow off your alarm bells it puts you in active danger!

Speaking of, Dark sides tangent! First of all, they aren't really the "bad" parts, they're just the parts of Thomas that he bottled up or tried to hide from himself. And the name "dark sides" is so good, cause it's like the dark side of the moon! Just as important as the light side, just different, harder to see if you aren't actively looking, and often ignored or viewed as "worse"

Tangent over. So!

Of course Janus's main role is to hide the other dark sides! He's representation of what happens when somebody hides parts of themselves. He has a villian and snake persona cause of religious reasons and because deceit is viewed as one of those bad things that need to be bottled up! He is at the core of a lot of self preservation and caring of others because for Thomas, that is the only time he's used Deceit so it's all that he can do.

Of course Remus is equally as prideful as Roman, he has the same issues with imposter syndrome! Of course he has a bunch of gore and sex jokes/ideas, he's the creative parts that morals state are "bad". Unlike Roman who's usually on topic, Remus goes constantly off tangent because that is what your wilder/more experimental side of creativity does! It just spits shit out and you figure out what sticks!

Its very similar to Greek mythology and idk! I just love when personification is done super well while making the characters still feel human!

i've also always been confused by dean's "i was here where were you?" because was he though? when they did find out, they punished him and cut him off instead of idk, strategizing with cas. it was a lose/lose situation for cas from the get-go starting with his decision not to involve dean as much as he could help it because cas did care about him. if the issue was working with crowley, cas ended up double-crossing him anyway. if the issue was being dishonest, well, that's nothing new among the winchesters

anyway, i don't have a favorite between deancas because i could never pick but in s6 i very much sympathized with cas so again, i guess i'm curious what you think he could've done differently. i hope this ask doesn't annoy you too much

Let's separate this into two pieces. 1) What I actually said (i.e. the disk horse I was addressing) 2) The utility of Cas's plan to pop Purgatory.

First, what did I say today based partly on a post I made yesterday?

It’s not remotely hard to see that Cas repeatedly uses Dean without his knowledge throughout the season. But you’d think based on how 90% of destiel shippers talk that Cas was waiting on Dean hand and foot while having his own needs ignored by a callous asshole. That’s literally the story people try to tell you while Cas uses Dean for everything from spells to forced labor to a meat shield for Raphael and Virgil while only showing up when Sam and Dean having a lead on an angel weapon is mentioned. They just erase Cas’s problems in order to misrepresent and reduce Dean down to a mean friend who doesn’t deserve him.

I'm wasn't talking about the plan to pop Purgatory and the conflict that happens over it in 6.20 (we can address that in a moment). I'm talking about how a large chunk of destiel fandom erroneously argues that season 6 Dean is a bad friend throughout the entire season who only cared about Cas being useful to him, when Cas is the one who spends the entire season using Dean without his knowledge. You want to have a conversation about something slightly different, which is fine, but don't conflate two common streams of disk horse about separate things. They have some overlap yes—but don't get it twisted.

What could Cas have done differently?

Cas could have asked to use Dean's blood for a spell instead of yanking his wrist over and cutting his palm open for blood without a word, but instead, he did it without asking (and that small act sets the stage for how Cas treats Dean the entire season). Cas could have asked if Sam and Dean would look for leads for him on angelic weapons. He could have asked them if they would look for leads on Purgatory instead of secretly cosigning Crowley coercing them into forced labor capturing alphas. He could have asked them if they would keep Raphael and Virgil off his tail long enough for him and Balthazar to collect their weapons. Instead, Cas used them without their permission or knowledge. All Dean asks in these moments is to be told that Cas needs his help instead of being used without permission.

You seem certain that giving Sam and Dean any information would have "jeopardized his mission"... but how? Setting aside the actual utility of Cas's plan to pop Purgatory for now, Cas actually could have communicated what he needed in every single one of these situations without revealing his plan to pop Purgatory. In fact, that's exactly what he did with Balthazar, isn't it? But again—we're talking about two slightly different things here. EYE was talking about whether or not it's true that Dean was a mean and bad friend who didn't care that Cas needed help and never offered him assistance while Cas moped like a wet cat, back aching from bending over backwards to help Dean with *looks at notes* something. EYE pointed out that Cas absolutely did not fail to make Dean useful to him. He just didn't bother to tell Dean he was doing it. YOU are talking about whether or not the Cas's plan to pop Purgatory was the only viable solution to the Raphael problem and whether Dean should have supported Cas despite everything when the plot was revealed in 6.20. Again—this is a separate (though somewhat interrelated) discourse.

Despite all the crying about Bad Friend Dean, it was Cas who showed through his behavior throughout the season that he would rather treat Dean as a pawn than as a friend. Cas coerces and lies instead of just asking his friend for help. Forgive me if I'm not going to coddle him over it. If you've been in this fandom for a single moment, you know that the fanon fantasy of Dean being a horrible bad mean friend with a angelic guardian waiting on him hand and foot starts long before 6.20 when Dean rejects the finally revealed plan to pop Purgatory, and the whitewashing of Cas's actions and outright denial of Cas using Sam and Dean also starts long before then. So lets not move goal posts. I'm asking people to stop ignoring and misrepresenting every single thing that happened between Dean and Cas leading up to 6.20. I'm asking people to stop assigning all of those things only selective importance (i.e., they're only important when Dean was the "bad friend", but when Cas was, it didn't matter/didn't happen).

Now let's talk about "the plan to pop Purgatory" briefly and the utility of that plan and whether Dean not jumping to help Cas swallow every soul in Purgatory makes him a bad and mean and terrible friend. Multiple people in Cas's life tried to tell him his plans would backfire, and he didn't listen. He ended up starting an apocalypse which was the very thing he was trying to prevent. He just traded out Raphael for the Leviathan and made no meaningful progress toward an actual improvement in terms of "threats to the world as we know it". How exactly did he make anyone better off?

For some reason, some people insist on arguing that while it did backfire spectacularly, it was "the only option" to dispense with Raphael and "there was no other choice", but nobody saying that actually knows that. In fact from a meta/lore perspective, this is just... outright wrong. Archangels have been dealt with in any number of other ways over the course of the show. The Cage. A weird ass egg. The archangel sword. Spellwork. You can invent whatever goddamn lore you want. You cannot reasonably argue it was "the only option" when archangels repeatedly show up and are dispensed with in a variety of ways that aren't "swallowing all the souls in purgatory, going insane, declaring yourself god, and starting a new apocalypse so we're right back where we started".

The only reason "popping Purgatory" is the only plan we get in season 6 is that it's the only plan that Cas allows to be made. He refuses to so much as consider the possibility of anything else because he's so deeply caught in sunk cost fallacy. When Sam and Dean and Bobby finally learn what he's up to and disagree with his plan, Cas breaks Sam' brain to keep them out of his way. When Balthazar disagrees with his plan, Cas murders him.

Dean tried to get info on what was going on with Cas from 6.03 when he learned about the angelic war onward, and Cas would give vague answers then fly off. In 6.10, Dean asked if there was anything he and Sam could do and Cas said there wasn't. When he found out about Cas working with Crowley, Dean asked to brainstorm a new solution and work as a team and Cas refused to consider this for a single moment. He insisted nothing about his plan was broken despite multiple people warning him, and his own secret-keeping suggested his own conflicted feelings.

Dante (author) has Charon ferry souls across Acheron in Inferno, and Virgil (also author) associates him with both the Acheron and the Styx. Acheron is also a real river, so it would make sense that people would say that it leads to the Underworld's entrance. Eventually, that changed to Styx, for some reason. Various poets say some of the other rivers came from/flow into this one.

Cocytus is the river of wailing- I wonder if that's the one that goes by Wuthering Heights, since Josephine could hear her dead mistress's voice because of the river and Every Catherine is the wailer of all time. Maybe it's not one of the big five at all, who knows. In Inferno, Cocytus is the 9th Circle of hell, treachery, and it's a big frozen lake instead of a river. Lament.

Phlegethon... surprisingly relevant. It is a river of fire, but in Inferno, it's a river of boiling blood in the 7th Circle (HMMM) for violence committed against neighbors, the self, and god/art/nature. Does Vergilius's EGO have anything to do with this one? Idk

Lethe is interesting. It's the river dead souls have to drink from before they can be reincarnated, so they would forget their past lives. You could call it the kindest river of the five, I guess. It's actually not in Inferno, but Purgatorio, and in that, it's within Earthly Paradise, which is a place on top of Mount Purgatory that represents the sort of innocence held by Adam and Eve before their fall. do with that information what you will

We've all heard of Styx, it's the river that people would swear their most grave and unbreakable oaths upon and is commonly known as the river that Charon ferries souls across to the Underworld. In Inferno, it's the 5th Circle, Wrath, where everyone is fighting each other on the water, and it's described as a swamp.

I have less info on which rivers appear in Virgil's Aeneid, though. Pretty sure Aeneas visited all of them, but I don't know if Virgil wrote about that or if it was someone else. He definitely mentions Lethe and Acheron, though.

I wonder which river spawned the abnormalities like the birds...

also fun thing you might want to know! there's a part of The Odyssey that involves Odysseus talking to a bunch of spirits from the Underworld! Scholars disagree on whether he actually went into the Underworld or if he was just on the very edge but :)

Honestly though, most of the bound characters are giving me orchestra energy, so I feel like a Band AU would be like… a band kid AU if yk what I mean. Elwood - Canon Elwood would not learn an instrument unless Mojave somehow gaslit him into thinking it would be useful. So fanon Elwood would know piano, cause it’s a classical instrument so it fits the vibes and it’s also one of the most versatile so I think we wouldn’t have to bend Elwood’s character too much to make it fit.

Erin - Erin gives me cello vibes. I feel like the Avicane in general ooze kinda classical instruments, and Erin feels like someone who would want something like a bass but a little lighter and more based on melody. So Cello.

Gaverin - Singer. That bird gives me lead singer vibes so hard. If she isn’t in the front of the stage strutting his newest designs and singing their little heart out like a bird version of Chappel Roan, what exactly are they doing?

Marcel - Viola. It’s just- mmmm. Slightly deeper violin that fits the human range really well… it just screams Marcel to me idk.

Mojave - lead singer/rhythm guitar/songwriter. This is just canon lol

Pietro - Percussion. Not drums like Ava, but specifically like orchestral percussion. I’m talking everything from the huge bass drums to the triangle. I think while Virgil was learning violin Pietro signed up for orchestra too and the director was just like, “here kid, hit this” and Pietro went wild. They’re probably the best percussionist anyone’s seen in a really long time, but she doesn’t really talk about it/show off that much cause they want Virgil to be able to shine. (Guys I’m normal about the birdthers I swear)

Rune - I feel like Rune’s a guitar guy. Like, their vibes are chill and laid back enough to fit it, plus I feel like they’d have a really fun time inventing like pedals and stuff to make the guitar sound different depending on the song and stuff.

Sylph - Triangle. And Kazoo. And singing (badly) /lh

Taliesin - Okay, okay, my thought for Taliesin is that whenever someone asks if they play an instrument they always say something that like no one knows how to play, like Basoon or the Oboe. And then if someone ever asks her to, he’s just like “oh no, sorry, the stars aren’t in the right alignment you see”. And it’s cause they don’t actually know how to play any instruments cause they’re a lyin’ cheatin’ little— anyway (/j we love Tal in this house and they probably play something that’s totally against their aesthetic but easy to learn like Uke or smth)

Vast - Vast plays Clarinet. It’s classic, it’s breathy, it’s something the symphony I mean Avicane would teach. It just feels and sounds right for him. Bonus idea: his sister played the flute and he picked up Clarinet cause he wanted to be in the same section as her

Virgil - Violin. Again, this is just canon. But I feel like Virgil wouldn’t be like the best violinist ngl. In my head he’s like 3rd chair but Pietro always comes up to him after concerts and is like “THATS MY BROTHER!!” And like glares at people until they applaud for him. Virgil knows this. And is incredibly embarrassed by the whole thing, but it’s still kinda endearing.

Sanders Sides theory (rant). I know im mainly a mh acc here but I have thoughts i need to get out there

(just fyi this theory is Roman centric, I know most TSS people nowadays are talking ab Orange and Logan so if Roman's not interesting then continue on 🔥🔥)

Okay so. I was scrolling through Sanders Sides theories and found that no one seems to have this theory, even though I thought the Roman angst enjoyers like me would be writing this all over the place but. Ig that means I need to talk about it.

I've had this theory for years now, since the day I first watched SVS Redux.

I think Roman is going to duck out.

I dont know if I have to explain why but. I mean, just looking at the explosive end SVS Redux had will tell you a lot.

He doesn't belive Patton when he tells him they love him. He thinks Thomas has lost all faith in him in favor of the person Roman views as the epitome of evil. He's been switching views left and right to stay on Patton's side (because Thomas prides himself on his morals), but he always ends up doing something wrong - he always ends up as an antagonist. He no longer believes that he is the one thing that being has kept him stable since "Am I Original?" - Thomas' hero. The only side he has a stable and positive relationship with is VIRGIL of all people. And tbh that could quickly be ruined too. Logan is second, though, but that's EXTREMELY fragile, as we've seen.

Roman always does something wrong and it will and has sent him over the edge. From Roman's perspective, with a very flawed view of everyone around him, he is inherently the thing that flaws Thomas.

+ Roman is really dramatic obviously, so ofc he would do this.

When you look at Virgil's reasonings for ducking out, it seems plausible after everything Roman has gone through recently, too. I mean like:

"I quit. Decided it wasn't worth it anymore"

Why would Roman keep fighting a battle he knows he will never win?

"Well, It didn’t seemed like I was wanted. You all made that pretty clear any time I showed up."

Again, from Roman's perspective, he is constantly and consistently antagonized.

"If I wanted to stand around being insulted, I would've shown up I would've shown up in person like I usually do."

"I actually think you were right to not want me around."

Roman fears that he is becoming the villain (as we see in SVS, SVS Redux and DWIT).

(In fact, Roman has already said something quite similar to that last one in sentiment.

In SVS Redux, Roman says this, which is pretty funny because of the dramatics and the stupidity, and does get shot down quickly, but I am begging you to listen to him.

"The blame falls to me. If you're missing that do-gooder drive... I think It's because I'm in the driver seat... And I'm an awful driver... Perhaps... Perhaps I should let Patton take the wheel.")

(2nd sidenote to the Virgil quotes, can we talk ab Thomas' acting again I just love how tired Virgil is in AA. He's so. Troubled. I love him.)

THIS!! First of all his face makes me so sad BUT SECOND OF ALL yeah. Roman core idk what else to say, you get it right.

So yeah.

Anyway, I think the episode where Roman does this will be centered around depression. Without Roman, Thomas is depressed. Let me explain this further.

Roman is Thomas' creativity, imagination, ego, passion, love, wills and wants, hopes and dreams, aspirations and enthusiasm.

Without any of that, what is left? A guy who can't even will himself out of bed, but can still feel the nagging voice of reason and logic telling him how unreasonable he's being. A guy who cant will himself to talk to friends, family and loved ones, but can still feel sorrow for letting them down and worrying them. A guy who can't will himself to pursue creative content that he relies on for a living but can still feel anxious about letting millions of people down and never being able to create again. A guy who cant even make food for himself or brush his teeth, but still knows he NEEDS to take care of himself. A guy whose only creativity is activly trying to disturb and scare him.

So yeah thats really awesome idk.

Furthermore, I think the sides might be SEVERELY impacted.

It has been said many times over the series that the sides are purely figments of Thomas' IMAGINATION. so. Without Roman, I doubt anything would be left. Obviously, if Roman does duck out, I don’t think they'd all immediately just cease to exist because an episode still needs to occur, but I find it likely that they'd all start slowly fading or maybe even "malfunctioning", glitching, putting them on a timer to get back Roman and making it far more tense.

Is this theory weird?????? I feel like it's the natural progression TO ME but I've seen no one even getting near this and im just confused ghfhfhfh. Maybe it is kind of weird and im just too much of a Roman enthusiast. SORRY I LOVE ANNOYING WEIRDO FREAKS!!!! AND IF I WAS HIM ID DUCK OUT TOO BECAUSE NO ONE IS APPRECIATING HIM ☹️☹️☹️ EVEN THOUGH HE'S LITERALLY WHAT MAKES THOMAS DO THINGS. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I also think it fits really well because of Prinxiety's parallels, such as:

The only difference in these two is obviously that Virgil just silently ducks out, while Roman has the entire "You make us better" speech, probably effectivly saving Virgil and Thomas, because it seems like Virgil was going to insist.

(Also another sidenote that I think everyone will agree with: WE NEED A "YOU MAKE US BETTER" SPEECH BY VIRGIL FOR ROMAN that is all)

Spoilers below! CWs: references to abuse, suicidal ideation/suicide

Before this week's chapter I had been wondering how we might see the Dante and Vergilius fight resolve since Dante had so clearly expressed that this was the end of the line chapters ago and Bel had just been defeated, but I somehow did not expect this to be what happened… :’)

Tbh I think he’s going to live if only bc I think that there was a reason we were shown that Vergilius has healing powers when he kissed Charlotte chapters ago. Maybe this is just cope tho lmao. On the other hand, I’d be really interested to see Priest’s (and Barbara and Leah, who were in France with Dante) reaction to Dante being dead so I’m torn lol.

I think it's interesting how often Dante's advice to fall in love from the first chapter has come up in the series, and how tonally different Priest vs Dante treat that moment in this chapter. Dante sort of broods on it and considers it a curse he's left on Priest, whereas Priest kind of brushes it off to Imuri as uncool advice from an unreliable adult. On the other hand, I think it’s super interesting that Priest seems to consider the hug Dante gave him as having saved his life as a child. In chapter three, when Priest saves the children in the aquarium, he similarly gives them a hug.

I’m sure a lot of it has to do w most of his experience with adults throughout his life involved physical pain (the abuse he suffered from his father, the abuse he suffered from the church, etc) so like I am sure positive physical contact was not something he really experienced. But also, this moment in the first chapter comes after Priest breaks down about how hard he finds living--outside of Bel, who Priest had forgotten about at this point, Dante was likely one of the first adults that actually listened to his cry for help as a child and saw his idealization of religious martyrdom that was really, at its core, suicidal ideation.

Dante’s whole thing about being tired of chasing Vergilius is interesting too. It uses the same language as when he spoke of his failure to chase after Vergilius in chapter 20. Vergilius naming himself Vergilius is also such a "come follow me" move since Virgil was Dante’s guide in Inferno. Interested to see how this shift in the dynamic affects Vergilius.

Also excited to see what happens w Marco next chapter. His relationship w Priest seems fascinating to me bc it’s kinda hard to tell what level of distance they have from each other. Marco completely idolizes him, and it’s also been mentioned that he was present at the previous offscreen exorcism of Mammon prior to the start of the series, and he’s also visible in a flashback panel to that exorcism. They've known each other for like three years then so it's kind of interesting how obsessive Marco is and how little he actually knows about Priest as a person for having known him for all that time.

Even in the first chapter we're shown that Marco's understanding of Priest is completely misguided, where he assumes Priest's studying the bible when he's actually reading poetry by Goethe and Song of Songs (the second of which is in the bible, but the unifying theme between the works he's reading is romantic love. Also, this is the dorkiest form of romantic texts for him to be interested in LMAO).

Also can’t wait to see what goes down w Leah Barbara and the others. While Marco looks pissed, Leah looks more worried than anything else, and Mikhail looks sort of solemn. Daniel sort of has resting bitch face so idk what’s going through his mind. Last we saw of them all, Leah and Barbara very much dodged mentioning that Imuri is a demon and said to focus on fighting the witches first. Now that they’ve clearly finished with that, I wonder if they’ve told the rest or if they’re still hiding it. Either way Marco would be pissed since Priest did work with Bel.

Anyways, what a chapter, I'm so excited to see what happens next chapter. If Imuri and Priest have to be on the run from the church for awhile I wonder if Imuri's friend Cass from the file extras might finally make an appearance...

I've been re-reading a lot of your fics in Ao3 these past few days, and I've had this idea for a while and I figured hey, why not ask? Basically, human AU, Aromantic-but-not-out Virgil with Hanahaki, and a best friend who is the only one who knows about the Hanahaki and is really worried (I picture Patton in that role, but if you think of a way one of the others would fit better the ideal, by all means go for it! I'd like to see your spin on it :] ) and they keep telling him to tell his crush or whatever and Vee's like "...no". And it ends up being bc of his family(? His parents or sth, bc it's not romantic love, but he's afraid of saying that to his best friend because it would crush them (and it's like, true that whoever it is for doesn't really care about him, so it makes it more angsty-) idk why this popped up in my brain but I can't stop thinking about it- . Maybe hurt/comfort with the friend group finding out and helping him in some way so he doesn't die(? ;w; – anx-fander

A series of songs Virgil listens to as flowers grow in his lungs. Chronic hanahaki isn't what people think it is. It's not blooming flowers from unrequited romantic love that ends in tearful confessions or the cold nothingness of the surgery. And Virgil, who isn't out as aromantic to even his closest friends, has no intention of letting anyone convince him it could ever be a good thing.

This isn’t supposed to be one of those stories. Chronic hanahaki isn't what people think it is. It's not blooming flowers from unrequited romantic love that ends in tearful confessions or the cold nothingness of the surgery. It's months of not being able to breathe quite right, of stuffing petals into trash cans, of cough drops and medication that's supposed to help keep the worst of them from taking root and long nights in the bathroom lying on his back with a vibrating vest to shake loose the brambles from the insides of his lungs. It's feeling the change of the seasons and knowing that it's going to be hard until fall, of knowing that for every moment he spends outside it's just going to be harder and harder when there's ambient pollen and he'll be sneezing and coughing his lungs out if he isn't very, very careful. Hanahaki isn't glamorous, it isn't romantic, it isn't the key to unlocking a whirlwind love. It's just painful and very stubborn.

Virgil puts on Que Sera Sera as he walks outside, pulling his hood up over his head.

Somewhere along the way, they’re figured out that it’s not really unrequited love that causes hanahaki, not necessarily. It’s emotional neglect. So when his parents still care for him—because of course it's his parents, of course it's the one root he relies on and it's chosen to only feed him sparingly, because they had a child because it's what they were supposed to do and not because he was truly wanted—he's surprised when he still throws up a mouthful of petals. Then he figures out it’s out of obligation, and he doesn’t realize that only makes the flowers grow faster. He sits in the garden one day when he spits up a full flower for the first time. He gives it to his mom, because he's only a child still and he wants to give his mother a flower, and swallows another when she smiles blandly and doesn't bother to bring it home with them when his father says it's time to leave. It becomes much harder to hide all the blood the next time.

July plays over his headphones as he does his homework, a trash can next to him filled with tissues and bloody petals.

Patton is the first one to notice and he’s frantic. He's about to call every single doctor he knows—or that his family knows—when Virgil finally gets him to calm down. He has his diagnosis, he has his treatment plan, he's got everything he needs to be fine, so Patton doesn't need to worry. But Patton won't listen. He's harping on about how Virgil needs to just tell his crush, it isn't worth dying over, that he's worth loving, he is, he really is, but he doesn't realize he's sort of making it worse. Because if this were just about that, about a romantic attraction, then yeah, it wouldn't be that much to worry about. Virgil likes to think that when it counts—and life or death scenarios definitely count—he's not actually that much of a coward. But maybe he is, because Patton just keeps saying how wonderful Virgil is, how much anyone would be able to love him, about how easy it is to love him, and Virgil can't help wondering then why don't they love me? He doesn't tell Patton this, of course, but he does break out into a coughing fit and Patton promises he won't push, not right now.

Virgil puts on This is Gospel as he goes to meet Patton for their walk, smiling as a dog sniffs at his boots.

Some of the other students figure it out and they’re still young adults so…well, you get the picture. It isn’t the teasing that makes it that much worse, it’s not the fact that he can’t explain that it’s not the kind of love they think it is, it’s not even the fact that some of his professors try to chime in not knowing the full story, it’s the fact that when he tries to tell his dad he's being bullied, he doesn’t believe him. Well, he doesn’t believe it’s a problem. It takes until Logan finds him one evening crying in front of two of them that someone actually does something about it. Some part of him should be satisfied at the fear emanating off the two in the face of Logan's rage, but he’s too focused on keeping the blood and petals inside his mouth. He can’t speak until Logan asks him to go wait for him at his dorm, and he throws the flowers up over the edge of a railing once he’s out of earshot. He bites his lip in order to have an excuse for the blood Logan finds at the corner of his mouth when he brings Virgil inside for a cup of tea as part of an apology for letting it get this far. He warns Virgil about how hot it is, not knowing he uses the scalding drink to burn away the petals in his throat. Each soft word Logan utters is another thorn snagging the inside of his lungs, each kind touch another breath he won’t be able to take. He gets the courage to ask Logan for a hug and feels the vines twist into a straight jacket. 

He sits on the ground, his back against a nearby wall, She Used to be Mine playing softly from his phone.

It's parents' weekend. His parents don't come, and that's bad enough. but then Roman and Remus invite him to come hang out with their parents while they're here. He sits with them at the restaurant and he's included in the conversation, but it's painfully obvious he is not their child. He excuses himself to go to the bathroom more times than is probably polite, but that only makes them worried, not upset, and he can feel the flowers getting worse. He manages to put on a smile to enjoy dessert and Remus remembers that tiramisu is his favorite. They split a piece and pick up another to take back to the dorm. As they drive back, a truck skids on ice and crashes into their car. Virgil manages to drag himself out of the wreck, trying to pry the others out too. He gets Remus and Roman out, but their parents are stuck. They're all crying, screaming at them to wake up, to try, and by some miracle, everyone survives. An ambulance arrives to take them to the hospital. The meds they give them make them loopy as all hell, so as they patch them up, he hears Roman and Remus's parents rambling deliriously about how much they want their boys to be okay, how much they love them, how important they are, please, just help my son, just tell me my son's okay. Virgil feels a very persistent branch crawling up his throat and the EMT next to him just stares at him with wide eyes before yelling for something Virgil doesn't hear before he passes out.

Virgil clicks through his music library, picking Irrelevant and jamming his headphones into his ears, shoving his hands in his pockets and stalking away.

Roman and Remus are lucky. They each escape with only superficial wounds. Their parents are lucky too; their dad has a broken arm, their mom has a slight concussion, but other than that, it's all fine. Virgil swallows the blood and smiles, happy to see them okay. So happy, he encourages them to go, he'll be okay, he probably won't be here for that much longer—he lies, Janus would be so proud—and they leave but promise to be back the next day. He makes another joke about savoring the time while he can before their mom asks if the hospital's called his parents yet. He lies again. He manages to hold back the vomit until they've all vanished out the door. 

He lies there half asleep, Skinny Love playing in his earbuds.

The doctor tells him that he’s only got a week at most, even though he knows how to fight this disease; he’s already lasted much longer than anyone ever anticipated. He says that he has medication, he has a treatment plan, but the crash did some damage that can't be corrected without surgery. And if they're performing a surgery on his chest, then they can't do it and leave the flowers there. The doctor asks for his emergency contacts. Virgil asks them not to tell his parents. It won't make a difference anyway. The doctor says they have to tell someone who can make medical decision for him, and he swallows his mouthful of blood and asks if there's any way they can speak to the on-campus doctor instead. The doctor leaves, promising to try, and Virgil buries his face in the pillow to cry.

He gets asked, once, what his favorite song is at the moment, and he says he doesn't know. When he walks home that night, listening to People Help the People, he thinks that maybe he's never had a singular favorite song.

Roman and Remus get back to campus and their parents fuss over them to no end. Patton and Logan and Janus all fret that they left Virgil in the hospital, they have to go back for him. They promise that he's alright, he's being looked after, that the hospital already called someone else for him. That's enough to soothe Logan and Janus, but not Patton.

Not Patton.

They all come back to the hospital the next day, distraught. Logan flies into his room as Virgil's throwing up more petals and he’s so angry, angry that Virgil kept this from them, angry he can’t do anything about it. Virgil says no, this isn’t your fault, you’re not responsible for my feelings, none of this is on you, I decided not to tell you. He never even intended for any of them to find out, actually, he never expected them to do anything about it. 

The doctor tells them he’s been fighting it better than anyone they’ve ever seen, but he asked them not to call his parents. Roman and Remus's parents promptly ask why, and when Virgil stutters and stumbles over any explanation, their mom looks at him with tears in her eyes and asks if it's them, if they're the ones causing this pain.

He stifles a sob and Patton starts crying. Roman and Remus clutch each other and Janus has to leave the room. Logan just stares at him and then looks to the doctor and asks what they have to do to fix this.

The doctor tells them that he's extremely emotionally neglected, that he needs to have a very strong support network built up around him before there's any chance of a full recovery. He still needs some level of surgery to repair the damage done to his chest, but they'll try to be as careful as possible. Virgil's about to say that they don't have to be here for this, but the twins' dad comes and sits right next to him, taking his hand a giving it a squeeze. His friends come and crowd around his bed, promising they're gonna be right there with him while he tries to recover.

For the first time in a long time, the feeling doesn't make Virgil want to cough.

“I care a lot about people, in general," he shyly explains to the twins' parents when he's out of the hospital "but I have absolutely no idea how they work. None whatsoever. There are so many weird rules about how much you’re allowed to care about someone else and in all sorts of very specific ways that I don’t get. So I default to caring a lot very quickly. I don’t expect people to do it back, mostly because they seem to get the minutiae that I can’t see. I get scared because I’m always sure at some point they’re going to hate me for it. The more I care the more scared I am. But it’s not their burden to bear, it’s mine. Is…is that alright?”

“Oh, you poor boy, come here. You're an incredible son, an incredible person, any parent should be so proud to have you as their child.”

"And for those who can't, that's their loss. You're our kid now."

"We have another brother!' Remus whoops as his mom pulls Virgil in for a very gentle hug.

Virgil can't stop smiling through his tears, even as his chest feels like it's about to explode.

"In a good way, right?"

"Yeah, yeah. In…in a good way."

Idk if you mentioned this before but, I’ve been rewatching some SaSi reaction videos recently and apparently there like a lot of inside jokes that can be easily missed if you are not in the patreon or the writers room. It also seems like the ideas that Logan and Janus are alcoholics idea came from there.

Personally I don’t like those characterizations, it was funny as first bc it was more subtle and a one off, but why is it that Janus is showing up drunk it doesn’t really makes sense—unless you’re in the writers room it seems that Ms Sanders doesn’t really care about getting new audiences or retaining the free to watch ones it seems to me that SaSi turned into a secret society bs with all the peeps who are paying him. Idk if I articulated correctly but it seems that the sides are being flanderized to heck rn and idk how to feel

I also noticed the same problem you're talking about and I talked about it too. There's no doubt the characters' personalities changed and there's no doubt that this is due to Joan's departure and Mr. Sanders' inability to handle them.

And believe me, there's nothing wrong with not being able to do something: that's why experts exist. But Mr. Sanders still doesn't want to hire one. Maybe he still believes he can do everything by himself.

And maybe, he believes that the writers' room will give him all the help he needs in remembering the characters' personalities and traits. In this case, flash news, Mr. Sanders: the writers' room is made of fans. And fans (especially young ones) are:

always influenced by their own headcanons

not always able to separate headcanon from canon

So relying on them is very silly and naive and a competent writer would never let their public decide everything. But since Mr. Sanders isn't a writer (and doesn't shine for professionalism either), of course he ended up being influenced by his fans. They're fans, so they must know the characters, right?

The result being, as you said, flanderization. Logan is angry, Roman is sad, Patton is stupid, Janus is drunk, Remus is weird and Virgil is edgy uwu. Nuances, details, being more than one single character trait? Everything lost.

I mean, the last GRWM with Janus was proof of how little Mr. Sanders understands this character and how flanderized Janus has been. Janus, the one who was characterized by shades of gray and nuances, is now just one thing, the last one people remember the most.

Sigh.

And yes, this makes me sad and frustrated, because the potential these characters had was huge. The mere idea that each of them had not just one main trait, but multiple traits that were linked to the main one in different ways... that was interesting. That was fun. It offered a ton of great material to work with. And the nuances of their personalities were a lot more interesting than just "drunk guy, alcohol funny ahah".

But in this case, I can't really blame the fans: fans are allowed to be fans. If they want to reduce the character's personalities to a sheet of paper, that's up to them. The author should be the competent one, he should make the characters more realistic. And he should be clever enough to not give fans so much freedom into a topic as delicate as the characterization.
