“It’s been six months, and you’re still afraid to tell her what you want?” Isagi said, astonished at the taller male’s way of going about this. 

“I’m not afraid of anything, dumbass.”

“Then why don’t you tell her already?”

For the past six months, Rin had been pursuing his feelings for you. But has he gotten anywhere yet? Nope. And was it his fault? Absolutely. 

Itoshi Rin was helpless, there was no doubt about it.

Anyone could see you felt the same way about him- hell, everyone has seen it. The way you swooned whenever he brushed his hand against yours, complimented you, or just looked at you. It was clear beyond a shadow of a doubt you shared romantic feelings for the younger Itoshi. 

Rin knew it too, deep down at least. So why has he been taking his sweet time confessing? Avoiding it at all costs? It was simple really, Rin was scared.

“What if she thinks I’m insane?” He said flatly, putting his cleats back in his bag before exiting the locker room. 

“Dude, if she thinks you’re insane for waiting so long, then that just makes her a hypocrite.” Isagi’s words were harsh yet true. You’ve both been going in circles for one another, waiting for the other to open an opportunity to declare their feelings.

Nonetheless, neither you nor Rin took the opportunities when they were presented. Leading to his current position, annoyed and confused with himself. Why was this so hard for him?

With a deep breath, Rin asked for a favor he never thought he’d ask any of his teammates. “I need advice.”

Isagi was stunned, not even he could see that one coming. He was more curious about why Rin thought he had that much experience with women, but that's besides the point. 

“I got it!” A louder, higher pitched voice came from around the corner. “Bachira?”

“Just tell her! Say you waited so long because you were testing her loyalty!” For once the boy was dressed in the locker room, but it didn’t change the fact he was giving horrible advice. “Rin, never say that. Use the word ‘test’ and she’ll shut you out.” Isagi clarified. 

“I don’t need your advice, bobcut.” 

“What about mine? I have an older sister, so I’ve heard a thing or two.” Another voice added himself to the conversation, an unreadable expression plastered on his face. 

“Because a princess knows what other princesses like…” Isagi mumbled to himself, a little confused on where Chigiri came from. Before Bachira popped in, he was sure he and Rin were the only ones in the locker room. 

“I’d take yours over bobcut’s anyday… what do you have to say.” Rin looked in Chigiri’s direction, awaiting his response.

“Just tell her you like her. I mean, it’s clear she likes you back. But if she needed time or anything like that, say you would wait as long as you had to.” Chigiri’s advice was simple and straight to the point, something Rin should have been thinking from the beginning.

“And tell her if you ever did something wrong, you’d fix it right away. Girls like that sort of reassurance… I think.” An orange haired muscle man appeared from behind Chigiri. Apparently, that was Isagi’s last straw. “Where are you all coming from?!” 

“This is the Blue Lock team’s locker room… and we just finished practice? This isn’t your personal hang out spot y’know.” Chigiri cut in, deadpanning at their prized striker. “Anyways, Kunigami also has a good point. Let her know she’ll be okay with you, even if something goes wrong.”

Rin piled all the advice up in his head, organizing it into a sentence he knew he could say. “Right…”

“So, are you gonna do it? Like right now? Today?” Bachira questioned excitedly, face brightening more than it was before.

“It’s none of your guy’s business.” Quite sick of being surrounded by what Rin could only consider ‘lukewarm idiots’, he rose from the bench he was seated on. “I’m leaving.”

“Not even a thank you, seriously?” Chigiri exclaimed as he watched the monotonous boy exit the locker room. Unbeknownst to him, Rin was actually considering thanking him. That is, if everything went smoothly. He was still trying to wrap his head around the fact he was actually doing this, afterall.

Outside of soccer, Rin isn’t exactly the smartest. Sure, he’s good at english. But you might as well factor English in with soccer since that was his only motivation behind understanding it. Though he’s not an idiot. He wasn’t blind to your feelings, the same way you weren’t blind to his.

In short, Rin knew there was no way you’d turn him down. 

The walk felt longer than any other. He had been sure to give you a heads up that he’d be over, so at least he wouldn’t have to wait any longer once he showed up at your door. Then again, that didn’t change the fact he was getting more and more nerve-wracked with each step he took. 

Too lost in his thoughts, RIn didn’t even realize it had started raining by the time he was at your door. And even when he had noticed, he forgot almost immediately once you opened the door. 

“Walking in the rain, seriously?” You deadpanned at the male, who looked unphased by his dripping hair. 

“I didn’t realize.” ‘Shut it’ is what he’d add to that statement if it was anyone else. 

“You didn’t realize it started pouring on your way here?” 

“Just let me in already…” He groaned.

You stepped aside, allowing him to get through the door. He’s lost count of the amount of times he’d been in your home, but somehow it felt different this time. Perhaps it was the rain, making the lights look warmer than before. Or maybe it was because he knew things would be different once he left this time.

“How was practice?” You asked while grabbing a towel for him to dry off with, throwing it in his direction.

He caught it effortlessly, using it to squeeze the water out of his dark strands. “Lukewarm. No one learned anything outside of scoring their own goals.” 

“Same old, I guess…” You mumbled.

It was quiet for a moment, finding peace in each other’s company. The peace alone said a million words, but neither of you said a single one. Until Rin finally spoke up.

“Listen…” He paused briefly, trying to align his words in order to not make a fool of himself. “I have something I’ve been meaning to tell you.” You both said in unison.

“I’m sorry! You go first, Rin.” Somehow, you already had a feeling you were going to say the same thing.

With a deep breath, Rin stopped cowering. “I know you know I like you… and you know I know you like me. So…”

“Do you wanna be my boyfriend? Officially?” You finished his sentence for him, tired of the agonizing wait.

Rin showed a rare smile, a real smile. It wasn’t a grin, but it showed the male’s genuine deep rooted feelings. For once, all his anger and resentment disappeared. 

“I wouldn’t mind that. As long as you wanna be my girlfriend, officially.” He mimicked your words from before, earning a giggle out of you.

“So, do you think anyone will notice a difference?” 

“Difference as in…?”

“Like how we act. Do you think anyone will notice we’re a couple now?” You elaborated.

Ah. Rin had almost forgotten half his team knew what he was doing, and probably the entire team by now. He grimaced at the teasing that was to come tomorrow, annoyed in advance. His expression didn’t go unnoticed by you, however.

“Who knows already…”

“The whole soccer team… probably.”

You both were in for quite a treat tomorrow…

EEEEEEEEEEEEE! TRAP-FLIES! Those little cuties! I love them! Little snappy jaws and big squishy babies! I want ten of them! Ah, um. Apologies for that. I just get so excited when I see or even bring up this species. I can't help it because they are so adorable! But back to some actual facts about this species. Trap-Flies are a species of insect that are closely related to flies. They are found in temperate to tropical environments, mainly wherever an abundance of small bugs can be found. A surprising difference between it and its brethren is the fact that the Trap-Fly does not fly and in fact lives a terrestrial life. Their wings have been reduced to tiny, flapping appendages that work better for signaling than flight. Their two foremost sets of limbs have shrunk down while their hind limbs have grown to carry the weight. Due to this change, Trap-Flies are bipedal and use these large limbs to run about at surprising speeds. At full speed, these guys can out run man and dryad, using their abdomens, reduced wings and head for balance as they dash about. They have this speed so that they can chase down prey and nab them before they even see them coming. While some may associate flies with scavengers and carrion, Trap-Flies are insectivores. They feed upon smaller bugs, like gnats, mosquitoes and other flies. I say smaller, because Trap-Fly adults only grow to about two feet in height, so they are not going to be tackling creatures like Isodons or Nectar Cows. No, instead they search for small swarms of flying insects, and then dash face first into the cloud. Their modified proboscis is coated with a sticky fluid that snares prey and traps them in its mouth. After filling its maw with insects, it clamps it shut and slurps down its trapped meal. Depending on the environment, Trap-Flies may hunt either during the day or night. In open flowery fields, they can be seen running around during daylight hours. When in a town that has lanterns and lamps on at night, they will hunt then, picking off the swarms that gather around the glow. They can also feed on slightly bigger insects, ones that are about fist-sized at max. They will launch their proboscis forward and use it like a sticky claw. With the prey trapped in its grip, it will tighten its hold to crush the exoskeleton and finish off the squirming meal. After that, it will simply wait for the sticky fluid to break down the morsel enough so that it can swallow the melting pieces. This gooey substance can also be used to give sticky kisses! Oh those lovable little things! It's so adorable when they nip at you with their little mouths! Anyways! Back to the facts!

This species is only a bipedal insectivore during its adult stages. When it is a larvae, it is a squishy maggot that feeds instead on worms and ground dwelling insects. After mating, female Trap-Flies will bury their eggs in the dirt with the help of their clawed feet. When they hatch, the maggots will use their fangs to dig through the soil and search for tasty worms to pierce and drain. They will spend a large chunk of their larvae life below ground, as they would be too vulnerable up above. It is down there where they also form their cocoons and grow into adults. When the time is right, the adult Trap-Fly will emerge from the ground and begin its hunt for bugs. The larvae form of the Trap-Fly also has the special ability of being one of the most adorable squishy babies to ever exist! They are so squishy and soft! It is like a living pillow that can hug you back! Humans think puppies and kittens are cute, wait til they own one of these! You make them a little dirt box at home for them to dig and play in, and you can carry them around like gooey teddy bears! They are so lovey and playful, and they are great pets for those who have saplings! Oh just the image of a sweet little sapling playing with her maggot friend is enough to make me either cry or puke out of sheer joy! SO. FREAKING. CUTE.       While some species may find them weird, Trap-Flies are wildly popular as pets for dryads (which should probably be a bit obvious now). There can be a wide variety of reasons why dryads love them so much, but the big one that I think started it all is the fact that Trap-Flies are insectivores. Due to our plant nature, there is a large amount of insects that irritate or try to feed on us. From beetles to gnats to mosquitoes (ugh, I hate those guys..), we get a good amount of grief from them and the Trap-Fly is perfect for ridding us of these pesky annoyances. Having one in the household will clear out all the pests, and some dryads who don't own these creatures may borrow one from a neighbor for a few days if they face an infestation. Outside of that, Trap-Flies have become popular due to their gorgeous colors, cute appearance and rather playful nature. I would be surprised if you went to a common dryad village and didn't see one of these creatures being walked on a leash, or a larvae being carried by a joyful sapling. They are easy to care for and can be a lot of fun to raise and play with. All they need are bugs to eat, which can be found pretty much anywhere. If there aren't any in the house or village, just get them on a leash and take them on a walk through the field. They will gorge themselves there, running about so happy and excitedly! And then they will go home and fall asleep in their little beds and it's so cute and oh goodness I want one soooo bad! I would name him Nipper and we would be the bestest of friends! Ha ha thanks. :) This fic basically turned into a vehicle for all my Naberrie headcanons, with a side of double agent Vader shenanigans, so I’m glad you enjoyed that.

Also “say it with flowers” sounds like a catchy advertising slogan and now I’m picturing Darth Vader doing TV ads, so thanks for that.

Yessss, I’m so glad people are commenting on awkward turtleduck Anakin. He’s so awkward, but he gets away with it because people are so terrified that they think he’s being intimidating, when in fact he just...doesn’t know how to end a conversation.

Padme keeps popping up in dreams and memories because the idea of writing a story without her in it at all is just too terrible to contemplate.

Palpatine is a Serious Galactic Political Force, the inane superstitions and provincial traditions of villagers and slaves do not concern him.

By the time Pooja sees her first bouquet, Anakin’s been sending them for several years already and got his delivery down to a science, but I think the first time he sent the flowers he actually thought that Palpatine would be able to read them, and he fully expected his Master to take his anger out on him, even if he didn’t suspect Vader as the sender. Anakin was just too depressed to care. But then to his surprise it turned out that Palpatine couldn’t read the secret language of his own people (which, to an Anakin who’s now thinking largely in Tatooine terms, is practically a moral judgment itself). And once he knew he could get away with it, he got really into it.

Both Pooja and Anakin think of the bouquets as Padme’s flowers, though for different reasons.

There’s an old saying that the thing that infuriates the Devil most is being laughed at. I feel like that’s true for Palpatine, as well. Of course, right now he doesn’t realize he’s being laughed at, but there’s a certain satisfaction in that, too. And it keeps people going. Laughter is important for a rebellion.

Also I am literally incapable of not name-dropping Dex at some point in my AUs, so the biggest surprise here is that he took so long to show up.

I love the parallel between Ryoo’s research and the traditional stories of Naboo, ignored because how could romantic poetry be relevant? and the insignificant folk stories that inspired Anakin’s change of alleigance.

I love the awkward conversation between Pooja and Anakin, and her complete unpreparedness for being questioned on the floral arrangements by the emperor’s right hand. (I’m not totally sure whether he’s reminding her not to give away the joke, or just checking whether she shared her aunt’s interest in flower language, or something else entirely, but regardless it’s a delightful exchange.)

I love the flower Pooja leaves behind - a last message for the emperor. It’s so in keeping with the rest of what we see of her in this, very different in tone from the gloating, personal hatred of Vader’s bouquets. That principled declaration of unflinching intent to see democracy victorious, hidden in something fragile and beautiful and insignificant, is exactly what she’s been doing here all along. And Palpatine will never know.

This entire AU is not so secretly centered around the power of stories to inspire and create resistance, so I’m glad people are enjoying that. :)

Also I imagine that to someone like Palpatine, things like flower language and folk tales and poetry are all considered childish and feminine, and therefore unimportant. So there’s a double sense of enjoyment in seeing those things lead to his downfall.

Anakin originally approached Pooja in that awkward exchange because he wanted to see if she really understood the meaning of the flowers - and if that meant he actually had an audience for them now. (Anakin’s a little bit of a showboat, tbh, and he hasn’t really been able to exercise that tendency in a long time. Sending messages to Palpatine that the Emperor can’t understand is satisfying, in its way, but it’s much more satisfying to known someone else does understand.)

Only once he’s confirmed that yes, she definitely can read the message, he has no idea how to end the conversation. So he just kind of...leaves. Like the awkward duck he is.

I’m glad you like Pooja’s flower at the end. :) And the important difference, ultimately, between her (and Leia) and Anakin. Anakin’s doing this in some sense for Padme - she loved the Republic so he’ll fight to bring it back - but ultimately, he still doesn’t really believe in the ideal of the Republic, and democracy is still a pretty meaningless concept to him. He’s out for a personal revenge, and he is actually invested in the Tatooine revolution, but the Rebellion as an organization is a lot more abstract to him.

Pooja, though, is really Padme’s ideological heir, even if she’s crafted her public image to be Padme’s opposite. She is fighting for democracy, for a core set of principles, for the ideal of the Republic she genuinely hopes to create.

Well, for starters, this is an AU so if anybody minds that it conflicts with Rogue One, that’s just… silly. (And I adored the movie and I ain’t bothered. ;) )

AND POOJA IS SO AMAZING. I just… I love the potential of Padme’s nieces as characters. I bet they were amazing. <3 And I love the way you flesh out the Naberries. *gives them all some much-needed hugs*

I love Leia and Pooja being friends (oh my gosh, they’re cousins and they don’t even know it and cousins who are good friends is a thing I love). And Leia being so gleeful about her bestie’s symbolic shenanigans is wonderful. (I just… it’s odd, maybe, but I just feel like Leia and Anakin are sort of besties—they have a lot that they share with each other that they can’t share with anyone else. They’re unknowingly biological father and daughter, basically adoptive father and daughter… and they’re besties. And that makes me so happy. :) )

“One day we’ll tell all the stories again. And we’ll have flowers.” —I LOVE THIS LINE.

I have to admit, I wouldn’t have thought that there could be a purge of Senators when the Senate is abolished, but it makes sense. And honestly, that part was truly scary in a way that I haven’t felt from any fics in a long time. Maybe because it was a little more real? Pooja’s amazing, but she’s not Force-sensitive and she doesn’t exactly have the Skywalker luck to get out of Situations. (Heck, maybe it even connected with some old recurring nightmares of mine subconsciously, now that I think about it.) That was genuinely scary. *shivers*

So thank goodness Anakin could give Pooja that message, and thank goodness Pooja and her handmaidens and her family got safely away! Here’s hoping she and Anakin saved a lot of lives!

Anakin’s always had an awkward streak, but combined with the additional awkwardness of interacting with someone he hasn’t seen in years, who happens to think he’s dead and to be terrified of the person she thinks he is...and then on top of that the realization that, having determined she can indeed read the flower message, he has no idea where to take the conversation next.... Welp. Better to just nope on out of there.

(Also Darth Vader is frequently awkward in the movies and I feel like fandom doesn’t talk about that enough, so I’m on a quest to write awkward!Vader as often as possible.)

Thanks! I suspect Pooja is right on the money, too, though of course she doesn’t know that Palpatine also has the joy of tormenting Anakin with his endless parties on the anniversary of Padme’s death. But I think he’d have done the same thing even without Anakin, because he really did hate Padme on her own account.

Pooja and Leia already having a pretty close friendship is going to make at least one part of The Reveal easier. And yeah, I think Leia and Anakin do see each other primarily as friends, with a father-daughter dynamic because it’s a friendship with that level of age gap. It’s not unlike the relationship between Shmi and Anakin, actually: a parent-child relationship that’s really a partnership, a relationship between equals. Leia calls Anakin her teacher, and he does consider her his student (though he’s never actually used that language), but the relationship doesn’t look anything like any teacher-student relationship in his experience. He’s not her master, and neither of them have ever called her his apprentice. He doesn’t give her orders. He doesn’t tell her not to ask questions. They’re friends.

My headcanon for this ‘verse is that the entire Senatorial contingent of the Rebellion got out before Palpatine dissolved the Senate, so this operation, at least, was a resounding success. :) And while Palps must think that someone tipped them off, it certainly couldn’t have been Vader, who was light years away chasing down Princess Leia above Tatooine, and who has always hated politicians anyway.

Hi, I love your stanmily au. Stan has an army of adorable kids; he totally uses that to his advantage. He may have them take part in the Mystery Shack. How much does he & the kids get away with? How are the kids like on outings and travelling? Everyone has different tastes in music, some talk the entire drive, and everyone has their own thing they like to do alone & stuff they like to do with others. Actually what would Stan do having to drive around several kids before Soos drives?

Stan definitely uses the kids in the Shack.  Crowds love cute babies.  Stan started out by having Dipper and Mabel in baby carriers, one on back and one on front.  His back hated him for it.  After he adopted Wendy, he set up an attraction called “Worlds Cutest Kids!”, which was just the kids barricaded in a corner of the museum by baby gates duck taped together, playing with their toys.  After Wendy had...adjusted to life at the Shack (it’s a long story) she helps with an attraction called “The Anonymous Box of Mystery”, and when the younger kids get older they all help out, making attractions, manning the gift shop, all that stuff.

The Pines family get away with a lot.  With all of their combined abilities, they can worm their way out of anything.  Heck, having the kids help plan the toxic waste heist (not that they knew what Stan was stealing) kept the government agents from catching and arresting Stan the day the Portal opened.

The denizens of Gravity Falls have learned to fear the sight of Stan’s aptly named El Diablo.  They have three rules when going out into town: 1) Stay within shouting distance, 2) Don’t get caught doing anything illegal, and 3) If someone sounds the alarm, everyone books it to the car.  The kids will split up into different configurations depending on what everyone is doing, and each configuration is its own kind of chaos for everyone around them.

Traveling is a different story.  Soos doesn’t get his truck for awhile, so everyone rides in the El Diablo.  Soos and Wendy both sit in the shotgun seat, and the younger kids all share the backseat since they’re all small enough to fit.  Stan, despite trying to be gruff and detached, and despite his needing to work on the Portal, is the biggest doting Dad ever to his family.  He loves to take the kids on weekend camping trips and summer road trips in an RV that Stan purchases (sort of) for family use since there is no way that he was gonna haul those kids around in the Stanlymobile on any drive longer than 20 minutes.

The music thing is actually an easy fix.  They have a CD. Any time someone finds a song they like, they put it on the CD, and they make sure that its shuffled into a section with different music.  So they could be listening to Bohemia Rhapsody, and then the theme song for Dreamboy High would play next, and then some classical piece from Tchaikovsky will play, and then some Journey will play, and so on and so forth.  This CD, if played from start to end, will last a full three days, and keeps growing. 

Mabel is definitely the talker.  The first road trip they went on, when the little kids were about five, Mabel chattered for a full seven hours, then promptly passed out.  Nearly gave Stan a heart attack.  Grenda will sing along to whatever is playing on the radio, even when it’s a song she doesn’t know.  Candy will tune out everything and read, usually something informative about where they’re going, and sometimes a fictional novel.  Dipper and Paz are video game buddies, playing their Gameboys together for hours with Wendy occasionally joining in.  Or they’ll watch some of their Ghost Harassers DVDs, or they’ll read the Journals together after they find them.  Wendy will usually put her headphones on and just crash in the shotgun seat and chill, but sometimes she’ll just talk to Stan.  She’s still got emotional baggage left over from losing her parents at the age of five, and Stan has his own emotional issues, so he gets it, lets her talk.  Soos sleeps.

And as for the kids all doing stuff together in groups, there are certain things that they split up to do.  Dipper and Candy are the only ones who love D,D,& D, but they will occasionally be able to rope one or two of their siblings into playing.  When they can’t decide on a movie everyone will like, Mabel, Candy, and Grenda will watch Dreamboy High on one TV while Dipper and Paz and Wendy will watch so cheesy horror B-flick on the second TV that Stan acquired for them.  Dipper and Paz are Journal buddies.  Soos and Dipper will do guy stuff and the girls will do girl stuff.  Everyone has little things they like to do with Stan, and everyone knows how to box, but Grenda and Wendy are the only ones who do it competitively.  Oh, and the kids call themselves the Mystery Crew, and have been going on Monster Hunts (or Cookie Jar Raids) since Paz could talk Soos into dropping the baby gate.
