Uuuuh idk I guess off of that, when people relate to him because he's "hard" or "tough" or "cool" I always feel really. Weird.

I know a lot of people relate to him because he's severely traumatized and still pushing through. A lot of people want to be glorified like he does. That's fine - that's their prerogative. But I can't see you as cool or even edgy if you relate to him, yanno? He gets reduced to his aesthetics a lot and while I understand the ghoul perception of him (which is similar to some of these peoples'), we as an audience get to see him much deeper than that. Focusing only on the things he's doing that Look Cool and not breaking them down or comparing them to him as a character is always such a loss to me. I feel like a lot of the people I meet - esp IRL - that like TG often don't understand it, they just think Kaneki is cool and tragic, and THEY wanna be cool and tragic, yanno?

It's their business - idc what kind of person u are or u project urself to be. I'm more mourning the characterization of Kaneki himself as I watch it get twisted into this super cool super powered edgelord who's ONLY cold and detached now. I haven't met anyone in real life who feel that they hugely relate to any of the Kanekis' (or spoken to anyone online who do), so I can't really agree or disagree with what you've said. I can believe it happening though. I have noticed that Kaneki will get thrown in with lots of other anime characters that fit into the aesthetics as you called it, when he seems like the outlier of said group (possibly because I'm more familiar with his story idk). When Kaneki is mentioned outside the TG fandom, it's a very specific evolution of him that is talked about: Post-aogiri, pre-interacting with touka again kaneki, with no mention of his background, who he was, and who he becomes.

How do you feel about him being compared to Ayato?

I've always seen Kaneki as a vehicle for the real story of Tokyo Ghoul rather than it being HIS story. He isn't a character that I think I'd get along with in real life despite having things in common with him (being orphaned, let down by family etc) and I can't imagine a much younger me ever relating/idolising him in any sort of way as -like you said- he's kinda whiny, silly, and pathetic at times.

I mean, he gets there in the end, but he takes several country miles in getting there.

This is me reaching, but maybe people like to relate to him because they like the turning point where Kaneki stops giving a shit and starts getting fighty about it. He's spent his life getting treated like crap, then he has the enough is enough moment and takes it out on the world. I think there's people that daydream about being able to do that. Could it be a bit of wish fulfillment?

You put things more eloquently than I did, so I don't think I contributed anything, but thanks for writing this! I feel that Kaneki is an off-limits character to criticize so it's refreshing when someone expresses a different opinion on him.

as for my own process (long insight below the cut):

okay, so writing is never a straightforward or linear process for me... in fact, i think i'm pretty terrible with how i write; generally, when i'm writing fic, i bounce between comics and my own notes and ideas that have been scribbled and jotted in multiple places and never cohesively compiled which is not sth i'd recommend. like there's no real order or structure to it so idk how much i'll be able to help but i'll try my best <3

for lbia, i knew i wanted to write canon-divergence from dick's point of view, who is generally an unreliable narrator but would be 10x more unreliable in the post-spyral aftermath which is where the idea of indents and sections in parenthesis came from. since you're writing a short story, it would help if you have a thesis/central message or the barebones of the plot. what do you want to say about the human condition? how much do you trust your reader to extrapolate from the nuances? will the beginning and ending have the same message? since it's a short story, set up an idea bank for your main character(s)... how do they connect with their humanity? what does that look like? ask yourself questions about your character and spend time developing answers for them!

questions like these are a good starting point... spending time working out what you want to say and how you want to say it will never be a waste because it'll make the actual writing process much more straightforward + this is the time to get your creative juices flowing... you can often surprise yourself with your own train of thought!

the actual plot in lbia was definitely more straightforward— i wanted it to be about dick recognizing the shatter point of bruce essentially asking him to die again while also regaining his sense of identity and personhood in a way that felt authentic to his pre-n52 characterization... and the most natural way to do that was through the titans and the bats because so much of dick's heart is the various people he loves and connects with. so, i mapped out the trajectory of the characters he would interact with and how those interactions would go— what would be the central truths in those conversations, how would dick atone and repent without chipping away at his independence, how he would feel about these people in his life post-death

i had two outlines going simultaneously— one was more general, for the entire body of work while the other was a more detailed one with elaborate chapter outlines. for example, here's a snippet of my outline for the dick & tim conversation:

you'll see it's a mix of plot-points and actual text that went into the fic... this is because i end up doing a lot of my writing in bits and pieces when the inspiration strikes, so i usually have to compile them in outlines when i actually sit down to flesh out an entire section/chapter. organizing them linearly is not really sth i do on page, it's usually more in my head and as i'm writing the actual words but it's much easier if you have a rough chronological sense. obviously, this is not applicable to every piece of writing because it's not always going to be a linear sequence of events so you have to adapt it to how you're telling your story (and there's no right or wrong way... whatever works for you, works for you!)

as for the language, your best guide is reading as voraciously as you can. academic essays, novels, poems, plays, anything and everything you can dedicate your time to! you'll learn different words, different techniques, multiple ways to incorporate motifs and themes that lend to the depth of the plot and characters

take, for example, the pre-donna section of chapter one. i tried to use a lot of imagery and diction + dick's own perception of other characters and what it says about him to the readers... to really highlight how fractured his sense of self is. so, one possible way is to use notions that generally evoke a particular feeling in your audience to strengthen and further the impact of whatever you're trying to say. like the notion of a bird choking on plastic can have the visual impact of someone gasping for air + the toxicity of an extraneous variable being introduced, one which the bird/character has no real control or culpability for... does that make sense?

and most importantly, worry about editing later!!! get your ideas out, build a semi-coherent structure and come back for fine-tuning. when you allow yourself to write without the constraints of what's the most technically apt word here, not only do you have a more joyful time doing it but you also end up focusing more on the meaning and impact of your writing, which is ultimately what gives the gut-punch to a reader

also, i cannot believe you ended the ask with this "you've wrung my heartstrings and made me fall in love with reading all over again" LIKE THAT'S THE COMPLIMENT... of the highest order... i'm beyond honoured. thank you for sharing what my fic means to you with me, it really made my entire day i'm soooo grateful i will cherish your words forever <3

August really went through hell and back when recovering through her attack/wound. So, I think Rhinedottir being there when August is at her weakest and watching her blossom into something stronger, more resilient truly does warm her on the inside.

I think I want to share another special moment that I'm not sure if I'll ever write, mainly because I don't think I'm intelligent enough to. It will be hinted at or discussed in the rhinedottir fic I'm working on but basically Rhinedottir finds August in the woods dying, and that's actually how they first meet is at August's worst. Rhinedottir takes her in and takes care of her in the best way she can, but she's very neglectful emotionally. So, as their time together grows Rhinedottir in a way teaches August to be stronger in a sense and less dependent on other's. A big way she does that is by teaching August alchemy and I think a very intimate moment between them would be the first time Rhinedottir teaches August some knowledge about alchemy. Idk I just envision this moment to be very quiet, tender, and just incredibly intimate.

I’m not much of a commenter (which is super hypocritical since receiving comments is my kryptonite lol), but I just felt like I needed to. I cannot describe how much I enjoy your work; I’m absolutely floored by the sheer word counts you dash out so consistently. Nothing ever feels choppy, and the scenes flow nicely into each other! Your funny moments are funny, your sad ones are crushing, and everything else in between is iconic.

I guess I was wondering just how you manage to stay so consistent? I write chapters that usually range between 13-17k myself, but I can’t seem to stick with a consistent updating schedule. How often do you write? Do you sit down daily and write just a little, or do you sit down occasionally but manage a few k each time?

Also, I cannot stress this enough how natural everyone’s relationship in Trouvaille is. I feel like it’s realistic that none of the boys would be immediately too keen with the mc but that they also wouldn’t stay distant forever? It felt special being able to gradually read about their developments, and I feel like once the mc gets with more of the boys eventually, it’ll be so rewarding? Idk, but I just cannot wait. The latest chapter ending scene with Jin has me so on edge; I can sense the angst from here—

The last two chapters have been a bit shorter, but sometimes you say all that you need to without necessarily hitting the original wc estimate. I'm so happy to hear that the flow is smooth, and that you're enjoying the humorous moments (loveeee sneaking in things my mom have said before, her one-liners kill!) and I'm eeeeee you're too sweet thank you thank you 😭💕

As for consistency! I love this question, because I might have pulled the wool over your eyes. I started writing Trouvaille summer of 2022, and wrote up to Chapter 6 before I ever began posting on Tumblr. Between July 2022 - July 2023 I had chapters on "reserve" so really I'd just edit them before posting them.... Now, not so much the case. I write each chapter (since 8) each month, which admittedly can be a bit stressful, but it honestly forces me to write consistently and constantly. I think that can be a potentially good thing for writers who struggle to actually put pen to paper, having a "deadline" monthly, but every writer is different!

Additionally, I'm not the best person to ask about writing schedules,,, unfortunately I am a procrastinator so OFTEN I binge-write for hours on end. I recommend setting aside an hour or two a day to write if time allows you to do so, rather than type nonstop for 8 hours the day before an update LMAO!! I definitely want to become the writer that does bit by bit every day to cut down on the stress. I also want to say that once I stopped pressuring myself to make EVERY update 20k+words, things flowed a little more easily. It's better to have a shorter update that's concise and has everything you want to say, rather than bulking it up with filler.

Thank you so so much for loving all of the character's relationships so far, too 🥺 I know slow burn isn't for everyone, but it always felt more natural for me to write the hybrids as slow-to-trust, considering the world they live in in Trouvaille. I agree with you, when everyone starts to grow closer and closer over time, the sweet moments will seem even sweeter after all of the angst and growing 💕

So basically first I was like, okay if a zombie apocalypse would start right in that moment, what would I do? If the zombies would be fast, I'd probably die, if they're slow, I would use the nearest rod to stab the zombies in the head with it (u know like rods of little signs- idk how to describe em lol) and then my thoughts went further and I was like "What would I do, if I would see Slenderman standing in the distance? Probably I would think first, that I'm tripping or something or would be terrified. But then, I would test my luck and walk with my back towards him. I would ask for forgiveness when it comes to my stupidity, cuz I'd wanna ask him some questions- knowingly that he has no mouth to answer lol. Then I would play like the "yes/no" game with him and just ask sht like "are you here to kill me?" or stuff like that (okay tbh, the whole way I had a conversation with him that way, but I wanna write it differently lol) and he would answer by tapping me on the shoulder (which is kinda terrifying to imagine lol) I started to think further like, what options would I have? Would I be able to just leave and pretend like it never happened? And just keep living my life? Or would I only be able to decide, whether to die right in that moment or become a CP myself? What would be the requirements? I mean, if I would have to decide between dying and becoming an CP, it's obvious what I would choose, but if I would be able to choose this life or becoming a CP, I'm not so sure...... Then my thoughts went back to the requirements and what they could be? What if I would have to kill someone who's dear to me? and depending on how I kill them, my "powers" would be. Or what If I had to kill myself, where it also depends on how I do it... Or maybe it doesn't matter at all and you just get a random power (Which is usually never the case with CP's so...) Then I thought that the option with killing someone you love (or someone else in gen.) would make the situation more interesting. Cuz then it's more of a "only take my life and keep the others safe" or "fck it, then I take someone's life with me, If it gives me a second chance in return" situation, u know what I mean? Like with the trolley game. And I weirdly would've less problems with killings someone than killing myself. Cuz I wouldn't know how to do it. I'm physically not able to hurt myself purposely. And I know already, who I would aim for when it comes to the kill...

I've seen some of your AOT posts and I genuinely want to know your opinion on Isayamas writing? I truly don't think it's as brilliant as so many people make it out to be. I feel like Eren is not as well developed as I thought he would be before I read the manga. Especially Mikasa, I thought she was going to be this ground breaking female character, but she was just fine like Idk I just don't understand the hype around AOT.

this isn't rlly the best question to ask someone who bailed around chapter 40 and tried picking it back up three times 😭

from what i remember, the writing was good enough to keep me engaged (the first time i read it. i dropped it bc i ran out of chapters and thought i'd let it build up before binging it which i never did) I think isayama's writing is better quality than other shonen writers, and the plot twists and characters (I have so many thoughts on good plot vs good characters in manga) were enough to keep ppl hooked until the basement plotline was revealed. i've heard different opinions on this, and i've read that it's from there on that snk's writing faltered. i've touched upon what i think of the anti semitic themes in other posts so i won't open that can of worms in this ask

i've said this before but one of the absolute banes of my existence are snk dudebros who worship isayama and the "you aren't smart enough to understand snk's brilliance" snk weebs, so if you think snk is hyped up you’re probably right lmao

as for snk’s popularity!!!! i have so many thoughts!!!!

i don’t necessarily think it was the strong writing that made snk into what it is today. granted, writing is a part of it, but snk’s entire (beginning) plot revolving around fighting man eating titans, the grotesque scenes filled with horror, and all the shock value in the beginning of the manga was what catapulted snk into mainstream western entertainment, especially since during the time of snk’s inception there was really nothing else like it. i think isayama settled on a niche and executed it extraordinarily well (well at least. better than others) most ppl’s entry into snk is bc they saw a picture of a titan probably immortalized in a meme or something or eren’s mother being eaten. it’s kinda how like pmmm “revolutionized” the dark magical girl genre. snk has inspired a lot of other dark fantasy/horror mangas hoping to capitalize on snk’s popularity. all in all i do think that isayama and snk’s popularity changed the course of anime in the west, and once something is that popular, it simultaneously becomes harder to criticize and subject to more criticism, if that makes sense

as for mikasa it's kinda the same as ppl praising jjk for having the "best female characters ever" when it really doesn't since the standard's so low. mikasa was like the first female character depicted as strong and on the same level with the best of them. i like that mikasa has agency in the later chapters, even with eren in the picture, and yet ppl still have things to say about her relationship with eren!!! taking away what character she does have and attaching her to a man :/

idk if i’d call her groundbreaking tbh, but at the time when there were scarcely any female characters with agency and strength??? yeah totally. but then i again i haven’t completed snk and can’t say anything abt the later chapters. since mikasa as a ‘strong female character’ entered public anime fan consciousness, this hype around her character carried over to where it remains today. basically if you ask anyone abt a strong female character, chances are they’ll tell you mikasa.

in the end, i’d say not to let public opinion influence you, but to keep your mind open too!! i agree with you that snk may be overhyped, but there’s also a reason why snk has achieved so much popularity and done what other mangas haven’t been able to no matter how much i hate isayama!!
