Strange Academy #2 Review

It’s still one of the only things that saved 2020.

After a great start, we now witness the first day of school. Shaylee is pure and I love her, but I wouldn’t enjoy being her roommate. SHE DOESN’T SLEEP! Doyle and Iric are still acting like rivals, which is funny and always a nice trope. Lastly, the most precious being in Strange Academy, aka Dessy, is still tormeting poor Zoe. She’ll have to reveal her secret real soon if she wants a moment of peace.

Mindful One is a precious beam, as well as Toth. Loved him since the very first panel. But I’m quite suspicious because I love them all.

Oh. Just save this panel for later. JUST WAIT FOR IT...

The first class is History of Mystical Objects, by professor TAO. I’m very excited because, well, he taught Stephen. Do these kids know how blessed they are????? To learn with the wise Ancient One?? Hello??? (Please ignore my magic nerdness). Also I loved his method. It reminds me of Stephen’s first days as an apprentice, cleaning and learning how to be patient.

Here we have a few of interesting things to consider. I love how Jericho explains that zombies in voodoo culture are not related to what we see in pop culture. Personally, I’ve been reading about Haitian voodoo and it’s really INCREDIBLE. I’m loving to learn more about this religion and it’s definitely miles away from what media usually portray.

Next, Wanda is teaching chaos magic, as we all suspected she would. I’m glad she’s having a good time at the academy. She did not deserve what Marvel has done to her since House of M.

Lastly... WHO’S COUCH TAYLOR? IS HE A WIZARD? IS HE AN ORDINARY GUY? IS HE A JOKE I’M NOT GETTING?

And finally, the 5th period. My favorite. Remember when I said Illyana and Daimon would teach demonology and even made a house for them? SKOTTIE GETS IT! And the best part? Illyana is incredible here. I’ve made a post with this moment already, so I’m just leaving a single panel. But seriously, she’s so in character. She’s that kind of teacher who wants to look nice and cool, but kids are tough. So she’s finally allowed to show her true colors. In that case, the colors of Limbo. Yes, she has the guts to leave two children in Limbo just because they know no respect. I mean, she has experience as a teacher back in Xavier/Jean Grey’s school, and she’s not a loved one like Ororo or Jean haha. Also loved how she answered Jericho when he tried to reprimand her. Plus, is Daimon trying to control his anger issues? Because, boy, for a demon, he’s smooth like an angel. Anyway, don’t be late to 5th period.

I’m glad to finally see Germán’s powers in action. I felt like he didn’t have the chance to be properly introduced in issue #1. He summons some kind of green dragon made out of energy? Is he Shiryuu? In any case, that’s REALLY COOL! Some characters have these unique powers and I’m dying to see them in action, like Calvin and Zoe. We’ll have to wait and see.

And heeeeeeeeeere’s the most important part of this issue in my opinion. Emily’s curious, even worried. She knows magic has some cost, but Zelma reassures her. It’s OBVIOUSLY A LIE. We’ve been there. We’ve read v4 and v5, Zelma. You’re not fooling anyone here. Also the credit you earned when you had an argument with Stephen? GONE! YOU’RE ACTING JUST LIKE HIM!! Why are you magic users all like this, ugh? Mark my words: this will definitely backfire.

After that, we see Iric and Doyle fighting for their lives in Limbo. These kids are really spoiled. Illyana ended up in Limbo at the age of six and remained there for years until she defeated its previous ruler, Belasco. What’s a day in Limbo compared to this? Pfff.

Then, I see bullies and I don’t like it. And here’s a bit of criticism. We’ve been known American schools are usually portrayed like a really tough place where there are themed groups and such. But first. Schools around the world are NOT like this model. I was expecting to see that in Strange Academy, since it’s not an ordinary American school. We have people around the world AND from several different dimensions. It shouldn’t be like that. Besides, it’s the freaking first day of the first year? Nobody knows anybody. How is it possible to have a group of bullies already? Not to mention that this is a MAGIC SCHOOL. Its teachers are the most powerful sorcerers on Earth? How didn’t anyone punish those bullies? Please, leave Calvin alone????? That’s not nice. I know, maybe Skottie is targeting young people so they can relate to these school situations. But I really don’t like it. That’s a big no no.

Oh, have I said that Toth is a precious beam today?

Have I also mentioned that this will backfire? Because it will. Can’t help but wonder if they’re doing something like Wong’s cult to redirect Stephen’s magic cost to the monks. Or something worse. Probably worse. Jericho, I love you but you’re wrong.

The last panel shows how Iric and Doyle returned from Limbo. Probably because Illyana forgot they were in there and brought them back through a step disc. If they escaped on their own, then I’m really impressed. It’s really hard to escape that place. The Magik miniseries will let you know why.

But this is not the last thing I’m reviewing! There’s this panel here that shows some classes and their descriptions, and many teachers that we haven’t seen yet.

I’m still amazed at Inferno 101 haha. Also Man-Thing is so precious. He’s the soft version of DC’s Swamp Thing and I’m here for it. And then AGAIN COUCH TAYLOR? WHO IS THIS GUY???

Ok, but here things start getting really exciting. Who’s teaching Math? RINTRAH!!!!! IT’S BEEN 84 YEARS SINCE WE LAST HEARD OF RINTRAH! AND HE’S HERE! I’M SO GLAD!!

This Sister Sara is a Ghost Rider character. I don’t recall if I’ve ever seen her, but she sounds really cool. Señor Mágico appeared in Last Days of Magic and he’s really cool. I’m glad he’s back! I have no idea who Emeritus Harkness is, though.

Nico, as seen last issue, is also teaching! I like the description of her class, since she can’t cast the same spell twice haha.

And of course Zelma is replacing Stephen. He barely makes it in time at the hospital, no wonder he wouldn’t show up for his own class. But I love him so I’m closing my eyes to his negligence.

Now, another GREAT SURPRISE!! Guess who’s teaching Sanctum Economics? WONG!!! WONG’S A TEACHER!!! I’M SO HAPPY FOR HIM!! I’m not sure he’s still Hotel Inferno’s CEO, you know, since Ghost Rider DESTROYED him and kidnapped Mephisto, but he deserves a real independent job. Also recognition. It’s pretty important.

Looking forward to Shaman’s classes. And lastly... Dead Girl is back!! It makes perfect sense she will be teaching Necromance Languages.

I loved how Skottie dug deep down to bring this magic universe. It’s really working. I’m still very excited and I’m dying to learn more about these children and how they grow and teach their teachers that they’re wrong about lying to them.

I have no idea when next issue is coming and I’m very concerned about how the United States are (not) handling this pandemic. So things are pretty dusky and uncertain. For now, comics are slowly getting to the usual schedule. But it’s always possible that another lockdown happens and more delays will come along.

Not if Emma has anything to do with it. She’s exasperated. She’s just a witch doing her best to maintain peace between different factions in the magical world after one of its de facto leaders bites the dust. Or gets bitten and turns to dust, whatever.

Killian Jones may have killed Rumpelstiltskin, but that also means he has to take a place on the council.

Naturally, they have to do a fair amount of collaborating, and it’s absolute bollocks. They hate each other. Even if Killian does privately think Emma has the most lovely golden locks, and Emma will never admit to how easy it is to get lost in those blue eyes (or red, if he goes all fangy). Ch1

It is also believed that lunar and solar eclipses are related to the lovemaking times of the celestial couple. This myth is clearly about the power of the moon, the sun, the sky and love and desire.

Sometimes there is a suicidal note saying that it was too much, that they couldn’t go on like that, sometimes there is none. But they all have one thing in common: they were alone, they had nothing left to live for.

But there is one person who tries to help people: the Saviour.

However, there's certainly something strange happening on Viola Island... Something that's happened more than once before. And while seeing Emma in period costume isn't exactly weird, she definitely shouldn't be dreaming about the "good" doctor rocking a ponytail and tricorn.
