Note
I'm from the USA and took a lot of Indian history courses at my university. You might already know this or have guessed it, but a lot of what we learned was taught from a leftist--and at times explicitly Marxist--perspective. This was even stronger in other (but thankfully not all!) social studies departments where there were classes focusing solely on various social ills of Hinduism with regard to caste and issues of feminism, yet almost nothing negative could be said if it might be critical of Islam or Muslim figures, (Mahmud of Ghazni being a notable exception for one of my professors.) There was a whole class on British colonialism; no details were spared. Horrible famines in the Deccan, Odisha, Bengal. The decimation of the textile industry. Banning bharatanatyam. The salt tax. Accounts of how a British man kicked one of his servants to death, and another of how the poor and sick congregated outside the gates of a hospital in the south that at the time would only help Europeans. Jallianwala Bagh. But Aurangzeb? Completely whitewashed. You would think Sikhs carry a kirpan for no reason. It was only through reading additional books and documents for my essays and projects that I learned about how he tore down temples, smashed murtis (and stole valuable ones,) levied a double tax on non-Muslims, etc. I remember reading an account of a traveler going through the south at the time of the Deccan wars, remarking on how you could find entire villages empty and deserted fields full of unharvested crops because the people had fled advancing armies. In one region his forces simply killed some Telugu-speaking Brahmins serving the local king rather than force them to convert, and in another his forces captured a royal scribe, forced him to convert to Islam, and forcibly circumcized him before the man killed himself. Obviously the history of all things under the umbrella of Hinduism or any other system is not perfect, but there was a huge difference in how critical you could be of Hinduism (and even western traditions/ideas) compared to Islam.
Sometimes I daydream about what it would have been like to study Sangam literature in India or to experience Andal without needing an English translation, or going to translate old Sanskrit copies of the Mahabharata whose telling is unique to a certain village or something. But ultimately I'm glad I chose to be a research scientist instead and have a career in that, because I don't think I would have been able to succeed in academia unless I were a leftist. :\ Honestly I feel like even going to hang out with ISKCON for a few days would be a better introduction to Hinduism for the average person abroad with zero knowledge than a class called "Intersections of Gender and Caste in Hinduism" or something.
Very telling how Hinduism, and even Christianity is ripped apart in academia, yet when it comes to Islam, it is a religion of "tolerance, and beauty that respects women."
Honestly, though, it's because of how severely they react when their religion is criticized or even inspected. Apostates are given death, women who do not obey are given death, anyone who utters a word against their precious prophets is given, you guessed it! Death.
No religion is perfect, humans can be horrific creatures, and even Hinduism cannot escape that. But Islam has committed far more war crimes than any other religion.
It absolutely boils my blood to see traces of colonizers in our cities. One side of my family hails from Aurangabad, named aftre Aurangzeb, and you already know the atrocities he committed.
It's so fucking insidious to see how the youth have been told what to think. My own friend claimed to me, verbatim: "You cannot be neutral in the Israel-Palestine war. Either you support Palestine, or you support genocide."
Support Hamas? Support terrorism? The same terrorism that affects us? Has everyone forgotten 26/11?
It makes me so sad to think of the future we could have had. Sanskrit would be the most spoken language, instead of English. Gurukuls would exist, and India would still have all of its wealth.
You're right, even ISKCON is better than the propaganda they feed people about our religion.

(via SB 1.5.3-4 - HG Arcita Das (ACBSP) - 11/09/2024 - YouTube)
**SB 1.5.3-4 Discussion with HG Arcita Das (ACBSP)** *Reflections on Devotion, Texts, and the Legacy of Srila Prabhupada* In this talk, His Grace Arcita Das (ACBSP) offers insights into a variety of devotional topics, from the significance of Srila Prabhupada’s books and the evolution of ISKCON’s publishing endeavors to the role of editing and devotion in sharing Krishna Consciousness. This discussion begins by welcoming esteemed guests at the Houston Temple, recognizing the decades of service many have devoted to Srila Prabhupada's mission, especially those engaged in the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) and other vital projects. Arcita Das also offers a personal reflection on the importance of hearing and chanting Krishna's holy name, emphasizing the transformational power these practices have for spiritual seekers. Throughout the discourse, the focus remains on how Srila Prabhupada’s works serve as timeless guides for devotees at all stages of spiritual life. Prabhupada’s lectures, he notes, were designed to engrain scriptural verses in the listener’s mind, a principle evident in the daily classes conducted in ISKCON temples. He points out that Prabhupada emphasized repetition as a core teaching method, especially with verses from texts like the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Arcita Das explains that memorization and understanding of these texts should ideally translate into practical application, shaping the lives of devotees. The class itself serves as a reminder of how engagement with sacred texts can both challenge and uplift. Arcita Das also reflects on his personal journey with Krishna Consciousness and the initial encounters with Srila Prabhupada’s books. He recounts how, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, “Back to Godhead” magazine was a major outreach effort. The magazine reached millions of readers monthly and helped spread Krishna Consciousness globally. In the early days, BBT's efforts were extraordinary, and the magazine became a standard publication across ISKCON’s branches. Recalling his own service with BBT and ISKCON Press, he shares a historical perspective on how these publications—and the editorial work behind them—were always driven by Prabhupada’s desire to preserve authenticity and accessibility in his translations and commentaries. Arcita Das addresses the often-debated topic of editing Prabhupada’s works. He provides context by recalling how Srila Prabhupada personally initiated the editorial process to ensure clarity and correct English usage, thereby allowing the teachings to resonate with a broader audience. Arcita explains that Prabhupada took a very hands-on approach to the early edits, often reviewing and approving changes to make his work more understandable to Western readers without compromising the core teachings. He acknowledges that this remains a “touchy subject” for some devotees but emphasizes that Prabhupada’s intention was clear: to make Krishna Conscious philosophy accessible to all. Arcita Das also touches on the broader relevance of BBT and ISKCON publications as spiritual lifelines. Citing examples from his experiences teaching and speaking at universities, he argues that Srila Prabhupada’s works offer unique perspectives that can stand alongside, and often challenge, secular scholarship. He suggests that despite differing interpretations, Prabhupada’s books maintain their relevance because they embody both the teachings and the devotional spirit of their author, a fact he emphasizes to university students and scholars alike. Regarding the spiritual practice of scriptural study, Arcita advises new devotees to engage with the full body of Srila Prabhupada’s works, suggesting they read and understand the entire Bhagavad-gita, then the Srimad-Bhagavatam. This foundational knowledge, he suggests, will provide clarity on both the philosophical principles and the devotional mood essential for spiritual growth. He also encourages devotees to chant the holy names and engage with the texts daily, viewing this as integral to embodying the teachings. Arcita Das concludes with a reflection on the importance of faith and humility in Krishna Consciousness. For those new to the path, he advises seeking guidance and committing to Prabhupada’s teachings as an anchor in one’s spiritual journey. With the guidance of qualified mentors and regular engagement with Srila Prabhupada’s books, he believes that all devotees can access the wisdom and inspiration needed to deepen their connection with Krishna. His Grace Arcita Das’s talk underscores the transformative power of Srila Prabhupada’s mission, the importance of upholding his literary legacy, and the need for every devotee to approach the texts with dedication, sincerity, and openness.

Located in Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati and its hilltop temple town, Tirumala, offer a serene blend of spirituality, devotion, and scenic beauty. This guide will walk you through everything that makes a Tirupati trip special.
Significance of the Tirupati Trip
The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, one of the richest and most visited temples in the world, lies atop the seven hills of Tirumala. Pilgrims from across India and beyond come here to experience the divine Darshan of Lord Balaji. Many people undertake the journey to fulfill vows or offer prayers, believing that Balaji fulfills their wishes.
Key Highlights of a Tirupati Trip
Tirumala Temple Darshan: The temple, located atop the Tirumala Hills, is the focal point of the trip. Devotees can either pre-book special Darshan tickets or opt for the free Sarvadarshan queues.
Trekking Routes – Alipiri Mettu and Srivari Mettu: Many pilgrims prefer to walk to Tirumala as an act of devotion.
Alipiri Mettu: A 7 km route with 3,550 steps.
Srivari Mettu: A shorter, 2.1 km route with 2,400 steps. Trekkers are rewarded with free Darshan tokens at the top.
Tirupati Laddu Prasadam: Don’t miss the famous Tirupati Laddu, distributed as Prasadam to devotees after Darshan.
Other Important Temples:
Padmavathi Temple, Tiruchanoor: Dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi, the consort of Lord Balaji.
