Wicked UK Tour Casting

Wicked fans it’s time to rejoicify! The casting for the up-and-coming UK touring production of Wicked has (finally) been announced! And good news, we have some fresh meat!

The cast will be lead by Amy Ross as everybody’s favourite green girl, Elphaba, and Helen Wolf as Glinda the Good. They will be joining the previously announced Aaron Sidwell as Fiyero.  

The cast will also feature Steven Pinder as The Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, Kim Ismay as Madame Morrible, Emily Shaw as Nessarose, Iddon Jones as Boq and Nikki Bentley as the Standby for Elphaba.

The cast will be completed by Charli Baptie, Jason Broderick, Sam Brown, Hannah Cadec, Grace Chapman, James Davies-Williams, Howard Ellis, Amy Goodwin, Daniel James Greenaway, Jack Harrison-Cooper, Charlie Karlsen, Nicole Lupino, Stuaart Maciver, Stacey McGuire, Sara Morley, Emily Olive Boyd, Georgia Rae Briggs, Paul Saunders, James Titchener, Helen Walsh, Amy Webbb, Luke Wollaston and Benjamin Yates. 

The tour will open at the Bristol Hippodrome on the 31st of January and will run till the 3rd of March. It will then tour to Liverpool Empire between the 7th and 31st of March, Birmingham Hippodrome between 4th and 29th of April, Edinburgh Playhouse between 8th of May and 9th of June, Leeds Grand Theatre from the 13th of June till 7th of July, Dublin Bord Gais Energy Theatre from 17th of July till 1st of September, Sunderland Empire from the 6th till the 29th of September, Southampton Mayflower Theatre from 3rd till 27th October, Cardiff Wales Millennium Centre from 31st October till 24th of November and the Manchester Palace from 4th of December till 5th of January.

“Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz” made its Manila premiere in January 2014. Funnily enough, the song “Let it Go” (from Disney’s “Frozen”, and performed by Idina Menzel, original Elphaba) still dominated the airwaves during this time. Such was the popularity of this song that a hearty guffaw was heard from the audience when Glinda uttered a disparaging plea to her friend (“They’re just shoes! Let it go!”).

“Wicked” won over the hearts of Filipino audiences during its run at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. With a stunning set, meticulously-crafted costumes, and powerful performances from the Australian cast, “Wicked” is a theatrical experience best seen up close.

Three years later, “Wicked” returns to cast a spell upon Manila audiences once again. With a new venue (The Theatre at Solaire) and a new set of cast (from the UK), the second run of “Wicked” is every bit as magical as it was.

A compact, not a diluted, production

Though the stage is noticeably smaller and more compact, it still retained every bit of the magic and wonder, perhaps even more. New elements have been integrated without diminishing the impact of old elements – an impressive feat, given the smaller stage size. It’s as if you’re viewing the musical for the first time every time, and in a more intimate setting.

Everything about this production, from the clockwork-inspired set design to the intricate costumes, is a faithful reproduction of the ones on Broadway.

A superb cast

Jacqueline Hughes shines as Elphaba, the green-skinned gal who would soon become the Wicked Witch of the West. Unlike the usual roster of Elphabas, Jacqueline has a lilting and soulful voice with an equally powerful belt, which she consistently worked to her advantage. She was particularly marvelous with “No Good Deed”, where she showcased her vocal versatility with ease.

Carly Anderson, meanwhile, is sublime as Glinda the Good. Her acting and her comedic antics added more depth into the character. Steve Pinder, on the other hand, did a great job in the dual role of Dr. Dillamond and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (as the UK/International Tour being the only production to have a single actor play these two roles), while Kim Ismay was delightfully malevolent as Madam Morrible. These two established a great rapport in their scenes together, whether as co-teachers or as co-politicians.

Bradley Jaden did a refreshing take on Fiyero, mostly due to his classical voice and his shoulder-length hair (his understudy, Alex Jordan-Mills, exceeded expectations in filling in for those tight pants). The dynamics between Emily Shaw and Iddon Jones (as Nessarose and Boq, respectively) was a delight to watch.

Everyone else in the ensemble, and every player in the orchestra, played their roles with much enthusiasm and skill. All of them are at the core of what makes “Wicked” a thrilling experience every time.

The beauty of “Wicked”
