When it comes to Dutch Van Der Linde and Evelyn Miller, it is natural that there are going to be parallels, such as they both excuse their suicides by not being able to fight their own nature, as Dutch was an avid follower of Evelyn, however it goes way deeper than that.

The main theme of the three Evelyn Miller books is that man is a creature of both action and thought, if he was just action he would be animal, was he just thought he would be god, however America in its attempt at bettering itself has denied itself thought and descended to the way of animals and as such is being led by a desire for desire for earthy possession to its death.

"Men are fixated on greed, on desire, and on the acquisition not of experiences or pleasures but the ability to acquire. People are fixated on wealth. Man is reduced to the desire for desire. Wanting is all that matters. Not loving, not being, not having, but wanting. We are killers for desire."

Man does not want something, the man wants to want, and while it has cut itself from thinking, it has cut itself from loving, from feeling, from being. And while Dutch seems to want to change this America and slowly descend into the wanting man, he was always the wanting man.

While the want for a better world seems to be making Dutch a better man than a person like Colm who simply desires money, it is not truly the only desire he has. Dutch shows desire from the very start from the small thing.

He has a stunning woman like Molly who has given him everything, yet he wants a young girl like Mary-Beth whom he practically raised.

He has, yet he still wants.

Throughout the game, Dutch asks for loyality, for faith, but he cannot get more for the entire camp has given it to him, they have given him their life for him to lay in the ground should he so wish. He has it, yet he wishes for more, he asks for more, and as he asks for more he gets less. It is his constant asking, pleading as if he has the right to their lives that causes them to take it from him. They realize his greed and withdraw because it isn't that they will not give more, it is that they cannot.

Dutch is the symbolism of the America that Evelyn Miller hates, the man who takes and takes, the man who does not desire for anything other than desire itself. Even with all the talk of heroism and ideolism, he is as much as a slave to desire as the America he has vowed to hate.

"For inside, he is nothing, so all that moves him, all that he understands is the external, the great churning sea of desire. It is not freedom. It is an impression of freedom for people who have not the capacity to see further. And why can they not see further? Because they have not been taught to see."

He might be aware of this desire, because he knew that like a drug he was addicted to desire and if not freed he would lose himself. He reads Evelyn Miller not for the chance of a better world but for the chance of an out. He knows he is empty, he knows he is desire and he wishes to be freed from it.

He watches as he hurts, he watches as he pushes away all those around him because desire overtakes him. While freedom from the desire he is a slave to seems better, the urge to continuing the search is stronger, continuing to desire is stronger, what morphine is to Swanson, desire is to Dutch, while Swanson found salvation, Dutch found a steep decline.

For in the end Dutch lost himself, his desire took away his ability to feel, his emotions, in the end Dutch's desire to desire became stronger than his desire to help his family, his people, the people he had vowed to protect. He would rather sacrifice those whos trust he had gained and had abused, yet continued to demand, than he would sacrifice his desire for desire.

"We are not fools, for fools cannot see their idiocy. We are somehow, worse than fools, for we will ourselves to do things of such profound stupidity despite knowing that we hate what we have built.-" "-we are as Adam, eating once more of the apple, only this time knowing full well of the consequences."

Dutch continues to rage on, he continues to hurt, he continues to demand faith, loyalty and life knowing that he hurts those around him, knowing what the outcome will be, however he cannot stop. He is a fool for he knows the outcome will not be good, he knows he is driving Arthur, John and Susan away, he knows that they are finally starting to see who he is, whom he has always known he is but has hidden from their sight, fearing that they will leave him. His desire for unending loyality is as based in fear as it is in desire itself. He needs them to rely on him to be able to feel achieved, to be able to justify his desire and mask it as a search for a better world.

And while Dutch may be aware of this, he has yet to admit it as Evelyn does in his final book which he died writing.

"But still my thoughts came upon me like wolves. My needs swamp me. My desires overwhelm me."

But what came of his desires in the end, at the end of his life? His desire had changed, while he still desired, he did not desire for desiring, he desired for an end, for the hurt to stop, he had seen what he had caused yet he could not admit to it openly. In the end he jumped because he could reach his desire without breaking the facade that he had build.

"I ran mostly because I am a terrible coward, but also in part because I was searching for something. In this way, I was both vain and a coward."

Is part of Evelyn's final book, he admits his cowardism and while Dutch never came to read this and would never have admitted to his own cowardism, he would have understood, however not in the way that Evelyn Miller wished to be understood because that kind of understanding required self awareness and acceptance that Dutch could never dream of achieving.

Evelyn Miller swore to finish his book before eating and as the book did not come together he knew that his end was near. While food was laying in his cabin he had the strength to starve himself to death, he had the strength to be able to stick to the promise he had made, and he knew he was dying because he wrote that he wished to be burned so he could fly with the eagles rather than rot in the ground with the worms, and as so he did.

Evelyn's death might seem foolish, because how can he continue on his desire when he is dead? But the truth is that from an academic point of view it makes sense because he pursued knowledge not for the practical use but for the beauty in it. He died searching, he died following his desires yet his death was not his final desire. He knew that by sticking to the promise that he would not eat before he had finished writing meant that he would never be able to continue searching, he would be obstructing himself from ever pursuing his desires again and because of that he freed himself from them. In his death he was free from his desires and he gained the freedom of the eagles he wrote about in his final wish.

Dutch on the other hand, his desire was death, he gave in to his direct desire and because of that he was trapped by them even in his after life, he was trapped to the mortal desires in death and as such trapped to the ground with the worms while Evelyn were free to roam the skies.

tldr; Dick and Kaldur are narrative foils that each place the other on a pedestal. This idolization means that they don’t call each other out as much as they should. It also means that Dick tends to ask too much of Kaldur in terms of taking on the emotional and phsycial labour of keeping the team going, while Kaldurs self-imposed need to  protect  Dick risks not only  his own wellbeing but also simultaneously infantalizes Dick

In season 1 Dick and Kaldur are narrative foils, that is to say, their actions contrast each other and help us better understand their flaws Consider also the arcs that these characters are set up to follow. From Drop Zone, we know the shape of Dick and Kaldurs storylines. Dick must step up and lead the team and for this to happen, sooner or later, Kaldur must step down, they run perpendicular to each other.

While Dick and Kaldur both suffer a crisis of faith in leadership after Failsafe they come to opposite conclusion. Kaldur views his sacrifice, the morality that prevented him from ordering one of his friends to take the bullet instead, as a failure.He sees Dick as the better leader because he doesnt struggle with these decisions, they come naturally to him in a way they dont to Kaldur. But Dick is not proud of his ruthlessness, that Kaldur lacks it is why to Dick, Kaldur is better suited. Thus each ideolizes the other for the traits they themselves lack.

But it’s season 2 that shows the real volatility in this relationship. Dick and Kaldurs dyanmic stems from the fact that Kaldur is oldest and Dick the youngest. Kaldur has always been very clear that the reason he became leader, was to shield Dick from the burden. It is also evidently clear that this decison weighs on Kaldurs conscious. It is not only clear to us, but to the other characters of the show. Kaldurs sacrifice’ of accepting leadership when he does not want to and Dicks reputation as the son of batman mean that the superheroing community, are hesitant to blame Kaldur for the part he plays in their relationship. Dick becomes the ‘problem child’ to Kaldurs ‘golden child.’ Meanwhile, Kaldurs tendency to step up, whiles Dicks is to run away means that  while Dick gets the blame Kaldur ends up bearing the burden. Kaldur is the one that goes on a dangerous mission that hospitalizes him, Kaldur is the one who has to lead the team immediately after Wallys death and then looses his position at the end of season 3. Dick never faces materail consequences for his actions because Kaldur is there to shield him from them. My point is that the only reason Dick is able to escape accountability, run off and isolate himself in season 3 is because Kaldur is there to pick up the slack. Kaldurs protection is why Dick can take a break from his leadership arc.

Consequently Kaldur is able to run off and engage in self-sacrificing behaviors cause he knows that Dick would take charge if something happened to him.He is expendable, ‘they need you more than they need me.’ Kaldur uses the excuse of ‘protecting Dick’ to engage in self destrctuve behaviors. Kaldur also uses ‘protection’ as an excuse to shut Dick out emotinally, Kaldur is always there to support Dick, but never lets Dick do the same. This is what I mean when I say that their dynamic is bad for both of them, because Kaldur impheeds Dicks growth and allows him to induldge in his worst tendencies. But Kaldurs protection is also bad for Kaldur, throughout season 3 and 4 we see Kaldur begin to crumble from the weight of these actions.

The problem is that Kaldurs raison d'etre is protecting his friends. Which while elevates him in the eyes of the superhero community, risks his life and leaves Dick in second place. Dicks actions in the show are unfair to Kaldur. The show acknowledges it and Dick apologieses (I would argue that Dicks actions are however, more unfair that the show seems to think as regardless of who first suggested it Dick should have shut down the undercover mission the minute it came up.* ) But another issue is that Kaldurs actions are unfair to Dick, who did not ask for the older boys protection or sacrifice.

I also want to draw attention to the Season 2 mission and the actual logistics of it. The show leans away from this but consider the ways in which Kaldur and Dick are both said to be equally responsible for the inception of the mission, despite the fact that this doesnt make logistical sense. My point is the following. The two arent telepathic, one must have voiced it first. One of them must have suggested the plan to the other. Which means Dick either saw Kaldur, who had lost someone he cared about deeply and was reeling from every authority figure lying to him about his parentage and suggested he go undercover where he would be isolated for months. Or Kaldur having just lost someone he loved dearly, chose to run away from the people that could have helped him unpack that grief and isolate himself, rather than deal with his emotions.

zuko allowed iroh to say whatever the fuck he wanted about his own sister and didn��t say a damn thing when iroh sexually harassed june. if iroh (whom zuko ideolizes) were to ever sexually assault anyone (again) zuko isn’t DOING SHIT. he’d react in the exact type of way that sokka and hakoda are portrayed in the fanfic. and if we’re talking about book 1 zuko he literally ties katara up to a tree and uses her for extortion and he knocks her out so hard that she’s unconscious the whole night, while chanting a pro-imperialist line (“i rise with the sun,” which is a reference to japan’s rising sun flag. the fn’s military is directly based on imperial japan). not to mention that zuko circulates katara in a predatory way, likely something that he subconsciously picked up when ozai would do the same thing to ursa. meanwhile sokka canonically tackles and berates aang (as he should) for accidentally burning katara. like zuko is not katara’s liberator in the way that the shippers insist he is, ESPECIALLY not book 1 zuko.

Born in Spain, Victoria 'Vicky' Manzano García was once a young student who took part in an exchange program of her university. She spent some months studying in a university of California, where she coincidentally met one of the most important people in her life: the young Rebecca Carlton. Speaking of which, the presence of such dangerous criminals around the city has forced the police officers, including Vicky, to take part in special trainings to make sure they are prepare to fight them. She has even asked her brother-in-law, Johnny, to teach her some martial arts moves in case she could need it. Sometimes it's really difficult being involved in such dangers, especially knowing she has a family she has to look up for.

Unfortunately for Vicky and her friends, as well as all of Earthrealm, they will have to face even greater dangers than they could ever have imagined thanks to the ambitions of a certain Emperor from another world.

Signs Of Crushes and Infatuation

1- Feelings Come on Fast

Infatuation hits with an out of this world intensity. You saw them and you knew you had to have them. Love at first sight, so to speak. The feelings didn't grow and develop over time, which is what happens with love, they were almost instantaneous.

This doesnt fit Toga's feelings for Tomura since they had bad start and their relationship starts developing slowly after spending time together.

2- Short Lived

Crushes come and go pretty quickly, usually in a matter of months. Love stays, whether the relationship works or not, the feelings are always there to some degree.

Ever since they met, Toga's feelings for Shigaraki or league didnt suddenly go away, unlike her feelings for Izuku and Ochaco. It stayed because that was true love. Not short lived crush.

3- Sees Perfection

With crushes and infatuation it is more about the idea of the person, than the person themselves. Maybe you think you would look great together as a couple, or one or both of you have a certain status in the community or a high income. The mind creates and envisions the perfect life together, and the happily ever after with Prince Charming.

Toga doesnt see Shigaraki as prince charming. Actually, she constantly observes his behavours, his happiness, his flaws, everything.

4- Crazy Or Irrational Behavior

Crushes can lead to stalking, intense jealously, and obsessive behavior. Sometimes the intense feelings of crushes can also cause risky behavior, and irrational thinking.

Ironically, Toga's relationship with Shigaraki makes her more stable, healing her from her usual unstable condition.

5- Based On Attraction

Crushes are often based strictly on physical attributes since you really don't know the "real" person, and there is nothing else to go on except what you created in your head. The infatuation begins because you find them beautiful or hot, and strongly desire the person. Usually the crush is someone whom is out of reach for you.

Once again, what makes Dabi, Toga, Spinner get into Shigaraki is that he is there. Stain is ideal. Toga's interest for Izuku and Ochaco is ideal, far away but Shigaraki is real. And that how they get over their ideolism for Stain and start developing admiration for Shigaraki. Someone who actually knows them and someone whom they know.

Signs Of Love

1- Feelings Last

With love, feelings may not last forever, but they do last a while, whether you stay in a relationship or not. Love does not go away after a couple of months, or because you realize they are flawed or look a hot mess in the morning.

Once again, Toga's feelings for league always there.

2- Accepts Them, Flaws And All

When we truly love someone, we see their flaws, and we accept them. Maybe he's a little short, or she's a little chubby, but if you are in love you don't care.

Shigaraki is first person who accepts her and thats very important for Toga, she accepts his darkest sides too despite not really agreeing with.

3- Open and Honest

Love is willing to go deep. Love is open and honest. Love wants to share their hope, dreams, and fears, and hear about yours.

Most important part about love is you feel comfort by their side. I think its safe to say thats how Toga feels around legaue, but especially around Shigaraki.

4- Only Eyes For Them

Love only has eyes for you. If the eyes wander, then you are not in love. Love isn't blind to other's beauty, but love's eyes follow their heart

This doesnt really happen with them. Toga is in very unstable condition and she is not really loyal to anyone but if she is to someone, the person she is loyal towards the most is definitely Shigaraki.

5- Their Happiness Is Important

We are willing to sacrifice for those we love and put their wants and needs before our own. Love is willing to be inconvenienced, bored, and patient for the one who means the most.

God knows how many times Toga repeatedly focus on Shigaraki's happiness, it was the first for a girl like her who only lived for herself since running away from home but she is the first person she started to care about his feelings after everything.

6- Their Presence/Or Voice Brings You Comfort

Seeing their face, or hearing their voice can turn your whole day around, and instantly improve your mood. That’s a true telltale of being in love.

Shigaraki knows how to make Toga happy. We saw several panels of how much Shigaraki makes Toga happy, compared to other characters.

Basiclaly, Toga's feelings for Shigaraki isnt crush, its true love. (I only focus on her part because her feelings for Shigaraki is one sided for now at least so we dont know.) What Toga felt about Stain, Izuku and Ochaco and others is a feelings of crush. And of course, what Toga felt about league members is also true love. But i think its a little more there with Shigaraki. More details in this and other shigatoga/toga posts. Also, recently, Ochaco became her hero so well, we will see how it will change the story.

Hello‚ KuraMonody's author here. First of all thanks for mentioning Hasani in that hyena character post, it made me really happy :3

I wanted to jump in this lion "discourse" because I'm salty haha. I only have watched a few clips of My Pride but never fully watched because I picked up some red flags even before the drama came out so I'm surprised it was promoted as "realistic" lion media. I Hope So handles the same concept way better I think.

I'm getting off track here‚ what I wanted to say is‚ when it comes to lion media I think people tend to be obsessed with the idea that it should be 100% realistic even if what they believe is actually fake. If people belive MP is accurate then they will stick to MP. There's a pattern to this‚ with TLK for example‚ there's this wild belief that Scar/ Mufasa's is 100% Nala father or that Scar should be the atractive one of the brothers even tho those movies are about singing lions and you can tell it's purely fictional‚ but for some reason people are convinced some stuff should be super accurate to real life.

Then there's the fake widely known facts. I got a bunch of comments about how male lions don't hunt even tho they DO and they were nomads so it's logical that they would hunt. People tend to have those facts as completely true‚ just like saying hyenas are pure scavengers or something. Also they once forget things can be different in xenofiction.

I think another problem that contributes to the Tau slander is that the lion is a symbol of strenght. The King of the Jungle‚ all that thing. Is such an ideolized animal that people just get pissy when someone like Tau gets introduced. It also doesn't help that sensitive‚ anxious and shy male characters are seen as weak and not desirable which is totally stupid. I have watched a lot of comments insulting male characters like that‚ also complaining about why a strong girl would like that kind of male character even tho having a good heart should be enough. So between Tau being a lion and a shy male character‚ he gets double hate.

This is all kinda sad honestly.

As for the whole realism stuff, I think people consider My Pride as "realistic" is mostly because of how brutal it can be if you ignore the advertising. Whenever fans defend the "realism", they mostly mention the infanticide and act like people can't question it's inclusion or think it doesn't make sense considering the circumstances and kind of ignore everything else. I seen this a lot with DetectiveCalico's review of the show as well as one of the shitposts of Proud killing the cubs while the lionesses shrug. Personally, I am not bothered by the fact that infantcide was included in the story in general ( and also I would be a massive fucking hypocrite if I did), but mostly on HOW it's presented in the story that bugs me more than anything.

I honestly don't care if things aren't 100% realistic ( I'm not 17 anymore) because let's face it, you HAVE to take liberties in order to tell a story. I try to get as much accurate behavior and information as I can in my comic because hyenas are some amazing creatures, but it's not gonna be 100% realistic because let's face it, a lot of shit that happens in Tofauti Sawa wouldn't happen in real life and I have kind of broken out of certain things over the years because I am not nearly as jaded as I used to be. Tofauti Sawa is actually the only story I want to do that operates like this. But I feel like if you are gonna have a completely fantasy story like My Pride that features things like actual goddesses, curses, and lion gods controlling the weather-the creator really should act like this is some grounded realistic story because it isn't but you have now bought attention to how the lions and their behavior is gonna be portrayed and people will most likely point it out when it's incorrect. I think this is pretty much why I tend to rag on The Lion Guard whenever it tries to be educational but would then get it's information incorrect. "Common Knowledge really." is so funny when Ono says something wrong. lol

(I had another whole ass example right here but decided to remove it because this post is getting too long.)

Though I must point out no matter what, people will often question things in universe or point out things related to the real life animal to how they are shown in fiction- it's pretty unavoidable but I don't think a majority of people are being malicious about it and treat it more like trivia than anything at least I hope. Like how Clownfish work in comparison to Finding Nemo for example. Some people will mention that while also being aware that there is no fucking way they are gonna put parent-child incest in this movie for the sake of "realism".

And honestly, I never really thought of Tau's species being a contributing factor to the whole thing other than the whole "role" aspect of it all. So that is another interesting way to look at it.
